T he dark evenings and shorter days are hereagain but spare a thoug ht for the 33 Chileanminers, who were trapped over 2,000ftunderground on 5th August this year for 69 days.

Darkness for them will have a different meaningfrom nights drawing in. The temporary townbuilt around their rescue shaft for rescuers, families and journalists became known as CampHope for it was hope that kept them alive. A key factor in the survival of these men was the support given byth ose on th e surface: politicians, celebrities, colleagues, doctors and,

of course, family and friends who kept in touch.People often use the word hope in place of luck but the two wordsare very different. Luck is to do with random happenings andsuperstition, whereas hope is based upon certainty and confidencethat there is something better to come. Without hope the heartfades away but that was certainly not the case with the Chileanminers. Their hope had been growing daily, not because theircircumstances had improved, but because they knew that they hadnot been forgotten. They had confidence that there was a future,

they w ere given hope.Recently, I phoned a person Id been thinking about, in fact, Id beenpraying and they came to mind. Their response was quiteunexpected and not in accordance with how I see myself: You are like an angel. I needed to hear an encouraging voice, and youve rung . They were going through their own dark time and it just sohappened t hat I called t o see how t hey were.We all need hope, without it life fails: the abused, the betrayed, thebereaved, the lonely, the unemployed, the bullied, the anxioussomewhere, at some time, were on the list.Who brought you h ope when you n eeded it? How can you bring hopeto ot hers? What is your hope now ?The Christian message is all about hope, hope given to us by Godhim self in send ing Jesus, his Son. Let m e leave you w ith t his blessingwritten by the Apostle Paul: May the God of hope fill you with all

joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We see so m uch t hat challenges andseems to contr adict our faith so that at t im es, despiteourselves, our t rust is underm ined and our confidenceshaken. Help us to hold on t o you as you hold on t o us. Teachus that doubts and questions are part of faith , able to lead usto new insight s. further disturb ed when a youngrich studen t, Helen Rollander, takes on private lessons with t heprofessor.

A full house seated round t ables, welcom ed th e cast on stag e. Theset design and opening quickly drew t he audience into th e world ofthe late 1930s and the German accents of the Professor and familyhelped highlight t heir refugee background. The first act introducedand developed the characters with the t wist developing on thetheme of bribery and corruption. There was some fine acting fromth e cast part icularly t he Professor.

In scene 2 t he pace picked up an d revealedHelens unrequited love fort he professor whichultimately led, much to t heaudiences surprise, to the

Are you seriously suggest ing?Thought s on faith from David Fright

J ohn Williams once said during a sermon that faith shouldnt bean intellectual exercise. In my experience it very often ends upbeing just t hat. Althoug h every now and th en som ethinghappens that cuts through it all and helps me see th ings in a clearway. The following is one such incident. To be honest it isnt muchof a story. The pu nch line, if it can be called t hat is short and m aynot be original. Still, when I look back over forty years and th inkthroug h t he event s of that Friday afternoon I always sm ile. Somaybe it is worth sharing

A friend of m ine asked if I would like t o t ake his Saturdaym orning job at t he Rectory. Four hours of gardening for t enshillings and no I didnt have to go to church.

Since the end of t he last war our society has become m ore & m oreegalitarian. Today m any of u s look upon h ead t eachers, priests, solicitors & hospital consultant s in m uch t he same way as thepostman or plumber. Its usually a temporary need for their serviceswhich enhances their perceived imp ortance. Forty years ago it wasvery differen t . Deference was alive and well. Priests wereuniversally held in high regard and direct cont act unu sual.Consequent ly th e prospect of a fourteen year old agnostic from a

council estat e m eeting th e Rector of a count ry p arish w as slight. Ieven had an appointm ent ! Not that it helped. I approached theRectory w ith a feeling of unsuitability. As I walked onto t he driveway h e came around the corner of th ehouse. He looked abou t sevent y five, five feet six inches tall, had acrew cut an d was wearing a casual short sleeve shirt an d a pair ofshorts and pum ps. He carried a cigarette in one h and and t wo t abletennis bats in the other. You must be Dave? Yes Sir I replied. I willgive you a gam e of Table Tennis. If you w in you g et a t anner if youlose you get a tanning. Yes Sir. I followed h im with nat ural subservience along th e side of th e

house, past the vegetab le garden and t here t o a large single storybuilding. It turned out to be the Church Hall or to be precise TheEmily Jubb Church Hall. I never found out who she was. As wewalked in I noticed that th ere were toilets to t he left and a kitchento th e right, then onto a m eeting room which was dominated at i tscentre by a table tenn is table.

I had a natural respect for this seventy five year old priest butwinning w as everyt hing. There would be no deliberate m issing ofthe ball or pretence of not being able to return it wit h any effect. I

would politely grind him down unt il he was obliged to retire. In t heevent he did n ot m ove and I was forced t o explore every inch of th eroom t rying t o retrieve t he ball. I lost badly and w as spared th etanning.I followed him back to t he house and t hrough a side door to hisstud y which gave good views to t he rear of the garden and thenonto a cricket field and beyond t hat t o the church which was m adeof stone. It had a small t ower and as I later found out itsconstruct ion start ed in the early thirteent h century.I got t o know him very w ell over the next few years. His face usuallylooked stern and crusty and rem inded m e of Noel Coward on adifficult day. It hindered m any from t rying to engage with him ,which was a pity , because he was always entert aining, a greatdebat er who possessed a trem endou s sense of hum our.I and some of the local male parishioners used Emilys facilitiesm ost Fridays and would t hen retire t o his stud y for d rinks andconversation. It w as dur ing one of t hese that he expr essed hisdism ay at having t o spend his Saturday afternoons with t heSaturday Crowd as he called them. Its one of the few disadvantages of having a beautiful old churchhe groaned. He held inter views for t he Satu rday Crowd on Tuesday evening s. Onone occasion I found m yself in the Rectory durin g one of t hesesessions. I m ade m yself useful by an swering t he front door andoffering t he young couple a seat on a pew in t he hallway. I did t hison tw o m ore occasions and t hen informed all three couples th at Iwould let the Rector know they had all arrived. I th ink word mu sthave got around because th ey all looked terrified. I entered th estud y t o give him th e good news and asked if I should offerrefreshments. He didnt say anything or even move but the answerwas clear and t here would be no w ashing up . He eventually stood, picked up his diary and pen from t he desk and m oved to t hehallway and invited th e first of th e three to th e dinning room. After about forty m inutes he returned to th e stu dy, dropped th ediary and pen onto t he desk and flopped onto t he leath er cushion ofa carver chair. While stroking the wooden arms he said Its anonsense! I ask them why t hey want t o get m arried and all th ey dois look at the walls, floor and ceiling and m um ble, trying t o saysom eth ing I migh t like t o hear, usually wit hout success. All th eyhave to do is say they love each other.Glass of wine? No Gin & Tonic

Apart from being a bit of a grum p I found him to be a w onderfulm an and m ore import antly so did his congregation. When we w ereon our own I would often start a conversation about religion He

would always bring him self down to m y level so that I m ightunderstand, but for som e reason he never suggested t hat I m ightlike to attend one Sunday morning. Our relationship grew and Ifelt privileged t hat I could spend t ime w ith a Rector who t reated m et he sam e as anyon e else and someon e who I could ask anyquestion. This belief alm ost turn ed out to be a terrible m istake. And so it was, one Friday lunch time on a fine summers day Ah come in my son. Youre just in time for the last overs beforelunch. Is Boycot t st ill in? I enq uired .Yes, Boycott is very good at being in. We both w atched as England t ried to score as many runs as th eycould against an Australian t eam lookin g to giv e th e Englishanother bloody nose. The last ball was delivered t o Boycott who h it it six inches into t heground with great purpose and no run. Not t hat t hat m attered toBoycott being in was everything. He decided to facilitate thespectators enthusiastic admiration for his limitless talent bydem onstrat ing th is stroke of genius with an im aginary ball severaltim es. The Umpire offered th e spectat ors an alternat ive occupationby declaring Lunch. Excellent idea replied the Rector and pointed to a pile of newlydelivered brown cardboard packing cases with The Wine Societyprinted on t he sides.Pour me a glass if you will theres some Light Ale in the cupboard

While I was opening t he wine bot tle I thoug ht of Boycott and askedwhy people from Yorkshire always tell you theyre from Yorkshire? I am not sure. Maybe they dont want people to think that theymight be from Lancashire he replied. I served the drinks and wesat b ack in relaxed silence. Then I asked w hat I th ough t t o be astraight forward question. Rector what would you t hink if, when youdied you found out that there w as no God and n o after life? Heimm ediately frowned and looked straight ahead. I had m ade am istake and I knew it. Dee Bulpitt, welcomed everyone to our October Meeting andsaid how nice it was to see so many Members present.Jerusalem was sung and t he Minut es read and signed .

Val Denny mentioned that several people suggested going toChichester for our next t rip. Val said that she would research t hisand, perhaps, combine with a visit to Fishbourne (a Roman Palacewith wonderful mosaics). Evelyn Holdaway gave the TreasurersReport and advised there would be a slight increase in thesubscription for next year. Dee confirm ed that ou r Carol Evening atPamber Place will take place on the 13 t h December at 7.30 p.m.She advised there would not be a walk this m onth. She went on tosay that no nominations had been received for places on theCommittee for our Annual Meeting next month and confirmed thatLois Batting has offered to collect the plastic milk bottles tops forHearing Dogs for Deaf People. The Business Meetin g closed at2.45 p.m .Dee then introduced our speaker, Dr Linette Moss, whose subjectwas Fun in Foreign Fields. Dr Moss was accompanied by herhusband, Mr David Moss, a famous eye surgeon, who kindlyworked the projector. Dr Moss began by telling us that theywere both retired and that she had been a G.P. in Popley for manyyears. After retirem ent t hey decided to go to Bangladesh to helprestore sight to t he blind. In 1991 t hey went w ith a t eam of doctorsand nurses but were met with awful scenarios - the operatingtheatres were filthy, poorly lit (if at all) and any drugs orequipm ent were stolen before th ey could even be used. They feltthat it was an impossible situation the corruption was too much. After they returned, they were asked by a Burmese Eye Surgeon inLondon to go to Burma. This time it was completely different but, unfortunately, Dr Moss wrote an article about human rights abusethere and will never get another visa to enter the country. Theynow work for the Impact Foundation and we were shown manyslides covering their work in Burma and many other countries -India, Kenya, Nepal. Dr Moss said that she socialises while herhusband operates mainly on cataracts. The Foundation runs afloating hospital, has the only operating t rains in t he world, and h asseen an amazing 25 million people already. The vote of thanks wasgiven by Helen Rolton. She also thanked David Moss for saving hersight.NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, 3 RD NOVEMBER 2010 AT 2 P.M.ANNUAL MEETING

    Report by Gill Fearon

    Page 35

To continue wit h our celebrat ion of 50 years of NWR, wedecided to have a 60s m usic night. Last year we had am usic night where we chose music which was associated

wit h m em ories. This was very successful, so the sam e form ulawas adopted this tim e, the only constraint being t hat it had tobe music from t he 60s. When you ment ion 60s m usic, m ostpeople im m ediat ely t hink of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones,Gerry and t he Pacemakers or The Beach Boys, yet there werem any varied artistes t hroughout the decade. Out of about 40choices at our recent m eeting, only one Beatles hit(Yesterday) was played, one Rolling Stones (Jumpin JackFlash) and one Beach Boys (Sloop John B). Some of ourchoices were linked wit h specific m emories like singing in frontof an audience, first boyfriends, getting m arried or, amongstthe younger ones, going to buy the first pop record! This wasa big event in t he 60s as records were relatively expensiveand many listened to music on their trannies! (Transistorradios t o those younger ones! )Who rem em bers Trini Lopez? Many of us had forgot ten him ,but an LP was produced from 1963 showing his sm iling faceand we listened to La Bamba. Then we remembered! Hewas still performing into the noughties. Other singalongs, apart from Cliff, included Delilah by Tom Jones, PrettyWoman by Roy Orbison and Hi Ho Silver Lining by Jeff Beck. There were just t oo many groups played to list here.

Interestingly, the first No. 1 of 1960 was Starry Eyed byMichael Holliday, a popular crooner of the 1950 s, who sadlytook his own life aged 38 in 19 63 and t he last No. 1 of 1969was one which wed prefer to forget: Two Little Boys by Rolf Harris!

It w as a great evening wit h a quiz in the m iddle to test ourknowledge and Im sure we all went home humming a tune!

Our next tw o meetings in Novem ber are a quiz night and abook review evening. We have all been reading The L -ShapedRoom by Lynne Reid Banks, written in 1960 of course!
