    Chariots of Fire

Can you recall the theme music from Chariots of Firebeingused at this years Olympics and Paralympics? The filmincluded the story of Eric Liddell. He was a committed

Christian who refused to race on a Sunday andconsequently withdrew from the 100 metres, his bestevent, at the 1924 Paris Olympics. He was also entered for the 400metres, a race for which he had not trained and which he was notexpected to win. However, he not only won it but broke the worldrecord. During the race he had carried a piece of paper containingwords God spoke to Eli: "Those who honour me I will honour." 1Samuel 2:30.

This month we mark Remembrance Sunday and whilst Eric Liddell'sgold medal win in 1924 is well known some people may not knowthat he died as a prisoner of war in a Japanese prison camp in 1945.

Eric was born in China to Scottish missionary parents, and studiedpure science at Edinburgh University. There he was known as theFlying Scotsman because he excelled in athletics and played rugbyfor the Scottish national team. He was also well known as a preacher

and spent much time with young people teaching them how to followJesus Christ and live the Christian life-style.

Returning to China in 1925, he worked tirelessly for the poor and forthe education of children. In 1941 he was interned at Weifang by theJapanese and became a leader at the camp where even fellowmissionaries had become discouraged and selfish. In spite of muchsuffering he helped the elderly, taught Bible classes and arrangedgames and science lessons for the children, who referred to him asUncle Eric. After the War American Langdon Gilkey wrote:He wasoverflowing with good humour and love for life, and with enthusiasmand charm. It is rare indeed that a person has the good fortune tomeet a saint, but he came as close to it as anyone I have everknown. The prisoner-of-war camp at Weifang is now a place oflearning for Chinese teenagers. Because he was born in China, somepeople regard him as the first Chinese Olympic gold medallist. "It isnot a joke," said Wang Hao, Weifang's director of foreign affairs. "Weare very proud of Mr Eric Liddell. He is a hero".

    Christian greetings,

    Prayer and Reflection

Text for the month Psalm 23 vv. 4, 64 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,

I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod andyour staff, they comfort me6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me allthe days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever..

    The NIV Bible

    Prayer for the Month

Loving God, in this month of remembrance we realise the horror ofwar and we pay tribute to those who have died that we might live infreedom. We are reminded how easy it is to speak of peace and howdifficult it is to pursue it. It sounds straightforward to talk of breakingdown barriers but it is so stressful to live as peacemakers. You teachus to live to heal wounds rather than create them that we might uniterather than divide, reconcile rather than separate.

Rescue us from all that keeps us apart, give us a new spirit of loveand openness, acceptance and understanding. May the peace we prayfor begin here and now in our hearts, and may we be instruments ofyour peace working for harmony in our lives and between nations.

In Jesus name we pray. Amen

NWRs last meeting of the year was a book reviewevening. It is interesting to hear about which books members have

read and enjoyed, and can therefore recommend. We may then beinspired to read something different. Two completely different booksgave us a flavour of the history of the Orient. One was Sea of Poppiesby Amitav Ghosh which starts in India in the 1830s, against thebackground of the opium trade between the East India Company andChina. It describes how a variety of people meet on a ship, and theevents which occurred during their voyage. The other was Gweilo byMartin Booth, an autobiography describing his childhood in Hong Kongin the 1950s. The book is highly evocative, giving a snapshot of oldHong Kong through his eyes as a child, his adventures and therelationship he had with his parents, much of which is very amusing.

Family tragedies featured as a genrenot to everyones taste, but cangive an insight into the suffering of others. Journey to the Heart byMelody Beattie is the daily meditations of the author when she took ayear off to travel round the USA after the death of her young son. Not

morbid or depressing, the book has given solace to others. Mercy byJodi Picoult is set in a small town in New Hampshire. A man kills histerminally ill wife; should he be charged with her murder? The story isinterwoven with Scottish history.

There were several historical books. Shackletons Boat Journey by F.A.Worsley was chosen for its beautifully written account of the famousexpedition to the Antarctic on the Endurance which became crushed byice and resulted in an amazing journey for the crew as they battled for

survival. That Woman by Anne Sebba is a biography of WallisSimpson who was once the most reviled figure in Britain. It is aninteresting account of her early life, her previous marriages and the lifeshe led in exile with David (King Edward VIII), who abdicated in favourof his younger brother George VI in order to marry her. Singled Outby Virginia Nicholson is the story of the thousands of women leftunmarried after the First World War, the lives they led and theiroccupations.

These were just a selection of the books we discussed. The nextmeeting is a music evening.

A view from the Borough Council

    Councillor Ranil Jayawardena

    E: [email protected] | T: 01256 322207 | W: tellRanil.com | @CllrRanil

In the last month the Council has been focusing on moving theplanning process forward. As I said last month, there is a debate overthe number of houses to be built across the Borough up to 2029. Thelower the number across the Borough, the fewer the houses to be builtin each community. It is important to have a sound plan in placeotherwise developers will have free reign. The SHLAA (see October

Link) will begin a debate about where housing should go I want tosee the lowest number possible in our villages. However, do let meknow your thoughts.

As Deputy Leader of the Council, with specific responsibility for theCouncils long-term strategy, I was delighted with the announcementmade by Local Government Secretary, Eric Pickles MP, to providefunding to help local authorities in England freeze council tax for a

third consecutive year. The administration of which I am part hadalready driven through further efficiency savings locally to continue thefreeze on council tax in the year ahead. Of course, this all relies onproper financial management of the Council, which allows us to investfor the long term. For instance we are now able to help first timebuyers on to the housing ladder locally, in market homes rather than

    affordable homes.

Eric Pickles also announced new powers for councils to issueTemporary Stop Notices which will stop unauthorised travellerdevelopments in their tracks. These new powers will be a help inpreventing illegal encampments but I am also asking for a local reviewof police powers to tackle trespass on land under existing legislation, and for a new Borough-wide byelaw to be considered.

More detailed updates on these and other matters on my website

(www.tellRanil.com) and, if I can help in any way, please do nothesitate to contact me.

    The Unknown Warrior

Every November, at the mourning ofthe year, I place a cross in the Field ofRemembrance outside Westminster

Abbey in honour of my Great Uncle, who was killed at Gallipoli. I then takethe opportunity to visit the tomb of theUnknown Warrior in WestminsterAbbey, a salutary experience.

I would wish to share with you theevents that culminated in this

expression of collective grief. The ideawas conceived by the Reverend DavidRailton MC, an Army chaplain, who in1916 saw a grave marked with a roughcross and the pencil inscription AnUnknown British Soldier of the BlackWatch. In 1920 he proposed to the Dean of Westminster that anunidentified British Soldier, buried in the battlefields of France, should

be reburied in Westminster Abbey to represent the many hundreds ofthousands of Empire dead from the Great War. The idea foundsupport from the Dean and the Prime Minister, David Lloyd George.

And so four suitable sets of remains were exhumed from the FrenchBattlefields - the Aisne, Somme, Arras and Ypres and brought to thechapel at Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise near Arras on the night of 7thNovember 1920.

Brigadier General Wyatt (commander of British troops in France andFlanders) and Colonel Gell (from the Directorate of Graves) went intothe Chapel alone. The remains were on stretchers covered with UnionJacks. General Wyatt, with closed eyes, selected one of the of thebodies by resting his hand on it. The anonymity of the chosen bodywas assured. It was placed in a sealed coffin, and the other bodieswere reburied with full honours.

The next day the dead soldier began his journey to Westminster

Abbey. The coffin was taken to Boulogne and placed inside a casket,

    29/56

    Page 29

which had been made of oak timber from Hampton Court and had theinscription A British Warrior who fell in the Great War 1914-1918 forKing and Country.

Surmounting this casket was a sixteenth century sword, given by King

George V. The destroyer HMS Verdun, escorted by six otherdestroyers, carried the body to Dover, landing on the 10th November. The casket was then transferred to a train which carried it to VictoriaStation, where it arrived at platform 8 at 8:32 pm that evening. Itremained there overnight (a plaque at the station marks the site)

On the morning of 11th November 1920, the casket was drawn by theRoyal Horse Artillery to the Cenotaph(Greek for empty tomb). This new warmemorial in Whitehall had beendesigned by Sir Edwin Lutyens and wasunveiled by the King-Emperor George Vfollowing the arrival of the cortge, which then continued to WestminsterAbbey. The casket was borne into thewest nave flanked by a guard ofhonour of one hundred recipients ofthe Victoria Cross. The guests ofhonour were some one hundredwomen, who had lost their husbandsand all of their sons in the war. Thecasket was then interred a few feetfrom the entrance of the western endof the nave. Servicemen from the

armed forces stood guard as anestimated 1,250,000 filed silently pastin just the first week. The ceremony seems to have served as acatharsis of collective mourning unknown on any previous scale. Thegrave was then capped with a black marble stone from Belgium, withlettering was made from melted down brass cartridge cases from thewar.

If you get the chance, do visit this tomb. Ask the gatekeepers if you

can briefly stand at the grave; they are generally most obliging.

    Director - Nicholas Woods

Rehearsals are now in the final stages for our firstconcert in this special anniversary year (details below).Preparations include attending a workshop in Salisbury hosted by BobChilcott which will reinforce our interpretation of his Requiem Mass. The music has presented the choir with a different challenge ofancient and modern in terms of text and score which we have verymuch enjoyed. As always, we are fortunate to be supported by topclass musicians and soloists and look forward to a memorable

    evening.Autumn Concert Programme

    Requiemby Bob Chilcott

    Mass in Blueby Will Todd

Will Todds ambitious and exciting setting of the Latin mass bringstogether real jazz themes and improvisations in concert with the Latinmass text. The piece skilfully features harmonic exchanges betweenthe soprano and piano soloist who are supported by a strong choralfoundation - a very impressive and energised interpretation.

Customer Metering Programme comes to Sherfield-

    on-Loddon

The installation of water meters in Sherfield (part ofSouth East Waters long term plan to manage watersupplies) is now likely to take place in late November

    or early December.

In most cases the meter will be installed on the external stop tap whichis normally found in the footpath at the boundary of the property, andthere will be little disruption. In a very small number of cases (forexample if you live in a block of flats or share supplies) the meter mayneed to be installed inside - often under the kitchen sink.

If you would like further information about the metering programme,

advice on water efficiency or details of financial support available, please visit www.southeastwater.co.ukor call the metering helpline on0333 000 0003.
