1.1 This report provides evaluation ~€sults per ASTH E84 (798) Standard on a c04ting material manufact~red by Miraco, lnc. and designated as HlRACOTE.

] lishing product performance per the 1979 Standard. The tE~t~ referenced in this ~eport are 85 recorded in the F.M. Report OABQ4.AC.

1.4 The tests were conducted in accordance ~ith the Standard Method ofJ Test for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials, ASTM Designa­tion E~84. The results yield flame spread aqd ~oKe density v~lueg for the tested material during a 10 minute fire exposure.

I 1.5 The purpose of the cest is to determine the comparative surfac~ burn­

ing characteristics of building materials by evaluating the flam~ spr~ad p2r­

J fo~ance of red oak under identical conditions. The smoke density of the mateTial may be compared wi~h that of ~spesto~-cement and red Qak which have been a~bitr~rily established as 0 and 100 respectively.

2.3 The material was brush applied to 1/4 inch C6.35 ~) thick asbestos cement board at a nominal thickness of .075 inch (l.~ ~).

III TES'!" MEtHOD

3.1 The furnace, constructed to ASTM E-84 (15) 5pecific~tions. Wa3 pre~

heated fo~ a 10 minute pBriod with the asbestos-cemept board and th~ ~~mov8ble

top in place. During this time, the exposure flame and draft conditions ~er~

adjusted to meet the ASTM £~84 requirementS of 5,000 btu (5.3 MJ/min.) produc­ing a 4-1/2 ft. (1.37 m) flame length Yith an air v~lo¢it1of 240 + 5 ft/min.) (73.2 + 1.5 m/min.).

3.2 Under: these cQnditlons ..nth red oak flooring having. a moisture con~

tent of 6 to 8%, the flame sp~ead~ 19-1/2 ft. (5.94 m) frum the end of the igniting flame in 5 min. 30 ~~C. + 15 g~C.

3.3 The £~rna~~ was allowed to cool until the brick tempe~ature was lOS + 50f (40.5 + 2.S0C) as measu~~d by a thermocouple ~bedded 1/8 ~n.

(3.175 mm) below-the surface of the furna~e floor a~ a point 13 ft. (3.96 m)

from the burners.

3.5 During the test, the advancement of the flame front was noted ViSu­ally th't""ough the vie1.!ing por::slocated on the side of the furnac:t:. Smoke emission ~as continuously monito~ed by a photo~lectric circuit mo~nted verti~

cally ucross a hori 4 oncal section of the flue pipe.

3.6 The ~bove test procedure was followed for the th~ee tests.

IV FLAME SPREAD DETERMINATION

4.1 The fla~e spread distances versus ti~e are plotted to establish a '.-". curve for ~he J:ll'lt~rial tested. Ihe total (At) under the flame-, spread time

distance curve is determined while ignoring any flame: front recession. The flame spread distance is the observed di9tance minus ehe:4-1/Z ft. (1.37 m) due to the ignition fire.

4.2 The Flame Spread Index (lSI) shall be determined ~s follows;

4.2.1 If this tocal area (At) is less than or equal to 97.5 ft-min., the Flame Spread Index shall be 0.515 times the total area (FSC ; 0.515 At).

4.2.2 If the total area (At) is greater than 97.5 ft-min., the Flame Spread Index ~hal1 be 4900, divided by the difference of 195 minus the total 3Te& (At), (FSC a 4900/(195-At )).

Eagle. pennsylvania to determine that the quality a.nd unifom­i~y oiche product has been maintained and will provide the same level of per­formance as originally tested.

9.2 A re-examin~tion may b~ required to asSure any changes in the compo­sition or specified properties of the product. The current Factory Mutual Specification Tested Building Materials publication shall be consulted.

5.1 The smoke developed by the material during the test is indicate& by the output of photoelectric circuit mounted vertically across a horizontal section of the flue pipe.
