Mikva forced me to think critically and put my ideas of impacting society into meaningful action.

Mikva Challenge introduced me to the importance of political engagement. My high school years were anexciting time to be involved with politics on a very grassrootslevel, especially since it got my closest friends together. In manyways, Mikva Challenge challenged me to grow into the person I am today: a politically engaged citizen who is passionate about social justice.

Through Mikva, I grew more comfortable with speaking in public. I learned how to use my voice and enthusiasm to becomean advocate for the causes and campaigns I believed in. Most importantly, Mikva exposed me to a political process thatforced me to think critically and put my ideas of impacting society into meaningful action.

Today, combined with my education at Georgetown as anAmerican History major, I’ve used those experiences as ananchor for leveraging political support to help with rebuildingefforts in New Orleans. I lobbied members of Congress to fundaffordable housing measures and to pass the Gulf Coast CivicWorks Act. I currently serve as a national service AmeriCorpsvolunteer rebuilding homes for senior citizens through a relieforganization that positively impacts homeowners along the Gulf Coast. Because of Mikva, service has become part of the fabric of who I am.

CURRENTLY:

BEST MIKVA MOMENT:

Getting exposed to so much whilespending time with my best friends—in oneweek we could be lobbying in Springfield, filming a Teen TV show in Greektown, and then meeting with editors in theboardroom of the Chicago Tribune (when I had never been in a board room before!)

Page 6: Mikva Challenge 2007 Annual Report

I quickly found out that democracy really is a verb; all we ever didduring our project was be active.

When Brian first walked into ourclassroom to introduce the MikvaChallenge to us, I thought it wasgoing to be another boring lecture, but I was wrong. After hearing what theMikva Challenge was about we chose our project, which was to provide at least100 jobs for juniors and seniors. It was a much-needed refreshment from ourmonotonous school life!

I quickly found out that democracy really is a verb; all we ever did during our projectwas be active. We all learned to research—not just online, but also by talking on the phone with government officials andinterviewing school staff. In order to createthe change we wanted we also had to takeinitiative and give speeches to convince people to support our cause. I was scared outof my wits of public speaking but my faithin our goal caused me to at least pretend(during speeches) that I wasn’t scared.

All year, we attended aldermanic debates, met with people to persuade them to supportour project and wrote letters to our alderman. We got so involved in the community that alocal newspaper, StreetWise, wrote an articleabout us and took our picture. By May, wehad won a new jobs program for FarragutHigh School.

When this project started I thought I wouldsimply do my part and be as quiet as couldbe. But, I realized that this project wouldnever work if we all didn’t work together.Everyone added his or her flavor to the mix.Through Mikva, I met people I wouldn’t otherwise talk to. By meeting a wider rangeof people my life was further enriched—and I realized that democracy means that everyone has to be involved.

Presently, I am working on gaining moreallies in my school to fight for animal rights.I’ve been reading about vegetarianism anddoing research online, and then sharing myideas with my friends and even other studentsI didn’t know before. I’ve even convincedsome of them to become vegetarian, too! I always felt passionate about animal rights, but Mikva helped me sharpen the skills I needed for activism—like research, speaking, leadership and teamwork.

The thing that I will most rememberfrom Mikva will be to dream big.Teenagers need to dream big. We only got apart of what we wanted—but we would havegotten much less if we hadn’t dreamed asbig. Because of this we know that next timewe will dream even bigger and do whateverit takes to achieve our dreams.

MIKVA EXPERIENCE:

CURRENTLY:

Representing undergrads in the University of Chicago studentgovernment, planning to teach in Chicago Public Schools in the fall.

BEST MIKVA MOMENT:

Sharing a youth perspective with influential decision-makers at the “Strengthening Education,Strengthening Democracy” conference—and getting a standing ovation for it.

I was already a teenager with ideas and ideals, but working with the Mikva Challenge helpedme learn the skills I needed to translate thought into action. In addition to the hands-on training I received in facilitation, understanding the grant process and policy analysis, one of the most incredible aspects of my experience with Mikva was the time I spent with my peers. It was inspiring tobe among such a diverse group of studentleaders and student leaders-to-be, andhearing about the things they were doingto enact change in their communities.

Our success wasn’t just a natural byproductof ambition—we always knew we had thesupport of adult allies who could adviseus without being overbearing, listen to us without being condescending and trustour instincts when we felt sure aboutsomething. The encouragement fromMikva staff, as well as from one another, gave us the confidence to believe we could accomplish great things withoutthe hesitation that often plagues youngpeople who are trying to make a difference.

“Who on earth,” they wonder, “careswhat I think?” For us, that nagging question had a definitive answer.

When I get the chance to take my Mikva skills into a larger arena, I am alwaysproud. The summer after I graduatedhigh school, I traveled to Washington, D.C.to research effective service-learning methods and present my findings to congressional staff on Capitol Hill withthe hope of obtaining increased educationfunding. Two years later, I was invited to speak at a conference on civic education initiatives, and the speakerimmediately before me on the docket was John Glenn, a veritable Americanhero. I was nineteen years old.

I can’t rightfully say that these tasksweren’t daunting, but after my experiencesback home with Mikva, I regarded each policymaker I encountered as anotheradult ally, ready for dialogue, engagement, and support. I found, inevitably, that theytook me seriously because I took myselfseriously—and I took myself seriouslybecause Mikva taught me that I,too, had a voice, and deserved to be heard.

The skills I’ve learned in theseprograms have been invaluable inmy work as a political organizer.

The Mikva Challenge has been a steady contributor to my civicdevelopment for almost a decadenow. From grassroots organizing to bigcity, machine-style politics, Mikva program-ming has empowered me and youth like meto engage our communities and find solu-tions to our problems. I’ve taken part inmany of Mikva’s programs, serving as anelection judge, as a youth advocate in theIssues to Action program, and as a govern-ment intern. The skills I’ve learned in theseprograms have been invaluable in my workas a political organizer. Mikva taught me theimportance of building relationships andhoning messages, and they showed me howpowerful a really good field operation canbe. My time with the Challenge runningpolling places, canvassing for candidatesand producing public service announce-ments urging youth to vote provided mewith the knowledge and networks I neededto make politics my life’s work.

Since my first Mikva experience I’ve worked inpolitics at every level: national, state, regional, and citywide. I’ve had the privilege to be a partof real change in my community. In my timeorganizing Chicago’s 3rd Ward, I witnessed the

power of the people as we defeated a 24-yearveteran of the City Council. I saw that samepower in Indiana’s 8th Congressional District, where through community action we defeateda six-term congressman.

Now that I actually have been able to startbuilding a career out of what I learned as a Mikva volunteer, I feel that I’ve come fullcircle. Recently, I was planning a large scaleElection Day effort for my candidate. With thehelp of my notes from Mikva’s “How to Run a Political Campaign” workshop (and a couplephone calls to Mikva alums) I developed a Get Out the Vote program that reached tens ofthousands of voters statewide. In the aftermath,as media scrambled to put together storieson the record voter turnout, I rememberedall the times the Mikva staff reminded methat I had the power to shape the future of American politics. From serving in mypolling place years earlier as a Mikva-sponsoredelection judge, to that recent election nightwatching every vote be counted, I relivedyears of Mikva experiences in just one day’swork.

Towards my development the Mikva Challengehas contributed resources, contacts, support, advice and a forum for creativity and community building. As the Challenge has grown as a program, I’ve grown as anindividual and as an organizer, a trend thatI hope continues far into the future. TheMikva Challenge provides the toolsand creates the climate necessary foryouth to organize anywhere, fromNew Hampshire to Englewood, from Iowa toAustin. My experience and the experiencesof my fellow alums proves it.
