Dear Friends: A couple just left my office. They had made an appointment to let me know that because of financial problems exacerbated by the current economy, it would be necessary for them to resign their Temple membership and withdraw their children from our school. Of course, I said to them, “We won’t hear of it, you and your children will remain at whatever dues you feel you can afford, including a full schol- arship if necessary, until you get back on your feet. I’ll discuss the matter with our President and it will, I promise, work out for you.” Such a discussion is, of course, not rare in our community today. There are many, many among us – single parents, older people, young newly married, those without jobs, those about to lose their homes – whose ability to sup- port our congregation financially is quite limited. Our policy has been and remains, to turn no one away. Despite the depth of our own financial situation, it must always be that way. Why is this so important? Because we live in a difficult time – for adults as well as children – and here I’m not speak- ing of the financial challenges we all face. The basic moral values of integrity and decency are under siege. Even the strong- est among us needs reinforcement in our efforts to live ethically. But this is especially true for our children who are inheriting a world in which they grow up with the perception that anything goes. In addition, the future of the Jewish people in Israel, in Europe and even here in America will depend on a new generation of young people, for whom Auschwitz is but a histori- cal term, who can be taught to understand what it means to be a Jew and to care deeply about that Jewish identity. Thus the synagogue must be open and available to all if Jewish history is to have a meaning which shall endure. As Cynthia Ozick once wrote, the cause for which the Maccabees waged their battle in their time, as we must in ours, is to “stand for mercy, conscience freedom, dedication, thanksgiving. Call it civilization.” That is why we are asking for your help – the help of those who are fortunate enough to give more so that Temple Beth Torah can fulfill the spiritual needs of many, many people of every age group who are forced by circumstances to give less – and to and prepare a generation of leaders for the years ahead. We just cannot do it alone any longer. If you believe in the future of this synagogue – if you believe in the future of the Jewish people – this New Year will give you ample opportu- nity to prove both with your open hearts and your open wallets so that no one – no one – need ever be turned away from our doors. It’s as simple as that. I hope that each of you who is able will be among those who are willing to ensure tomorrow’s hope with gifts of dedication and substance today. Yours sincerely, Stephen H. Dear Friends:

A couple just left my office. They had made an appointment to let me know that because of financial problems exacerbated by the current economy, it would be necessary for them to resign their Temple membership and withdraw their children from our school. Of course, I said to them, “We won’t hear of it, you and your children will remain at whatever dues you feel you can afford, including a full schol-arship if necessary, until you get back on your feet. I’ll discuss the matter with our President and it will, I promise, work out for you.” Such a discussion is, of course, not rare in our community today. There are many, many among us –

single parents, older people, young newly married, those without jobs, those about to lose their homes – whose ability to sup-port our congregation financially is quite limited. Our policy has been and remains, to turn no one away. Despite the depth of our own financial situation, it must always be that way.

Why is this so important? Because we live in a difficult time – for adults as well as children – and here I’m not speak-

ing of the financial challenges we all face. The basic moral values of integrity and decency are under siege. Even the strong-est among us needs reinforcement in our efforts to live ethically. But this is especially true for our children who are inheriting a world in which they grow up with the perception that anything goes. In addition, the future of the Jewish people in Israel, in Europe and even here in America will depend on a new generation of young people, for whom Auschwitz is but a histori-cal term, who can be taught to understand what it means to be a Jew and to care deeply about that Jewish identity.

Thus the synagogue must be open and available to all if Jewish history is to have a meaning which shall endure. As

Cynthia Ozick once wrote, the cause for which the Maccabees waged their battle in their time, as we must in ours, is to “stand for mercy, conscience freedom, dedication, thanksgiving. Call it civilization.”

That is why we are asking for your help – the help of those who are fortunate enough to give more so that Temple

Beth Torah can fulfill the spiritual needs of many, many people of every age group who are forced by circumstances to give less – and to and prepare a generation of leaders for the years ahead. We just cannot do it alone any longer. If you believe in the future of this synagogue – if you believe in the future of the Jewish people – this New Year will give you ample opportu-nity to prove both with your open hearts and your open wallets so that no one – no one – need ever be turned away from our doors. It’s as simple as that.

I hope that each of you who is able will be among those who are willing to ensure tomorrow’s hope with gifts of

dedication and substance today. Yours sincerely,

January 2010: From the President

I usually become pensive, then reflective at the close of the secular year, just prior to the be-ginning of the New Year. No matter how old I have become, no matter what changes have occurred in my part of this world, I feel the same way. Back in March of 2009, I opted to run for the position of Temple President. By June 1, 2009 I had become the President. By June 2, I asked myself “Why”? Now I know! It has only taken one quarter of my term to arrive at an answer! I did this because of my love of Judaism, my love of meeting people and working with peo-ple in many different capacities. Then, there’s my joy of interfacing with young people from preschool through whenever. I combine this with the myriad of challenging decisions I have to make blended with the variety of activities in which I engage. Next, there is the act of running a meeting, dealing with potentially disquieting issues and the need to maintain my composure under fire. I have always had a love of learning. In my current position, I have learned that Budget is not a four letter word, but a very useful tool. I have learned that it is foolish to try to please everyone at all times and a challenge to remain calm when others are losing their calm. I have learned that there are many ways to serve the greater numbers by actions and deeds and not empty words. I have also learned to ask questions, to seek information openly rather than pretend I know it all. And who has suffered through my private insecurities? Of course, my husband and my close friends. I generally go through these pensive and reflective periods twice a year: during the High Holidays and during the secular New Year time. This year, I was in a totally other world planning for the High Holidays and learning the ropes so to speak about being your leader. Looking back a few months, I am grateful for the exceptional team with whom I worked to insure a most beautiful and spiritual Holiday season in early autumn. Here I am in the middle of the second reflective state. Now it is time to use my skills to make every person connected with our congregation experience personal satisfaction, per-sonal pride and feel a sense of belonging during this unsettling time of economic stress and turmoil. In closing, I am a deeply spiritual woman. I find comfort attending and participating in our beautiful services. I derive strength from the good people with whom I am surrounded. Now, I pray that all of us who are part of this congregation enter an era where we know peace, terminate hunger and live tikkun olam in its fullest sense. Louise S. Marks, President

Save the Dates!

Worship with the Temple Beth Torah Band Friday, February 19th

Purim Spiel and Carnival Sunday, February 28th

Rock Shabbat, Shabbat Shirah, Shabbat Hallelu: call it whatever you want, but it’s the newest, hottest craze among North American congregations. Temple bands are sprouting up all over the place, bringing in Jews by the thousands for thrilling worship experiences for people of all ages. You may remember me putting out a request about a year ago for musi-cians interested in forming a Temple Beth Torah Band. Well, I am happy to announce that the time is here! After a full year of rehearsal, our very own, and very talented, congregational band is gearing up for a debut performance. On Friday, February 19, plan to be at TBT ready to sing, dance, shout for joy, or just be amazed and inspired. Melo-dies you know and love will be infused with a new energy. Piano, guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, trumpet, clarinet and voices join together bringing us to spiritual heights we have only dreamed about. This is not a Shabbat you want to miss. I must acknowledge in advance our hard-working musicians: Eric Bakerman, Kerry Cook, Jeff Demby, Jeff Engel, Dov Fahrer, Amy Fisher, Jamie Fisher, and Mitch Marcus. What devotion! Then, only nine days later, come out again for our annual Purim celebration: Megillah reading, Purim Spiel, and Carnival. As I compose this message to you, Louise Marks and I are preparing to launch into the writing of this year’s play. Stay posted for details on the theme and rehearsal dates. The play is open to children and adults. The more the merrier! (I daresay re-hearsals are even more fun than the actual performance!) If you are interested in performing this year, please send me an email at [email protected]. It was such a pleasure to see so many people at Chanukah enjoying singing with and learning from Dan Nichols. He inspired us by showing how we have it within ourselves to celebrate life, that music can be our path to praise God. I hope that we can continue on that path together and that you can join us to take part in all of these upcoming musical events

TempleBeth Torah Leonie Arguetty Preschool

We welcome the year 2010 with an action-packed calendar of exciting activities and events in our school and com-munity! We look forward to continuing to extend our preschool program to provide our preschoolers with experiences that meet their individual needs while also affording them the opportunity to challenge and be challenged. Our dedicated staff members are constantly using their creative talents to motivate children by making learning fun.

The highlight of December, of course, was Hannukah and all the excitement associated with the joyous holiday. The

children gathered together in the social hall for Hanukkah candle lighting led by Rabbi Pinsky and Cantor Barry followed by a robust sing-a-long of Hanukkah songs led by the preschool staff. Our hard-working Volunteer Parent Organization Ha-nukkah committee under the guidance of Toby Brodtman provided all the classes with delicious potato latkes (donated by the Sisterhood) topped with applesauce and also some donut holes for an extra special treat. These tasty snacks were certainly a hit with all the classes! All the children also went home with individually wrapped Hanukkah gifts from the VPO. The culmi-nation of the festive week was a special Shabbat/Hanukkah sing-a-long on Friday, December 11 as Dan Nichols fresh off the plane from Raleigh, NC, joined Cantor Barry for a special preschool program featuring Hanukkah and Shabbat songs and stories.

We are proud of our continued partnership with Wellington Community High School and will be welcoming new

interns into our classrooms this month to extend their early childhood educational experience. The older preschool groups are looking forward to an exciting field trip to the high school where they will be treated to a band performance to enhance their unit on musical instruments. Other musical treats for the PreK children include a visit and demonstration from preschool alumni, Kerry Cook on the drums and from Cantor Barry on the guitar.

This month we will also kick off a “mentor” program with our own religious school when the 5th graders begin visit-

ing the children in the “aftercare program” as part of their Jewish studies in learning how to be a mench. The preschoolers love the added energy that the older children bring to our classrooms and we love providing the venue for their experience.

It’s already time to begin planning for next year. Priority registration for the 2010-2011 school year will take place

from Tuesday, January 11th to January 29th. . During this time, registration will be open to all temple members and current and alumni preschool families. Classes are being offered for 2, 3 and 4 year olds. New for next year will be an all day program for two year olds. Registration for new families will begin on Monday, February 1st. Spread the word! Please note: Play & Learn registration, for children ages 15 months to 2 years (our version of Mommy & Me), is ongoing.

Planning for next year does not slow the excitement of our current school year. We close the month of January with a grand preschool Tu B’Shevat celebration. We will dedicate Phase II of the Playground renovation and plant four new trees in our playground on Friday, January 29th. Our VPO (co-chaired this year by Misty Roseff and Amy Rochman) is to be applauded for their untiring efforts to raise funds for the improvement of the playground and for our new classroom equip-ment. The fundraising efforts and contributions of all our parents and benefactors will be enjoyed by the many children who will walk through our hallways in the years to come.

On behalf of the entire staff, I would like to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2010!

Sandy Wilensky Preschool Director

From the Desk of the Temple Educator Jodi Kaufman

Putting Family Education on the Radar Screen Jewish educators are making radical changes to the field. They are reworking traditional curricula, making them more engaging and contemporary. They are incorporating art, music, dance, drama, and storytelling to bring the material alive. But without the family, the task of religious education is so much harder. It comes as no surprise that children look to their parents as they begin to define their level of religious practice and their sense of being Jewish. When parents value their Judaism, children are more likely to find it important. When parents understand and prac-tice their Judaism, children are more likely to practice it as well. The more our homes are permeated by Jewish thinking and doing, the more meaningful and worthwhile Judaism and Jewish learning will be to the child. Recognizing the family’s fundamental role in conveying religious tradition, we are making Family Education a top priority. We know that many parents whose religious educa-tion is incomplete, or who have forgotten what they learned, look over their children’s shoulders to reacquaint themselves with their religious heritage. The goal of Family Education is to help parents learn more about Jewish values and traditions and to en-courage them to actively incorporate these learnings into their lives. Family Education gives them the concrete skills they need to create vibrant Jewish homes and participate more comfortably in the Jewish community. Family Education strives to establish a partnership between home and school. It aims to make Jewish education work to its greatest potential, for the teacher, the child, and the parent. It enables teachers to have a more profound impact on their students. It extends the school day to those hours when parents and children talk together, and it extends the school walls outward to encompass the homes and families of learners. It helps children explore and experience through the home what they learn in school. And it offers parents the opportunity to form a new and more vital relation-ship with their Judaism—one that will restore the family to its right-ful place alongside the school as the transmitter of Jewish heritage, midor ledor, from one generation to the next. Youth News Jessica Starkschall

Happy New Year to all! We hope everyone had a wonderful Hanukkah and holiday season this year. The Youth Commit-tee sent Hanukkah greetings and $10 movie gift cards to 34 of Temple Beth Torah’s young adults to help them welcome in the Hanukkah holiday. Now, all I can say is WOW! I hope you were all as blown away by the Dan Nichols weekend as I was. Thanks to everyone who participated. After the concert, Dan stayed at the Temple to interact with the teens and put on a more intimate musical experience. We were joined by youth group members from around South Florida, including members from our neighbors, Temple Beth Zion in Royal Palm Beach. The teens loved the opportunity to meet new friends. Over the course of the eve-ning we had over 40 teens at the Temple program!!! Congrats on a wonderful event TiBToFTY. Over Winter Break 6 Beth Torah teens participated in the Jewish Federation’s Young Ambassadors program and hosted Israeli teens at their homes. On December 20th, the entire Young Ambassadors program spent the evening with TiBToFTY at the temple for dinner and a chance for our teens to meet the Israelis. Our teens taught the group what being a part of an Ameri-can Jewish youth was like, as well as lead the group in a community service project to benefit the Commission for Jewish Education’s 100 quilts project, and our Temple’s Nothing But Nets Campaign. Directly after Young Ambassadors, 7 of our TiBToFTY teens packed their bags and headed to Winter Regional Convention in Orlando. Youth groupers participated in a talent show, concert, 80’s style Bat Mitzvah party, pool party, and a formal awards banquet during the 5 amazing days and 4 crazy nights of Winter Regionals 2009. There is a lot to look forward to over the next few months. TiBToFTY & Kochavim, mark your calendars for Saturday night, January 16th for an exciting program with GameWars from 8:00-10:00 p.m. at the Temple. Then, put on your walking shoes because Miles for Smiles is just around the corner. Thank you to everyone who has made a contribution to our cam-paign thus far, especially Sarah Franzblau and Muriel and Eugene Holland who have each sponsored 1 child to attend Camp Jenny through their generous donations. It is not too late to donate or sign up to walk. For more information e-mail TiB-ToFTY’s Social Action Vice President, Eliza Schlein at [email protected]. The event will be held on January 31st beginning at 7:45 a.m. Finally, the Youth Committee is hosting a “Man in my Life” Mini Golf event on Sunday, January 24th at 11:30 a.m. at Ad-venture Mini Golf. For more information, contact Mandy Rubenstein at [email protected]. Whether you are a familiar face or an enthusiastic new member, we’d love to see you at our next program. It is never to late to join the youth group, young adult connection, or youth committee. The next youth committee meeting will be held on January 10th at 10:00 a.m. at Temple. We hope to see you there! Jessica Starkschall Alisa Adler& Mandy Rubenstein Youth Director Youth Committee Co-Chairs

“Miles for Smiles” for Camp Jenny A Walk-a-Thon project of the Youth Group of Temple Beth Torah

January 31st, 2010 “Miles for Smiles” for Camp Jenny is a project of our youth group which has become very important to us and to a very spe-cial group of children from Atlanta’s inner city. In the past years Camp Jenny has been partnered with The Study Hall, an after school program that gives children in a badly troubled inner city area of Atlanta called Peoplestown. The Study Hall gives the children ongoing attention and enhanced learning opportunities such as tutoring and field trips. The students who meet the goals of the program are given the opportu-nity to attend Camp Jenny! These children came from White Elementary School, also in Atlanta, GA; these children are hand picked by their teachers and principal to attend Camp Jenny. Camp Jenny, located on the campus of the URJ Camp Coleman in Cleveland, GA, is held annually during Memorial Day weekend. It was named in memory of Jenny Rosenthal following her death in 1987. Camp Jenny is totally funded, directed, and operated by the youth groups of NFTY of the southeast region of the URJ of which our group is a very active member. It has partnered with The Study Hall and now White Elementary to enable qualified inner-city children to have an experi-ence that most of them would never even dream of: a long weekend at a beautiful camp full of people who care and respect them. From the moment the children leave their buses until they depart for home the fun, delight, and love they experience becomes a life-changing experience. Many youth groupers have participated in Miles for Smiles and Camp Jenny and they find it to be a rewarding and spiritually fulfilling experience. Miles for Smiles- our Walk-a-thon project- is a five mile walk held in January for the benefit of Camp Jenny. Walkers ask individuals, families, and companies to sponsor them with contributions. We hope that you will assist us by sponsoring one of the following: -Special “Miles for Smiles” T- Shirts (your name printed with a $100 or greater donation) -Awards Breakfast on the day of the walk-a-thon (food or sponsorship) -Raffle Prizes to enhance our fundraiser (gift certificate or prize from your company) -Any other donations would be greatly appreciated (no amount is too small!) In the past years, our youth group raised $3,000, $5,000, $7,800, $10,000 for Camp Jenny. This year our goal is to raise $11,250!!! With your assistance and sponsorship we know that we can reach this important goal. Thank you for learning about our commitment to Camp Jenny. Please help us to make a difference in the lives of many underprivileged children. This one weekend will help them escape from the troubles they may experience at home and just have a wonderful carefree time at camp. It costs $450 to send one kid to Camp Jenny. Our goal is to send 25 kids through your donations, sponsorships, and participa-tion in our walk-a-thon on Sunday, January, 31st, 2010. Please help us reach our goal.

Thank You In Advance!!! Eliza Schlein
