AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONAL JUDGE

RAY DESMARAIS

I was born and raised in New Hampshire, spent a few years in the Air Force, college in Florida and New Hampshire before settling down in the seacoast area of New Hampshire. I own my own environmental consulting firm specializing in occupational exposure and safety in the work place and home.

My wife Alison and I have been fortunate to own some truly wonderful and talented dogs who have earned championships in conformation, obedience, tracking and agility. Breeding under the kennel name Mirsol (“looking at the sun”) for more than 20 years, our primary focus is producing versatile and long-lived dogs that meet the standard for the golden retriever, recognizing that a structurally sound dog is important to any aspect of competition. We have earned more than 20 tracking titles including four Champion Trackers, two who were also breed Champions and the first VCCH breed Champion of any breed.

If I am not judging a tracking event you may see me at the draw as an exhibitor, or at the start line at an agility trial or triathlon.

Other interests when not playing with dogs are swimming, running and woodworking.

SALLY ELKINS

Sally began exhibiting her own Bassets in conformation using the kennel name Schooze over 40 years ago. A big red and white male named Pee Wee who wanted to do things his own way, led her to obedience classes. A Doberman, a Poodle and her Basset worked their way through novice and open titles. The Doberman and Poodle passed her and Pee Wee up flying through Utility. At that time, Tracking Rules were the next chapter in the AKC Obedience Rules book. None of the handlers or instructors in Houston, Texas had ever taught tracking and could not really tell us where to start. Books, trial and error and having a hound that loved to eat opened the doors to a sport that Sally has promoted throughout the Southwest.

Sally has bred and campaigned Bassets, English Cockers, and Pomeranians in Conformation, Obedience and Rally events, Sally has with the help of her canine companions earned 21 T's and 5 TDX's . Currently she and her English Cocker Mandy are training for TDX and VST.

Sally is Past President of two All-Breed Clubs. San Jacinta Kennel Club and Cypress Creek Kennel Club of Texas. The Basset Hound Club of Greater Houston and is a life member of Southwest Tracking Association.

Sally retired after 34 years of working with middle school children as a Counselor Coordinator at the Houston Ind. School District. She has two children, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. While her own children never shared her love for tracking, her grandchildren have always been willing track layers and cross-track layers. Her great granddaughter is eager to have another birthday so that she can compete as a junior handler.

AKC NATIONAL TRACKING INVITATIONAL JUDGE

JOSEPH HAMZY

Joe and his wife Mary Ann have owned Flat-Coated Retrievers since 1981. The energy that their second dog, Kelsey, brought with her needed something besides ‘pet’ training. So they started training for AKC Performance Events. They started with hunt tests and then entered their first conformation show. They learned about tracking there and continued to obedience and agility. Joe and Mary Ann became hunt test judges and Joe became a tracking judge in 1996.

Joe and Mary Ann have shown several of their dogs to breed championships. In 2000 Rick, CH CT MACH Wingmaster Forever Paris SH MXS MJG WCX became the first Flat-Coat Champion Tracker and subsequently Ilsa in 2007 and now Time in 2013. Kid and Blue both have VSTs.

Joe is a retired architect and now has plenty of time to train. Florida weather allows training all venues year-round so that means a lot of time with the dogs. Utility training is even included – a first.

Joe served on the 2004 AKC Tracking Advisory Committee and is now honored to be a judge at the 2013 AKC National Tracking Invitational.

CT ELISSA’S GOLDEN BAILEY CD

“BAILEY”

Bailey amazed us from a young age with his ability to follow a scent and his absolute joy in doing it. Bailey was 6 months old when he was certified over dry, sparse grass in Lexington, KY. Only two months later, in freezing temperatures and gale winds, he attained his TD outside of Atlanta.

Bailey is a strong dog and at 100 pounds, he is a handful. He runs the track at full speed, tail wagging, dragging me behind him. When he achieved his TDX at almost 2 years old, he was going so fast the judges were afraid I would fall going over the obstacles and cautioned “try to grab the articles as you run by.”

Six months later he successfully completed the VST course. We loved tracking with him and traveling to the trials. We are delighted to have been invited to the Tracking Invitational.

Bailey is working on obedience titles, but he loves tracking most of all. We will be running tracks with him just for the joy of it until he is too old or until we are! Bailey is a sweet dog who makes us laugh with his crazy antics. We are lucky to have him.

CH CT WINDWARD’S COMPASS ROSE RN AX OAJ OF

“ROSEBUD”

Michael Roehrs has been training and showing dogs in AKC events since 1983. While only competing in tracking since 2000, he has put 5 TD's, 5 TDX's, 2 VST's and 2 CT's on his Field Spaniels. He obtained his first CT in 2010 on CH CT Bitterblue's Windward Tiller RN MX AXJ NAP NJP. Two years later, he obtained his second CT on her daughter CT CH Windward's Compass Rose, AX OAJ NF RN. These accomplishments are particularly special for these dogs as both where not expected to live after they had gotten into poison years earlier.

When not training dogs for tracking or agility, Mike lives in the country with his wife Joanne and their 5 Field Spaniels and numerous farm animals. To pay for his "dog habit," Mike works as a Clinical Social Worker in Private Practice, specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy and working with individuals with chronic and terminal medical conditions. They breed Field Spaniels under the prefix "Windward." Several of his dogs are Therapy Dog certified and accompany him to his office on a regular basis. Mike became a provisional Tracking Dog Judge in 2012.

She was one in a litter of 10 puppies and stole my heart immediately with her independence and moxie. She is a strong-willed dog, willing to try almost anything…obedience, rally, agility, herding and especially tracking. Flicka completed her TDX and VST within six months of each other, when she was four years of age, thus finishing her CT title. Now retired from tracking, Flicka often assists Mom and friend, Jean Hilbig, when they teach tracking seminars.

Owner/Mom, Lynn Kaemmerer, is retired from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and is now an AKC CGC/Star Puppy evaluator and trainer at a local training center. She especially loves the puppy classes and promoting the owner/dog bond through training. Lynn is responsible for Corgi Rescue for most of the western states and is VP in the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Rockies. She began tracking with her first Corgi, 25 years ago under the expert tutelage of Carole-Joy Evert. Now, Lynn teaches tracking classes weekly and is an active member of Denver Foothills Tracking Association in Denver.

Flicka is a very sweet, determined dog who is small of stature but considers herself a giant breed. Like most Corgis, she is extremely food motivated. She helps in the garden, especially in our strawberry patch, where she sniffs out all the ripe strawberries before Dad can get them! Flicka lives in Littleton, Colorado with Lynn and John and younger PWC brother, Eli, who is 1 year old and wants to emulate his big sister in tracking.

“TINK”

Tink began her tracking career at 4 months of age. She is a natural, very dedicated to the sport and she focuses on her tracks almost obsessively. Waiting the last few minutes of age before she can go to the start flag is all but painful for her.

We entered her into a test at 9 months of age. She flew through the track to earn her TD that day. At 17 months of age, we were in a TDX test and she aced her track even though I got stuck in a ditch and required the assistance of the judges to get out. On June 17, 2012, she passed her VST track earning the CT. It was a very Happy Father’s Day for my husband from our darling girl.

In addition to tracking, Tink also hunts and does agility, obedience, and rally. She is also a Therapy Dog visiting at hospice weekly where she shares joy with patients and their families.

Tink is our first cocker; she brings us so much joy. She is a phenomenal partner in all her events and excels at home companionship. She thoroughly enjoys swimming and her 5 canine and 2 feline “siblings” at home. She has overcome great adversity in the form of a bumbling handler (me!).

Devon is everything I hoped and dreamed she would be. Thanks to Gayle Watkins and Carvel Gold for entrusting me with this wonderful girl.

Not only is Devon beautiful, but she eagerly trains in tracking, field, agility and obedience – making heads turn in each venue. She’s my first certified tracking dog and on the day she certified, when she was 7-months old, she indicated a 48-hour old cross track – something the judge noticed and knew, but I did not. When asked how far I wanted to take this dog, I said, “To a Champion Tracker!” not really knowing what all it would take to earn that title.

Along the way, Devon taught me how dogs work scent and how to watch and learn from your dog. Most importantly, Devon has a big heart. She trains hard, guts out the tough tests with style and loves to snuggle close during down time.

Together we have achieved things I never dreamed of doing, and we aren’t finished yet!

We are elated with having the opportunity to participate in the AKC Invitational. Our family has enjoyed the companionship of German Shepherd Dogs for 40 years and has been involved in obedience, agility, rally, and conformation events but Targhee is our first dog to earn AKC tracking titles. Tarhgee has been a fun dog to work with as he naturally enjoys tracking and we are proud of his accomplishments and work ethic. Targhee’s success has been especially satisfying as he follows in the foot-steps of his sire, our Hoch Berg Trapper V Waterton, CDX RAE AXJ MXJ, who demonstrated great scent detection and tracking work ethic while working at specialized tasks.

As with all our dogs, Targhee is first a buddy and companion and second a working dog. We appreciate all the help provided by our great tracking friends in the Denver Foothills Tracking Association (AKC) whose dedication to tracking and tracking events is remarkable. Best wishes to all the teams at this year’s Tracking Invitational and thank you to all the volunteers who work tirelessly to support tracking trials.

“ROSIE”

Karen and Rick Yates got their first Lab Sarah in 1984. She was the foundation for their dogs who have earned titles in Obedience, Hunt Tests, Agility, Rally, and Therapy work.

When Karen discovered tracking, a new world opened up. Although earning only one TD before Rosie came along, every Mellowrose dog in their household has tracked from an early age. Karen attended the first VST workshop in Texas, and to participate in the Invitational is a dream come true.

When Rosie was born into Karen's waiting hands, her tail was wagging, and it has not stopped since. She is an amazing girl, and Karen and Rick are extremely proud of her, and her youngsters who carry on her excitement for performing in many venues.

Rosie earned her certification and TD first time out. TDX took 3 tries. For VST the 13th try was the magic day. On a 30 degree day with 15-20 mph wind, (not normal tracking weather in Central Texas) Rosie decisively found her way to the final article in 14 minutes. The gallery was in vehicles because of the cold, so instead of shouts they heard car horns!

Rosie and Karen are extremely grateful to the folks in STA and DFWTC, and especially to tracking partner and cheerleader Debbie Ligon. It takes a tracking community to make a CT.

Inge has competed regularly in obedience, rally, hunt tests, agility and tracking. She has been active in several local obedience, tracking and national clubs, serving as officer, test and trial secretary/chair and conducted training classes. Trapper joined the family in 2002 and what a great addition he has been! He is always ready for the next job, whether it be training or competing in obedience, agility, or tracking, fetching a bumper or just going for a walk. He has been an enthusiastic training partner, and best of all a great family dog and companion. Although Trapper is too large to be considered a lap dog, he still thinks he should be able to crawl up onto your lap. At 11+ years young, he shows no signs of slowing down! Inge feels very fortunate to have this opportunity to run Trapper in another tracking test!

“ETHAN”

1st, I want to thank breeders Neil and Alvedia Viles, Des Moines, WA for giving this bright boy to me in hopes of my putting a title after his name. And without the encouragement and financial help from The Manchester Terrier folks we wouldn’t be here!

Ethan was given to me as a 1 year old. I was tracking my other dogs so decided to try him at it. He really surprised me in his drive and skill. He had his TD in a few months and his TDX a few months later both as 1st attempts. VST was far more difficult for us as it was barely known in the Northwest. I floundered for quite some time until it was pointed out by a very observant judge that Ethan was in charge, so let him do it. As I was basically his only tracklayer I had to be very conscious of what I was doing/not doing. After her observation he passed his next test at the University of Portland, (OR) hosted by Portland Dog Obedience..their 1st pass!

Ethan had an acute herniated disc in his neck of March of this year, immobilizing him. I had to make a decision. He did have neurosurgery but has recovered remarkably well.

I put my 1st TD on a Schipperke in 1988 as well as other tracking titles on Wire-Hair Dachshunds. I am currently trying for a TDX on my Schipperke. I so love seeing pure-bred dogs doing something as complex as tracking.

I am Champion Tracker Pixey Girl Utility Dog - a very important Maltese.

I live with Carol Kollander. She does the driving for me when we go to tracking trials.

On October 9, 1976, Carol and Mr. Feather Maltese became the first Maltese to get a tracking degree in four countries (Canada, United States, Bermuda and Mexico). Also, Mr. Feather was chosen by Glen Johnson to be in his Tracking Book. So all I hear about is how wonderful Mr. Feather was!

Then, on November 9, 2008, Carol and I went to Fairbanks, Alaska, where I got a VST. Finally I had beaten Mr. Feather's record! He had not gotten a VST (there were no VST degrees at that time). A few weeks later, I got my TDX so I became the first Tracking Maltese Champion.

Carol also likes to take me to Obedience Trials. After the trials many judges would say I am the happiest dog in the ring! I like to show off!

“BREWSTER”

Thirty years ago, I was introduced to tracking with our first beagle, mentored by a tracking teacher who had learned from Wilson Davis. Four beagles and two Weimaraners later, I am convinced that there is no greater joy than following behind a tracking dog. My Florida tracking groups have provided lifelong friends and many adventures. I’ve had some lovely tracking dogs, but Brewster was the dog I was waiting for. He’s a consistent, enthusiastic tracker with a quick intelligence that is a delight to train. After reading a newspaper article about police bloodhounds being

trained with a tracklayer wearing wet socks, we tried that technique for VST with great success (even if we did worry the park police when they watched me wandering through a parking lot while wetting my socks with a water bottle). At age five, Brewster was the third beagle to earn the CT title. Team Brewster always has a good time in whatever venue we’re working and I thank him for letting me reach a lifetime goal.

Spring has been a very focused tracker, right from the start. He progressed quickly in his training and accepted each challenge. Whenmy tracklayer and I fell and slid down a snowy hill while tracking, knocking Spring off his feet, he got up and continued to track, leaving us laughing at the bottom of the hill. The deer standing in the field, the geese refusing to move off his track by the lake, the car stopping

2 feet shy of his end article as he approached it, or the sprinklers turning on in the middle of VST training tracks never distracted him. We arrived early to agility trials to lay tracks and ran tracks between agility runs. It was all worth it.

Spring earned his TD in Lexington, KY on his first attempt Feb 2009, TDX in Nashville, TN on his first attempt Feb 2010, and his VST at the Field Spaniel Club of America test Sept 2011 on his 3rd attempt. This made Spring the second cocker spaniel to earn a Champion Tracker title. Most recently, August 3, 2013, Spring completed his Master Agility Champion title in Murfreesboro, TN.

”ARROW”

I was looking for a family pet, not a new way of life, when I adopted Arrow from a shelter almost ten years ago, but Arrow had different plans! I had never owned a dog before, and I soon realized I was going to need extensive training in order to keep a young border collie happy. He breezed through beginner obedience, we moved on to agility, rally and herding, and he certified as a therapy dog. Once I had seen firsthand the incredible intelligence, activity level and work ethic of border collies, I fully appreciated why they often run into difficulties living in a typical “pet” home. I began volunteering for Glen Highland Farm, border collie rescue, and as an intake coordinator, I have evaluated, transported or fostered many hundreds of dogs in the past eight years.

Arrow's interest in tracking arose out of playing hide-and-seek with my son Nicholas, who was then a boy of five. Arrow understood the task in minutes, and there was no better reward than finding his favorite boy! To this day, tracking remains Arrow's greatest joy, and he screams with excitement when he sees his harness. Heartfelt thanks to the many trainers and training partners we have had along our journey to CT – you have enriched our lives immeasurably. And many thanks to Arrow, the best partner a person could ever have – dear Arrow, I'd follow you anywhere.

Jazz finished her OTCH in August 2011 and after that I wanted to seriously go back to tracking. I believe she is the first Labrador Retriever to obtain the combination of OTCH and CT titles. We were very fortunate to get in to the first test we entered and then we passed on our first attempt! The tracking conditions were perfect in my mind. The temperature was in the mid-60s and it was cloudy. We completed the track in 11 minutes. I had intended to stay in close behind her, but she was moving so fast and confident that a lot of the time I was back 20 feet just hanging on. I truly love obedience however; the rush of emotion when she found that final article was just incredible. In January of this year we started playing in agility. She is an incredible best friend and loves to do everything.

Ellie is my Novice A dog. I knew nothing about dog training until she was two when a friend suggested agility for fun. This led to obedience, rally, and fieldwork. We started competing when she was 4 and we were hooked.

Then we discovered tracking, and I immediately knew that I wanted to train for a CT – a big challenge. The title was the goal but it was not the ends. It was a means for us to learn something new and do something we both really enjoyed. In the process, it deepened my relationship with this wonderful dog. I came to appreciate her for her quirky ways and special talents; her focus and perseverance. She always rose to the challenge. No problem was too big for her. She analyzed and patiently plowed through. Ellie earned her TD at 4 1/2, her TDX at 5 ½ and her CT at 8 ½.

Ellie is now 11 ½, and, although she has slowed down a bit, when I get out the tracking harness, she comes to life and acts like a two-year old --whining at the door as I go out to lay her track. Except during the winter, we still track 2-3 times a week. For her 11th birthday we entered a TD test in Vermont and she got her second TD in 5 minutes – 2 minutes faster than the first time! And the judges said she was a joy to watch.

Ellie is incredible and I am so grateful to her for taking me on this journey and for each day we have together. I am also grateful to my trainer and all those friends who were there to support us on this adventure.

And we don’t know where they have walked (driven, biked, waded, swum, etc.) Julot has always had to go back and forth between the 28 searches for missing people and training tracks. Over time, Julot has developed the confidence and motivation to tackle just about any scent discrimination problem.

For relaxation Julot and I play with free style. He loves to prance for music.

“LUCY”

Lucy was rescued from the Medfield Animal Shelter eight years ago. My wife Kate O'Brien and I get to train and compete with Lucy in tracking, rally, field, obedience, agility, and freestyle in multiple registries. Lucy is a learning machine and constantly challenges us and makes us smile. In 2011 she won "The Challenge", an award for the most versatile lab at the Labrador Retriever National Specialty.

Spinal surgery has slowed her down a beat, but tracking is something that she can still do at a high level. Our adventures with tracking have built a tremendous relationship between us. I am so lucky to get to work with Lucy.

“HEMI”

I am honored to be invited to the 2013 National Tracking Invitational with Hemi, my male English Cocker Spaniel bred by Cortney Oliver and Helyne E. Madeiros. I had the luxury of gaining tracking and

handling experience from my first Champion Tracker, Shadow, also a male English Cocker Spaniel, enabling Hemi to become my second Champion Tracker. Hemi loves to work and his desire to please makes him a great team partner in any activity, tracking, hunt training, conformation, agility, obedience, and rally. He earned his VST at the Buckeye Tracking Club test in Chardon, Ohio the fall of 2011 under judges Beth Walker and Linda Baschnagel. Hemi was challenged by a very windy day but managed to solve the scent scenarios presented. The last article was missing but Hemi briefly indicated the rock that had been used to hold it down by the track layer before continuing on out of the parking lot on track.

I want to wish all the tracking teams good luck!

CH CT Zerimar's Tropical Storm Danya and I wish all of the teams exhibiting in the 2013 AKC NTI the very best. Congratulations to all of the tracking teams that entered the NTI and a sincere thank you to the track layers, test workers and judges that gave us all the opportunity to title.

I remain humbled by my Danya's abilities, she came that way, and I realize how fortunate I am to have this pretty Belgian girl. She is very much the boss of me.

A shout out to the man that introduced and implemented VST to create the Champion Tracker title. Thank you John Barnard, I very much enjoy having this additional opportunity to place my hands on my dogs in praise beyond the TD and TDX.

Thank you AKC for showcasing the CT dog.

Compay started his tracking career on the first day with me at 7 weeks of age. He certified at 14 weeks, but had a shoulder injury requiring surgery for OCD and couldn't track that fall. He rapidly completed the TD in the spring of 2008, and went on to earn his second TD at the Poodle Club of America's first Tracking

event in 2008. Compay earned his VST in May of 2009, followed by his TDX in September of 2008. Compay earned a second TDX and the 2010 PCA and has also enjoyed tracking in Canada.

Compay earned his CKC TD as a 7 month old puppy prior to his injury. He then went on to earn his UTD on the second try in May of 2008 and his TDX on the first try in Sept of 2008. He is still working on the UTDX and his tracking career got put on hold again in August of 2011 when he drew in for the NTI that year. Unfortunately, he pulled his cranial cruciate ligament and needed a knee reconstruction on the day of the draw and had to remain home for rehabilitation. That backyard injury also ended his agility career.

Compay continues to enjoy tracking and has helped many new tracking people as well by taking them out on a track laid by that person. He continues to train for Canada and he is now enjoying Nosework as well.

This picture of Compay tracking was taken at one of the many PCA tracking events and shows best his deep nose tracking style.

CT Aljamar Witch Kraft, aka "the world's worst dog" and "witchy girl", has had a very busy life. She earned her UKC-CH and CDX, added her Canadian CD and her AKC CDX. She has two legs toward her third RAE. Her TD was achieved over high hills in snow up to her chin. Then she met Penny Kurz, a tracking guru, who worked with her and handled her in her TDX track which Krafty ran so quickly that the judges could not keep up. Her VST was earned with Penny in cold pouring rain. In between these accomplishments, Krafty worked for several years as a therapy dog.

Krafty's tracking championship would not have been earned without the persistence, skill and intuitive wisdom of Penny Kurz who recognized Krafty's ability and was able to perfect it so that she became the first fox terrier Champion Tracker. The basis for Krafty's tracking career was laid by Judy Shortino who saw Krafty's potential from the very beginning.

“If I were lost in the rubble of a disaster, this tenacious talented terrier is the dog I would want to come and find me. It was a privilege to work with her.” Penny Kurz.

He is not my first breed champion or obedience title holder but he is my first Poodle. JIB is thirteen now and he will be a hard act to follow.

I had never tracked, but this Poodle had endless energy and drive with the intelligence and dedication to be successful in any venue. On a Caribbean island with only a soccer field of lawn, I began tracking. Using Judy Adler's wonderful book, The Audible Nose, I found my Poodle understood way more than I did about the game. At home in Texas I found instructor Marge Cook who lead me toward the tests and tracking required for the titles. When JIB earned his VST on Texas soil, we all felt it was a marvelous and rare accomplishment.

Just the thought of following JIB on a track in Kentucky at the nationals is like a dream, and so many have come true for us, that there is no harm in dreaming. I'm wishing all the lucky teams drawn a perfect day, and a hug to each dog.

Whatever he does, he is center stage and performances bring cheers and laughter. One obedience judge exclaimed, "Wow, I’ve never seen anything like that!" Stitch had done a perfect drop on recall, then three more drops, a front, and a finish. More importantly, he brings that joy and enthusiasm to all those he visits in his role as therapy dog.

Hello! Mum is judging an urban tracking test in Canada this weekend so I get to write my own review. He, He! Officially I started tracking when I was 6 weeks old (but I had already been scent tracking my food since I was born). Mum decided I had real tracking potential when I tracked her back to the car from a school ground when I was 11 weeks old.

I got my TD at the English Cocker National Specialty when I was 10 months old. I got my TDX the following year at Rock Cut State Park in Illinois. On my first VST test I had the final article in my mouth when one of the judges blew a whistle that I hadn’t done a moment of truth as originally plotted on a 30 mph windswept parking lot. Hummm….!! Well I went on to prove him wrong in spite of ducks, rabbits, and other distractions on tracks.

I finally earned my VST on a convoluted course that included multiple turns on 300 yards of concrete in a stadium at the Kentucky Horse Park. I also have 3 urban tracking titles from tests in Vancouver, Regina, and Thunder Bay
