MAY KENNEL GAZETTE

The hope is that, through online and text donations, readers of the paper will be able to help to contribute to funds set aside by the Trust to provide emergency support to those dogs in greatest need during the current crisis.

Regular updates on the progress of the appeal will appear on the social media channels of both Our Dogs and the Kennel Club, as well as in the paper.

Established in 1987, the Trust has already distributed grants totalling over £11 million to a wide variety of causes supporting its charitable purposes across canine health, support dogs, welfare and rescue.

Chairman of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, Reverend Bill King, said: “The Trust has set aside funds to provide emergency help to dogs who are suffering and it is such welcome news that Our Dogs has launched its appeal supporting this cause. Please help in whatever way you can, as

your donation truly will make a difference for dogs.”

Vince Hogan, Managing Director of Our Dogs, added: “Why not donate the equivalent of an entry fee, or the money you would have spent on petrol going to one show or your show refreshments or even host an online dog

show? Working with the KCCT means that whatever money is raised, we can be sure it will go to supporting rescue dogs with relief funds which we are assured will be distributed quickly and effectively.”

The show win run until the first week of May and is a chance to celebrate our canine

companions during the Covid-19 lockdown, to connect with like-minded dog lovers and to spread a little happiness during these difficult times.

The seven pedigree groups were judged in the first week and attracted a staggering 11,396 entries reaching over 1.1 million people across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The winners were Shadow the Labrador, Ziggy the Bichon Frise, Fudge the Cairn Terrier, Dior the Dalmatian, Queenie the St Bernard, Pharaoh the German Shepherd and Maximus the Otterhound.

The second week of the show saw the novelty classes such as Best Puppy Dog Eyes, Golden Oldie and Best Rescue and the final week was scheduled to feature the activity classes designed to highlight our canine companions getting up to all sorts of fun in their homes and gardens during the current period of social isolation.

There is still time to enter in the final few classes of the activity section as follows, so why not try your luck and show off your much-loved canine chum at the same time?

BORDER COLLIES WIN OBEDIENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Proud owner Shirley said of her win with ‘Tsu’tey’: “The last three dogs I had run at Crufts failed to complete the round, so my aim this year was just to get to the end with Tsu’tey. Winning the ticket and making him into an Obedience Champion was definitely a bonus. Most people who compete in obedience have two aims – to get to Crufts and to make up a champion – so this was a very happy show for me indeed.”

In relation to ‘Fia’, the winner of the Bitch Championship, Crufts Show Manager Vanessa McAlpine said: “Huge congratulations to Fia and Jodi for their impressive Crufts win. Their strong bond was highlighted in their excellent teamwork and it was great to see

how obedient Fia was. Obedience competitors come from far and wide in the UK to showcase their skills at the show and the standard of dogs and their handlers who enter are always very impressive.”

The Reserve Obedience Certificates were awarded to, in dogs, Sue King’s Working Sheepdog, Ob Ch Jodame Dutch Courage, and in bitches, Mary Ray’s Border Collie, Ob Ch Sarkam Sings The Blues.

All competitors at the championships had made it through to the final from one of the 46 championship shows that hosted qualifying classes for the Crufts Obedience Championships.

Two Border Collies were the winners of the Obedience Championships at Crufts – in dogs, Sarkam Soul Searcher owned by Shirley Clowes from Stone, Staffordshire and in bitches, Ob Ch Longwaves Luminescent owned by Jodi Lunn from Tonbridge, Kent. The judge was Michelle Newman.

Wildsea Phoenix Of Fire, a ten-year-old Border Collie, and his owner Caroline Garrett, from Hove, East Sussex, won the Heelwork to Music final at the world’s greatest dog show, Crufts.

Caroline and ‘Fawkes’ beat nine other finalists to win the Heelwork to Music final on Friday 6 March.

Each year Crufts hosts the finals of both heelwork to music and freestyle competitions. All advanced level dogs and handlers can qualify for Crufts by entering one or more of a series of qualifying events held throughout the year.

The participants devised routines of up to four minutes, set to music, and performed them with their dog in the Resorts World Arena at the NEC, Birmingham.

The proud owner Caroline said: “I’m absolutely delighted as Crufts has been a big goal of mine over the last months. I’m so proud of how well Fawkes performed today. I’ve already given him two new toys and he’s going to be getting lots of treats this evening!”

Vanessa McAlpine, Crufts Show Manager, commented: “Very well done to Fawkes and Caroline for an impressive routine in the main arena. Heelwork to music is a challenging activity that demands patience, skill and talent to perfect – it was wonderful to see so many wonderful dogs and their handlers at Crufts this year.”

The Large final winner was Dave Munnings’ Border Collie, Ag Ch Comebyanaway Reddy For Fame.

Proud owner Dave said: “That was awesome, ‘Fame’ was amazing. When it’s this standard and everyone’s so good, it’s so close, by the millisecond, one extra stride somewhere can win or lose a whole class.

“There’s the top of the top in the country here and when you get here, there’s the pressure and the nerves, things can go wrong that wouldn’t usually go wrong so to win here is very special.

“Fame is level-headed, she’s crazy when I need her to be, she’s chilled at home. She’s just a perfect dog, I’m so lucky with her.”

The Medium final winner was Ashleigh Butler’s Bearded Collie cross, Eliza Doolots for Ashpen.

Thrilled owner Ashleigh said: “Every year the competition gets quicker and quicker, there’s new training techniques, handling techniques, so the build up to Crufts was all about building Eliza’s stamina and getting her in the best shape she possibly is.

“It’s such an honour to bring another dog and be competitive with her and Crufts is like no other show. I still get as nervous ahead of every single run and I still get that buzz from the crowd driving you on down to that last jump and finishing, so I just love Crufts!”

The Small final winner was Lauren Langman’s Cocker Spaniel, Ag Ch Samsir Blinkin Brilliant at Devongem.

Lauren said of her win with ‘Blink’: “That was so much fun. I’ve been here many times and I’ve not won it so it’s

amazing to keep trying and finally do the big one.

“Agility is, for us, 24/7. We sleep it, we dream it, we think it, we train it. It’s a lot of fun, a lot of games and it’s not really all agility training, it’s more about relationship so if you’ve got a great relationship then everything falls into place.”

AGILITY CHAMPIONSHIPS PRODUCE THE GOODS!The Agility Championships at Crufts, as usual, attracted a great deal of support from the huge crowds in the main arena. The judge was Jackie Gardner and all three finals produced the goods as far as excitement was concerned.

The Kennel Club Charitable Trust (KCCT) provides grants to various canine organisations nationwide, many of which are involved in the rescue and welfare of dogs. In 2017, the KCCT gave grants totalling nearly £675,000.

Your support is essential to us and by giving whatever you can afford, you can help make a difference for dogs.

The KCCT has three objectives, the funding of:

SCIENCE - Research into diseases and other health conditions for dogs

SUPPORT - The training of dogs to help humans

WELFARE - The rescue and re-homing of dogs which need help

q. For Licences issued to Authorised Clubs or Societies for Limited Agility Shows there would be no change to fees up to and including the first 10 licences per year, thereafter from 11-15 licences the fee would be £100 per day and for 16 or more licences a year it would be £150 per day.

RALLY & LISTED STATUS AGILITYThe fees for Rally & Listed Status Agility are both £60. Listed Agility also has an additional fee of 5p per dog over 1000 dogs (maximum £100).
