MICHAEL WIESEA NEW TIME IS EMERGING. If you look around, all the old paradigms are crumbling — economies, politics, education, relationships among couples, families, and countries. And while everything appears to be in decay, there is also new growth and a new cre-ativity which is more apparent every day. I was quite fortunate to have Bucky Fuller as a dear friend and mentor. He saw that even though humanity is in its “final exam” and that it is “five minutes to midnight,” he was also optimistic because he saw that there is nothing in the universe that human beings cannot experience. Chew on that for a moment. We have underrated what we humans are capable of. I want to make films and publish books that celebrate this creativity, this transformation, and our experience in

the universe. I invite you to join us.

Onward and upward, Michael Wiese

SCREENWRITING/WRITINGNEW TITLES

THE HOLLYWOOD STANDARD – 2ND EDITIONTHE COMPLETE AND AUTHORITATIVE GUIDE TO SCRIPT FORMAT AND STYLE

CHRISTOPHER RILEY

This is the book screenwriter Antwone Fisher (Tales from the Script) insists his writing students at UCLA read. This book convinced John August (Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) to stop dis-pensing formatting advice on his popular writing website. His new advice: Consult The Hollywood Standard. The book working and aspiring writers keep beside their keyboards and rely on every day. Written by a professional screenwriter whose day job was run-ning the vaunted script shop at Warner Bros., this book is used at USC’s School of Cinema, UCLA, and the acclaimed Act One Writing Program in Hollywood, and in screenwriting programs around the world. It is the definitive guide to script format.

The Hollywood Standard describes in clear, vivid prose and hundreds of examples how to format ev-ery element of a screenplay or television script. A reference for everyone who writes for the screen, from the novice to the veteran, this is the dictionary of script format, with instructions for formatting everything from the simplest master scene heading to the most complex and challenging musical underwater dream sequence. This new edition includes a quick start guide, plus new chapters on avoiding a dozen deadly formatting mistakes, clarifying the difference between a spec script and production script, and mastering the vital art of proofreading. For the first time, readers will find instructions for formatting instant messages, text messages, email exchanges and caller ID.

“Aspiring writers sometimes wonder why people don’t want to read their scripts. Sometimes it’s not their story. Sometimes the format distracts. To write a screenplay, you need to learn the science. And this is the best, simplest, easiest-to-read book to teach you that science. It’s the one I recommend to my students at UCLA.” — Antwone Fisher, from the foreword

CHRISTOPHER RILEY is a professional screenwriter working in Hollywood with his wife and writ-ing partner, Kathleen Riley. Together they wrote the 1999 theatrical feature After the Truth, a multiple-award-winning German language courtroom thriller. Since then, the husband-wife team has written scripts ranging from legal and political thrillers to action-romances for Touchstone Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Mandalay Television Pictures and Sean Connery’s Fountainbridge Films.

In addition to writing, the Rileys train aspiring screenwriters for work in Hollywood and have taught in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., New York, and Paris. From 2005 to 2008, the author directed the acclaimed Act One Writing Program in Hollywood.

REFLECTIONS OF THE SHADOWCREATING MEMORABLE HEROES AND VILLAINS FOR FILM AND TV

JEFFREY HIRSCHBERG

Reflections of the Shadow explores motivations behind cinematic heroism and villainy (Why do heroes and villains do what they do?) and the commonalities amongst heroes and villains who have stood the test of time – using examples from contemporary films.

If you are a new or experienced screenwriter, producer, director, or studio executive, you will be riveted by the analysis of how memorable heroes and villains are created. Reflections of the Shadow is different from others in its class, because it is the per-fect companion to many of the successful screenwriting books currently in the marketplace. Many of these books focus on story, structure, or “writing the screenplay that sells” – far fewer help writers create unforgettable heroes and villains (which will help you get your work noticed). Charac-ter drives plot. Without strong characters in conflict there is no drama and a weakened plot.

“Hirschberg’s been there and done that. That’s why this original contribution to the screenwriter’s craft is not only a “how to” and a “how not to,” but also a treasury of authentic and revealing insights into the construction of many of the cinema’s most memorable characters. Hirschberg clearly loves these characters and delights in searching for the secret that has brought them to life.”

— David Feldshuh, artistic director, Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts, Cornell University; author, Miss Evers’ Boys (Pulitzer Prize nomination; winner of five Emmys for HBO)

JEFFREY HIRSCHBERG is an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the prestigious Television and Film Arts Program at Buffalo State College. He has been a professional screenwriter for eighteen years and has written sixteen feature length screenplays and numerous television scripts.

A member of the Writers Guild of America and judge for the WGA Awards, Jeffrey has had screenplays optioned by Hollywood production companies and has written and/or created shows for Showtime Networks, Lifetime Television, and ABC. He has worked at NBC, Warner Bros., and Viacom and has taught at Cornell University, Syracuse University’s Newhouse School, and R.I.T.’s School of Film and Animation.

In addition to his writing and professorial duties, Jeffrey is an active screenplay consultant via his ThreeAct script consulting service (ThreeAct.com).

BUSINESS PLANNING

GETTING THE MONEYA STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE FOR WRITING BUSINESS PLANS FOR FILM

JEREMY JUUSO

The only step-by-step guide on the market for how to write a film business plan. Tailored to artists unfamiliar with financial con-cepts, but detailed enough for those versed in high finance. Sure to become a staple in every filmmaker’s toolkit.

Filmmakers interested in financing their own films have to start with a business plan. Few know how to put one together. Getting the Money gives a relaxed, step-by-step approach on how to do so. Of particular use are the financial sections where, for the first time, readers are guided on exactly what to do and exactly how to do it, using examples from sample plans. No more vague

instructions that amount to hiring someone else. Once finished with the book, readers will have their own plan they can use to attract financing for their films.

“For the new filmmaker, you should consider this to be the definitive handbook to getting your movie financed. If you follow Jeremy’s guidance, by the time you’re finished, you will understand your movie from every financial angle necessary and your investors will love you for it. Then onward to the creative process.” — Matthew Rhodes, executive producer, An Unfinished Life, starring Robert Redford and

Morgan Freeman; producer, Passengers, starring Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway

“An amazing reference for anyone even thinking about writing business plans for films. Clear, concise, understandable — and a great overview of the nuts and bolts behind how an indie film makes money.” — Arie Posin, director, The Chumscrubber, starring Carrie-Anne Moss, Rita Wilson, and

Oscar nominees Glenn Close and Ralph Fiennes

JEREMY JUUSO graduated cum laude in economics from Harvard College. Upon graduation he accepted a Harvard fellowship and taught economics at a British boarding school to students applying to Oxford and Cambridge. Since England, he has worked at MGM’s treasury and investor relations departments, the financial markets research firm Bigdough.com (now part of Ipreo Hold-ings), and the production company Fly High Films, where he currently serves as financial advisor and writes business plans for the company. Jeremy is also the founder of Jeremy Juuso Consulting, a firm specializing in the writing of film business proposals and educating investors on the basics of the movie business (www.jeremyjuuso.com).

FILM EDITINGGREAT CUTS EVERY FILMMAKER AND MOVIE LOVER MUST KNOW

GAEL CHANDLER

Film Editing: Great Cuts Every Filmmaker and Movie Lover Must Know makes the invis-ible art of editing visible by using nearly 600 frames from popular, recent films. The frames, accompanied by brisk descriptions, make it perfectly suited for quick study readers who like to ‘gaze’ rather than ‘graze’ and don’t want to read a book. Written by an editor and the author of Cut by Cut: How to Edit your Film or Video, it shows how editors can make or break a movie.

This one-of-a-kind book is your ‘must have’ cheat sheet to learning to make great cuts. Great for filmmakers, students or anyone who wants to see how the editor makes us believe. YouTubers, prepare yourselves to add juice to your creations.

“Those of us in the movie business often say that if we notice something, that means we didn’t do a good job. Our job as filmmakers, is to do what we do as seamlessly as possible. Gael Chandler takes a microscope to those seams to show the subtleties and techniques used by seasoned professionals, using words and pictures that an average movie-goer or up-and-coming filmmaker can appreciate and experiment with. This dissection, together with quotes of working directors and editors, make Film Editing a practical and aesthetic addition to any film buff, film student, or filmmaker’s arsenal. “

— Victoria Rose Sampson, writer, director, film and sound editor; MPSE Award for Best Sound Editing: Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Speed, Romancing the Stone, The River; Grand prize winner for writing and directing, Harley-Davidson commercial contest short film, Her Need for Speed

“A comprehensive and easy-to-read description of the techniques editors use to seamlessly tell stories. The use of film frames clearly illustrates the editing concepts. A must read for any film student, or anyone just interested in the art of editing.”

— Nancy Morrison, A.C.E., editor, Desperate Housewives, Starter Wife, Malcolm in the Middle

GAEL CHANDLER has edited comedies, dramas, documentaries, features, corporate videos, and promos and cut on every type of medium: film, tape, and digital. Nominated twice for a Cable ACE award for editing a comedy series, she is a member of the Editors Peer Group of the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences and annually judges the Emmy and College TV awards.

SCREENWRITING/WRITING

HORROR SCREENWRITINGTHE NATURE OF FEAR

DEVIN WATSON

Learn why horror works and how to write a solid horror screenplay well grounded in the tricks of the grave.

Before Jigsaw, there was Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. Be-fore those two were slicing and dicing up teenagers, there was Michael Myers and Leatherface. And long before that, there was Dracula, the Wolfman, Doctor Frankenstein and his monster. And so on and so forth.

Horror has, among all of the genres in film and written works, one of the longest, most distinguished, and often misunderstood bloodlines in history. It is often overlooked by critics who don’t see anything more than blood and guts on the screen, or a col-

lection of cheap scares. But what is missed is the hard-hitting commentary on society and life contained in those works.

And the screenwriter or filmmaker, too, may overlook this powerful (and profitable) genre when it just might be what they’re looking for.

“Devin Watson’s Horror Screenwriting: The Nature of Fear is unequivocally the greatest book about writing horror that exists… Devin covers everything: the history of horror, the etiology of fear, horror genres, styles… From there he goes on to talk about pacing, avoiding talking heads, keeping the ‘stakes’ up (particularly valuable if you’re writing about vampires), how to get the most out of dialogue in horror, and all of the other basic ghouls (sorry) of the trade.

This is just a great book whether or not your genre is horror. It’s someone speaking — not preach-ing — from experience about how to write a truly dramatic, original, commercial screenplay which, last time I checked, screenwriting is supposed to be about.”

— Jeffrey M. Freedman, screenwriter, Vivaldi, Bad Numberswww.jeffreymfreedman.com/vivaldi.htm

DEVIN WATSON has been a fan of horror from the ripe old age of eight. He studied thousands of horror films before diving in to write and produce his own works. His latest movie, The Cursed, was recently released. He is also the producer and director of the upcoming Sunnyland, a supernatural horror film.

MANDALAS OF BALIOUR PLACE IN THE WORLD

LIMITED SPECIAL EDITION

DEWA NYOMAN BATUANINTRODUCTION BY LAWRENCE BLAIR (RING OF FIRE)

This powerful book is filled with images encapsulating physical and spiritual worlds of the most extraordinary island culture in the world.

The spiritual and cultural beliefs of Bali are encapsulated in extraordinary mandalas – hypnotic focal points for drawing the observer deeply into himself, to a perspective from which the multiplicity of nature, and our place in it, reveal themselves.

“With the influx of foreign visitors to Bali in the 1980s, Batuan remained one of the few artists to resist the temptation of pandering to the tourist trade. Instead, he continued painting mandalas. For those with eyes to see, they actually encapsulated the beliefs of the island, and were in them-selves — as are all true mandalas — hypnotic focal points for drawing the observer deeply inward, to a perspective from which the multiplicity of nature, and our place in it, reveal themselves.

Batuan is now a doting and contagiously happy grandfather, full of tales and fables for all who find him in his village home and studio where, while talking, he continues to produce a seemingly endless symphony of mandalas, like a storm of multicolored snowflakes. And in each of them, with a little time, can be seen the harmonious integrity by which the Balinese, both as individuals and as a culture, have flourished for over a thousand years.”

— From the Introduction by Lawrence Blair (author/filmmaker, Ring of Fire )

“Mandalas are the inspiration for integrated paintings where religion, art, and culture meet; works that flow into the invention of a personal style that has turned Dewa Nyoman Batuan into an artist who has discovered his identity.

— Pande Wayan Suteja Neka, Founder of Neka Art Museum, Ubud, Bali

DEWA NYOMAN BATUAN, internationally known artist, whose work has been collected by both Queen Elizabeth and Ronald Reagan, continues to produce a seemingly endless symphony of mandalas.

TALK THE TALKA DIALOGUE WORKSHOP FOR SCRIPTWRITERS

PENNY PENNISTON

If your dialogue is authentic, truthful and identifiable, your script will stand out from the crowd. Great dialogue attracts great actors. It grabs the attention of eminent directors. It impresses smart producers. It enthralls an audience. This book gives screenwrit-ers and playwrights an easy-to-use training manual for improving dialogue writing skills. By mastering this fundamental building block of dramatic writing, authors breathe life into characters and create scripts that will get noticed.

Dialogue puts conversation in motion. Great dialogue moves like a great athlete; it is nimble, precise, and powerful. It commands the attention, yet feels effortless in its execution. However, if you

want your dialogue to move like an athlete, then you must train like an athlete.

Most playwriting and screenwriting books take a sweeping scope. They tend to include a brief discussion of dialogue, but then abandon the topic to discuss other issues. Talk the Talk is a focused examination of an exercise regimen exclusively for dialogue writing. With twenty simple lessons, plus writing exercises for every level, Talk the Talk gives scriptwriters a complete tool kit for mastering the art of dialogue writing. By putting these lessons to work, authors create scripts that crackle with life and jump off the page.

“Talk the Talk is packed with all sorts of tools to help the characters breathe, stand up, and come alive.” — Shawn Lawrence Otto, screenwriter and co-producer,

House of Sand and Fog

“This is the book dramatic writers have been looking for! Teachers and students alike will find its sound advice and step-by-step approach invaluable and inspiring.” — Rebecca Gilman, playwright and screenwriter;

author, Spinning into Butter and Boy Gets Girl

“Its discussion of status — its effect on dialogue, and how it shifts in various contexts — was particularly illuminating. “ — Wendy MacLeod, playwright and screenwriter;

author, The House of Yes, Schoolgirl Figure, and Juvenilia

PENNY PENNISTON is a Chicago area playwright and screenwriter. Penny’s newest play, Spin will have its world premiere with Chicago’s Theater Wit during the 2009-2010 season.

BALI BROTHERSGREAT UNPRODUCED FILM SCRIPTS™

LACY WALTZMAN, MICHAEL WIESE, MATTHEW BISHOP

Bali Brothers is the first of an entirely new series of books de-signed specifically to support the independent filmmaking com-munity. Independent films offer an originality of voice and spirit not found in Hollywood films. There are thousands of screenwrit-ers and filmmakers trying desperately to get their scripts read by financiers, producers, and the powers that be that will lead them to the big screen. GREAT UNPRODUCED FILM SCRIPTS™ provides a new highly visible introduction to an entire new generation of screenwriters.

Two brothers reconcile their differences through the beauty and magic of Bali.

Nick Best is living the good life on a beach in Bali — thousands of miles from the expectations laid on him by his billionaire father — when his brother Eddie shows up to bring him home. But Eddie and Nick are soon seduced by Bali, and by Shakti, a beautiful apprentice to a mysterious shaman. As Eddie becomes obsessed with ritual magic, Nick must try to save his brother from madness, and save Bali from the cataclysmic disaster revealed in Eddie’s dark visions. In doing so, Nick finds the courage to accept real love, find his place in the world, and fulfil his destiny.

“Bali Brothers is magnificent. A powerful, compelling story in a magical setting. Brilliantly written and conceived, with many unforgettable characters. Thoroughly entertaining. An important film.” — James Bonnet, author, Stealing Fire from the Gods

“Bali Brothers is everything a story aspires to. It transports us to places — both geographically and emotionally — that help us reconnect with the deep emotions and spiritual truths we often forget or have long-ago forgotten.” — Jeff Schechter, author, My Story Can Beat Up Your Story

LACY WALTZMAN was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, and has since been employed in Los Angeles doing publicity, casting, cable TV production, and motion picture development.

Both fiction and nonfiction writers will discover a set of useful myth-inspired storytelling paradigms (i.e., “The Hero’s Journey”) and step-by-step guidelines to plot and character development. Based on the work of Joseph Campbell, The Writer’s Journey is a must for all writers interested in further developing their craft.

The updated and revised third edition provides new insights and observations from Vogler’s ongoing work on mythology’s influence on stories, movies, and man himself.

“This book is like having the smartest person in the story meeting come home with you and whisper what to do in your ear as you write a screenplay. Insight for insight, step for step, Chris Vogler takes us through the process of connecting theme to story and making a script come alive.” — Lynda Obst, producer, Sleepless in Seattle, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days;

Author, Hello, He Lied

“This is a book about the stories we write, and perhaps more importantly, the stories we live. It is the most influential work I have yet encountered on the art, nature, and the very purpose of storytelling.” — Bruce Joel Rubin, screenwriter, Stuart Little 2, Deep Impact,

Ghost, Jacob’s Ladder

MASTER SHOTS100 ADVANCED CAMERA TECHNIQUES TO GET AN EXPENSIVE LOOK ON YOUR LOW-BUDGET MOVIE

CHRISTOPHER KENWORTHY

BEST SELLER

Master Shots gives filmmakers the techniques they need to execute complex, original shots on any budget. By using powerful master shots and well-exe-cuted moves, directors can develop a strong style and stand out from the crowd. Master Shots gives you so many powerful techniques that you’ll be able to respond, even under pressure, and create knock-out shots. Even when the clock is ticking and the light is fading, the techniques in this book can rescue your film, and make every shot look like it cost a fortune.

Each technique is illustrated with samples from great feature films and computer-generated diagrams for absolute clarity.

Use the secrets of the master directors to give your film the look and feel of a multi-million-dollar movie. The set-ups, moves and methods of the greats are there for the taking, whatever your budget.

“Master Shots gives every filmmaker out there the blow-by-blow setup required to pull off even the most difficult of setups found from indies to the big Hollywood blockbusters. It’s like getting all of the magi-cian’s tricks in one book.” — Devin Watson, producer, The Cursed

“Christopher Kenworthy’s book gives you a basic, no holds barred, no shot forgotten look at how films are made from the camera point of view. For anyone with a desire to understand how film is constructed — this book is for you.” — Matthew Terry, screenwriter/director, columnist

DIRECTING ACTORS CREATING MEMORABLE PERFORMANCES FOR FILM AND TELEVISION

JUDITH WESTON

BEST SELLERDirecting film or television is a high-stakes occupation. It captures your full attention at every moment, calling on you to commit every resource and stretch yourself to the limit. It’s the white-water rafting of entertainment jobs. But for many directors, the excitement they feel about a new project tightens into anxiety when it comes to working with actors.

This book provides a method for establishing creative, collaborative relation-ships with actors, getting the most out of rehearsals, troubleshooting poor performances, giving briefer directions, and much more. It addresses what actors want from a director, what directors do wrong, and constructively analyzes the director-actor relationship.

THE FILM DIRECTOR’S INTUITIONSCRIPT ANALYSIS AND REHEARSAL TECHNIQUES

JUDITH WESTON

BEST SELLERThe craft of directing is well known to include shot composition and under-standing of the technology. But directors need to know how to prepare so that their ideas achieve a level of intuitive truth. This means deep script analysis, until the characters’ inner lives and private joys and problems are human and idiosyncratic, and as real to the director as his own. And it means reading the actors’ impulses and feelings — including those that the actors themselves may not know they have.

A filmmaker’s most precious assets — not just for directing actors, but for all the storytelling decisions — are his instincts, imagination, and intuition. Judith Weston gives away the secrets that can keep an imagination alive and free a director’s intuition, so everyone on the set can function at full creativity.

JUDITH WESTON was a professional actor for 20 years and has taught Acting for Directors for over a decade throughout the U. S. and Europe. She is the author of Directing Actors.
