Lifetime Impact Award:
ELAINE SANDERSONElaine Sanderson has been making an impact on the Milwaukee Jewish community since she was a teenager. Born in Milwaukee, she grew up as part of the only Jewish family in Wauwatosa.
Elaine loves to learn and to teach. With each new career move, she returned to school to learn more and prepare for her students. Elaine earned a degree in Child Welfare from the University of Wisconsin. When her children were young, she started teaching at Congregation Shalom where she continued for many, many years. When Hillel Academy hired her as a librarian, she went back to school to study Library Science. When she started the Creativity Center for MAJE (a precursor of CJL), she began studying Hebrew.
Elaine was the driving force behind the forward thinking Teacher Creativity Center. She was the pied piper leading Jewish educators in creating units with relevant substance as well as attractive elements to involve young minds. She professionalized the library at Hillel and as well was the caretaker for the resources of the Board of Jewish Education which is the core of the collection at the JCC today.
Elaine taught at Congregation Sinai. She presented at national CAJE conferences. Elaine developed the Mastery Hebrew Class at Congregation Shalom which allowed children to move as fast as they desired in their learning. Students stayed with Elaine for 4 full years of Hebrew School because she so enriched their learning.
So many of us in Milwaukee are the teachers we are because of Elaine. Elaine’s influence impacts our students every day and will continues to be a presence in the years to come.
Jewish Educator of the Year Award:
MISHY PITTLEMANFor thirty years “Morah Mishy” has had a profound impact on the lives of her students. Working with the youngest students, she becomes a friend, mother-away-from-home and teacher for every student. At Hillel Academy, Morah Mishy is an enthusiastic participant in professional development and teaches collaboratively with all staff. She has a deep appreciation of the fact that for some students, Kindergarten and First Grade might not only be their initial foray into education but also their first connection with Judaism. She awakens the spark in each of them to connect with who they are as individuals and as Jews and to be proud of their place in the world around them.
Always focused on collaboration, Mishy has created many of her learning materials from scratch. Stemming from a desire for materials that are creative, artistic, and spark the interest of students, Mishy has been an innovative tour de force as she has shaped lessons, and built on new innovations in curriculum. Morah Mishy Pittleman is truly an example of excellence in education and for her thirty year effort and achievement in providing a solid foundation for her young learners.
Jewish Educator of the Year Award:
SUSIE ROSENGARTENSusie Rosengarten is a teacher at Milwaukee Jewish Day School (17 years), Congregation Shalom (24 years), and is the Director of Judaic Programming at Steve and Shari Sadek Family Camp Interlaken JCC. Susie is a master teacher; she loves Jewish tradition and transmits her passion for learning to her students. Susie also lives her ideals every day. Susie is a lifelong learner and she demonstrates that to her students.
Susie teaches every day except Shabbat, she spends her summers at camp and she is always volunteering for Jewish organizations or arranging observances for groups of people (a huge second night Seder for instance). Susie takes every opportunity to learn that is available.
Susie is a team player. She collaborates with other teachers, helping anyone who asks. She is creative, enthusiastic, and always willing to try something new. Her students remember her long after leaving the school or camp and are eager to come back to visit her.
Lifschutz Mitzvah Award
JODY LANSINGJody Lansing and her third grade class at MJDS won the Lifshutz Mitzvah Award for The Katy's Kloset Project. This was inspired by a story about children helping others. When a classmate shared about having once borrowed a wheelchair through Katy's Kloset, it inspired the students to contribute to the organization so that other children may benefit from there as well. Katy's Kloset is an organization that lends medical equipment to people in need of help due to illness or injury.
The students were informed that the greatest need at the time was money to purchase a wheelchair where someone could elevate one or both legs.
The chair cost $600. The class created their goal of $1800 (using the significance of the number 18) so that they could purchase 3 wheelchairs.
Throughout this project students learned many new skills. Creativity and collaboration were keys to success with this project. The most notable outcome to this project was the $2000 donation our students made to Katy's Kloset at the end of the school year. More important was the impact this project had on our students. The students gained empathy and an awareness of the community around them. The students felt the importance of tzedakah and felt an immense amount of pride for their good deeds.
Gill Incentive for Teachers (GIFT) AwardGILAH SALTZMAN, AHUVA JARCAIG, KAREN TOREM,
MIRIAM LIFF, RABBI HERSH HILLERThe teachers from Yeshiva Elementary School won the GIFT Award for a new school wide Middos program entitled: אשרינו מה טוב חלקנו which means “how happy we are, how good is our lot.” This program focuses on six different middos throughout the year. Through stories and sayings from Chazal, activities and prizes, we try to instill a greater awareness of these middos in our students. The six middos covered are:
1) Speaking Nicely לשון טוב2) Belief in HaShem אמונה 3) Expressing Gratitude הכרת הטוב 4) Respecting Creation כבוד הבריות5) Being Happy with Our Lot שמח בחלקו6) Showing Respect and Love for Torah תורה
The six main topics are divided into weekly concepts and lessons. Every week the teacher focuses on one Biblical quote and follows up with a lesson and story that was sent home. Students were able to earn checks on the Middah MasterCard by sharing the story or lesson at home. There is also a reinforcement activity that could be performed at home and earn them another check. School excitement and culture can be felt by the teachers and administration. Additionally, the topics focused on areas of weakness and steady improvement has been documented.
Gill Incentive for Teachers (GIFT) AwardBatya Landes
(on behalf of all Hillel Academy Teachers)The Hillel Academy Torah Fair was an opportunity to deepen students learning, expand on classroom activities in their Judaic studies, and add a tangible, hands-on opportunity for parents to see the interactive learning their students were doing throughout their studies. Students and teachers sought creative opportunities to express principles, stories and history from Torah in innovative ways. The projects varied from a "cooking show", to trying their hand at making paper and Hebrew lettering, dramatic displays, presentations using SMART technology, and artistic representations of Torah scenes.
The project took several months and was based around the curriculum taught within our Judaic studies classes. This was an extension of classroom learning.
Hillel Academy's Torah Fair was a school-wide project. The Fair showcased the work of Kindergarten through eighth grade, reflecting literacy, design and technology skills that built off the Judaic and Hebrew curriculum. This community-wide event covered holiday customs and meals, the process of parchment, Kabbalistic explanations behind the study of sacred texts, Biblical scenes and the deeper meanings behind commandments and Judaic Law.
