publications that build community

my hometown

Got the Fever?

The brisk mornings of winter are quickly transforming into warm sunny afternoons, allowing colorful evening sunsets to linger a little longer on the southwest horizon with each passing day. It’s this time of year when we begin to experience a whispering nudge from Mother Nature. Her annual reminder to tackle clean-up tasks in and around the house suddenly becomes a part of the rite of spring. And have you noticed that spring cleaning produces personal benefits of replenished energy along with self-satis-faction that come from a spiffed up home and yard? That’s a plus for you and for the community.

This month My Hometown Estrella helps you ‘come clean’ with tips on where to begin and how to maintain organization in and around your home before the busy activities of summer fill our calendars. I’ve included some easy ‘recipes’ to make your own green-cleaning products. Enjoy pointers from neighborhood contribu-tors on ways to improve your home’s value, your parent-ing skills and even your real estate purchasing power. We’re introducing a “blooming” family in our Meet

Your Neighbor piece this month. Our cover story highlights a local humani-tarian who utilizes her gifts as a swim instructor to plant seeds of knowledge into a country where people are in desperate need.

With Earth Day just around the corner, I’m wondering if you have ideas to share about ways to promote a more eco-friendly environment. Have you recently arranged a carpool to

help combat those rising gasoline prices? Maybe you’re growing organic produce in your backyard. How has your lifestyle recently become more ‘green?’ I’d like to hear from you! And speaking of green, don’t forget to support local Girl Scout Troup #2150 by purchasing some of your favorite cookies in front of Safeway this month. Those sweet sales will help the girls with travel costs for an important trip they’ve got planned in the near future.

I hope you’ll find the following pages helpful, as My Hometown helps you outline top to bottom sprucing up. Make it a green, clean spring!

Betheny King has already accomplished a great deal early into 2011. She wasted no time putting her lifeguard train-ing and swim skills to work to help others through a nation-al volunteer program, Project: Swim International. In January, Betheny and five other volun-teers formed a group that taught nearly 2000 women and children, in a distressed country, valuable skills that would help save lives. Her group of six traveled to one of the oldest cities in India to combat the drowning deaths that devastate the country each and every monsoon season. During their three week stay, which Betheny describes as one of the most memorable teaching experiences of her life, the volunteers trained locals to swim, so that they might continue the instruction within their own communities, in order to save the lives of the children of India for generations to come.

It all began late last year, as the Estrella resident-turned college student, worked a part-time job at the downtown YMCA in Tucson as a lifeguard and swim instructor while attending the local University. She heard about Project: Swim International from a co-worker who was leading a group of swim instructors to Madurai, India. The need for swim instruction in India was desperately needed, due to the mass numbers of people who die each monsoon season because of an inability to swim. The numbers are estimated at 1,500 each year.

The adventure sounded interesting, so she applied. Not long afterwards, Betheny was chosen to participate. Upon arrival, the swim instructors would visit many schools in rural and slum areas and teach water safety and water survival skills. “Our mission was to travel to local schools of Madurai and Tamil Nadu to teach students from ages seven to seventeen water safety and CPR. We also visited a charitable trust that focuses on women’s empower-ment and taught groups of underprivileged women how to save someone who was drowning and how to protect themselves in dangerous situations around water,” stated Betheny.

Getting to India was no easy task. Volunteers were responsible for their own transportation and program fee. Betheny raised some of the money through outreach programs. The rest, she paid for herself. It took her small group five days to get to India. Arriving at their destination proved to be

quite an experience in itself. After the long journey, the group settled in Maduri. Betheny described the people there as both warm and wel-coming. She recalls how she and her group of volunteers had garlands placed around their necks and how they received gifts of towels sewn by women in the Charitable Trust’s Women’s Empowerment program.

In return, the volunteers presented students with gifts of clothing, books and backpacks.

“We taught water safety and CPR to a total of 1,943 people over the course of 10 days! Our most memorable teaching experience was the 50 adult women at the Madurai Non-Formal Education Centre (MNEC), an organi-zation that provides women from rural and urban slums with food, medical supplies and education. It also has a center for HIV/AIDS for women and children. These women were fantastic! They were so eager to learn, and they presented each of us with beautiful flower garlands. At the end of our lesson, a few of them came up to us and thanked us. One woman told us how they witness drownings fairly often, and described feeling hopeless because they didn’t know what to do.” Betheny said that she and her group were so moved by these women that they donated their teaching bags will all of their teach-ing supplies and scripts to them so that they would have resources to continue training others.

“Overall this was a great opportunity to give something back to a com-munity in need, while learning about the Indian culture. India taught me so much about life, myself and others in just a few short weeks,” said Betheny. The group of volunteers (Betheny, Bela, Carley, Caitlin and Jesse) had some time to experience the Indian culture before returning to the U.S. They were able to visit the King’s Palace, a Temple filled with live animals, including an elephant ride, and to learn a few Tamil words to help them communicate on their journey.

Betheny Taylor King has lived in Estrella since she was in the second grade with her mother, father and sister. She attended Estrella Mountain Elementary School and graduated from Estrella Foothills High School in the spring of 2007. She is currently studying psychology as a student at the University of Arizona in Tucson. If you would like to learn more about vol-unteering to help others in India, visit www.universalgiving.org or Google Project: Swim International.

estrella entrepreneur- debra goley

Debra cannot remember when art was not a major part of her life. She began to sketch things in elementary school and by the age of fourteen, found herself sketching at the base of the Acropolis in Greece. This led to her love of Architecture and she later received a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Texas in Austin in 1988.

Debra and her family moved to Arizona in 2003. She and her family are Estrella resi-dents where she co-owns Bella Villa Designs, a decorative design and mural business. Debra

founded Summer KIDZ ART CAMP, and serves as Director of Arts for the magazine, Director’s Cut. She is a Board member for The Creative Arts Academy and owns and operates Art d’Triomphe, a studio for teaching art to local children of all ages. She did a great deal of travel while growing up and has lived in Aruba, Libya, U.A.E and Qatar,

allowing her to experience many different cultures and styles, evident in her acrylic oil paintings and most recently her mixed media work. Debra’s special interests include working with children, where she helps them develop their personal creativity. She recently worked on a month-long project at a nearby elementary school, where she helped kindergarten through sixth grade stu-dents develop techniques for shade, shadow, perspective and color contrast as the students painted their favorite storybook pictorials on the walls of their school’s gymnasium. Debra also completed murals for the Burn Unit at Maricopa County Hospital as a volunteer project and has assisted with plan-ning and visuals of ball field perspectives for grant initiatives with Estrella Youth Sports within the City of Goodyear. Most recently, the Estrella artist completed a painting for the Christmas Eve service at Estrella Mountain Church and the nativity canvas in her own front yard. In 2011, Debra has set her sights on a variety of new projects. As a wife, mother and artist, Debra Goley has proven to be one of the citizens in our neighborhood who has uti-lized her gifts and talents to give back to this community!

These “ACTION passports” can be turned in at the final event, Goodyear In ACTION Day later this year (November 5 at the Goodyear Community Park) in exchange for big prizes!

Last year, Follow the ACTION was aimed at combating childhood obe-sity. This year, we’re extending our programs to families and people of all ages. While children will be trying out active activities, moms, dads, and seniors will be working with fitness experts on earning their Presidential Active Lifestyle Awards. Goodyear In ACTION will award the Presidential Fitness Patches to those who achieve their goals at Goodyear In ACTION Day. For more infor-mation on event times and details visit GoodyearInACTION.com. estrella Mountain elementary school news

Estrella Mountain Elementary classrooms recently received emer-gency buckets. Supplying every classroom with emergency buckets is a timely and costly project and we appreciate everyone who assist-ed in making it happen. We especially want to thank our PTO for dedicating endless hours to researching the prices of items and assembling the buckets. The emergency buckets will provide our stu-dents and staff with essential supplies in the event of an emergency. Mark your calendars! Get ready for food, games, and prizes galore at our Carnival on March 4 from 4 to 7 pm. See you there!

On behalf of the staff of My Hometown Estrella, we extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Tara Shermerhorn. Tara will be warmly remembered throughout this community.

girl scout troop 2150 raises money through cookie sales

Thin mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Trefoils -- they’re all part of the favorites that local Girl Scout Troop 2150 is selling in hopes of meeting their goal of 4,000 boxes in total sales. They’re half way to that goal thus far. The troop, under the leadership of Sue Bailey, gives 10% of cookie sale earnings to cancer research with the majority of their earnings going towards a planned trip to Georgia later this spring, to visit the birth-place of Girl Scout Founder, Juliette Gordon for the 100 year anniversary.

Besides cookie sales, this troop meets each month to work on badges that help them bridge to higher levels of scouting. Residents in Estrella can help make the trip to Atlanta possible by purchasing cookies at the Safeway in Estrella on Friday, March 4 from 4 – 7 pm. The girls will also be in front of Chase Bank on Saturday, March 5 from 10 am – 1 pm. Come out and support your local scouts!

irgens Announces new medical

development in estrella

Irgens Health Care Facilities Group, a division of Irgens Development Partners, LLC, has recently agreed to purchase 5.3 acres of land in the Estrella community located at the south end of Goodyear, Arizona. The site is in Mountain Ranch Marketplace, a development located just north of Estrella Parkway at the Cotton Lane intersection. Irgens is acquiring the property from Newland Communities to construct Mountain Ranch Medical Commons, a 31,000 square foot, Class A medical office/profes-sional center.

Aggressive pre-leasing activities are underway. Irgens hired CB Richard Ellis to help market and lease space in the building to primary care physi-cians, medical specialists and other complementary providers.

“Mountain Ranch Medical Commons will offer this growing and underserved community access to high quality medical care and other health services,” said Jason Meszaros, Vice President and Arizona-office team leader for Irgens. “We’re excited to be working closely with our development partners and the local community to bring this exciting initiative forward.”

The architect for Mountain Ranch Medical Commons is 33 North. The single-story structure will offer efficient, custom designed medical space, upscale amenities and a sustainable design that conforms to standards of the Green Building Initiative (www.thegbi.org).

pizza nights set

Papa John’s Night will be March 9, but will return to its normal monthly schedule (the third Wednesday of the month) starting in April. Congratulations to Mrs. Randall’s first grade class! They were February’s “most sales” winners and enjoyed a pizza party for their recent efforts!

donuts for dad A success

The PTO and school volunteers recently showed their appreciation for our amazing Westar dads by serving them coffee, juice and donuts while they enjoyed sharing the sweet treat and time with their special student(s). At the end of the event, Westar was presented a generous check from the Safeway Foundation in the amount of $10,000. This was profit from the golf tournament held earlier this year at the Golf Club or Estrella as part of our community Safeway store’s grand opening.

estrella foothills high school news

The Lady Wolves Soccer team has won the State Championship for the third consecutive year!

EFHS Girl’s Basketball Team took Region Championship!

Thespians competed in the State Festival in mid-February.

dr. leslie standerfer reports:

At a recent pep assembly, officials from the Arizona Football Officials Association presented EFHS with the Matt O’Hanhila Sportsmanship Award for being the team, which displayed the best sportsmanship in the 3A division for the 2010 varsity football season. This award is attributed to the football players, coaches, spiritline members, and game workers for their conduct throughout the season. EFHS, during the same assembly, was pre-sented a generous $10,000 donation check from the Safeway Foundation. The donation was part of the proceeds from a golf tournament held in cel-ebration of the Estrella Mountain Ranch location of Safeway being opened, and will be used to help EFHS with the achievement of school improve-ment goals across all curricular areas. In February, EFHS also received a visit from the Arizona Educational Foundation in consideration for an A+ School of Excellence designation.

Don’t forget high school AIMS testing will take place March 1 & 2 and April 5 & 6. Campus will observe modified schedules on these days.

spring break is march 14-18.

each month, capital consultants management corporation will be highlighting an employee working in estrella. this month our focus is on sharon thunstedt. sharon is an Administrative coordinator, whose primary responsibility is support for the estrella Joint committee. much more than that however, sharon is our historian, and is the glue that holds all of our departments together. she began working for ccmc in estrella over 13 years ago. her wealth of knowledge on just about every aspect of the community makes sharon one of ccmc’s great-est assets at estrella. sharon began her career working as a receptionist out of elliott market. then upon completion of starpointe residents club in 2004, she moved to our current location in the resident services office.

sharon was born in the great state of texas and grew up in california and Arizona, then still as a child, lived on a cotton farm in harquahala Valley. After graduating from high school at

buckeye union, she met and married Jerry, her husband of 48 years. when asked what brings joy to her world, sharon was very quick to say, “my kids and my grand kids are everything to me.”

sharon is truly one of estrella’s greatest assets. in her role as my go

to person, sharon is extremely attentive, respon-sible, and shows incredible initiative in anticipat-ing issues before they arise. without sharon, estrella would not be the same. i am very proud to have her on our team.

when asked what she likes most about her job, sharon replied, “ i love my position at estrella, not only for the relationships i have built with the residents, but also for the incredible team that i work with.”

the next time you are in the starpointe residents club, please stop by the resident services office and take an opportunity to say hello to sharon. i believe you will find a wonder-ful person behind her name.

who Are the

people in your neighborhood

The O’Neil family of three is anxiously anticipating becoming a family of four! In early July, Kristi, Tom and 18-month old Parker, along with their best feline friends, Bisbee and Sedona, will welcome the newest member to their family - and they couldn’t be more excited!

At the time of this interview, it was still undetermined whether Parker would be a big brother to a new baby sister or brother. But, as soon as the doctor announces the secret, Tom’s getting started on the paint in the nursery, as Kristi continues to struggle with various color swatches. When the news is available, he’s also treating Kristi to a weekend getaway, including a special prenatal massage package at a resort in Sedona, Arizona. Little Parker will stay home and be spoiled by Grandma. The celebration weekend will include a trip in the stroller to one of Parker’s favorite neighborhood parks.

The O’Neils have been Montecito residents since September 2008, residing in a newly built Taylor-Morrison home that sits among a block of young families who have become Tom, Kristi and Parker’s great friends. “One neighbor,” Tom stated, “houses the neighborhood barbecue grill for our block parties.” That grill can accommodate an abundance of burgers for the tri-annual block party held on their street.

Tom and Kristi aren’t natives of Arizona, however. Prior to their move to Estrella, they lived in Tempe and various states around the country. In fact, they have quite a comical story of meeting each other in a parking garage in Oregon, followed by a chase around the country before marrying at Lake Tahoe, completing a wedding reception in Oregon, honeymooning in Hawaii and then jumping onto a plane headed to Arizona for Tom’s

tom, Kristi and Parker O’neil job as Operations Manager with Amazon in Phoenix. Well, it didn’t all actually happen quite that fast. Both grabbed MBA’s at various colleges and Kristi set aside a ten year teaching career helping college students learn English as a Second Language (ESL), includ-ing a position at Arizona State University and one at Estrella Mountain Community College before becoming a full-time mom. The O’Neils have enjoyed discovering Arizona and have traveled to Bisbee for the annual Blues Festival in the fall. They’ve wandered the switchbacks near Sedona and explored the histori-cal town of Jerome to scour the shops and dine at the

world-renowned restaurant called the Asylum. One of the couple’s favorite reality television shows, Jersey Shore,

prompted the trio to dress the part of its cast for a neighborhood Halloween party. Kristi piled up and painted on her “Snookie” hair, while Tom posed as Rhode Island’s hottie Italian-American with the hair gel, DJ Pauly D. Little Parker sported ‘abs of steel’ as “The Situation.” I can’t help but wonder which Jersey Shore cast member will be cloned by the newest member of the O’Neil family next fall?

Proper Tree Pruningthe value of pruning

In spring, the trees in Estrella will be flush with new growth. In a natural setting, a tree does not require pruning to remain healthy. However, when planted in the landscape around structures, streets and sidewalks, trees require some pruning for safety and aesthetic concerns. Before prun-ing a tree, it is important to understand why you should prune. Here are some of the most common reasons for pruning:

• Remove dead or damaged branches• Remove crowded, crossing or rubbing limbs• Keep limbs from blocking sight lines or encroaching on structures,

streets and walkways• Improve tree structure and stability to avoid storm damage

proper pruning practices

When you are properly equipped with good tools and knowledge, you are ready to go to work. Listed below are some general guidelines to remember when pruning:

• Do not remove more than 25% of a mature tree’s foliage• Make cuts that leave a wound which can close properly to help

avoid decay• Do not prune a newly-planted tree during the first year, except to

remove dead branches• Cut back to the union of two branches, not in the middle of a

branch• Pruning paints are not necessary and can cause damage to your tree• On large branches, use the three-cut method to prevent bark from

tearing down along the trunk (see diagram below)• If there is a good reason to prune a tree, pruning can be done almost

any time of the year. Use caution when heavily pruning just after spring growth as it may stress the tree.

tools for pruning

Having proper tools to prune your tree is important to the health of the plant material. Limbs up to ½ inch in diameter can be pruned with hand prun-ers. Long-handled pruning loppers can handle limbs up to 1 inch in diameter but a special pruning saw is needed for larger limbs. Hand pruners and loppers should be of the scissor or bypass type rather than anvil type. Hedging shears or power hedge trimmers should not be used to prune trees because they will not be able to make proper cuts and will damage the tree.

In addition to proper cutting tools, make sure you have safety equip-ment. It is a good idea to wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed shoes when pruning; additionally, wear safety glasses, a hat and gloves to help prevent an injury. Unless you are a trained tree worker, avoid using a ladder or climbing a tree to trim it. Most importantly, never attempt to prune a tree that is near a utility line!

Lastly, DLC recommends that you never top trees. Topping is the indiscriminate cutting back of tree branches to stubs. This practice stresses and disfigures trees and creates hazardous, weakly-attached, new branches. It also creates an added maintenance expense as topped trees require more frequent pruning.

For large trees or if you are in doubt, call a Certified Arborist. An Arborist can determine what type of pruning is needed and provide the service of a trained crew with the appropriate safety equipment and liability insurance. You can find a Certified Arborist at http://isa-arbor.com/findAr-borist/verifyArbByLoc.aspx.

tips for house and home

spring cleaning - tame the fever(ideas gathered from author-Amy flurry)

spring cleaning time is here and the following tips give you direction that expedites the process, so you can spend the maximum time outside enjoy-ing Arizona’s fabulous spring weather.

• It’s best to begin indoor cleaning projects operating high to low. dust ceiling fans and the tops of window treatment first, saving the floors (where dust can settle) for last.

• Clean dry to wet - removing hair and debris from floors by sweeping, before liquid disinfecting.

• Use the least-abrasive cleaning products possible, graduating to more powerful products as needed.

• Save the dirtiest surfaces for last so rags and sponges won’t spread germs onto clean surfaces.

seemingly big projects, made easy:

• Freshen window treatments - cloth treatments can be removed and dry cleaned or vacuumed with an extension brush. try dusting blinds by wearing cotton loves with furniture polish.

• Rotate/flip mattresses.

• Scour stove top.

• Empty fridge and freezer, discarding all items you’re not going to use and putting back only the items that you plan to utilize. clear out pantry and kitchen cabinets using the same method.

• Change out your closet and pack away winter articles. Donate any winter items that you didn’t use in the past year.

• Clean carpets, editing rooms for donations.

• Bathroom shower curtain liners can be cleaned in washing machine with a little added bleach. remove gunk from shower door tracks by wrapping a spare toothbrush with fine steel wool and wedging it back and forth.

• Replace batteries and filters.

ten reasons to buy a home in 2011submitted by Amy Vasquez, estrella resident and Arizona best realtor

1) You can get a great deal. prices are down 30-60% from just a few years ago.

2) mortgages are cheap. mortgage rates are down by almost a fifth from just two years ago.

3) You can save on taxes. when you add up the deductions for mortgage interest and others, the cost of owning can drop below renting for a comparable place.

4) it’ll be yours. the one benefit to owning that never changes is that you can paint your walls orange if you want (generally speaking; there might be some community restrictions). how many landlords will let you do that?

5) You can get a better home.

6) it offers some inflation protection. historically, appreciation over time outpaces inflation.

7) it’s risk capital. if the economy picks up, you stand to benefit from that, even if you’re goal is just to have a nice place to live.

8) it’s forced savings. A part of your payment each month goes to equity.

9) there is a lot to choose from. there are some 4 million homes available today, about a year’s supply. now’s the time to find something you like and get it.

10) sooner or later the market will clear. the u.s. is expected to grow by another 100 million people in 40 years. they have to live somewhere. demand will eventually outpace supply.

spring break– XtreMe stylesubmitted by handyman Xtreme, estrella residents

spring break often brings to mind thoughts of escaping with the fam-ily to a beach or a skiing destination. however, if you’re part of the growing group considering something closer to home so your spring break doesn’t ‘break’ your bank account, now’s the perfect time to transform your back-yard into your own personal oasis (while enjoying an oasis bagel, perhaps…mmmm). here at handyman Xtreme, we have assisted many estrella residents in creating this very effect by adding ceiling fans, misters and accent lighting on and around the patio, or take it a little further by installing outdoor tV screens, sound sys-tems and built-in grilling stations and fire pits. Another idea for squeezing the most out of homes is to install a security door (on the back, front or both) to let the jasmine-fra-granced air in while keeping pests out. long after the beach bums and snow bunnies have gone and the only ones remembering their vacations are the credit card companies, you will continue to enjoy your ‘break’ day after day.

white Vinegar: used full strength it dissolves dirt, soap scum and hard water deposits. when mixed, 1 cup vinegar to 1 cup water in a spray bottle, it’s excellent on smooth surfaces in the kitchen (countertops, lightly soiled range surfaces and backsplash areas) and bathrooms (counters, floors and exterior toilet surfaces), and can be used to clean hardwood flooring.

baking soda: Acts as a mild abrasive action and natural deodor-izer and can be made into a paste with water to remove deposits in sinks, as well as scour vanities. for tough grime, allow “paste” to set for 10-20 minutes before rinsing. slow drains? pour ½ to ¾ cup of baking soda into drain and dribble hot water just enough to wash down solution slightly. let stand for 2 hours and then flush with hot water.

bY AndY rAgone, resident of estrellA, dAd And pAstor of “ insideout” Youth fellowship

Last year, our family had a get together at my aunt and uncle’s home in California. We loved the seaside atmosphere and scenery of Balboa Island, as it makes for a fun blend between the overtly opulent and the rustic surfer-types who simply refuse to give up the beach life. It’s a great island to walk around, especially when there is time to meander among some of the great little hangouts along the way.

In the garage, there was a two-person kayak with two life jackets hanging at its side. Once I got the hang of it, the Kayak easily wheeled over to the tiny beach that lined an inlet about 100 yards away from the home. Only a few close calls of running the canoe into a couple of parked Mercedes and we were there. It was Maddi and Daddy time, and we were both looking forward to spending time together.

We ventured out into the larger harbor, and after having a couple of near run-ins with a yacht with the christening of “Terrible” on the stern, we turned back towards safer waters. Arriving back to an inlet, Maddi asked for the only oar so she could paddle and steer the dinghy. Making the boat go wasn’t an issue, keeping the boat straight and not running into things was another. Admittedly, I was hesitant for three reasons: One, what happens to the oar if she drops it and says, “oops, sorry daddy”? Does it even float? How would we get back? Two, there were larger boats traffick-ing in and out of the inlet going much faster than us. I wasn’t sure they

Micromanagement of Parenting

would even see us before mauling us into the inlet’s depths. Would Maddi obliviously steer us into their paths? Three, there were also boats worth way more than our family home parked in the middle and along the sides of the inlet, making for two one-way ‘streets’. What kind of bill would I get should Maddi run into one of these museums on water?

On the flip side, does my reluctance keep Maddi from growing into a more responsible person? If I continue to do the work and ‘guide the ship,’ doesn’t that communicate to Maddi that I don’t trust her with her decision making? Furthermore, how do I grow to trust her judgment when I don’t give her opportunities to make choices? After all, she’s 11, and she really wanted to do this.

Stay-tuned next month as I continue to explore the spectrum of parent-ing styles that run the range from overly protective to uninvolved, from con-trolling to indifferent. Where do you see yourself on the scale?

Overly Protective (controlling) Parenting <––> Uninvolved (indifferent) Parenting

Each child is unique, and so must be the way we parent them. It can be a case by case basis at any given time, depending on the needs of the child and the moment. If we’re not careful, we can easily slip into one of these camps, and so will go the balance of parenting and preparing our kids for life.

business spotlight

Back in 1999, two friends decided that working together was better than working for someone else. As real estate agents, they both shared the same set of values and the same plan for producing results. Sarah (Savage) Crippa talked Jennifer Walker into combining those efforts and together they opened the doors of SW & Associates (Savage-Walker) in Avondale, Arizona. Today, SW & Associates is a full-service real estate company made up of a growing team of fourteen professionals. Sarah took the position of Broker and heads the network-ing team, while Jennifer focuses on short-sales. Both have chosen areas that they enjoy and in which they feel particularly successful.

Jennifer Walker grew up in Michigan and met her husband, Brad, while visiting family in Arizona as a teen. The two have been married for twenty-one years and are proud to call Estrella their home. Together Jennifer and Brad have three children. Their oldest daughter graduated from Estrella Foothills High School last spring and they have two sons who attend Estrella Mountain Elementary School. You may have seen the Walker family out at an occasional movie night near the lake, or talked with Brad as he and the boys utilize the gym at the Starpointe Residents Club. Because of her roots in this community, Jennifer specializes in representing both buyers and sellers throughout Estrella. She added that her business is almost 100 percent referrals from friends right

here in our neighborhoods and that she has had a 98 percent success rate with short sales in the recent past. Jennifer credits this success with her willingness to work closely with the banks; something not everyone enjoys. “Anyone thinking about the short-sale option should pre-pare to provide timely paperwork required by banks in this process,” says Jennifer. A client’s willingness to prepare for six months of ‘waiting it out,’ while providing information in a timely manner, can play a large part in the success of a short-sale.

To stay current with updates on the current market, Jennifer attends seminars and courses regularly. She also hosts a networking group, enabling her to meet with other agents monthly. She enjoys the encouragement and enlightenment that the agents bring to the table at

each meeting. She realizes that having the right agent makes a difference in your buying or selling experience. Jennifer and her team are committed to the needs of their clients. Jennifer is experienced as a local homeowner and provides school and neighborhood information. Most importantly, the team and SW & Associates combines personal time spent with customers with advanced technology including resources via email. If you have an interest in buying or selling your home in the near future, take a peek at SW & Associates website at www.savagewalker.com or contact your neighbor, Jennifer Walker, at [email protected]. The office is open daily from 8:30am-5pm.

Prospects will spend a full day with a sales associate including lunch at the Golf Club. So far, the interest list is growing and already two vacation ‘homes’ are ready for occupancy with two more under construction.

We’re just a few weeks away from the grand opening of CantaMia’s Village Center! The 29,000 sq. ft. facility will feature a gorgeous outdoor resort-styled swimming pool, matched with a sparkling indoor pool/spa. Three Estrella schools – Estrella Foothills High School, Estrella Mountain Elementary and Westar Elementary – and Rainbow Valley Elementary in Buckeye have each received a $10,000 donation from The Safeway Foundation. The donations are a direct result of funds raised last fall at The Safeway at Estrella Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Safeway Foundation. The rest of the proceeds from the golf benefit went towards breast cancer awareness programs. Because of its focus on healthy lifestyles for its employees, Safeway has asked the schools to use part of the proceeds for physical fitness and nutrition programs.

“The schools are thrilled with the donations, and we’re happy to play a part in getting money to them,” said Jan Martin, Real Estate Director,

Phoenix Division for Safeway Inc. “When we first informed the principals of the schools of our donation intentions, they all presumed that their share would be $2,500 apiece. When they learned that it was really $10,000 each, they were ecstatic. Safeway hopes that these donations will make a meaningful impact for the schools and in the students’ lives.”

Newland Communities, of which Estrella is part, was a sponsor of The Safeway at Estrella Golf Tournament. Along with the Safeway Foundation, other key sponsors included Kitchell Development, General Mills, Frito Lay, Mission Foods and De Rito Partners. Estrella has also supported Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the West Valley Arts Council and the City of Goodyear’s programs such as the annual Toy Drive.
