NO HOLDS BARREDDon’t fly

Air Asia with 162 on board took off from Surakaya inIndonesia and, as though to give a fitting finale to the olddoddering 2014with a brine bath before landing in Singapore, took a dive and is yet to surface.

The presumption is that the plane has crashed and founda grave hitherto unknown to have existed, big enough toswallow the huge plane. Man proposes, plane disposes! Thescheduled 3-hour flight becomes a flight to eternity.

Shashi Tharoor’s famous jibe of the ‘cattle class’ ofIndian Railways is the best defense against these jetdeaths. Don’t be air-borne!

The March 8, 2014 crash of Malaysian Airlines thatkilled 239 in the Indian Ocean is still a mystery and thesearch promises to be eternal, unless a super brain withclaims to a Nobel Prize makes an invention of a device thathunts the ocean for putrefying human bodies. Otherwisethe globe, which is three-fourth water, will beat us everytime there is a plane in the sea.

I have no faith in this mode of travel. Why do you wantto defy the laws of physics and bore your way throughsomething you can’t even see?

These machines that you trust life with are made byMAN, the fallible fellow to break nature and, once in a while, nature says,” I will show you” and goes berserk. Nothinglike being on terra firma.

I have flown only 5 times, and that too short distances, and hated every minute of the flights, not because ofclaustrophobia, but an innate respect for the ‘Grand Maker’who concocted the best ingredients to make life beautifulon earth. Flight is not one of them!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, Thick bolts are protruding dangerously from the surfaceof the road close to the existing median at the entrance ofAranganathan Subway (Govindan Road) on Saidapet side. The bolts which are invisible, especially during dark hours posea danger to motorists. The bolts have been installed to extendthe median. The entrance to the subway is already narrow andis used by both 2-wheelers and 4-wheelers. Extending themedian would further narrow the width causing trafficcongestion. Additionally, the nearby shopkeepers park theirvehicles near the entrance further narrowing the alreadycongested road or blocking it. I appeal to the authorities toremove the bolts immediately and give up the idea of widening/lengthening the median any further. – Krishvanth, T. Nagar.

Protruding iron bolts pose danger to motorists

Enforce stricter measures to preventre-encroachment

Sir, This refers to the eviction drive by Chennai Corporationon Dec. 26 to remove about 120 roadside encroachments fromUsman Road. While this action needs to be lauded, theirresponsibility does not cease here. It has often happened in thepast that within a few weeks of such an action, theencroachments often resurface. It should be ensured that itdoes not happen again by enforcing stricter measures. TheCorporation should continue such operations on a war footingand rid all the roads and the pavements in the city ofencroachments. The judiciary too should not blindly give stayorders based on petitions filed by the encroachers. Such is thecase with 131 shops on Usman Road which continue to be aheadache for the Corporation. I hope the Corporation officialsare taking up the matter actively to vacate the stay. Some ofthe streets where encroachments continue are Usman Road,Ranganathan Street, Railway Border Road and Arya GowdaRoad, to name a few. – T. Nagar Residents’ WelfareAssociation, 30, Rangan Street

Widening roads is a better solution thanconstructing narrow flyovers

Sir, During the Chennai Corporation Council meet heldrecently, Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy had announced thathenceforth, the civic body will give priority to widening roadsrather than building flyovers to decongest the roads. It isindeed an epoch-making resolution! Most of the major roads inChennai are too narrow and the existing flyovers have noteased traffic congestion in anyway. The classic example isUsman Road flyover. One hopes that the Corporation does notsway from the decision and takes the logical step to first ridpavements and road margins of encroachments. The‘Encroachment Nagar’, as T. Nagar is popularly referred to byits residents, will benefit immensely from this decision. –V.S.Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Appeal to relocate Lake View Road ration shopSir, The Ration shop HC009 which is in a dilapidated condition

was to be shifted to a new location on Lake View Road. However, the decision was rescinded at the last minute andcards were allotted to a nearby ration shop. This has burdenedthe consumers as the shop is not able to handle the additionalquota and they are forced to stand in long queues. I appeal tothe authorities to find a new location for the shop HC009instead of merging it with an existing shop. – T. G.Badrinarayanan, 4, Duraisamy Road, T. Nagar

New Yearcelebrations inChennai passpeacefully barringminor accidentsBy Our Staff Reporter

The celebrations in the cityincluding the neighbourhood tousher in the New Year wererelatively peaceful barring afew incidents. At least 300people were reported injured inminor accidents, mostly oninterior roads, in Chennai andits suburbs, while threepersons were killed.

There were huge crowds inthe popular neighbourhoodtemples which remained openfor New Year.

More than 18,000 policepersonnel, including seniorofficers, were deployed in thecity to ensure there were nountoward incidents.

Some laxity was showntowards drunken driving unlikethe other days. As in previousyears, the city’s beaches werethe most popular haunts. Itwas estimated that more than7 lakh partied into the weehours at the city beaches. 4.5tonnes of garbage wasgenerated and Marina Beachand 2.5 tonnes at Elliot’s Beachin a single night.

A constable stationed atPothy’s junction said that whilefamilies were enjoying NewYear together, he and manyothers like him in the force wereensuring their safety. “Weexchanged New Year wisheswith one another and with ourfamilies over cell phones,” headded.

Further to the announce-ment by Chennai Corporationthat it will give priority to widenroads instead of constructingflyovers, T. Nagar Residents’Welfare Association hasappealed to start the exercisefrom T. Nagar as it is the mostcongested and encroachedupon commercial/residentialhub in Chennai.

In a letter addressed to theMayor, V.S. Rangan Street and Rames-waram Road to take circuitousroutes. In case of anemergency, ambulances andfire tenders find it difficult toapproach/enter these streets.

He has further written thatthe margins of RanganathanStreet, Railway Border Roadand streets abutting UsmanRoad have also been encroa-ched upon. Because of itsproximity to the railwaystation and bus stand,Ranganthan Street is alwayscrowded even on normal days.To make matters worse, notonly the vendors/hawkers buteven the commercialestablishments have usurpedthe public place.
