With Facebook’s huge emphasis on VIDEO, it’s important that you STAND OUT in the News Feed with professional lighting and camera. On the following pages, I set out all my own recommendations for
LightingMicrophonesCameras
Each section is split into mobile and studio. That is, gear you use with your smartphone for professional video on the go, and more stationary gear for your in-home studio.

Video gear - introduction

I strongly recommend you have two lighting systems, both of which can be super affordable:1. Mobile: Lightweight and easy to pack
for use on the go while away from your desk or on trips
2. Studio: more robust, studio-quality lighting

Lighting – 2 SYSTEMS

This is my favorite light to travel with – you can adjust the white and gold tones with the buttons on the back. Add a small tripod and you’re good to go! See Rotolight on iOgrapher.
I personally love all the gear at iOgrapher but you can shop around for this particular light, including on Rotolight’s website.
See also this full collection of lights on iOgrapher’s website.

Mobile Lighting - ROTOLIGHT
marismith.com | @marismith
The Lume Cube is an excellent, less-expensive alternative to the Rotolight.
The light can be quite bright/harsh compared to the Rotolight, so don’t have it too close to your face. Be sure to also get a small tripod for this.Travels really well, small & compact!

Mobile Lighting – SELFIE RING LIGHT

For mobile, you might just want to get this fabulous bundle that my friend Dave Basulto, founder of iOgrapher put together for my friends!
The kit contains:Phone case, lenses, iRig Mic Lav, clip on Diva Light, & tripodTake a look here

Mari Smith Live Video Kit - MOBILE

Video Lighting Kit by Neewer 18” (48cm), 55W 5500K Dimmable LED Ring Light + Light Stand + White & Orange Filters
See on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2zlv9VQYou’ll find a variety of this type of light, often referred to as a “Diva Light”The ring light casts a lovely soft light on your entire face and shows a circle reflection in your eyes when close up.I highly recommend using the filters; I have two of these ring lights and split the filters so I have 2 white & 2 orange filters on each!

Studio Lighting – RING LIGHT
marismith.com | @marismith
For broadcasting on Facebook Live from your desktop, in addition to your ring light in front of you, I highly recommend adding fill lights to the left and right of your computer. You’ll get a lovely, professional look and feel. Tabletop Lights by Lowel EGO Fluorescent Light Unit
These lights are great for a small space; simply place one either side of your camera/webcam/computer. I’ve had two of these lights for over six years and they are in perfect condition; I’ve never needed to change bulbs yet! You could shop around for a a better price or get something similar that is cheaper. See on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2AoUGgSThere are many other options for two side lights.

Studio Lighting – TABLETOP LIGHTS
marismith.com | @marismith
If you have the space for an in-home studio with a bigger footprint, definitely look into a pair of soft box lights with diffusers (to use instead of the tabletop lights). Two Soft Box Lights by Craphy: 700W 5500K Lighting Kit with 20x28" Softbox + 80" Tall Light Stand + Carrying Bag
See on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2zmlIrgOr, you’ll find other choices, brands, and price ranges.

Once your lighting set up looks great, you’ll want to ensure you have the perfect audio. Again, separating into your MOBILE tool kit and your STUDIO gear, check out the suggested options on the following pages.

Microphone
marismith.com | @marismith
This simple iRig Mic Lav is a clip on lavalier/lapel microphone from iOgrapher and is an excellent choice.
It comes in a small case, handy for travelIt also has an extra jack to act as a “splitter,” so you can chain up two iRigMic Lav’s to the same device – great for doing interviews on the road!
For other mobile mic options, see this collection of mics at iOgrapher.

Mobile Microphone – iRIG MIC LAV

For my professional microphone, a few years back, I referenced the Podcast Answerman, Cliff Ravenscraft’srecommendations found here.
Cliff’s list contains all kinds of gear for professional podcasting that is now sold in one complete bundle.

Studio Microphone - HEIL
I bought my mic, shock mount, pop filter, and boom from Amazon, which you can find in a kit here:
Heil PR-40 Broadcast Quality Microphone Bundle The pop filter does not come with the package on Amazon. I got mine from BSWPlus, to make the mic work on your computer, you’ll also need an XLR to USB mini adaptor by Shure – I got mine on AmazonI’ve had this set up for over two years and love it
marismith.com | @marismith
For doing your Facebook Live broadcasts from your desktop, you’ll need to decide if you want to have your microphone in the frame or not.
Some folks are fine having a headset micUsing the boom, I’m usually able to place my Heil PR-40 just below the camera frame.
You could get a ‘shotgun’ mic like this Sennheiser MK 600 and place it overhead. I have this one as well for a separate studio in my home-office.Alternatively, this Audio-Technica AT2005USB dynamic mic is an excellent, affordable choice. I also have this mic! You’ll just need to do some sound tests to see how close you need to be and may find the mic is in the frame, which is okay! Other choices include the Blue Snowball & Blue Yeti microphones. Yes, I have one each of them as well! Omg, I’ve gone through so many mics over the years. Each has their pluses and minuses and sometimes you have to test to see what works best for your needs.

Studio Microphone – OTHER OPTIONS

marismith.com | @marismith
For starting out, you can certainly just use your laptop or desktop computer’s built-in cameraOr, to kick it up a notch, add an inexpensive external USB webcam such as the Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920, 1080p
22
Camera - WEBCAM
marismith.com | @marismith
If you really want to stand out on Facebook and other social channels with your television-quality video and Live broadcasts, you really need to invest in a DSLR camera. This camera is a great choice: Canon EOS Rebel SL1 Digital SLRwith 18-55mm STM Lens
You’ll need this cable to connect your camera to your computer: Canon Powershot SX50 HS USB Cable -Mini USB
23
Camera – DSLR Canon
marismith.com | @marismith
I also like this camera: Sony Alpha a600024.3MP Digital Camera with 16-50mm Power Zoom and 55-210mm Lenses
I added this lens to my Sony a6000: Sony 50mm f/1.8 Mid-Range Lens for Sony E Mount Nex Cameras
You may need extra gear if your computer doesn’t have the required driver for your camera
For example, to make my Sony a6000 work with my iMac, I neeed this Black Magic Ultrastudio Mini Recorder
24
Camera – DSLR Sony
marismith.com | @marismith
Just to illustrate the difference, here are example Facebook Live broadcasts I did in 2016 using my Logitech HD webcam (L) vs. more recent broadcasts using my Sony a6000 (R)
Clearly, I changed my backdrop/setting & also lighting a bit. The two videos on the left with the webcam don’t have the lovely depth of field that the two on the right with the DSLR do.
Each thumbnail is hyperlinked to the actual Facebook video if you want to take a peek! (Factors impacting HD streaming include software choice and Internet speed; the 3rd example below is from Facebook native desktop and is low resolution… BUT, the camera still looks amazing!)

I highly recommend getting a nifty case for your smartphone to stabilize your video broadcasts.
The smartphone cases from iOgraphercan all be mounted on tripods of any size. I never go anywhere without my iOgrapher case and mini tripod for my iPhone! Plus, you could easily use this setup for broadcasting from home. Along with the iRig Mic Lav & suggested mobile lighting mentioned above.
