And Happy New Year! According to our calendar and our culture this is a time of new beginnings. The New Year is a delineation mark when we put a stop to things we want to cease and/or take up new practices. Many call these “New Years’ Resolutions”. I have been listening to the voices within our congregation who have resolved to “lose weight”, “eat better”, “be nicer to other people” to name a few. Please join me in praying for our brothers and sisters in Christ at Morris Chapel that they may fulfill their resolutions. Our Committed to Christ emphasis this fall was a time when we pledged increased faithfulness in prayer, worship, Bible reading, service, financial giving, and faith sharing. It too was a time of new beginnings. On one of the commitment cards during the Bible reading week, a person asked the question “How do I read the Bible?” A great question! Thank you for asking. The request for help was about an approach to reading the good book as well as assistance in comprehension and application. I will address these requests in a couple of articles. To tackle the daunting task of reading the Bible, we need a plan. One tool would be to read the assignments from our Upper Room devotional guides that we provide. There is a Bible reading for each day in addition to the theme verse. Another plan would be the reading plans we handed out during the Committed to Christ emphasis. Some Bibles even have a reading plan as one of its resources. Additionally, there are lists/books that give you a Bible verse for “when you feel [a certain feeling or emotion]”. These are all great plans. Since my devotion time with God had gotten a little stale recently, I began to look for a new plan for my personal Bible reading (not connected with my sermon preparation). At the invitation of some of our United Methodist bishops and theologians, I have begun reading a chapter a day from the New Testament. Beginning with Matthew chapter 1 on New Years’ Day I will read through Revelation chapter 22, and then begin again with Matthew 1. This plan will take us through the entire New Testament with a second reading of the Gospels in one year. I invite you to join us on this journey. (I understand you are receiving this a week or so after the first of the year, but it will not take you long to catch up.) For this new year I have taken on something new. I hope you have too. However, remember that we do not have to wait for a date on our calendar to begin a new holy practice or stop a sinful action. God allows us to come to him anytime for strength, for confession, for repentance, for forgiveness, for grace, and for anything else we need. In Christ, Pastor Dan Lyons

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

Praise the Lord! And Happy New Year! According to our calendar and our culture this is a time of new beginnings. The New Year is a delineation mark when we

put a stop to things we want to cease and/or take up new practices. Many call these “New Years’ Resolutions”. I have been listening to the voices within our congregation

who have resolved to “lose weight”, “eat better”, “be nicer to other people” to name a

few. Please join me in praying for our brothers and sisters in Christ at Morris Chapel

that they may fulfill their resolutions.

Our Committed to Christ emphasis this fall was a time when we pledged

increased faithfulness in prayer, worship, Bible reading, service, financial giving, and faith sharing. It too was a time of new beginnings. On one of the commitment cards

during the Bible reading week, a person asked the question “How do I read the Bible?”

A great question! Thank you for asking. The request for help was about an approach to reading the good book as well as assistance in comprehension and application. I will

address these requests in a couple of articles.

To tackle the daunting task of reading the Bible, we need a plan. One tool would be to read the assignments from our Upper Room devotional guides that we

provide. There is a Bible reading for each day in addition to the theme verse. Another plan would be the reading plans we handed out during the Committed to Christ

emphasis. Some Bibles even have a reading plan as one of its resources. Additionally,

there are lists/books that give you a Bible verse for “when you feel [a certain feeling or

emotion]”. These are all great plans.

Since my devotion time with God had gotten a little stale recently, I began to

look for a new plan for my personal Bible reading (not connected with my sermon preparation). At the invitation of some of our United Methodist bishops and

theologians, I have begun reading a chapter a day from the New Testament. Beginning

with Matthew chapter 1 on New Years’ Day I will read through Revelation chapter 22, and then begin again with Matthew 1. This plan will take us through the entire New

Testament with a second reading of the Gospels in one year. I invite you to join us on this journey. (I understand you are receiving this a week or so after the first of the year,

but it will not take you long to catch up.)

For this new year I have taken on something new. I hope you have too.

However, remember that we do not have to wait for a date on our calendar to begin a new holy practice or stop a sinful action. God allows us to come to him anytime – for

strength, for confession, for repentance, for forgiveness, for grace, and for anything else

we need.

In Christ,

Pastor Dan Lyons

“MISSIONS SNUGGLE”

The Children’s Council along with our Mission Committee is partnering with Love’s

Chapel UMC mission program called “Missions Snuggle.” This is an opportunity that

will take place all year long where we will be collecting new and gently-used stuffed

animals to be delivered to Fire and Police Departments and the Red Cross

for these agencies to have on hand to give to children who are in crisis.

This is an awesome outreach opportunity for the entire Morris Chapel

community to participate in together. Bins will be located around the

church for your donations. If you have any questions, please speak with

Samantha Wesley.

“PRAYER ENCOUNTER SEMINAR” WITH REV.TERRY TEYKL

AN EVENT TO BLEND WORSHIP, TEACHING, MINISTRY, PRAYER AND

FELLOWSHIP

Our vision is to see Jesus magnified and to see the Church build bridges between

denominations, promote racial healing and seek to love the hurting and the

disenfranchised. We believe that when prayer and evangelism are reunited that the Church

will emerge as a powerful force for reclaiming the land and setting the captives free.

PRAYER ENCOUNTER SEMINAR

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD - “THANK YOU”

Thank you so much to the members of Morris Chapel UMC, and the

surrounding community, for their support of the Operation Christmas

Child Relay Center in 2012. The total number of shoeboxes donated

rose this year to 829, with over 300 boxes coming from with Morris

Chapel! Your support of this mission and your generous donations

made many children around the world very happy...happy to not only

receive gifts such as crayons and socks, but to also have a chance to hear the word and

receive the love of Jesus Christ our Lord. What present could be better than this! Also, a

special thanks to the many volunteers, your time and effort was greatly appreciated and I

look forward to working with you all again in the future. Thank you!
