NO HOLDS BARRED

The captive snail ridden by a fat Ambedkar needed a few juicylashes by the trim Nehru. Friend Shankar, snooping for anevening fix of fun, couldn’t resist the flagellation scene that oozedinto his brush or pen to tickle the ribs of a million Shankarites thenext week. I remember laughing at that cartoon in ‘Shankar’sWeekly’ until I soaked a towel with tears of joy.

The 5-volume “Constituent Assembly Debates”, published by“Lok Sabha Secretariat”, tell the great billion-plus citizens howthey are free to do anything they think is good, which philosophyis the genesis of the potpourrie that we find in Parliament or anylawmaking body. Nobody is laughing now because the concentra-tion is on moneymaking which is a very serious service to nationbuilding .

A recent cartoon depicted the birth of Emergency, inwhich President Fakruddin Ali Ahmed, from his bath tub, is seensigning the death warrant of democracy without being privy towhat he was signing, until he saw in the papers the next day thathe had indeed become Hitler II .

I think that it was around this time that I started writing myskits for Shankar’s Weekly. The weekly wait was worth it be-cause, to appear in the magazine of fun along with the famouscartoonist was, to my mind, the greatest achievement in my lifeuntil then.

With scams collaring legislative time and the brood of Birbal,Thenali Raman and the like having vanished with the bad oldempires, Shankaran Pillai, Abu Abraham, Thaanu, R. K. Laxman,Miranda, O. V. Vijayan, Keshav, Ravishankar and a chap namedSadanand (who writes nonsense inspired by the greats of yore P.G. Wodehouse, Art Buchald, and similar tribe) threw a littlesunshine in our politics-polluted atmosphere!

Shankar, even the snail has its day!
