The holidays are here and the year is almost over. It ’s strange to think that last year around this time we were dreading entering 2009 with all the talk of the economy only getting worse. Well, now it seems we are over that hump and some of the fog has cleared and we see our bright future ahead.

This holiday season we were inspired by the stories of how a rough time in our world has shown us The True Meaning of the Holidays. I guess you can call it the silver lining in all this turmoil that we have experienced the past few years. Because of the lack of means, we’ve been forced to live a less materialistic lifestyle, which in my opinion isn’t such a bad thing. We have become such a material and ownership based society that we tend to forget what is really important. We seem to have lost our focus and purpose, and forgotten that in the end it won’t matter if you have the latest iPhone or the fastest car. What matters is how many times you said “I love you” to the person on the other end of that phone or the laughs you had with your friends while driving in that car. When you really analyze it, do you really need either of those material things to experience love or laughter? Make this holiday season the best one of all. Instead of giving the latest gadget, or expensive clothes to your loved ones, how about you give a great experience along with it. Show them and tell them how much they are appreciated. A simple phone call could brighten up someone’s day. A hug lasts forever. What they will remember most is how you made them feel in that moment, not how many songs their new iPod can hold. Besides there will probably be a new iPod coming out the following month and they will forget all about the one they got at Christmas. Happy Holidays to you, and your family. God Bless!

Las festividades Navideñas han llegado y este año ya esta por terminar. Hace un año, estábamos con mucha angustia para entrar al 2009 con todos los medios diciendo que la economía empeorará. Ahora parece que estamos en un lugar mejor y se puede ver un futuro brillante.

Esta temporada no inspiraron las historias de como este tiempo difícil en el mundo nos ha enseñado Lo Que Significan las Festividades de Diciembre. Tal vez sea la lucecita positiva en toda esta oscuridad que hemos sufrido estos últimos años. Por falta de recursos, nos vemos forzados a cambiar nuestra vida materialista, que en mi opinión es algo bueno. Nos hemos convertido en un mundo tan materialista y basado en posesiones que se nos olvida lo que mas importa. Parece que hemos perdido nuestro enfoque y propósito, y se nos olvida que al fin de todo no importa si tiene el iPhone mas nuevo o el carro mas rápido. Lo que importa es cuantas veces dijo “ te quiero” a la persona al otro lado del recibidor o las risas que tuvo con amigos dentro de ese carro, y si en lo analiza mas, ¿Es necesario tener esas cosas materiales para amar o reír? Haga esta temporada la mejor de todas. En vez de regalar lo mas nuevo que hay en las tiendas, o ropa cara a sus seres queridos ¿porque no mejor regala una buena experiencia? Dígales y demuéstreles cuanto los aprecia. Una simple llamada puede iluminar el día de uno de sus seres queridos. Un abrazo dura para siempre. Lo que recordaran mas es como los hizo sentir en ese momento, no cuantas canciones caben en su iPod nuevo. De todos modos, habrá un iPod nuevo en un par de meses y se olvidaran el que recibieron como regalo de navidad. Felices fiestas a usted y su familia. ¡Dios los Bendiga!

THE GIFT OFGRATITUDE

LA GRATITUD ES UN REGALOBy Mayor Rocha

The end of 2009 is rapidly approaching; soon we will be immersed in preparing for the Christmas Season and the upcoming New Year, and even though it has been a difficult year in many respects, we should be grateful with life for many reasons.

Most of us wish to project our well being. This task goes beyond the appearance of perfection; it consists of accomplishing internal harmony,

being satisfied with our accomplishments, and in celebrating the opportunity of a new day to be with the ones we love so much; to work in order to give life to those goals and dreams that we desire.

If you have not given yourself the opportunity to evaluate all the blessings that life has given you, but quite the opposite you only think of the things you have not accomplished, which in itself takes away from the former, then you can’t feel whole and that prevents you from being happy and affects all those who love you. Surprise them by not complicating life thinking of ways to achieve perfection. The fact is that your friends and family are always eager to be with you.

Make the time to stop and reflect even for just a few minutes. Write down everything that is important in your life and which when combined makes your existence an act of fullness. For each one of the following that you have and are able to provide to your family, give yourself a point:

• A warm and comfortable home that protects you from the elements every day.

• Plenty of food so that you never go hungry.

• Comfortable clothing selected to your liking to cover yourself.

• A job that makes you feel satisfied and which allows you to afford your needs.

• A partner that cares for you and makes you happy.

• A family that supports you.

• Good physical and mental condition.

• The opportunity to dream and plan wishes until you accomplish them.

• Intelligence to learn and solve any conflict.

• The gift of memory, which allows you to maintain close to your heart any loved person that for whatever reason is no longer next to you.

This exercise is the pattern to rediscover the motive we need to consider ourselves fortunate. Keep this list close to you, and remember it every time you feel life is unjust.

El fin del 2009 se acerca rápidamente; pronto estaremos preparando para la época Navideña y el Año Nuevo. Aunque ha sido un año muy difícil en muchos aspectos, debemos ser agradecidos con la vida por muchas razones.

La mayoría de nosotros deseamos demostrar nuestro bienestar. Esto va mas allá de la apariencia; consiste de obtener armonía interna, estar satisfechos con nuestros logros, y celebrar la oportunidad de un nuevo día para estar con los que amamos más. También trabajar para darle vida a esas metas que tenemos.

Si no se ha dado la oportunidad de evaluar todas las bendiciones que la vida le ha dado, si hace lo opuesto y solo piensa en las cosas que no ha logrado, eso es lo que hará que se sienta incompleto, evitara que aprecie lo que tiene y afectara ha todos sus seres queridos. No complique su vida pensando en maneras de lograr la

perfección. La verdad es que su familia y amigos siempre estarán a su lado.

Tome el tiempo para reflejar aunque sea solo por un par de minutos. Escriba en un papel todo lo que es importante en su vida y lo que hace que su vida se sienta completa. Para cada una de las siguientes cosas que usted le ha dado a su familia, dese un punto:

• Un hogar cómodo que los protege de los elementos todos los días.

• Comida suficiente para que nunca pasen hambre.

• Ropa cómoda a su gusto para cubrirse.

• Un trabajo que lo hace sentir satisfecho y que le permite obtener sus necesidades.

• Alguien quien lo hace sentir feliz.

• Una familia que le apoya.

• Salud física y mental.

• La oportunidad de planear sus sueños hasta que los logre.

• Inteligencia para aprender y resolver cualquier conflicto.

• El regalo de recuerdos, que permite mantener a todos sus seres queridos junto a usted para siempre.

Este ejercicio le ayudara a sentirse afortunado. Mantenga esta lista cerca de usted, y remuérdela cuando se sienta como que la vida es injusta.

Some movies provoke the mind and intellect and keep audiences thinking long after they have left the theater. Add The Road to that list. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Cormac McCarthy, Australian director John Hillcoat’s The Road is a starkly

told post-apocalyptic tale about an unnamed father and son traveling across an America given to roving bands of murderous groups and individuals all in search of the barest human necessities.

Set in the near future, The Road concerns a wholly righteous and doting father, played by Viggo Mortensen, caring for his young son after a worldwide cataclysm which has left buildings standing, but has laid waste all animals and crops. Partially told in flashback sequences where Mortensen and his wife (Charlize Theron) are leading an idyllic farming life before the catastrophe, The Road is equal parts love story, travelogue, and tense drama as the abandoned father and son try to reach the ocean in hopes of a better life.

The film is far from an action-adventure story and is more metaphoric for many modern issues. “It was really the reality of the book: having all of your possessions in a shopping trolley conjured images of the homeless in every city,” Hillcoat said. “That made it stand apart from the normal apocalyptic genre. It felt weirdly familiar, like we had already glimpsed it because our references were apocalyptic mini-events such as Mt. St. Helens, the Twin Towers, Hiroshima, Katrina or wherever. It’s not on a global scale but may as well be if you are in the middle of it.”

Hillcoat carefully selected several critical sites throughout the United States for his shooting locations. “It’s a road trip, so we wanted the change of geography,” he said. “Production designer Chris Kennedy has a keen eye and loves research, so we referenced a lot of events such as mining in Pennsylvania and the grey sand in Oregon. It was a matter of making up the world in real environments. It was a creative choice that made it feel free.”

There was actual footage of the Katrina aftermath. We just replaced the sky because we couldn’t have the sun. The mass of smoke billowing up in the background is the actual real footage of the 9/11 smoke tower visible from space. “There were four states that we went into: Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Washington and Oregon,” said Hillcoat. “Many of [the locations] were in and around concentrated areas in Pittsburgh,” said Hillcoat. “It gave it the look, and we were able to do that because of the simplicity of the story.”

Hillcoat wishes that his film affects audiences the same manner in which the book affected him. “It hopefully will make you look at your own relationships and value what we take for granted,” he described. “It’s looking at ourselves and our own relationships and what makes us human at times of duress. It’s very timely in that regard. I hope that it has a lingering effect on people the way the book has.”

Our lord Jesus answered our prayers regarding the $8,000 tax credit extension for first time buyers. If this is not enough, our blessings are spiced by allowing a $6,500 credit for first time, long time homebuyers who purchase a replacement principal residence. However, this extension came with a few restrictions, and modifications.

These modifications are as followed:

• The purchase of the primary residence needs to be in contract prior to April 30TH, 2010, and close escrow on or before June 30, 2010.• Homes in excess of $800,000 do not qualify for Tax Credits.• A closing statement also known as a “Settlement Statement” must be attached to your tax returns.• Purchaser must be at least 18 years old.• Buyers who appear as dependents in others' tax returns are not eligible.• Within this extension the IRS is allowed to deny the first time homebuyer credit claims, without having to first audit a tax-payer return.• Tax credits also come with income limitations.• The credit is claimed using Form 5405.

Jan’s Towing Inc. es un negocio local en el Valle de San Gabriel y ahí ha estado por mas de 30 años. Jan Qualkenbush, el dueño de Jans Towing siempre ha ayudado a la comunidad. Jan’s Towing también les regala los letreros enforzando las reglas del estacionamiento de su negocio.de Jan se dio cuenta de la necesidad de estos servicios a través de su trabajo con Carlos y Joseph Paez. Dos nativos de Azusa que son dueños de Paez Patrol Security, Inc. desde 1993. Jan’s Towing, Inc. is locally owned and operated and has been in business in the San Gabriel Valley for over 30 years. Jan Qualkenbush the owner of Jan’s Towing has always believed in giving back to the community. One way Jan’s Towing, Inc. is giving back to the community is by offering local business the legalized removal of vehicles parked without authorization. Jan’s Towing also provides the parking enforcement signs and their installation for free. Jan became aware of the need for this service through his working relationship Carlos and Joseph Paez. Two Azusa natives who have owned and operated Paez Patrol Security, Inc. since 1993. Both firms follow all Federal, State and Local laws and ordinances and would like to assist Local Businesses in protecting their property from abandoned vehicles. Abandoned vehicles become a nuisance for the property owner as they take up valuable customer parking, collect trash and debris, provide hiding locations for criminal activity, etc.In the past unsuspecting residents may have become victims of tow companies that do not follow the law. Some points residents should know are:

1. Signs have to be posted at all entrances to the property.2. The tow company must have a location within 10 miles of where the vehicle was towed from.3. The registered owner of the vehicle is entitled to a copy of the signed authorization –authorizing the removal of the vehicle by an authorized agent of the property owner.4. The fees charged for towing and storage cannot be more that the rates approved by the local law enforcement agency.5. The towing company must accept Credit Cards and Cash for the towing and storage fees.6. It is illegal for towing companies to patrol a parking lot for unauthorized vehicles.

The relationship between Jan’s Towing, Inc. and Paez Patrol Security, Inc. has added in the cleanup and maintenance of several shopping centers in Azusa and surrounding cities. Paez Security identifies the vehicles that are parked in the shopping centers sometimes for days at a time and after properly warning the vehicle owner with the permission of the property owner they call Jan’s Towing to remove the vehicle. This combined service has contributed to lessen Police assistance calls for abandoned vehicles which frees up our Law Enforcement Officers for more important activities. The legal removal of these vehicles has also aided local law enforcement with the recovery of many stolen vehicles.

You don’t have to look far to notice the degradation of the mountainside. It is visible from miles away, whether traveling on Foothill Freeway during daylight or at night seeing the flickering lights of the quarry. There is a decades old debate over Vulcan Materials operating the rock quarry in the City of Azusa. It is a complex dilemma involving the business operation and the environmental impact on Azusa

and the surrounding cities. What started as a small operation in the 1920’s by Rodeffer Industries, Inc. grew over the years with Owl Rock, Azusa Rock, and presently Vulcan Materials. In its current form, Vulcan has rights to 270 acres to excavate then remove and process rock, sand, and gravel.

In the 1900’s Azusa’s population was 860. Today, the population has grown to over 45,000. It is inevitable that with community growth come many issues of quality of life, such as pollution, traffic, noise, and aesthetics. The challenges for the decision-makers at this juncture is to closely examine the conflict and accordingly balance the needs, interests, and rights of both businesses and residents alike.

The community must decide: Can Vulcan be trusted? Has it been a good neighbor? If so, why has it been so narrowly focused on its rights to mine and not listened to the community? To add to the controversy, Vulcan’s recent desire to expand and move its operation west now exposes Duarte to the same issues in Azusa. This new development makes the Vulcan mining issue a regional one.

To be fair, Vulcan attempted to reach out to the community through “interactive open house” sessions. The problem with its outreach is that it is narrowly focused on their compliance with the minimum legal regulations, and it appeared that most topics were off limits. If a topic was brought up that made Vulcan uncomfortable, no meaningful dialogue occurred and no concrete answers were given. Regardless of what the maps of projected excavation expansion show, they are only projections and will most likely encompass a much larger area creating a much larger mountainside scar.

As we near the hearing process at the beginning of the year, it is important to get involved and voice your concerns about the Vulcan Mining operation. There is ample opportunity to engage and participate in the hearing process.

No tiene que estar muy lejos para darse cuenta del daño a nuestras montañas. Es visible de millas atrás, ya sea que este viajando por la autopista durante el día o viendo las luces de la cantera. Por décadas han tenido un debate sobre Vulcan Materials quien opera la cantera en la Ciudad de Azusa. Es un dilema que involucra su modo de operación y el impacto que hará en el medio ambiente de Azusa y las ciudades que la rodean. Esas nuevas noticias hacen este problema uno regional.

Para ser justos, Vulcan intento comunicarse con la comunidad teniendo sesiones de pregunta y respuesta. El problema con esto era que solo se enfocaron en lo mínimo que podían hacer requerido por las regulaciones, y no quisieron tocar muchos de los temas. Si preguntaban algo que los hiciera sentir incómodos, no contestaban la pregunta. Lo que demuestran los mapas no importa, solo son proyecciones y tal vez incluirá un área más grande creando una cicatriz más grande en nuestra montaña.

Mientras nos cercamos al día de la junta al principio del Nuevo año, es importante involucrarse y dar su opinión sobre la operación de Vulcan Mining. Tendrá mucha oportunidad de participar en la junta.

Hundreds of years ago, the word "holiday" represented the time that men and women ceased working to engage in worship at church. Now, we are accustomed to proclaiming important days, both religious and secular, as holidays. I asked some of my students at Azusa Pacific University, who are studying to become Marriage and Family Therapists, to share their thoughts about the meaning of the holidays at Christmas time. These students work hard at their jobs and support families as they attend graduate school to achieve their dream of helping others through counseling. I believe they embody the season through their words.

"The meaning of the holidays is having the opportunity to give the gift of love and open our hearts to receive the love that others desire to give to us." - Shresia Fontenot-Kenney

As part of the holiday calendar, we commemorate important events including the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the resurrection of Christ at Easter, the sacrifices of our troops on Memorial Day and the independence of our nation on July 4th. We celebrate romance and love on Valentine's Day, harvest and community at Thanksgiving, and we even wear masks at Halloween and embrace our fears of things that howl in the night. We save one of our most important holidays, however, for December 25th, when we recognize the birth of Jesus Christ.

This Christmas, many of us will not experience the same level of prosperity to which we are accustomed. The economy continues to bring hardship to Azusa and, for some, there will be fewer gifts to exchange on Christmas day. The lines at the department stores may seem shorter as we try our best to bring cheer to others. But as the following quote implies, the most sacred gift is not necessarily the one that can be bought or sold.

"Christmas is a time when we celebrate God loving the world so much that He embraced the human condition. We celebrate life, grieve death, and struggle to invite others into this relationship. Our love must extend to those with whom we quarrel and to the poor and destitute. We are reminded that they, too, are just as human and worthy of the gift of God's love." - Vanessa Hughes

Hace mucho tiempo, la navidad representaba los tiempos cuando los hombres y las mujeres dejaban de trabajar para alabar en la Iglesia. Ahora, estamos acostumbrados a darle la misma importancia a cualquier día festivo. Le pregunte a mis estudiantes en Azusa Pacific University, que están estudiando para ser Terapistas Familiarios, que compartieron sus ideas sobre el significado de la Navidad. cosecha y comunidad en el Día de Acción de Gracias, y nos ponemos mascaras en Holloween . Sin embargo, uno de nuestros días mas importantes es el 25 de diciembre, donde reconocemos el día que nació Jesucristo.

Esta Navidad, muchos de nosotros no tendremos lo mismo que acostumbramos cada año. La economía continua a traer dificultados a Azusa y para ciertas personas Habrá menos regalos que intercambiar el 25. Las líneas en las tiendas tal vez estén un poco mas cortas mientras que tratamos de traer felicidad a otros. Pero como dice lo siguiente, el regalo mas sagrado no es necesariamente algo que se puede comprar o vender.

LO QUE SIGNIFICAN LAS FESTIVIDADES DE DICIEMBRE

For many, families are the most important part of the Christmas season. We focus on spending quality time with those we love, some of whom have traveled great distances to see us. If you really think about it, the presents under the Christmas tree may bring excitement for a few weeks but by New Year's Day, most are forgotten. On the other hand, we will remember the time spent with loved ones for years to come. It is sad to think that this may be the last Christmas you or I experience with someone close to us. So by all means, let us make it count!

As a child, I often spent hours near the kitchen smelling the delicious foods my mother and grandmother cooked as part of our holiday meals. It may seem funny, but I believe that food tastes better during the holiday season than at any other time of year. The outside chill somehow brings out the sweet aroma of Christmas ham, turkey, bunuelos, and fresh-baked cookies. This year, let us plan to give an extra word of thanks to all who prepare our wonderful meals. Although you and I are bound to gain a few pounds by the end of the month, we can always go on a diet when the new year begins!

Of course, the Christmas holidays would not be complete without Santa Claus. He brings hope, happiness and love to children of all ages and cultures. It is important to educate our children about his goodness instead of focusing solely on the new toys he carries in his sleigh. The historic trek of Santa on Christmas Eve to distribute gifts far and wide is symbolic of the determination with which we all should pursue our holiday goals, including the following:• Celebrating the importance of Christ in our lives• Being thankful for all that we have and helping others whenever possible• Spending quality time with our families• Cherishing holiday meals and those who cook them• Focusing more on the joys than the toys that Santa Claus brings

As you and I pray for peace on earth and good will toward men this holiday season, let us not forget our men and women in the armed forces who sacrifice their lives each day for the freedom of our country. Our prayers also should include the sick and needy during cold winter times. If you are ready, here is a plan to start the ball rolling:

While reading the story of the Taj Mahal, the mausoleum in India, I was in awe of its origin. An amazing love story about the Emperor Shah Jahan and his love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, with whom he had 14 children with. When she died while giving birth, the Emperor invested more than 20 years building one of the 7 wonders of the modern world as a gift for his beloved wife. All this for love. The biggest love story of all is the one we celebrate this season, Christmas. When GOD gave humanity a gift of love. “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel. (that when translated means God with us).” Isaiah 7:14

Christmas, according to the dictionary is a combination of the words Christ’s Mass. This means that with Christmas begins the deed of God for the salvation of Humanity through the birth of Jesus. Even though during these holidays we are used to giving gifts to our loved ones, we should remember that, gifts are not the most important thing. Many times we fail to celebrate what Christmas really is about, and we make this holiday one of frustration and stress instead of a peaceful and happy one, which is the purpose for which Jesus was born. “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11; “Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." Luke 2:13-14.

The ancient Christians called this day NATIVITATE, which means the birth of life for you. “Jesus is Life and that life is the light of men: John 1:4. Isaiah prophesized the birth of Jesus a long time before he was born: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 The gift from God is eternal life in Jesus Christ. When Jesus was born there wasn’t room for Him at the inn. He went to his own and they rejected him. Will he have a place in your Life? There is a gift of love from God for you this Christmas. What will you do with it? Someone said: Even if Jesus Christ was born a thousand times in Bethlehem, if he isn’t born in your heart none of it matters. Celebrate Christmas this year and may its true meaning become real in your life. May joy, peace and harmony reign in your home and in your loved ones. May the prince of peace live in your heart. Merry Christmas!

Navidad según el diccionario es una contracción de natividad que significa nacimiento. Esto quiere decir que con la Navidad comienza la obra de Dios para la salvación del hombre a través del nacimiento de Jesús. Aunque en estas fechas acostumbramos dar regalos a nuestros seres queridos, debemos tener presente que eso no es lo más importante. Muchas veces dejamos de celebrar el verdadero motivo de la navidad y hacemos de esta fecha motivo de frustración y de carga, en lugar de paz y gozo, que es el propósito por el que Jesucristo nació.”Les doy nuevas de gran gozo....Hoy les ha nacido , en la ciudad de David, un Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor.” Lucas2:11; ...”Multitud de ángeles del cielo, que alababan a Dios y decían: Gloria a Dios en las alturas, y en la tierra Paz, a los que gozan de su buena voluntad”. Nearly 30 percent of Los Angeles Unified School District students placed in English language learning programs are not reclassified as proficient by the end of middle school, according to a report released by the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute at the University of Southern California (TRPI). The study “¿Qué Pasa? Are English Language Learning Students Remaining in English Learning Classes Too Long?” details the value of redesignating students as fluent English proficient. Researchers found that reclassification as late as the eighth grade is associated with improved academic outcomes when compared to students who remain in the English language learning (ELL) programs.

The study is unique because it is based on thousands of student records and seven years of data. Most other studies into the subject take just a snapshot of student outcomes within a short time frame. Researchers determined that about three-fourths of the students who were English language learners entering the ninth grade had been in U.S. schools eight years or more, and 29.1 percent were still in ELL programs by the beginning of freshman year in high school.

The study also revealed that 69.1 percent of students in ELL classes are U.S. citizens. "Surprisingly, we have American children outnumbering foreign born students by a ratio of about 2:1 in English language learning" said Edward Flores, TRPI researcher who worked on the study. The study results are no surprise to Councilman Uriel Macias who recalls how the elementary school he attended tried to place him and his siblings in ESL classes. “My mom refused to let them enroll us in ESL classes,” said Macias. “She wanted us to learn English and made every effort to make sure we were placed in those classes.” While Macias realizes that not all parents are as unrelenting as his mother, he encourages parents to be mindful of their child’s progress. “Children are like sponges and can quickly learn another language. It’s important that parents make sure their child is reclassified as soon as possible so they can attend English classes and continue their education.”

According to the study, students who were able to transition into mainstream English classes demonstrated a reduced likelihood of dropping out of school, and higher likelihood of passing the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and taking advanced placement (AP) courses.

As I looked forward to retirement, I understood that deleting 50 hours of work from my weekly schedule would greatly reduce the stress in my life. Now, in year two of retirement, I have certainly experienced how wonderful it is to have those hours to pursue other less stressful activities such as reading, gardening, cleaning my own house, cooking, scrapbooking, and spending time with grand children. What I hadn’t anticipated was the liberation from holiday stress.

Preparations for the holidays are supposed to be fun; but I have to admit to you that shopping on December 24 and wrapping presents until 2:00 a.m. on Christmas morning was definitely not fun! Nor did I consider doing the grocery shopping for the holiday dinner and preparing the final touches on the meal just minutes before the guests arrived to be my idea of “getting into the spirit”. While many of my non-working friends began decorating their homes the day after Thanksgiving, I had to be content with purchasing the last scraggly tree in the lot and throwing a few very worn out ornaments onto the already dried out needles.

Well, I am happy to report that none of the above will be happening this year! I managed to decorate my mantel with Halloween décor, when Halloween wasn’t even over. I baked the Thanksgiving pumpkin pies so early that we have already devoured them. My guests for Thanksgiving dinner received their invitations a full month prior to Thanksgiving rather than my usual “By the way, if you don’t have any plans for Thanksgiving dinner next week, you can come to my house”. And Christmas, I’m happy to tell you, will see our house fully decorated by December 11, eliminating the need to keep the fire-ready tree up until the middle of January so that I can finally sit down and look at it for awhile. And best of all, I purchased six Christmas presents when October was still on the calendar.

So what will I do with the rest of my 50 hours as the holidays approach? I think that I will leisurely scour my recipe books to find a scrumptious Pineapple Upside Down Cake. I will slowly wrap each Christmas present shortly after purchasing it, make intricate lovely bows and attach package tags with names written in perfectly lovely calligraphy. I will create incredibly artistic place mats to adorn my holiday table so that each of my guests can appreciate how much time I devoted in anticipation of their visit.

Lest you think that I have forgotten about the most important part of each holiday season—the reason that we celebrate these significant days-the true essence of the holidays, I will schedule more into this season’s activities. I will put at the top of my “to do” list time to attend Church services, time for people whose holidays may not be as special as mine have been, and time spent giving thanks for the many blessings that I have forgotten to count in my stressful working years.

Mientras que esperaba mi jubilación, sabia que borrar 50 horas de trabajo de mi semana reduciría el nivel de estrés en mi vida. Ahora con dos años de jubilación, he disfrutado mucho de esas 50 horas haciendo actividades que no causan estrés como leer, mantener mi jardín, limpiar mi propia casa, cocinando, creando álbumes y pasando mucho tiempo con mis nietos. Lo que no había anticipado era la liberación de estrés durante la época navideña.

Las preparaciones para estas festividades deben de ser agradables; pero tengo que confesarles que ir de compras el 24 de diciembre y envolviendo regalos hasta las 2:00 a.m. en la mañana de navidad no era muy agradable. Tampoco consideraba ir a comprar cosas para le cena y preparar la comida el mismo día que llegarían mis invitados, como diversión. Mientras muchos de mis amigos decoraban sus hogares en noviembre, me tuve que satisfacer con comprar el último árbol en el lote que estaba casi muerto y decorarlo lo mejor que podía.

¡Estoy feliz de reportar que nada de lo mencionado pasara este año! Decore mi casa para Halloween, Antes de que terminara la temporada. Hice postres para el día de acción de gracias que nos comimos antes del día debido. Mis invitados recibieron sus invitaciones un mes antes de la fecha en vez de mi llamada a ultima hora “por si acaso no tienes planes para el día de acción de gracias, puedes venir a mi casa.” Y para navidad, estoy feliz en decirles que nuestro hogar fue decorado completamente el 11 de diciembre, eliminando la necesidad de mantener ese árbol medio muerto hasta mediados de enero para poder finalmente disfrutar de el. Mejor que todo compre seis regalos de navidad en el mes de Octubre.

¿Entonces que haré con mis 50 horas mientras se acerca la navidad? Creo que buscare recetes para hacer pasteles. Envolveré los regalos con calma después de comprarlos, y decorarlos con listones bonitos y fijare tarjetas a cada uno con caligrafía elegante. Decorare mi mesa para la cena de navidad de una manera creativa y artística para que cada uno de mis invitados pueda apreciar el tiempo que dedique en anticipación de su visita.

Si piensan que se me ha olvidado la parte más importante de cada navidad—la razón por la cual celebramos estos días importantes, el significado de la navidad, esta temporada haré tiempo para apreciar esto también. Entre todos los proyectos que tengo le daré prioridad ha atender servicios en mi Iglesia, ayudare a los que su navidad tal vez no sea tan especial como la mía, y daré gracias por todas las bendiciones que daba por hecho en mis días estresantes durante todos esos años.

The most touching holiday story I have ever heard was told to me by my husband, Martin. Martin was born and raised in Mexico City. Unfortunately, his father was not a stable provider and was often absent from the home while his mother worked hard to ensure her six children had their basic needs such as food, clothing and warm shelter. They were very poor and resources were limited. Martin, however, can recall that every Christmas and every Three Kings Day, he and his brothers had gifts waiting for them under the tree.

As a young adult, Martin questioned how his mother was able to fulfill their requests to Santa Claus and the three Magi kings when money was always tight. He finally asked his mother to reveal her secret. Lupe, my mother-in-law, shared that she would go out and sell bean tostadas during the cold holiday season when stores and merchants would stay open late to accommodate the holiday rush. She admitted she would do this for many nights after working long days in a factory. Furthermore, she did this until she was able to accumulate the money she needed to buy the items on her children’s wish lists scribbled upon crumpled paper.

In learning this about his past, Martin experienced sadness but also came to realize how much his mother loved them as demonstrated by her selfless actions. Martin recalls that during other times of the year and as a child, he often felt envious of other neighborhood children who owned toys his mother could not afford. Come the holiday season, however, Martin remembers that he and his brothers played for long hours with their new bicycles, roller skates and games, all the while giving innocent thanks to the Saint Nick, Melchor, Gaspar and Baltazar.

Martin’s most memorable moments happened on Christmas morning where Lupe would sit by her window, covered by a warm Oaxacan shawl, sipping on champurrado and smiling as her children waved to her in complete contentment. In the evening, Martin’s mother would prepare traditional Mexican dishes such as romeritos, which are rosemary sprigs with dry shrimp in a delicious mole sauce, and bacalao, a holiday dish made from dry salted cod both served with warm bread and Christmas punch.

In looking back, Martin realizes that it was his mother’s love and sacrifices that impressed him the most as it was these undying qualities about his mother that made his childhood less painful and harsh for him and his siblings. Not only did Lupe refuse to allow poverty to get in the way of her children’s happiness especially during the holidays, but she also showed her children the value of sacrifice. For Martin, of course, Lupe is the most beautiful person who has ever lived. She not only gave him life, guidance and support but also the greatest gift of all which is love.

As we all head towards a bleak holiday season, focus on the love we share with others. Use that love to nurture holiday cheer for those in your presence.

La historia que más ha tocado mi corazón me la contó mi esposo Martín. Martín nació y creció en la ciudad de México. Desafortunadamente su padre no era un proveedor estable y estaba ausente de su vida mientras que su madre trabajaba duro para asegurar que sus seis hijos tenían las necesidades básicas como comida, ropa y techo. Eran muy pobres y los recursos limitados. Pero Martín recuerda que cada Navidad y día de los Reyes Magos, el y sus hermanos tenían regalos esperándolos bajo el árbol.

Como adolescente, Martín se preguntaba como su madre pudo satisfacer las peticiones que hacían a Santa Claus y a los Reyes Magos cuando tenía poco dinero. Al fin le pregunto a su mama que revelara su secreto. Lupe, mi suegra, le dijo que salía a vender tostadas de frijoles durante diciembre cuando las tiendas y mercantes quedaban abiertos para acomodarse a la demanda de estas fechas. Admitió que lo hacia por muchas noches después de trabajar los días largos en la factoría. Ella hacia esto hasta que tenia suficiente dinero para comprar las cosas que sus hijos habían escrito en sus cartas a Santa Claus.

Cuando Martín supo de esto le dio tristeza pero también se dio cuenta de cuanto su mama los quería demostrándolo con sus acciones bondadosas. Martín recuerda que durante el año se sentía un poco envidioso de otros niños que tenían juguetes que su mama no podía comprar. Cuando llegaba la navidad Martín recuerda que el y sus hermanos jugaban por muchas horas con sus bicicletas, patines y juegos nuevos inocentemente dándole gracias a San Nicolás, Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar.

Los momentos mas memorables para Martín pasaron durante la mañana de Navidad donde Lupe se sentaba junto a su venta, tomando champurrado y sonriendo mientras sus hijos sonreian completamente contentos. En la tarde, su mama preparaba comida tradicional como romeritos, que son ramitas de romero con camaron en un mole delicioso y bacalao con pan caliente y jugo delicioso.

Cuando Martin se acuerda, Martin se da cuenta de que era el amor de su y los sacrificios que ella hizo que lo impresionaron mas porque eso era lo que hizo que la niñez de el y sus hermanos fuera menos dolorosa y dificil. Su madre no dejo que la pobress afectara la felicidad de sus hijos especialmente durante la epoca navideña, pero tambien le enseño a sus hijos el valor del sacrificio. Para Martin su madre es la persona mas bella que ha conocido. No solo le dio vida, consejo y apoyo, tambien le dio el mejor regalo de todos, amor.

Esta epoca navideña que pronto se acerca, enfoquese en el amore que comparte con todos. Use ese amor para darle felicidad a los que estan en su presencia.

The holidays are here and for many of us, this brings more festive gatherings and more food. Unfortunately this also brings more opportunities for what are known as “food borne illnesses.” Once again, as with so many health issues, prevention is the key. It is important to know the foods that are more frequently the villains in causing food poisoning, or these food borne illnesses and what food handling methods help prevent them. Meats, turkey, chicken and other poultry, seafood, eggs and egg products, milk, cheese, and dairy products, fresh fruits, fruit juices, and vegetables, as well as pet foods are the food sources of intestinal infections caused by viruses or bacteria that they may carry.

The quick mantra for these high risk foods and food safety is CLEAN, SEPARATE, COOK, AND CHILL.

• CLEAN: Wash all food preparing hands as well as all food preparation surfaces often. Include all counter tops and cutting boards and all little helping hands. Wash knives & utensils between uses on different food items. Be sure to thoroughly and carefully wash all fresh fruits and vegetables.

• SEPARATE: Don’t contaminate some foods with others. Keep all raw meat, poultry, seafood, and eggs and their juices away for all other food, especially ready to eat foods.

• COOK: Cook to recommended temperatures. Minimum cooking temperatures are readily available. Some common guidelines for internal food temperatures are: ~ground meats & meat mixtures, fresh pork & ham, and egg dishes - 160°F ~ground turkey & chicken, whole & pieces of turkey, ~duck & goose, and leftovers & casseroles- 165°F ~steaks, roasts, & chops- 145°F ~precooked ham to reheat- 140°F

• CHILL: The amount of bacteria on foods kept at room temperature can double every 20 minutes. The more the bacteria present on food the higher the chance of becoming sick. Refrigerate foods quickly after serving as cold temperatures keep bacteria from multiplying.

In the event that you or your family members develop an intestinal infection, try to replace fluids plentifully, resume eating with bland foods such as banana, rice, applesauce, or toast. Watch young children and older persons carefully for dehydration. Check www.foodsafety.gov for additional tips and information. AND have a healthy and wonderful holiday season.

La navidad se acerca y para muchos de nosotros, esto trae fiestas, comida y desafortunadamente mas oportunidades para lo que se le llama “enfermedad alimentaría.” Como en muchas enfermedades la prevención es clave. Es importante tener conocimiento de las comidas que causan intoxicación alimentaría y cual es la mejor manera de prevenir esto. Carnes, pavo, pollo y otras aves, mariscos, huevos, y productos que contienen huevos, leche, queso, y productos lácteos, frutas frescas, jugos, y vegetales, al igual que comida para sus mascotas son las comidas que pueden causar infecciones intestinales por medio de virus o bacterias que tal vez carguen.

La solución rápida para estos alimentos de alto riesgo es LIMPIE, SEPARE, COCINE, Y ENFRIE.

• LIMPIE: Lave sus manos y la superficie donde prepara su comida frecuentemente. Incluya las tablas de cortar y todo lo que utilice para la preparación. Lave sus cuchillos, y utensilios entre uso de alimentos diferentes. Asegurese de lavar todas las frutas y vegetales.

Ingredients:

• 4lbs of Sweet Potatoes or Yams• 1 Stick of Butter• 2 cups of freshly squeezed Orange Juice• 1 cup of Spiced Rum• ½ cup of Honey• 1 teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon• 1 teaspoon of Ground Nutmeg• 1/8 cup of Vanilla extract• 2 cups of brown sugar packed • 1 Cup of Jiffy Puff

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Boil yams until slightly underdone, to avoid breaking. Strain, cool and set aside.

In a large container whisk together orange juice, butter, honey, rum, and vanilla. In another bowl, whisk brown sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon.

Chop cooled yams to bite sized pieces and place in a deep baking dish, add dry ingredients and stir to coat. Pour liquid over yams and bake for 20 minutes. Take out of the oven and coat with Jiffy Puff Marchmallows and place back in the oven for another 5 minutes.

Ingredientes:

• 4lbs de Camote• 1 Barra de Mantequilla• 2 tazas de jugo de naranja fresco• 1 taza de Ron• ½ taza de Miel• 1 cucharadita de Canela en Polvo• 1 cucharadita de nuez moscada• 1/8 taza de Vanilla• 2 tazas de Azúcar• 1 taza de crema de Malvaviscos

Preparación:

Caliente su horno a 350 grados. Hierva camotes hasta que estén medio cocidos, para prevenir que se quiebren. Saque los del agua y deje que sen enfríen a un lado.

En un contenedor grande mezcle el jugo de naranja, mantequilla, miel, ron y vainilla. En otro contenedor mezcle la azúcar, nuez mozcada y la canela.

Corte los camotes en pedazos pequeños y ponga los en una cazuela agregue los ingredientes secos y mezclemos hasta que los ingredientes cubran el camote. Agregue la mezcla de líquidos y ornéalos por 20 minutos. Saque los del horno y agregue una capa de crema de Malvaviscos y déjelo hornear por 5 minutos mas.
