Tune. The Boatman’s Dance.

These songs would have been part of the Black and White Minstrel shows that were very popular in America and would have made their way back to Ireland in the 19th century.

There is a version of the boatman’s dance in Kerr’s Second Collection, Kerr has this under the heading, Negro Sand Jigs Plantation Dances and Walk Rounds. Both versions sound like negro plantation dance tunes. There are also versions of the tune in the Levy Collection.
