Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically toline up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the sameemployer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimesconfusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet companyrepresentatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one.
ResumesBefore the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are goingto be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’reinterested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not asinterested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Besure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread thembefore you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness onyour part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t beafraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you arethere for!
Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of yourresume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about yourabilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very muchlike your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support yourqualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representativeknow why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

Writing a Winning
Be sure to include some accomplishments for each position you’ve
held. For example, if you were a salesperson you might include
information like “increased sales by 25 percent my first year by
attending industry trade shows,” or if you are an accountant, maybe
you “saved the company 20 percent by comparing long distance
options.” Make sure any claims you make are true and that you can
provide proof if asked.

The Most Talked About Recruitment Opportunity of the Year!
Have a style in mind before you
begin. A quick check on resume-
writing on the internet should
give you several options to
choose from. Your software also
may offer some options from
which to choose and may even
offer a template to work
through. If you don’t have com-
puter access, however, you
might visit your local library and
see if they offer computers for
use. Most libraries today do and
the use of a computer will not
only be helpful in providing you
with tips in putting your resume
together but, will also offer you
an easier and more professional
means of printing it.

√ Create an ample supply of resumes. Make sure you proof them first—they must be error free.Carry your resumes in a folder to protect them from wrinkles, stains, etc.
√ Be prepared to talk about your experiences, skills, and qualifications.
Practice is the best preparation for your personal “sales pitch”.
√ Research the companies in attendanceIt’s important that you can converse with them knowledgably.
√ Develop a list of questions for the employers that interest you.
√ Take your calendar or date book. Some employers may want to schedule interviews soon afterthe job fair.
Dress Like you Want Their “Best” Job√ Select conservative, tailored clothing that is clean and
wrinkle free.
√ Excessive jewelry and perfumes or colognes, can hurt you—treata job fair like an interview.
Before the Fair
√ Keep in mind that employers may meet hundreds of people at the fair.In order to make your 1st impression “stick”, you must follow upon your job leads.
√ Use the business cards you collected to write a follow-up letter.1. Remind them that you met them at the (NAME) Job Fair and
thank them for the information that they shared with you.
2. Restate your qualifications and interest in the position. Include acopy of your resume.
√ Follow up phone calls are often effective. However, be cautious not to harass an employer by calling severaltimes in a short time period.
After the Fair
√ Leave your friends, family members and pets at home.Bringing your loved ones (unless they are looking for a job, too) issimply unprofessional.
√ The first one to two hours of a fair tend to be the busiest.Waiting until after the initial rush may prove beneficial and allowyou more time to speak with the recruiters.
√ When you first enter the fair, take a moment to orient yourselfto the environment.
Review the layout and think about how you want to navigate theroom. Prioritize employers you want to meet. Some tables mayhave lines of people waiting to speak to the recruiter; wait in linepatiently, your turn will come.
√ Many employers will have “give-aways”.It’s OK to take one, but don’t grab too many or make it looklike you shopping for your kids and grandkids.
√ When you step up to the table:1. Smile. It shows confidence and encourages conversation2. Extend your hand for a firm, confident handshake and
introduce yourself 3. Offer your resume
√ Be prepared to have an “interview-like” conversation.Talk about your skills, knowledge areas and abilities.
√ Ask for a business card from an employer.√ Ask about the next steps in the application process.
If the employer suggests that you call if you are interested in theposition, make every effort to do so the next day.
√ Before you walk away from the table, shake their hand and say“Thank You!”

A JOB VS. ACAREER:FIGURINGOUT HOW TOGET THERE
By
Cyn
thia
A. M

on
Once you know what you want to pursue – a job or a
career – you need to figure out how to achieve your end
goal. Consider the following questions:
- What is your work experience?
If there is a particular industry in which you worked
previously, it will be easier to move from one job to
another in that same industry. For example, if you
worked in a restaurant, you are more likely to change
positions within the food-service industry. A career
change – for example from finance to social services
– might require some additional education and training.
- What is your education?
Even if your first job did not match your educational
background, your education and training can help you
move to a new position. For example, maybe you
received training in business applications and office
procedures, but your first job was filling orders in a
warehouse. The skills you gained on the job, and the
education you have, might suit you for a position with
an order fulfillment company, where you may encounter
long-term career options.
- Do you have the skills to switch from one industry to
another?
If you want to switch from one career to another, you
can. Just remember that you need to leverage the skills
you gained to meet the needs of a new career. Create a
list of your strengths and skills acquired in your previous
positions and make notes on how they would relate to a
new career.
If many of your skills are non-transferable – perhaps
because they were specialized or you worked in a small
environment that did not keep up with changing
technology – consider returning to school for some
training. Regardless of whether you can afford to quit
working to go back to school, first consider taking a
night class or two at the local community college and
explore your options.

On Mistakes
10 General
Ask job seekers what
their goal is in terms of
their employment search
most of them will tell
you that it is "to get a
job." While that
certainly is the intent of
the end result of their
job search campaign,
one of the early lessons
I learned in my Five
O'Clock Club career
coaching studies is that
your goal throughout
your campaign is to
"get the next interview."
As I continue to work
with a growing range
of clients I am
observing first hand the
value of this type of
focus. The job search in
and of itself is very
stressful and can cause
great swings in one's
emotions no matter how
well their campaign is
organized. However, I
find my clients most
energized when they
have identified a new
contact with whom they
have the opportunity to
discuss their search, or
know they have an
upcoming interview
which may help lead
them to an eventual
position.

When you stop and think about it this actually makes a lot ofsense. When one finds themselves in job search, in the earlystages the only ones who may actually know they're in searchare close family and friends other than the individual insearch themselves. Close family and friends while many timessupportive are too close to you and can be emotionally tiedto your journey. As you begin to reach out and first speak tothose that don't know you about your search several thingsbegin to happen. First, you begin to gain clarity as to how topresent yourself both in terms of who you are, what you havedone and what you are seeking to do as you go forward. Asyou learn to become a better interviewer, you use theexchange as both an opportunity to get and give information.
You learn to be as prepared or more prepared as the oneyou are interviewing by both having researched some on thetopic you are about to speak and by having your questionsready so as to learn what it is that you don't know and whichwill help benefit you in your search going forward. Those thatget proficient at the process learn to listen from theperspective of a consultant. A consultant is always looking tohear what it is that the other person finds to be difficult forthem, and seeks an opportunity to show how they are ableto help address the problem. Finally, an individual that has asolution for another and sees an opportunity to help willfollow-up with that person offering a proposal of how theymay be able to solve their issue.
The predominant tendency many people have while they arein job search is to approach things passively. They may sendout many resumes' to a number of different companies. They'llmeet someone who says they know a person that may beable to help them and then wait for their contact to set up ameeting with another as opposed to taking the contactinformation and setting up the meeting themselves. After a jobinterview they'll write a thank you note, but then just sit backand wait on contact from a company as opposed tofollowing up to gain an understanding of where the companyis in their search process or if new developments haveemerged. There is a great sense of not wanting to upset thehiring manager or resource with whom you desire to speakfrom fear of being perceived as a bother.
Yes a focus and strategy of making getting the next interviewyour goal takes courage. It does involve a lot of persistence
on the part of the job searcher. However, it certainly keepsone involved as an active participant in their search. Thosewho fully commit to this approach learn quickly to talk to asmany individuals as possible that may help them in theirsearch. They'll take the time to set up meetings with those whomay not have a job opening at the current time, but who maybe able to provide needed information or guidance as theypursue their search in their field of choice. They'll not focustheir energies all on one job opening, but look to haveseveral opportunities working for them at the same time.Above all, they reach the point where they realize it is worseto sit back and wait for something to happen, as opposed topossibly being told they are no longer a candidate for aposition and knowing they have made every effort to presentwhat they offer to that position.
Therefore, if you find yourself in job search in 2012, eitherthrough your own choice or through circumstances that arenot of your choosing, remember finding that next job is theend point to which you are looking to get. The true goal is totalk to as many people as you can along the way about yoursearch. And, whether those interviews are just to gainvaluable information about the field or type of position youare seeking, to make more people in the profession awareyou are in job search or actually to interview for a positionitself, you always should be looking to get that next interview.Making this a regular practice will not only assist you inleading you to your next job, but is advice to continue withonce that job is secured and as you move beyond that joband forward with your career.

AUGUSTA — Governor Paul LePageannounced legislation on Feb. 22,2012 that would merge the MaineDepartment of Agriculture, Food andRural Resources with the MaineDepartment of Conservation into asingle Maine Department ofAgriculture, Conservation andForestry. The goal of the legislation isto strengthen Maine's natural-resourceeconomy in the areas of forestry, farming and conservation. Thislegislation is expected to go to theJoint Standing Committee onAgriculture, Conservation and Forestryfor consideration and approval.
"Farming and forestry are animportant part of Maine's heritage, and can play a significant role in oureconomic engine," said GovernorLePage. "These industries areimportant to Maine's future, and it isimportant we maximize the potentialof our natural resource-basedeconomy to provide jobs andeconomic prosperity to Mainepeople."
Agriculture Commissioner WalterWhitcomb, ConservationCommissioner Bill Beardsley, alongwith many leaders in the naturalresource industry, support theGovernor's plan. Many agree thatthere is a possibility to greatlyenhance Maine's forestry and farmingindustries, while capitalizing on our
natural resources.
"Growing Maine's natural economywhile protecting its long termproductivity needs the support of moreconcentrated services from a singledepartment," noted CommissionerWhitcomb.
"The sustainable goals envisioned byMaine farmers, forest owners andthose who use the parks and publiclands will be better coordinated bymerging the wide array of resourcerelated skills within the talentedworkforce of these two departments,"added Whitcomb.
"Agriculture and forestry, conservationand public access to Maine's naturalresources are all intertwined," saidCommissioner Beardsley. "A mergerthat yokes the two departments simplymakes sense. By combining forces,we can focus on the scientificfoundation and the common groundwe share as we pursue a 21st-centurynatural-resource economy for Maine,"Beardsley continued.
Representative Jeff Timberlake, R-Turner, is the lead sponsor of the billand has been involved in the farmcommunity his entire life. "It makessense to combine the resources ofboth departments to emphasize theimportance of being good stewards ofMaine's land," said RepresentativeTimberlake.
