Writing a Winning
Be sure to include some accomplishments for each position you’ve
held. For example, if you were a salesperson you might include
information like “increased sales by 25 percent my first year by
attending industry trade shows,” or if you are an accountant, maybe
you “saved the company 20 percent by comparing long distance
options.” Make sure any claims you make are true and that you can
provide proof if asked.

The Importance of SpaceBy Lisa K. McDonald, Career Polish, Inc.
You would think a person that has four dogs – three of whom seem to think they are lap dogs – would not havespace issues; but you would think wrong. I'm funny about my space; the thing is I like my own space.
When my son moved out I ripped up the carpeting myself and repainted the entire room a bright, bright, springgreen with white and purple accents. Does this tell you anything? I've always identified with the KT Oslin song "LiveClose By, Visit Often". I like my space.
But space is also important within your space. Having a decluttered environment helps calm your mind and allowsyou to appreciate the items you have selected to remain within your space. In decorating having appropriate spaceactually accentuates the pieces you want to show off.
In networking personal space is sometimes neglected and can stop a connection before it even gets the opportunityto begin. I have come to accept that circumstances do not always allow for the appropriate allotment of personalspace. However, it can be a tricky thing entering into someone's personal space - it can come across as rude orintrusive; it can be uncomfortable for the other party or worse your intentions could be misread. Respecting personalspace is important.
Space is a good thing.
Too often I see a total disregard forspace on resumes. It seems to go inextremes—either there is no whitespace or there is too much. Thequestion then becomes what is theright amount of white space in aresume.
Let's start with margins. The generalrule is acceptable margin settingsare between.5 inch and 1 inchequally around the page - it givesbalance. Sometimes you can fudgea little and have.5 inch top andbottom and.75 on the sides. Justmake sure there is a nice balance.
Within the resume is where it canget complicated. First – the fontshould normally be 11 or 12 pointfont, which is easiest for the reader.Using a 10 point font makes thewords too small and the readermight have to strain to read whatyou have presented. Any larger andit will look like you are trying to takeup space with a larger font becauseyou do not have any valuablecontent to fill the page.
Letterhead and headings shouldutilize a larger font - this cannormally be 13 or 15 font;something that will make it stand outa bit more. Of course using bold, borders, italics etc will also help setthese items apart. They should be setapart which means there should beat least a blank line before and aftera heading.
I normally do not recommend aspace in between bullet pointsbecause it spaces it out a bit toomuch; remember your bullet pointsshould not take three lines to beginwith so the additional space isunnecessary.
There should be space betweeneach position to create a visualbreak for the reader. Sometimespeople get so wrapped up in "it has
to be one page" that they crameverything on one page. Thisactually does more harm than good. The type is too small, the marginsare too wide and there is not enoughwhite space for the eyes to relax andtake a break while reading.
By the way – one page or twoseems to be a big debate. When Iask hiring managers, recruiters andHR professionals about theirpreference the overwhelmingresponse is basically they don't care- as long as the information they arelooking for is there, easy to find andread. People do have personalpreferences but I can guarantee youthat even if they prefer a one pageresume if your squeeze a two pageresume down to one page they arenot going to be very pleased to readit.
One way to see if you do not haveenough white space is when lookingat your resume on your computerminimize the size of the document toabout 45 percent so you can see theentire document at one time. Do nottry to read what you wrote just get afeel for the visual. Listen to your gutand it will let you know if morespace is needed.
If you have the problem of too muchspace then perhaps it is a contentissue. Go back to each position andstart listing out every single thing thatyou did for that position; this willhelp the ideas start to flow. Onceyou have done this then you can goback and begin to identify skills thatyou utilized when performing yourduties.
For example if you utilized problem-solving, conflict resolution, analytical, communication, organization or any other number ofskills this is the time to write thosedown along with the duty.
Then you can go back and add to
your descriptions including not onlythe duty, but the skills used and thevalue that was added by youperforming the task.
When writing your resume respectyourself enough to give appropriateattention to the important items bysurrounding them with white spacewhich will naturally bring thereaders attention to those items. Also, respect the reader in utilizingenough white space in order that itbecomes a document they want toread rather than must read.
We are all naturally drawn to thingsthat attract us. When I was a kid mymom used to take us to the libraryevery week. I remember openingbooks and flipping through anddeciding if I was going to take ithome or not based solely on the"feel". If the pages were edge toedge words packed in then that onegot returned to the shelf. If the wordswere not as cramped, there wasbreaks or pictures or anything morevisually attractive then that was thebook I chose.
We really have not changed in ourfirst instincts as to what we want toread. If I am given a resume that hasvery little white space Iunconsciously have a negativereaction - it looks like a pain to readso therefore I am already starting offwithout reading one word with anegative attitude.
When in doubt, print off yourresume and ask a friend to look at it- do not give it to them to read, justhold it and ask them how it looks. Then watch their reactions - don't justlisten to them say, "Fine". You cangauge the appropriateness of yourwhite space based on their initialreaction.
The content is the most importantelement of your resume - it should beyour main focus. The look and feel
can be modified after you havecreated a solid sales statement foryourself. Once you have done thatthen the fun begins - play a little withfonts, margins, headings - after allthis is your personal sales statementso you should like the way it looks!

More and more people are talkingabout the importance of personalbranding, both in career searchingand in career development.Effective personal branding not onlymakes you stand out from the crowdto employers and recruiters, it canalso increase your job security bycommunicating your value as aleader and team player to yourorganization.
What is personal branding?
Personal branding is the process ofidentifying the unique anddifferentiating value that you bringto an organization, team and/orproject and communicating it in aprofessionally memorable andconsistent manner in all of youractions, both online and offline, toall current and prospectivestakeholders in your career.
The Lighthouse PersonalBranding Model
The lighthouse is a great model forbreaking down the brandingprocess into four key steps: thefoundation, the beacon, the towerand the beam.
Foundation:
Your foundation is your unarguablestrengths and experience in yourchosen area. To identify your ownfoundation, write down thestrengths that differentiate you fromthe rest and ask your friends, familyand colleagues/managers to do thesame for you. Identify the top threeto five overlapping strengths thatsupport the career direction youwant to pursue.
Beacon:
Your beacon is the memorable andconsistent communication of yourstrengths and experience. Now thatyou have identified your foundation,it's time to create your beacon byfinding a word or phrase thatrepresents these strengths and canbecome your brand. Develop ashort pitch that can follow yourbrand, describing your strengths inmore detail. Ensure that your wordor phrase is versatile and canchange with your direction.
Tower:Simply put, your tower is yourvisibility, reach and presentation,
both online and offline, whichsupport the beacon. This is reallyeverything you do to proactivelybuild your personal brand. Thehigher you build your tower withyour efforts, the more visible youwill be to potential careerstakeholders. Here are some waysto proactively build your brand andcredibility in front of your targetaudience:
Create a LinkedIn profile and followthe suggested steps to completeyour profile 100 percent, makingsure you include your personalbrand and pitch in your subtitle andsummary sections.
Create a Google account andprofile for improved search engineoptimization.
Include your personal brand onyour resume, cover letter, businesscards, email signature, voicemailmessage and across your othersocial networks, such as Twitter andFacebook.
Consider creating a personalwebsite/blog site where you canhouse all of your information, including experience, education,
skills, honors, entrepreneurial effortsand more.
Start your own blog with a uniquepoint of view on your industry/areaof interest.
Contribute value in your book orproduct reviews, your tweets, yourcomments on other blog posts, yourown blog articles or articles for printpublications, your discussions inLinkedIn Groups and your advicevia LinkedIn Answers or otherforums.
Start a company full-time or on theside with relevant and valuableproducts/services/resources for theindustry.
Publish and offer print and/orelectronic publications.
Get quoted in the media by joiningHARO (Help a Reporter Out) andcontributing advice, experiencesand insights to writers andjournalists seeking expert sources.

Personal Application
I used this model to help developmy own personal brand during my
MBA career search. Havingidentified my foundation to be myendless energy, out-of-the-boxcreativity, relationship building andproblem solving, I looked for aword that could pull all of thosestrengths together into onememorable brand message. Thebeacon I chose was "generator" asI generate energy, creativity, relationships and solutions toproblems. I was pursuing a careerin marketing and brandmanagement, and therefore, Ibecame a brand and marketinggenerator. I proactively built mytower by incorporating my branddirectly into my online profiles, myresumes and my entrepreneurialefforts. I then took a more activeapproach, targeting the "beam" byincorporating my personal brand inmy interview responses, networkingintroductions and informationalinterview outreach. It was thisprocess that helped me successfullysecure my current employment, andthis model continues to help guideall of my professional andentrepreneurial ventures.
As you create, build and improveon your personal brand, keep thelighthouse in mind as a visual modeland guide to personal brandingsuccess.

Governor Meets with Jobs Panel on Workforce Training EffortsGovernor Paul LePage met with theState Workforce Investment Board Apr.6 to discuss workforce training effortsaimed at providing workers with betteropportunities for job skill training andhelping businesses access a betterqualified workforce.
“Two of my greatest priorities asGovernor relate directly to workforce,”Governor LePage said. “We need toensure students have the skills they needto be productive workers when theygraduate, and we must get targetedtraining to people in the workforcetoday so that they can be competitiveand successful in the job market.”
The Governor noted that in his travelsthroughout the state he has encounteredmany employers who have indicatedthat they have positions to fill but werenot able to find qualified applicants forthe jobs.
The State Workforce Investment Boardis comprised of Maine business leaders, state and local officials, along withrepresentatives from education, organized labor and service providers. The panel is charged with creating andimplementing policies that quickly trainthe most people for meaningful careersgiving industries the skilled workforceneeded to support Maine’s economic
recovery.
“We must make this system moreeffective in training people with skillsemployers need.” Governor LePagesaid to members of the State WorkforceInvestment Board. “There is somethingwrong when employers with good jobscan’t find workers. It is holding oureconomy back.”
Earlier this year, the Governorproposed changes to the workforcesystem to allow a greater share ofFederal workforce funds to go to directjob skill training. The plan involves stateChamber of Commerce organizationsthroughout the state in gathering
feedback from businesses in order toidentify skill gaps in the workforce, prioritize training initiatives anddevelop defined career ladders whereworkers can build on prior skills andnew learning to advance in their jobs.
Frederick L. Webber, chair of the StateWorkforce Investment Board applaudedthe Governor’s work on the issue.“Governor LePage has a clear vision forhow this system must be positioned toensure opportunity for all workers andbusinesses in our economy movingforward,” Webber said. “We arecommitted to carrying out his plan.”
