    my hometown

Ill admit it, I dont like change, despite the fact Im facing one! Ive always thought of myself as a creature of habit. For instance, I routinely hang my purse on the same hook in the hallway. I keep an ample supply of ATM deposit envelopes in the side pocket of my car and I encourage my teenagers to keep their car keys in a defined spot, like I do, so they dont lose them. Mine are always near the telephone, next to a candid family photo of my kids when they were much younger.

August marks a new beginning for students in Estrella. My daughters will join in the ranks on Wednesday, August 5, as that first school bell chimes, marking the beginning of another season. Mine are anticipating graduation in the spring; a season of change that I find myself resisting.

I thought it appropriate to dedicate this issue to Back to School and Stress Reduction -- two obstacles that will be a challenge personally in the coming weeks. For many families, the school year marks a season that outlines more defined schedules. The routine adds

familiar structure to the weekdays, which most recently involved relaxed afternoons near the pool that simply melted into weekends with no regard to the structure of time.

Change - its the one element of our lives that remains the same. Are you ready? This month, I invite you to enjoy our cover story, introducing a super-star educator in the community as well as capture tips on reducing stress to help get your familys routine back on track. Parents, maybe youll consider voice lessons from a new com-munity business, Morris Vocal Studios, for your future American Idol?

Soon, Ill throw my arms around my almost grown-up girls, offering those first-day of school hugs, the ones Ive given them for the past twelve first school days. Again, Ill bite my bottom lip and ask them, Where have those little girls gone? And without skipping a beat, theyll smile and point to that picture on the kitchen counter and reply, Over there, next to your keys! And they will excitedly race off to their senior year of high school.

    on your doorstep

after spending a summer of sleeping in without the

dreaded alarm clock, its time once again to go back

to school. wednesday, august 5, 2009 marks the

official first day of school for liberty school District

and buckeye union high school District students.

Yes students, its time to crack open the books, open

fresh doors to new activities and friendships, and

absorb a whole new years worth of knowledge from

the wealth of this communitys committed educators.

One of those enlightening teachers is susi griffin.

susi teaches in the special education Department at

    estrella foothills high school.

the following excerpt is submitted by bev Jenkins,

m.a. ed., Director of special services, buckeye union

    high school District.

i knew three years ago, when susi griffin came to me as an intern, that

she was something special. susi was a seasoned business veteran and

had managed several successful sylvan learning centers before decid-

ing that she wanted to teach special education. while attending asu,

estrella foothills was her first assignment as an intern. at that time, i

was the special education Department chair and was her supervisor for

the internship. it soon became clear that susi was a master at assisting

students in various content areas by presenting material with a fresh

approach, and helping students view curriculum in new ways. all stu-

dents can learn, some just learn differently, and susi helped them find

    superstar teacher - susi griffin

the way best suited to the individual student. after

completing the internship, she went on to assist

students with special needs at the elementary level,

and eventually finished first in her class and won the

    Outstanding student award at asu.

susi was recruited by the elementary school where

she student-taught and had her contract in hand

when she called me up to tell me something didnt

feel right. timing is everything. it turns out that just

that very week, an unexpected opening developed

in the special education department on the foothills

campus and the rest is history. susi became the

english teacher and Department chair for special

education on the estrella foothills campus, and she

    hit the ground running.

it was evident right away that susi had star quality. susi is innovative and

creative and sets high standards for her students. her philosophy is that

every student, regardless of their disability, has a gift and its her job to

discover that gift. susi works with students with disabilities ranging from

learning disabilities, to cognitive disabilities, to autism, to hearing impair-

ments, and emotional disabilities. she knows every student with a disabil-

ity on her campus, and their strengths and weaknesses. she finds a way

to help every student maximize their potential. her students love her, as

do parents and staff. susi will begin her second year at estrella foothills

this month. she is one, among many educators, that this community is

    fortunate to employ.

im amazing - written by estrella resident, Denise sowers

Estrella resident, Denise Sowers, is the mother of three of her own grown, yet always amazing, children. She recently put seeds of thought into a paperback book titled, Im Amazing. She wanted to create a book that would put the growth of a baby into language that a child could under-stand and that would make it interesting for little ones. The book tells the develop-ment story through the eyes of a child.

Denise submitted the manuscript to two different publishers - one local and one national. She received a contract with-in six weeks from a national publishing company, but chose the local publisher so that her book could be available in a timelier manner.

Denise is unsure if she will write another book, but she tosses the idea of having a sequel called Im Still Amazing, which would give information about a childs first year. For now, she works on marketing her first book - Im Amazing. If you are interested in learning more about the Estrella resident or obtaining a copy of Denises book, you may contact her through her website at www.imamazingbook.com.

goodyear white tanks rotary makes significant impact on community

Great spirit, great ideas and great people are just a few of the elements that make up a group of individuals called the Goodyear White Tanks Rotary Club. This club has grown by leaps and bounds to make a significant impact on the surrounding community, says President-elect, David Lesnick. The Rotary group who routinely places service above self is proactive in wiping out hunger, improving health conditions and providing educa-tional opportunities for recipients worldwide. Recently, the Goodyear White Tanks Rotary Club held their annual Night in the Tanks fundraiser. This family cookout incorporated over 75 guests. Among them, our very own Mayor Cavanaugh and his wife. More than $2,000 was raised at the fundraiser for the clubs Vocational Scholarship Fund. This event was made possible by two sponsors: Points West Sales Food Brokerage, who donated all of the food and equipment for the evenings festivi-ties, and Mid First Bank, who did a coin match for all of the coins that the club mem-bers brought in. Some of the charities that are supported by Goodyear White Tanks Rotary are West Valley Arts Council, Boys and Girls Club, Southwest Valley YMCA, Agua Fria Food Bank, Eves Place, and the Rotary Youth Exchange.

In July, Cassie Wilkins, a guest of Armin from All Faith Community Services, presented information to the group on poverty within the community and ideas to combat poverty. Also, Marissa Fay Watson is scheduled to speak regarding some of the laws of estate planning. For more information on the Goodyear White Tanks Rotary Club, please contact President-elect, David Lesnick at 623-412-9602 or [email protected].

the environmental maniac - chris slotten

chris slotten calls himself the environmental maniac. he has taken his goal to save the environ-

ment to new heights by helping community members. One of the maniacs goals is to save the energy

equivalent to 20,000,000 barrels of oil a year by the end of 2013and thats just in arizona.

when the Olsen family lost their home to fire several months ago, chris slotten was one of many

community members who assisted this family to help them get back on their feet. when the Olsens

home was rebuilt, utilizing new technologies, chris installed a new Dual plane attic and evaac

evaporation aided air conditioning system into the newly rebuilt beazer home. now, summer at the

Olsen house reveals a 53% savings on air conditioning costs and that was in the month of may. thats

a big savings! says chris. now that the temperatures are more normal, above 100 degrees, the on-

going test results are indicating over 60% savings. the significance of these results is revolutionary. if

all new homes in the desert could be built saving 60% on air conditioning, the biggest energy demand

on the power grid would be drastically reduced. the economic and environmental ramifications are

    exciting, stated chris.

evaac (www.evaac.com) is like adding a swamp cooler around an existing air conditioner. air con-

ditioners are designed and built around seer (seasonal energy efficiency rating). seer testing is done

at 95 degrees outside, 75 degrees inside. the hotter it gets, the less efficient air conditioners become.

in phoenix where there are always 100 days over 100 and hot is defined by the teen (113, 114, etc.),

air conditioners are working beyond their design criteria. by pre-cooling the air entering the air

conditioners condenser, the air conditioner is more efficient. pre-cooling is not new. the first patent

was issued in 1939. what is new is a system designed, tested and manufactured in arizona for arizona.

evaac saves 35% on air conditioning and yields a 100% return in the first season.

the excitement is that the Olsen house proves that saving energy is far more cost effective than pro-

ducing clean energyand it is only the beginning. for more information on how to improve your air

conditioning savings, visit www.environmentalmaniac.com/home1.htm. chris can be reached at sim-

    [email protected] or 623-261-4468.

    girls summer league basketball

The Lady Wolves basketball team is com-ing off of a school record of eleven wins last season. The season set the school record for points per game, points in a season, 3 point field goals attempted and made in a game and in the season. We literally broke every program record there was, stated Coach Mike Arana. In order to prepare the squad for another successful season during the upcoming school year, a summer league has enabled the girls to practice and play, play, play. Summer play allowed the girls to compete in over 40 games throughout the summer.

Coach Arana admits that hes got another tough team this year and with hard work and determination the Wolves are sure to shine! We have a very hard working group, who is determined to continue the program-wide project that we started last year of making EFHS Girls Basketball a powerhouse, he said. The program expectation this year is to win the West Region and finally hang a banner in the gym for the girls basketball program. Last years squad left a tough act to follow. Off of that team, we lost 80% of our offense to graduation. We lost 1st team all region guard and Captain Kiah Washington, 2nd team all region and Arizona Republic honorable mention, Katie Payne, and honorable mention all region forward Zyeshia Johnson. Of our returners, we are a bit undersized, but very quick, included Arana. Key returners from last year include: senior and Captain Samantha Johnson, senior Captain Maddie Bogart, sophomore Melissa Martinez, junior CJ Broadbent, senior Cassie Loveless, and two talented freshmen, Caitlyn Bynre and starting point guard Savannah Eklund. Savannah was just named to 1st team All Tournament at the Desert Hoops Shootout; she was the second leading scorer in the entire tournament as an incoming freshman. Best of luck Lady Wolves in your upcoming season which begins in November 2009.

and, then it was off to the water park for more fun!!!! three hundred red, white, and blue beach balls, donated by Dlc resources, lined the pool! peter piper pizza provided free drink and pizza coupons for partici-pants. parents received free kids meals to cracker barrel for par-ticipating in the Ymca, lots of crazy dance moves. we even had a DJ to spin a few tunes for us from celestial nights family entertainment. wal-mart also donated a brinkman gas grill that was won by carla. also won was a wonderful gift basket from see spot clean for our furry family members! we would also like to extend a thank you to barrett homes contractors, Dlc resources, inc., and foliage landscaping for their monetary donations. we appreciate your generosity.

it was great to hear the whole family yell hooray when weston found out he won the bike! Or when brianna matlock won a swirls gift card for singing and knowing all the words to star spangled banner! Or maybe it was just the joy we felt celebrat-ing our nations independence with family, friends, and the sense of community living in estrella. we hope to see you all next year.

The Importance of Maintaining Sight Lines

    by Dlc resources, inc.

as you approach an intersec-tion, you need to have a clear view of approaching vehicles, pedestri-ans and any other obstacle in the area. Dlc resources, inc., your communitys landscape manage-ment provider, assesses the inter-sections weekly for common area landscape material that might affect visibility at intersections. if a tree or shrub affects visibility from the ground to approximately 10 feet in height, Dlc prunes or removes the plant as necessary.

this helps maintain sight line vis-ibility at all the intersections in estrella and makes the commu-nity safer. additionally, Dlc and the community management consider common area landscape material that encroaches on bike lanes and sidewalks hazardous for residents. these plants are also trimmed and removed as neces-sary to keep pathways clear for resident use.

as the growing season accel-erates with the arrival of hot tem-peratures, assess the area around your home for possible sight line obstructions. plant material should be kept off of sidewalks and walk-ways in order to prevent slipping and to prevent people from walk-ing into the street to avoid the plant. also, check the height of your trees branches. tree branches over streets, sidewalks and drive-ways should be no less than seven feet above the ground so bicyclists and vehicles can easily pass under the branches. additionally, review the density and height of plant material at the end of your drive-way. ideally, plants should be no more than two feet tall so you are able to clearly see pedestrians and vehicles coming down the street. maintaining sight line visibility is critical to ensuring your commu-nitys intersections are as safe as possible for you and your family as you walk, bike and drive around this summer.

if you have a concern regard-ing common area plant mate-rial encroaching on the sidewalk or street, contact the association Office.

Kurt and Dee Hanke love their family life in Estrella. Dee has been a resident in the community since 2002 and Kurt arrived in the community in 2008. Dee and her children chose to call Estrella home because of its friendly community feel and its beautiful scenery and surrounding mountains. Dee is originally from the Midwest and Kurt is origi-nally from Canada. Both Kurt and Dee love all that Arizona has to offer and couldnt imagine living where its cold, ever again. The couple has two chil-dren, Caleb and Olivia, who are fun-loving, energetic kids! The four of us have a great connection! says Dee. We work together as a team. In fact, in addition to Caleb enjoying his skate boarding, he is also eager to help with the family business, Handyman Xtreme. Olivia, too, enjoys helping the family business, but also loves family movie nights with homemade popcorn even more. In their free time, the Hankes like to spend time together playing at Starpointe WaterPark, splashing in their own pool, or walking around the Phoenix Zoo viewing the animals from around the world. Both children are also dedicated to helping the environ-ment by recycling and saving water whenever possible. The Hanke family has found that another great way to help the environment includes finding ways to use things longer for various purposes and not throw them away. At Handyman Xtreme, items are repaired all the time. Prolonging the life

the hanke familyof certain items and keeping them out of our landfills is our goal, maintains Kurt. In fact, the majority of what Handyman Xtreme does involves helping the environment in one way or another, like repairing dripping faucets and running toilets to conserve water or installing ceiling fans to reduce AC usage. As a family, we conserve water, utilize a programmable thermostat and run our appliances in the evening hours to save on energy costs. We recycle everything we can and bike or walk whenever possible (especially to grandmas house only few blocks away), says Dee.

Kurt and Dee are active members of the Estrella Mountain Church and donate one day each month to complete repair work for the members of the community who cannot afford to hire someone due to economic challenges. Kurt & Dee Hanke have also founded an organization called Project HOPE (Helping Other People Everyday) for those families in need. Project HOPE brings the community, churches and other businesses together to help on a much larger scale. Currently, Project HOPE is helping a local family who recently lost everything, but the clothes on their backs in a house fire. Theres nothing more exciting than seeing people ban together to help oth-ers they may not even know, especially in a tough economic climate, says Kurt. If you would like to share in this wonderful feeling of giving, you can contact Kurt & Dee Hanke at 602-524-1234.

Stress ReductionUnderstanding StressinfOrmatiOn submitteD bY Dr. trOY peters, peters wellness

    chirOpractic, inc. , www.peterswellness.cOm

If not dealt with properly, stress can take the form of many aches and pains within the body. This is called Neuro Expression. What is stress to you? What form has it taken in your life?

Lets start with Emotional Stress. With many emotional stressors, the cause may be beyond our control (i.e. death of a loved, divorce, job loss). For this reason, it is important for all of us to have a support system in place to help us in time of crisis.

We also face Chemical Stress because are surrounded by chemicals. So, how do we limit our exposure? People know the value of drinking purified water, but what about the pesticides and herbicides that remain on and in our fruits and vegetables? We can buy organic, which is an excellent step, but dont forget to consider the same criteria for any supplements and vitamins you take.

What about Structural Stress? If you have been involved in an auto accident or a slip and fall, whether recently or twenty years ago, the stress to the structural integrity of the spine and nervous system can lead to many neurological stressors, resulting in disease in the body. When joints are used in this malfunctioning state it causes inflammation of the surrounding bursa, tissue, tendons and joints. With proper maintenance such as exercise, eating right and reducing stress, your body will serve you well for years to come.

Golf Your Stress Away!submitteD bY tOm cOrtabitarte, general manager,

    www.estrellagOlf.cOm

Mental health experts have helpful tips on reducing stress and, interestingly enough, golf is often one of their prescriptions. For a low-aerobic workout, golf is the perfect fit. Youre walking almost 4 miles (not always on level ground) and the kicker is that youre concentrating on your golf game and not the walk.

Experts mostly agree on the stress-relieving benefit of having a strategy for dealing with lifes curves such as high mortgage rates, staff reductions and other family issues. Golf can be the perfect model for strategy and pre-planning. Prior to your round, take a scorecard and score each hole based on your average game. Dont be concerned how you relate to PAR, just be honest in your own assess-ment of your game. Then plan a strategy for playing each hole, like teeing off with your 3-wood rather than pulling out the driver. Not only will you increase your fairways hit in regulation stat, youre also going to lower your score. Having set a realistic expectation for your round, you eliminate the negative thoughts that creep into your game when you double bogey the first hole.

Golf is the game for the ages and with exercise and planning as key ingredi-ents a game you can play for a lifetime.

Stress is a part of our daily existence. Currently, our economic situation as a whole, adds to our anxiety, whether your situation has been directly effected or not. Many of us have stopped unnecessary purchases, cancelled gym member-ships, called off a vacation or sacrificed in a number of other ways. Several factors may possibly be beyond our control, however, a few still are. Here are a few tips to deter stress: Get enough sleep. Rest is imperative (7-8 hours).

Exercise (15 minutes at the very least. Hey, its more than you are doing now!)

Make better choices. Instead of a meal, order a la carte. Eat your veggies first!

Find your inner I think I can and YOU will! Remember the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy.

Breathetake a walk when you want to explode. Exercise, combined with fresh HOT Arizona air, is an amazing relief when you need it.

Look at the positives in your life and the value that they bring to you.

as you prepare to wrap up summer and shift into a busy fall schedule, the following are some ideas to reduce

stress and anxiety, submitted by our community members.

Th e Mind-Skin ConnectioninfOrmatiOn prOviDeD bY Jennifer Dursteler at DJ vu

    meD spa, www.DeJavumeDspa.cOm

Does your skin break out or flare up when you experience stress? The mind and the skin are closely linked. In many cases, stress can lead to an increase in acne, alopecia (hair loss), eczema, hives, rosacea, psoriasis, and vitiligo (white spots on the skin). Stress can also manifest itself as insomnia, weight gain, muscle tension, headaches, and hypertension.

When you are tense, your body releases hormones. One of them is cortisol, which can increase the skins oil production, making you prone to pimples. Cortisol can also lead to carbohydrate cravings which can cause weight gain.

The following recommendations are some preventative measures to take at home to curb skin irritations brought on by stress: Eat and drink sensibly - Avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Assert yourself - Its OK to say no.

Stop smoking - Nicotine is a stimulant which causes additional stress on the mind and body.

Exercise regularly - Aerobic exercise has been shown to release endorphins, enhance self-esteem and improve sleep.

Relax every day - Take time out of the day for yourself.

Take responsibility Accept what you can change and leave behind what you cant.

Prioritize - Be more effective at time-management.

Examine your values and live by them - The more your actions reflect your beliefs, the better you will feel, no matter how busy your life is.

Set realistic goals and expectations - Realize you cannot be 100% all of the time.

Work on your self-esteem - When you are feeling overwhelmed, remind yourself of what you do well.

Get more rest - You need time to recover from exercise and stressful events.

You should be getting 7-8 hours per night.

    Information excerpted from webmd.com: http://www.webd.com/balance/stress/management/tc/stress-relief-relaxation

Stress is a fact of life. Although some stress is normal and even needed, too much of it can affect your quality of life and your health. No matter what your age, there are simple things you can do to help relieve stress. Try: Taking a slow deep breath.

    Soaking in a warm bath.

    Listening to soothing music.

Taking a walk or do some other physical activity.

    Meditating.

    Taking a yoga class.

Having a massage or back rub.

Having a warm drink that doesnt have alcohol or caffeine.

    Gettting plenty of sleep

Staying connected to your family and friends.

    Getting regular exercise.

Dont drink or eat anything with caffeine in it. Caffeine can make you feel wound up and more stressed.

Dont smoke or use tobacco. Nicotine can make you feel more anxious.

Dont drink alcohol. It can cause sleep problems and depression.

Dont Heat Up the KitchenAugust is still pretty hot here in the Valley. Making dinner without heating up the kitchen becomes top priority. Not turning on the oven doesnt have to mean feeding your family bologna sandwiches and potato chips everyday.

Try packet cooking on the grill. A complete din-ner can be quickly assembled in a foil packet and cooked on the grill in less than 15 minutes.

The slow cooker can be a working moms best friend. Toss together the ingredients before you leave for work, plug in the unit and dinner is ready when you walk in the door at night.

Pressure cooking reduces the cooking time by up to 70%. Foods that ordinarily would require long, slow roasting in an oven, can be cooked with a pressure cooker in a fraction of the time and the kitchen never even gets warm.

    2 cups broccoli florets

    2 cups carrots, thinly sliced

    Grace Broze. 623-693-3343

After Grace Broze retired from her stressful job with the airlines just over five years ago, she went to work in a childcare center in Avondale to stay busy. I was just too energetic to stay home and do nothing, recalls the Estrella daycare provider. The center had me work with the infants in what they called the babies room and I absolutely loved it, remembers Grace. She decided to continue her passion for caring for newborns locally. It didnt take much to convince her husband, Robert, who had also retired from a demanding career in manufacturing, to jump on board as an assistant with babies who required nothing but tender loving care at a much slower

pace than his previous working world. Thus, Graces Day Care Services was born.

Grace, who was born in the small town of Asuncion, Paraguay in South America, first came over to the United States as an exchange student. The conditions of her visit to the U.S. included the condition that she return to South America to finish her education. She had fallen in love with the United States and her husband, Robert, during her visit as a foreign exchange student and was excited to return permanently to call America her home.

Grace and Robert have one grown son who lives close by in Phoenix. He visits his parents frequently. While Grace enjoys her sons visits, she is also happy to be able to provide continual maternal care to the beautiful babies that are part of her extended weekdays. My day begins very early in the morning, often at 6:30 a.m. and continues into the 6 or 7 p.m. evening hours. Graces Day Care Services prides itself in providing a peaceful atmosphere for the little ones by incorporating classical music into dreamy time with the infants and homemade breakfasts including pancakes and fresh fruit for the toddlers. Fresh lunches and snacks are also provided. Grace often finds herself dancing to Disney tunes with the older youngsters, ages two and three, after playtime in a play area dedicated to creative young minds, incorporating a variety of toys.

As you might imagine, Grace and Robert become pretty attached to their clientele who lovingly refer to Grace and Robert as Mimi and Papa, respectively. Their young little weekday visitors are like family, reports the day care provider. When they arent surrounded by wiggly little ones, Grace enjoys reading and browsing the malls located throughout the Valley of the Sun, while Robert unwinds outdoors on the golf course. Grace and Robert are trained in CPR and First Aid. If you are interested in daycare services for your newborn or toddler up to the age of three years, please contact Grace Broze at 623-693-3343.

pictured are robert and grace broze along with abbey, tanner, nathan, luke and emma.
