PASTOR’S MESSAGE: From the Mouth of Lyons
Praise the Lord! “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be
thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2nd Timothy 3.16-17). God’s word, the Bible, is a gift to us to show us his will, ways, and love. However, none of this happens
without us reading, reflecting upon, or embodying the Scriptures.
In my last article I began to answer the question, “How do I read the Bible?” in
which I encouraged the use of a planned approach to Bible reading. The second part of this question has to do with comprehension and application. Life transformation from
reading God’s printed word is the real purpose of God’s gift to us.
We can think of God’s word as a seed that can be planted in our mind, heart, and soul. For a seed to bust out of the hull, take root, grow up, and produce fruit it
needs to be nurtured in the soil with warmth, minerals, and moisture. The same is true for God’s word planted in us. Once God’s word is planted in us, it too needs to be
nurtured to take root and produce fruit. Therefore, simply reading the printed words of
the Bible will not lead to comprehension and application. The planted word of God is nurtured by prayer and meditation (the intentional thinking about and mulling over the
meaning of Scriptures).
An additional spiritual discipline to accompany our Bible reading is the practice of journaling. Many people find it helpful to write out their thoughts (meditations). Not
only is it helpful to write it out, but that record can be reviewed to continue nurturing
growth of the seed that was initially planted. Nothing fancy is necessary as a plain
spiral-bound composition book will do.
A useful acronym for Bible reading and journaling is “SOWN”. The “S”
stands for Scripture. After reading a Bible passage, select a word, phrase, verse(s), or theme that spoke to you and write it at the beginning of your journal entry. “O” stands
for Observations. This is the section in which you write out your thoughts. This can be as detailed as you make it. It is about what you see in the passage and the connection
you make. This is the section that improves our comprehension and understanding.
Lastly, “WN” stands for What Now? In this section develop an action plan based on your reading and observations. What is the passage calling you to do or believe? This
application section leads to the life transformation and the “fruit” of the “seed” that was
planted.
The Bible is a wonderful gift God provides for our lives. Like all tools, it only
becomes useful if employed in the work of our lives. Lord, teach us to read your word
and see the things you have for us there. Amen.
With Christ’s love,
Pastor Dan Lyons

Cemetery Fund Donation A donation to the Morris Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund was made by
Ruth Lankford Ingram in Memory of and in Honor of
Thomas Ruffin Barrow (1865-1952) and his family.
Tom Barrow was first married to Alice Fulp and they had two children, Emma (in
1892) and Calvin (in 1894). Their son died at five months of age and Alice passed away
soon after. Tom then married Lillie Martin in 1896 and they produced seven boys and
six girls. Lillie died in 1919 and Tom later married Carrie Pool.
Although Tom lived in challenging times and experienced much heartbreak during his
lifetime, he maintained a deep faith, strong character, and devotion to his family, leaving
a lasting example for his descendants.
In Memory of:
~ Emma E. Barrow Dwiggins (husband Willie H. Dwiggins, & child, Edna Mae Walker)

Monday & Tuesday, February 11th (set up) & 12th beginning at 8am
Monday & Tuesday, February 18th (set up) & 19th beginning at 8am

volunteer your time, or would like to place an order, please call Lucille Ashburn at 595-2235. Orders may also be placed using the Order Sheet on the bulletin board right outside
the Sanctuary.
The Evangelism Committee is looking for volunteers to drop off a gift to visitors on Sunday afternoons, letting them know we are happy to have them join us in worship, and
also to answer any questions they may have about Morris Chapel. It should take an hour or less working in teams of two, and we hope to have enough volunteers to rotate the
schedule so that you would only be serving every other month. We will have a training
session to prepare the teams for this ministry. If you are able to serve or have questions, please contact Sharon Burnette (306-2450) or Denise Shepherd (595-1664). Thank you!

“MISSIONS SNUGGLE” The Children’s Council along with our Mission Committee is partnering with Love’s
Chapel UMC mission program called “Missions Snuggle.” We will be collecting new
and gently-used stuffed animals to be delivered to Fire and Police
Departments and the Red Cross for these agencies to have on hand to
give to children who are in crisis. This is an awesome outreach
opportunity for the entire Morris Chapel community to participate in
together. Bins will be located around the church for your donations. If
you have any questions, please speak with Samantha Wesley.
Saturday, February 9th: Attention Parents of Morris Chapel Children...we will be delivering comfort blankets to some of our Heritage Members and will be leaving the
church at 10am on the church bus. We welcome all children (if your child is younger than Kindergarten we need at least one adult to attend with them.) We will stop and have
lunch afterward and will be back at the church around 1pm. If you have any questions,
please speak with Sarah Hutchings or Samantha Wesley.
Friday, February 15th: Mark your calendars for “Kids Night Out” from 6-10pm in the
Fellowship Hall.
Saturday, February 16th: The Morris Chapel Youth will be leaving at 2:45pm for their
annual trip to “Winter Jam” in Greensboro. The cost is $30 per person for advance
tickets. Please sign up at http://www.timetosignup.com/morrischapel. If you have any
questions, please talk to Lori Cook.

PRAYER ENCOUNTER SEMINAR
“PRAYER ENCOUNTER SEMINAR” WITH REV.TERRY TEYKL
AN EVENT TO BLEND WORSHIP, TEACHING, MINISTRY, PRAYER AND
FELLOWSHIP
Our vision is to see Jesus magnified and to see the Church build bridges between denominations,
promote racial healing and seek to love the hurting and the disenfranchised. We believe that when
prayer and evangelism are reunited that the Church will emerge as a powerful force for reclaiming
the land and setting the captives free.
