Sir, - I am reproducing below areport published three yearsback in Mambalam Times issuedated August (7 – 13), 2010:

Huge pit turns into pond onconstruction site

By Our Staff ReporterA huge pit dug for construction

work at 158, G. N. Chetty Road, T.Nagar (opposite Hotel Partha)has turned into a pond followingthe recent rains and become abreeding ground for mosquitoes.

Residents told MambalamTimes that the pit was dug 5months back but there has been noactivity since then.

They said that Corporationworkers are not spraying pesti-cides on the surface of the water toprevent mosquitoes breeding.

Even after three years, the situ-

Sir, I am a resident of Jagadeeswaran Street(T. Nagar).

The road which was laid three years ago is noteven and a 200-meter stretch between door no.21/6 and 23/7 is low-lying which leads to waterlogging even after light showers, thereby caus-ing hardship to the residents.

I have complained to the concerned officialsbut no action has been taken so far to raise thelevel of the stretch and make it even.

Chennai Corporation, instead of leveling theroad, used to drain the logged water into anearby manhole. Recently, the manhole coversank leaving a gaping hole and the road wasclosed for a fortnight for bigger vehicles till anew manhole cover was put in place.

I request the authorities to level the roadimmediately and relieve the residents of theduress. - S. Soundararajan, JagadeeswaranStreet, T. Nagar

Uneven surface leads to waterlogging on Jagadeeswaran Street

Raja Street residents face multitude of problemsSir, Raja Street residents are traumatized on many fronts. Shop-

pers to T. Nagar’s commercial hub have converted our street into afree parking space for their vehicles. The street ends have becomeopen urinals for nearby vendors and passersby. Even a short spell ofrain floods the street which is riddled with potholes. It has been agessince it has been re-laid. Though many streets in the area wererepaired recently, Raja Street for some unknown reason was ignored. The paramount problem we are facing now is mixing of sewage waterwith Metrowater thereby causing health hazards.

I appeal to the authorities to rid Raja Street residents of theseproblems. — Tajy Prasad, Flat 7, Rams, 19, Raja Street, T. Nagar

ation is the same and no action has been taken by the owners to eithercomplete the construction or level the ground.

After the recent rains, the pit which is enclosed by a wall is filled withrain water and resembles a pond. – R. Balasubramanian, No. 11, OldNo. 6, 1st floor, Ramachandra Road, Pondy Bazaar, T. Nagar, Ph:2815 0338

Sir – De-silting of manholes and storm water drains serve no purpose. The silt that is removed is rarely taken away but dumped on theroadside and many a times in front of houses.

It not only blocks the road but also gives out a foul smell and is apotential health hazard and also serves as a breeding ground formosquitoes. Over a period of time, the silt either spreads on the roador if it rains in the meantime it mixes with the water and flows back intothe drain. Such is the case outside the entrance of 16/30, ThambiahRoad Extension, West Mambalam, which is blocked by a huge moundof silt removed from the storm water drain on July 18.

I hope the concerned authorities take action to remove the silt— N.Ramanathan, 18, Veerasamy Street, West Mambalam

Silt dumped on roadside poses health hazard

Bus route roads encroached uponSir, I am a teacher working in Velankanni School (Kamarajar Salai,

Ashok Nagar). I am writing this letter to bring out the problems facedby our students during commuting.

Most of the buses from K. K. Nagar bus terminus ply through P.T.Rajan Salai and Kamarajar Salai which house a number of offices, shops and commercial establishments. Since the parking space withinthe compounds is limited, employees and visitors park the vehicles onboth sides of the roads hampering vehicle movement. Further there aremany encroachments on the pavements which force the students towalk almost on the middle of the road, thereby risking their lives.

I request the authorities concerned to either divert the bus routesfrom these roads to some other road or to convert the roads into ‘Noparking zones’. Apart from the traffic issues, a TASMAC shop on P. T.Rajan Salai, close to our school and Kendriya Vidyalaya, must also berelocated as it is a social evil. I appeal to the authorities to heed mysuggestions and act at the earliest. – A.R. Bharatharaja, VelankanniSchool, Kamarajar Salai, Ashok Nagar

Motorists violate one-way rule on Veerasamy StreetSir, The one-way rule on Veerasamy Street (West Mambalam) is not

being enforced. It is flouted brazenly by motorists, especially by the parents of

children studying at SRM School which is at one end of the road.It is a complete traffic chaos during the school opening and closing

hours which is causing untold hardship to the drivers of vehiclesemerging from Brindhavan Street and also to the residents of VeerasamyStreet. Further, to beat the traffic, 2-wheeler riders ply even on thenarrow pavements of the road putting pedestrians’ lives in danger.

Traffic constables posted in the nearby Thambiah Street –Brindhavan Street junction turn a blind eye to this daily traffic viola-tion. I appeal to the traffic authorities to strictly enforce the one-wayrule on Veerasamy Street and take strict action against the offend-ers.— S.
