I reside opposite to Aanjali apart-ments in Jeswant Nagar, Reddipalayam Road. The garbage bags are not col-lected regularly. Also the person who sweeps the roads just dumps the rubbish in some spot. Every few feet this can be

seen. They should be given baskets to clear it. In one or two hours all the gar-bage is strewn all over as stray dogs pull them apart and the street is dirty again. Many a time I have complained to 1913. But that is a one-day solution. The day of the complaint, action is taken. There-after it is back in square one.

Hope the authorities concerned look into this matter and find a solution.

Access to the Post Office Road in Ambattur Indus-trial Estate was cut off from one end as the road at the end of Second Street – which branches off from near the Ambattur Indus-trial Estate Golden Jubilee Pillar - was dug up recently. Mound of earth placed at the dug up spot prevented heavy vehicles, cars and auto rickshaws from enter-ing the Post Office Road, while two-wheeler riders managed to drive through a small space on an uneven surface.

The Post Office Road, which has industrial units lined up on either sides, is the key link road between the busy Second Main Road and Second Street of the Ambattur Industrial Estate.

When Mogappair Mail visited the Post Office Road recently it found that heavy vehicles were parked on the street as they could not proceed towards the Second Street.

"Being an industrial es-tate, it is inevitable for lor-ries and containers to ply here on a daily basis except on holidays. Usually when lorries enter the Post Office Road with consignment, the same is unloaded at the industrial units here and then the vehicles head out of the industrial estate through the Second Street. However, with the road dug up the vehicles couldn't proceed on the Second Street," said a worker at a lathe unit in Ambattur In-dustrial Estate.

Likewise, some lorry consignments come into the industrial estate via

Second Street and then head to the Post Office Road. But they were forced to take a circuitous route as the entrance to the Post Office Road was dug up.

“Considering that the Post Office Road is not as wide as the First Main Road and Second Main Road, taking a U-Turn within the road is not easy. So we prefer to drive through Second Street or take a turn from there. We had to struggle to move our vehicles after unloading consignments for a few days as the road was dug up. We were forced to re-verse the vehicle for a few metres and then turn on our return journey. It was quite difficult considering that this so many vehicles come here," said Pandu, a lorry driver.

Ambattur Bus Depot under RenovationBy n rathi Chithra

The Metropolitan Transport Corpora-tion’s (MTC) bus

depot in Ambattur Indus-trial Estate is under renova-tion for the past few weeks. Consequently commuters have been put to some short term inconvenience. The crew of the MTC bus are also operating their vehicles with some diffi-culty. However, in the long run the renovation will make the depot more crew and commuter friendly, according to officials of the MTC bus depot at Ambat-tur Industrial Estate.

The concrete surface at the bus depot, which is among the busiest depots of the MTC, had worn out due to the plying of hun-dreds of buses on a daily basis. Consequently, com-muters and crew members

of the buses had earlier complained that using the surface was becoming dif-ficult as it had potholes in many places. Following this, the authorities of the MTC had decided to initi-ate works to renovate the depot, paying specific at-tention to relaying the sur-face at the Ambattur Indus-trial Estate Depot.

“Work on laying a smooth concrete surface at the depot started a few weeks ago and is now on-going. We hope to com-plete them soon enough so

that the entire depot is back to its original operational capacity,” an official at the depot, who did not wish to be quoted said.

When Mogappair Mail visited the depot in the third week of February, a part of the depot had been barricaded and was out of bounds for commuters and bus crew as workers had levelled the surface with fresh cement. The buses were being operated on the remaining bays available in the Ambattur Industrial Estate depot.

“The depot is used by thousands of commuters. These include inbound and outbound commuters. The inbound commuters are the one who come into the Ambattur Industrial Estate from different places to work in the various facto-ries and establishments located in one of the largest industrial estates in Asia. The outbound passengers include those living in the vicinity. Buses are operated to different destinations in south, central and north Chennai from here,” point-ed out a crew member of a bus, who too requested anonymity. “If the work is completed early, it will help us. Right now some of us are forced to stand outside the depot due to the ongo-ing works,” said Dhaya Hariharan, a worker in a garment factory in the in-dustrial estate.

Mrs Revathi Rangarajan has been in exclusive designer boutique business for over two decades and runs the SHE boutique in Mogap-pair. She participated in the International Paegeant event in New delhi recently and was crowned Mrs South India, despite tough competition. The event was organised to spread awareness of breast cancer.
