History of House Music

1. House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago in the early 1980s. House music was created in and by the African American community. The early artists from this genre include Frankie Knuckles, who opened the warehouse (Chicago Club) and he mixed old disco classics and new euro beat pop.

2. House music evolves in Chicago and New York from African-American musical traditions like gospel, soul, jazz and funk as well as Latin salsa.

1980s

It developed in the U.S. out of the need of oppressed people, African Americans, gays and Latinos, to build a community through dance , and later in the UK, they build an alternative community of music and dance via Acid House.

House music in the U.S. was associated with black people, with gay clubs, basically with things that white America would not even acknowledge.

House music had its origins in gospel, soul and funk rather than in commercial disco music. Furthermore, Chicago jazz, blues and soul had an immense influence on the creation of House music.

1990s

The UK and its trend-hungry music press had become the local point of the dance music world.

Everyone outside Belgium hated new beat, a sort of sluggish cross between acid, techno and heavy industrial Euro music

They have discovered garage. 'Garage' as a term had already long been in use on the house scene to differentiate the smooth, soulful songs flowing from New York and New Jersey from the more energetic, uplifting deep house out of Chicago.

Acid house scene had grown into the rave scene which was becoming so big that promoters came up with the idea of putting on huge events in the countryside outside London

21st Century – House Music

A new generation of DJs and promoters, including James Zabiela, Miguel Migs and Mylo, were emerging, determined to kickstart a more underground scene and there were signs of a renaissance in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, New York and other racially-mixed cities, as well as in Australia, Canada, Scandinavia, Scotland and Germany.

2010s saw multiple new sounds in house music developed by numerous DJs. Sweden knew a prominence of snare-less "Swedishprogressive house" with the emergence of Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell, Steve Angello (These three formed a trio called Swedish House Mafia), Avicii, Alesso, etc.

The growing popularity of such artists led to the emergence of electro house and progressive house sounds (big room house) in popular music, such as singles Lady Gaga's "Marry the Night", The Black Eyed Peas' "The Best One Yet (The Boy)" and the will.i.am and Britney Spears "Scream & Shout".
