Gudalur Narayanaswami Balasubramaniam was born on Janu-ary 6, 1910.

His father G. V. Narayanaswami Iyer, the popular Headmasterof Hindu High School, Triplicane, was a type-cast Tanjorean to thehilt. Music ran in the veins of Iyer and he was on first-name basis andintimacy with the legendary musical stalwarts of the dayTirukodikaval Krishna Iyer (the violin wizard and SemmangudiSrinivasa Iyer’s uncle), Thirumarugal Natesa Pillai (the greatnagaswaram-exponent T. N. Rajaratnam Pillai’s uncle), PalladamSanjeeva Rao (the famed flautist), and Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar,the greatest Roman of them all. They frequently visited him at hishome in Madras and often sang there. No wonder that music enteredthe soul, sinews and skin of the young lad, Balu.

“Right from my birth I lived in an atmosphere drenched in musicand this helped to nurture, develop and sustain my ardour in music”,GNB wrote later.

Blessed with handsome looks, charm and a malleable melodiousvoice, GNB received encouragement in music from his learnedfather. And he did well in his studies too and secured his B. A. (Hons.)degree in English Literature in 1930.

Like most middle-class Brahmins of the day, his father wished thathis son should become a lawyer and move to Luz Church Road,Mylapore where top lawyers lived in their bungalows and gardenhouses! But GNB had already made up his mind to be a professionalperforming musician.

Indeed he took his bow in 1928 by singing at the Kapaleeswarartemple in Mylapore. It was a raving debut. He had received trainingunder the noted violinist Karur Chinnaswami Iyer and MaduraiSubramania Iyer, both neighbours in Triplicane. Besides formaltraining, he had imbibed by sheer mental osmosis by listening to thegreat legends like Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar and MaharajapuramViswanatha Iyer.

Soon his fame began to fan out fast and ere long he was a much-sought-after performer. His style of singing found increasing favourwith music lovers and a ‘GNB-bani’ emerged. And, lo, GNB, the legendwas born …..

Not surprisingly Tamil cinema spread out the red carpet to theresplendent rising star and a Coimbatore-based film producer, A. N.Maruthachalam Chettiar first signed GNB for his movie. Affection-ately known as ‘Chellam’, he had promoted a film company, ‘ChellamTalkies’ in association with his pals like the textile mill owner andmoneybag of Kovai, P. S. Sathappa Chettiar. Its first venture was‘ Bhama Vijayam’ , a mythological about Lord Krishna, Sathyabhamaand Rukmini.

To direct the movie, the Hollywood-trained filmmaker Manik LalTandon was engaged and, since he knew no Tamil, the Coimbatore-lawyer- turned-filmmaker C. K. Sachi was brought in to assist him.Popular stage stars P. S. Ratna Bai, P. S. Saraswathi Bai (known as‘Palayamkottah Sisters’ or ‘Bai Sisters’) and M.R. Krishnamurthywere fixed to play Rukmini, Sathyabhama and Krishna respectively.(Krishnamurthi wasMaharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer’s younger brother and notedstage and screen star of his day.)

It was to play as Sage Narada that GNB was brought in. He wasdescribed in the posters, hand-bills and song books of ‘BhamaVijayam’ as ‘Hutchins Gramophone Plate Fame Sangeetha Vidwan’as he was the first recognized Carnatic musician to act in cinema.(Hutchins was a gramophone record producing company of yester-years which had on its rolls prominent artistes to sing for it.Gramophone records were then colloquially called ‘plates’.)

‘Bhama Vijayam’, produced at a cost of Rs. 80,000, collected overRs. 10 lakhs at the box office, an incredible megabuck in the 1930s!Like most Tamil films of the day, it too had as many as 59 songs! GNBsang eight of them in the classic ragas Atana, Sahana, SindhuBhairavi, Thodi, Senjurutti, Yadukulakambhodhi, Hindolam andHamsanandhi. Interestingly Narada sang ‘Balakanakamaya’ inraga Atana and ‘ Koti nadhulu in raga Thodi, compositions of SaintThyagaraja Swamigal, as duets with Lord Krishna! That was not all.In the end, all characters in the movie sang in chorus ‘Jana GanaMana’! Anachronism? Maybe, but nobody cared a damn. Surelythose were the days!
