ROCK

Page 3: Music Genre Research

Rock came from people reacting to the obviousness of pop, the commercial and common music played continuously. The genre literally gave and alternative to pop and other forms of rock.

Alternative Rock, or just Alternative, is a sub-genre of rock. It is mainly a band based genre consisting of Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Drums and sometimes Keyboard. The genre can vary from upbeat rhythms to chilled and emotional pieces. Since its start in the 1980‘s the genre has grew over the years and has been kept alive through modern bands such as Kasabian and Vampire Weekend.

The genre popular music originated in its modern form in the 1950s,

deriving from rock and roll. The term "pop song" is first recorded as being used in 1926

Instruments used. The instruments used to produce pop music are guitar, bass, piano, drums, amplifiers, cymbals, electric organs, electric pianos, electric keyboard and

polyphonic tape playback keyboard.

Guitars are common in pop music. Types of guitars used in this type of music include bass guitars, acoustic guitars and electric guitars.

Drums in pop music can be played by a drummer on a drum kit or they can be produced electronically by a computer. Computer drums have a more

digital sound that can feel robotic and less natural than drums played by a person.

Vocals are the leading force of pop music. Music is often structured to fit around the lyrics written by the vocalist. Types of vocals can include singing,

screaming, rapping or spoken word.

Wind instruments such as saxophones, trumpets and flutes help give pop music a realistic and full sound.

Orchestra string instruments such as the violin, viola and cello are occasionally featured

in pop music.

Punk Rock Punk rock typically means a fast, hard-edged style of music,

often with lyrics with anti-establishment sentiments. A good example of this would be the song ‘God Save the Queen’ .Various genres of rock use Punk to describe themselves. In fact, the dating of the first use is still dubious.

Introduction to Heavy Metal

. Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the

late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the Midlands of the United Kingdom and in the

United States.

The bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly

amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy

metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo.

Origins of Heavy Metal

In January 1968 Blue Cheer released a cover of Eddie Cochran's classic "Summertime Blues", from their debut

album Vincebus Eruptum, that many consider the first true heavy metal recording.

The same month, Steppenwolf released its self-titled debut album, including "Born to Be Wild", which refers to "heavy

metal thunder" in describing a motorcycle.

Black metal • death metal • doom metal • glam metal • gothic metal • groove metal • power metal

• speed metal • stoner metal • thrash metal • traditional heavy metal

A number of heavy metal genres have developed since the emergence of heavy metal (often

shortened to metal) during the late 1960s and early 1970s. At times heavy metal genres may overlap or are difficult to distinguish, but they can be identified by a number of traits. They may differ in terms of:

instrumentation, tempo, song structure, vocal style, lyrics, guitar playing style, drumming style, and so

on.

Motörhead, founded in 1975, was the first important band to straddle the punk/metal divide.

With the explosion of punk in 1977, others followed. British music papers such as the NME and Sounds

took notice, with Sounds writer Geoff Barton christening the movement the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal".[110] NWOBHM bands including Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Def Leppard reenergized the

heavy metal genre.
