From the Rabbi’s Study . . . . .
For the past eight years, the Torah Study group has been meeting on a regular basis to study parashat hashavua, the Torah portion of the week. We talk, discuss, debate, agree and disagree with each other. We stick to the text and go off on tangents, all during the same hour. In the end, we come away feeling fulfilled, knowl-edgeable and enlightened.
While studying the Torah is valuable and interesting, there is also a tradition in Judaism to study Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) during the weeks that fall between Pesach and Shavuot. In the coming weeks, our Torah Study group will take up the study of Pirkei Avot.
Avot is one of the sixty-three tractates of the Mishnah (the first compilation of the Oral Law, edited by Rabbi Judah HaNasi in the 2nd Century C.E.). The precursor of the Talmud, the Mishnah was originally passed down verbally and was created to help us better understand and interpret the Torah.
While it is full of instructions and requirements for practicing Judaism, Tractate Avot also “speaks to the aspiring chasid, one who seeks to go beyond the letter of the law. While the rest of the Mishnah deals primarily with the pragmatic details of ritual and regulation, Avot speaks to the person beneath and behind the actions—to one’s
character” (Pirkei Avot: Ethics of the Fathers, Rabbi Yosef Marcus, p. xi.).
Please note that the term chasid used above refers not to a follower of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of the Chasidic movement, but rather to a humble and altruistic person who goes beyond the letter of the law (as the word is used in the Talmud). The root of chasid is the same as chesed, meaning kindness. As such, a chasid is seen as a kind person.
Studying Pirkei Avot will be a new venture for all who join us on Shabbat mornings. I have never studied Pirkei Avot in an organized fashion and I’m looking forward to learning with, and from, those in attendance.
There is much wisdom in Pirkei Avot, and I hope that together, we can not only find pearls of wisdom, but become kinder people, during the process.
The studying of Pirkei Avot will begin on Saturday, April 11th at 10 a.m. I hope to see you there.
May you and yours have a zeisen Pesach!
L’shalom,
Rabbi Beth Jacowitz Chottiner
