“It’s actually very simple to program,” says Kingston. “Tool motion from the turret tooling to the part in the sub-spindle is programmed the same as usual. One code can enable superimposition, so while the turret tooling is machining in the main spindle, the sub-spindle’s programming is slaved relative to the turret, allowing two simultaneous operations on entirely different geometry.”

“The impressive multi-tasking provided by the superimposition function made me want the Miyano BNA-42MSY. Once I saw how easy it was to understand and program, it was a no-brainer,” Kingston said.

Mark Kingston credits his L. G. Evans & Company representative, Jason VanCauwenberge, with finding just the right machine for their needs at Boltswitch. “At first, we were looking for an ordinary production turret-type machine to fit our floorspace. While Jason could have been satisfied with our request and provided a more standard machine, he took the time to dig deeper into our specific needs. We had limited space and some very specific parts that we needed to produce in large quantities.

“The Miyano BNA-42MSY is just the right size for us, not only in physical size, but also in capacity and capabilities,” reports Kingston. “Limited floor space was a big concern for us, and we ended up with a machine that makes better parts and more of them in less time.

“The machine and 6’ bar feeder slipped right into the tight floorspace we had planned for this machine. It’s as if the area was designed for this compact machine. A 6’ bar feeder is two feet longer than we had hoped for in our tight space. That means we can handle barstock more efficiently and we end up with less scrap material.

“Right size also refers to the capacity and capability. I’m referring to the bar diameter, the travels, and the single-turret design,” says Kingston. The 1-⅝” diameter bar capacity comfortably fits all our needs. The axis travels are compact, yet more than adequate for our current and projected needs. This means we don’t waste precious cycle time approaching or retracting from our parts. In spite of its compact size, the machine is very heavily built, so it is strong and rigid. This means we can better optimize our speeds and feeds for faster cuts, better finish, and noticeably longer tool life.
