Letter From the President

Dear FPA LI Members, Sponsors, and Guests,

Welcome to our 18th Annual FPA LI Symposium! We are very excited to have you here and participating in our many

workshops and presentations!

I’m pleased to report that in spite of one of the most challenging years for our chapter and with the backdrop of implementations of DOL regulations, we have survived and grew as advisors and as a chapter! The success of our experience can only be credited to our great team, the sage advice of Chairman Paul Schifter, our Program Director Larry Sangirardi, Cliff Walsh our recently appointed Co-Chair of Programs, Scott Sanders our Treasurer, Michelle Blair, our Chapter Secretary, Stephen Conroy, our Director of Membership, Mark Badami, our Director of Symposium, Daniel Mazzola, our Director of Pro Bono, John Baldi, our Director of Fee Advisor Group, and Bryan Trugman, Our Director of Social Media and Director of our brand new committee NexGen. Their efforts were strengthened by our new Chapter Executive Patricia Cimpric who gave us great ideas and helped point us in new directions, along with our “temporary” administrator Jenna Hudson who learned all about the running of the chapter in short order.

As you can see the success of our chapter depends on the involvement of its members. The only thing missing is you! To prompt you along, I will be personally sending you a note in the near future to ask for your support. In the meantime, feel free to approach any of our team to get involved!

Sincerely,

Craig J. Ferrantino

Letter from the Symposium Chair, Mark A. Badami, CFP®

Welcome to the FPA of Long Island’s 18th Annual Symposium! Our excellent line-up of speakers, topics, and exhibitors are sure to make you and your practice “Be Unstoppable” in the coming months.

This year’s committee worked extremely hard to make today’s symposium the most dynamic to date. To accomplish this, our

committee met more times for this year’s event than any other time in our history, which translated to meetings every two weeks! We worked

with countless volunteers and sponsors to handpick speakers and topics that we feel will enhance your financial planning development. We also continued

with the vision of last year’s symposium chair, Craig Ferrantino, to enhance the exhibitors to include vendors which will not only help you educate your clients, but grow your business.

We listened to your feedback from last year’s symposium. This included hosting a Post Symposium Breakfast where attendees’ input resulted in us changing our symposium date and focused our attention on getting speakers to present topics that many of you requested. For the first time, we have FIVE General Sessions for you to attend in addition to numerous breakouts. All the topics for this year’s symposium were chosen because of your evaluation sheets. Be sure to complete this year’s evaluation sheet to have an input into next year’s symposium. As you see, we read them, we act upon them and positive changes are made because of them.

By attending this symposium alone, you are eligible for up to eight(possibly more) CFP and/or CPA credits and up to four NYS Life Insurance credits. It is the committee’s hope that you will leave us with a refreshed perspective, enlightened view, new opportunities for your practice, and an enhanced perspective of your FPA chapter.

In addition to thanking our Platinum Sponsors, Jackson National Life, Sandwire, and Associated HCM at this year’s symposium, we will be introducing something new. We are recognizing a local, homegrown broker dealer for their commitment to the community, American Portfolios Financial Services (AP). Under the helm of Lon T. Dolber. AP has developed a strong belief that any success they have had over the years is attributed to staying true to their core values one of which, is to being a good corporate citizen. That is why Mr. Dolber is a big supporter of giving back to the community and is actively involved in an organization called Virtual Enterprises. To follow along with Mr. Dolber’s commitment, the FPA of Long Island will be donating a portion of our ticket sales to Virtual Enterprises. Leadership by example.

We would also like to introduce Alden Mills as our featured keynote speaker. Mr. Mills developed his strategy for success while becoming a national rowing champion, a Navy SEAL Platoon Commander, and the creator of the Perfect Pushup (one of Inc. Magazines 500 fastest growing consumer products in 2009). His appearances include the Today Show, the Donny Deutsch Show, CBS Morning Show and now the 18th Annual FPA of Long Island Symposium. He is the author of: “Be Unstoppable, The 8 Essential Actions to Succeed at Anything”. His motivational presentation is not to be missed!

Lastly, I would like to take a moment to extend my gratitude to the Symposium Committee, the volunteers, our generous sponsors and our new Chapter Executive, Trisha Cimpric. All of their dedication and efforts helped to make this year’s symposium possible and I truly appreciate all of their hard work.

They are 60 years of age and 58 years of age, respectively. They have three (3) children, two of whom are married and between them have six (6) grandchildren. Their estate planning objectives include passing assets to their children during and after their lifetimes with (not surprisingly) the least estate and gift tax cost possible. Their assets total approximately $25 million, and include a vacation home (which Bob and Janet hope will stay in the family long after they are deceased); and a handful of limited liability companies each of which own income producing commercial real estate; securities, bank accounts and life insurance.

Our panel presentation will be an interactive discussion among tax and estate planning professionals focusing on the following estate planning strategies: The operation of an intentionally defective grantor trust and the tax consequences thereof; the pros and cons of a private annuity vs. a self-cancelling installment note and the tax consequences thereof; the use of a QPRT vs. the use of a sale/gift to an intentionally defective grantor trust; and the operation and use of a second to die life insurance trust which will own and be the beneficiary of a second to die life insurance policy.

Reverse for Purchase- Why Downsizing and Not Paying All Cash for Your Next Home May Make Perfect Financial Sense!Provided By: InterContinental Capital GroupSpeaker: Robert Tollin

Robert Tollin a graduate of Touro College, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees; he has been a loan officer since 2001 and has been specializing in reverse mortgages since 2007. Prior to working at ICG, Robert was a leading reverse mortgage consultant with Wells Fargo and operated his own branch at iReverse Home Loans. Over the past decade Robert has established himself amongst his peers and other trusted professionals to be an expert and person of trust; when it comes to the education of the reverse program. Robert has been a member and or sponsor of the FPA for the past decade and has been determined in educating the financial planning community on not only the pros and cons of reverse mortgages; but the different ways the program can be utilized. Robert had just celebrated his 10 year wedding anniversary and has two daughters ages 9 and 4 that keep him busy while not at work.

Topic Description: Reverse Mortgage for Purchase makes it more affordable for your clients age 62 and older to purchase a home that better fits their life, without having to take on monthly mortgage payments. (Of course, they’ll still be responsible for paying property taxes and required homeowners’ insurance). This may help them more comfortably afford and upgrade or downsize by spending less money out of pocket.

Many older homeowners who wish to move and/or downsize, often decide not to for the below reasons. Knowledge of the reverse for purchase financing can help act as a solution. 1. Seniors do not move as they don’t think they can obtain financing. 2. Seniors do not seek a financing option because they do not want to

have the encumbrance of a monthly mortgage payment.

3. Seniors do not downsize, as they think they need all the cash from their sale to support the new purchase and/or they will be not left enough money after the purchase to make it appealing.

Who Moved my (LTC) Cheese?Provided By: NY Long Term Care Brokers, LtdSpeaker: Robert M. Vandy

Robert M. Vandy, CLU, ChFC, LUTCF, CLTC is Vice President of Market-ing for NYLTCB. Bob has over 26 years of experience in insurance and financial services, having served in both field and home office marketing support and management capacities. Bob speaks regularly to insurance agent and financial advisor and planner groups, broker-dealers, attorney and accountants, and has been a guest lecturer at Albany (N.Y.) Law School. Topic Description: The Long Term Care (LTC) and Long Term Care Insur-ance (LTCI) planning worlds have seen a great deal of change in recent years. Not only are public programs been stretched thin, but the private LTCI industry has seen its share of challenges as well.

Many of the recent changes in the LTCI industry have left some in the insurance and planning community to wonder about the future of private insurance in solving client and prospect needs. While some commonly held industry conclusions may be valid, many are based on incomplete or biased information.

In this session, we will examine some of that information, and attempt to dispel some of the myths surrounding LTCI today. We will review some of the reasons why we’ve seen the changes we have, where we may be headed as an industry and discuss some suggested “New Planning Solu-tions for the ‘New Normal’.”

Through a brief case study approach, we will examine the importance of private insurance in planning for LTC needs, some lesser known policy design factors – with both standalone LTCI and combination policies – which many agents and advisors may not have considered, to highlight some potentially advantageous designs for ongoing client needs.
