Minerals  Processing  Operator  Certificate  

I would like to take this opportunity to bring to your attention the new Minerals Processing Operator Certificate (MPOC) opportunity in our region. This program will provide participants with significant hands-on experience in the mineral processing industry that is recognized and endorsed by industry as a hiring credential. The need for a Mineral Processing Operator Certificate (MPOC) was developed for the new mining operations opening in Northern BC. There is no such training available in Western Canada and that is why the college of New Caledonia has decided to offer the training the College region. This entry level training program will be run parallel to the Mining Industry Certificate. The new program will address the need for trained Mineral Processing Operators, which cover the next step after the ore has been extracted from the mine. The program will be based on the National Occupational Standard for Minerals Processing Operators (2006), which was developed by the Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) to serve as the basis for program development. The MPOC endeavors to provide recognized industry standards in an entry level minerals processing plant education program with the outcome leading to “job ready” individuals or readiness to enter into further technical training.

The College in Fort St. James has worked in partnership with Thompson Creek Metals, Mt. Milligan project to develop this comprehensive entry level program that will serve the mines in the Region. The first two sixteen week programs will be delivered in Fort St. James, October 2012 and January 2013. We invited you to contact the College office (250) 996-7019 or the Mt. MINE 110 Introduction to the Minerals Industry

An introduction the wide scope of the mining industry and prepares students for further courses in mining. The course covers the breadth of the industry from mineral exploration through to processing and marketing of mining products .

MINL120 Essential Skills in Mineral Processing

This course introduces students to Essential Skills that will help students perform the tasks required when working in the Mineral Processing Mill.

MINL 130 Mill Industry Safe Work Practices

Through a variety of courses, the learner will gain understanding and knowledge of safe work practices and WorkSafe BC regulations as they pertain to both the Health, Safety and Reclamation code for Mines in British Columbia and the mining industry.

MINL140 Operate Tools and Equipment

Students will learn the safe handling of operator tools and equipment used in the Minerals Processing Plant

MINL150 Environmental Safety and Chemicals

Students will cover the handling and safety aspects of chemicals and reagents used in the Minerals Processing Plant

MNGT154 Applied Human Relations

This course focuses on the personal management and interpersonal skills that contribute to success in the business world. Areas covered include stress and time management, perceptions, effective communication, and assertiveness skills.

MINL160 Mineral Processing

This course is designated for potential mineral processing operators with no prior training in this area. Basic principles and terminology will be covered along with operating circuits in a typical processing plant.

MINL 170 Job Entry – Mineral Processing

Students will be provided with the fundamental skills in typical mineral processing entry-level positions, and will be coached through industry positions.

 

 

 

APPLICATION PROCESS AND ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS Applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. Completion of Grade 12 with Foundation Math 10 or equivalent, with a “C” grade or better; or

2. CCP/ABE Advanced Certificate; or

3. GED Certificate with Math 030 and Eng 030 or equivalent, with a “C” grade or better in

each; or

4. Mature student applicants must consult with a CNC counsellor or advisor to determine their eligibility; and

5. Submission of a statement of interest in the mineral processing industry, supported by

past activities and future career goals. This statement should be no more than 250 words in length; and

6. Completion of a signed Health/Fitness Declaration.

Note 1: As the mineral processing industry can be a physically demanding environment and to ensure and retain employment, it is important for potential candidates to evaluate their own health and fitness in this context. Note 2: The applicant will be required to sign a declaration that states the applicant:

is physically able to perform tasks for the successful completion of the program, and does not have health issues that would preclude them from taking part in the field orientation, skill certification, and job entry operations components of the program.
