The Italian Wine Specialists

La Cantina, our wine division, has been operating since 2009, with a focus on Italian wines chosen on their au-thenticity and value. Most come from family businesses with long and successful histories (much like ours). These are wines made by real people who, for the most part, deal exclusively with Mercato in the Australian market. To source most of these and make choices about what and how to sell them, we have enlisted a friend and regular customer, David Ridge, to help us. David, as you may be aware, is one of Australia’s original and experienced practitioners in Italian wine, and a well known expert in distribution and quality service. And to service you is our sales team; a knowledgeable and enthusiastic group of industry professionals, who pride themselves on providing quality service and expert advice, with a focus on bringing value and initiative to your business. We hope they can help you in many facets of business, and be at your disposal should you need them. We also now distribute widely around most of Australia, with our own people or via close sub-agent rela-tionships, in Western Australia and Victoria as well as here in home base South Australia. La Cantina will not only offer interesting wines to you but also be a pleasure for you to deal with, hopefully for years to come. We look forward to a long partnership with you. Beach Road Wines McLaren Vale, South Australia Established - 2004 Winemaker - Briony & Tony Hoare Bottles - 30,000 Website - beachroadwines.com.au

Beach Road Wines has been a passion for owners Tony and Briony Hoare since its inception in 2004. The culmina-tion of years of experience between the highly regarded husband and wife team, BRW continues to innovate with alternative varietals and winemaking in McLaren Vale. Briony, acclaimed consultant winemaker crafts complex, textural whites and bright, savoury red wines which speak of both their unique South Australian sites and of course some Italian winemaking flair. Viticulturalist Tony tends the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu vineyards with attention to detail and unique management for each variety. Having spent time watching these varieties flourish in their homeland of Campania, in Italy’s South, Tony knows just how suitable Langhorne Creek is to the propagation of their unique varieties. These vineyards include some of the most mature plantings of Greco and Aglianico in Australia, meaning the fruit produces layered and complex wines that often tread the road less travelled, but are immediately interesting and unique. Every vintage offers a new challenge and reward, and the brilliance of this team is shown in the incredible variation of character from one year to the next. The whites show a gorgeous fruit purity, especially their excellent Fiano, whilst the reds offer a great combo of generosity and savoury characters. Australia meets Italy with arguably the best from both worlds! Their fabulous new cellar door is very much a reflection of their characters; relaxed, family friendly and of course all about the food and wine. Worth a visit next time you’re in the ‘Vale.

Zitta Barossa Valley, South Australia Established - 2004 Winemaker - Angelo de Fazio Bottles - 30,000 Website - zitta.com.au

Zitta's richly flavoured and beautifully balanced wines are handmade in the traditional way to capture the true character of the De Fazio vineyard's exceptional fruit. Established in 1864 on the banks of the Greenock Creek at Greenock in the North Western Barossa Valley, South Australia, the topographically blessed vineyard's proud story is told in every natural, unforced drop. Angelo de Fazio is a winemaker of patience and time-honoured practice, allowing the grapes to show their potential and crafting wines with as minimal intervention as he sees fit. Angelo’s father, Gaspere, migrated to South Australia to start a new life shortly after the second world war. He continued working with vines and was particularly drawn to the Greenock/Moppa region in the North Western Barossa Valley, noticing a striking similarity between its topography and that of his homeland in Southern Italy. Although the opportunity to purchase his own vineyard there unfortunately never presented itself, Gaspere was careful to pass on his priceless knowledge and observations to Angelo, who has proudly made the De Fazio family vineyard a reality. This is Zitta’s unique heritage, and the dedication it brings to the traditional, old world art of natural wine making is now realised every vintage by Angelo. This small section of Greenock is characterised by its ironstone, which contributes to both the wine’s richness and finesse. The shiraz always have a densely packed core of black fruit, along with a silkiness that defines the Zitta style. His Chardonnay, made like Chablis (unoaked, but plenty of time ageing in tank), will surprise most people with its class and the other wines - Grenache and GSM which are only available in small allocations - show a deft touch and incredibly good fruit from the hand nurtured old vines. Everything is hand-picked and the only thing added is sulphur.

Owner Angelo De Fazio says that all he knows about viticulture and winemaking came from his father (and gen-erations before him). The Zitta vineyard dates back to 1864, with a few vines remaining from that time, and a block planted with cuttings taken from those vines. Shiraz dominates the plantings (22ha), the balance made up of chardonnay, grenache and a few mourvedre vines; only a small amount of the production is retained for the Zitta label. The property has two branches of the Greenock Creek running through it, and the soils reflect the ancient geological history of the site, in part with a subsoil of river pebbles reflecting the course of a long-gone river James Halliday - James Halliday’s Wine Companion

Produced by Moletto in Verona, Spritzone has enjoyed success as the #1 pre-mix spritz in Europe thanks to its careful blending and full flavour. This is not industrial beverage, it is the result of many years of perfecting the recipe, using their estate grown Prosecco as a base, and a closely guarded recipe in order to make a bright, lively and flavoursome Spritz Spritzone is quite concentrated too, so can be diluted slightly to get even more bang-for-your buck, or to combat lots of melting ice on a warm day, when Spritz truly is in a league of its own as a thirst quenching aperitif. Tasting Note Deep red, with more than a hint of trademark bitterness that the Italians have perfected. The flavour is balanced by the right amount of sweetness, orange zest, citrus skin and botanical herbs & spices followed by a long and full-flavoured finish that is fresh, dry and timeless.

Manni Nössing (Hoandlhof) Bolzano, Alto Adige Established - 2000 Winemaker - Manfred Nössing Bottles - 22,000 Website - manni-noessing.com

This is not easy wine to get a hold of, only 3,000 bottles of wines like his Gruner Veltliner are produced in total! We get what we’re given. Asking other Alto Adige producers for their ‘hidden gem’ winery in the region, and many will tell you of Manni Nössing. Pre his first vintage under his own label, Manfred ‘Manni’ Nössing was selling the fruit from his own vines to famous local co-op Abbazia di Novacella. Even in his first few years of production, the wine was only sold in Italy until mounting pressure persuaded him to allocate some of his wine for export. His tiny winery has, since 2000, been producing some of the most highly regarded (and hard to get) wine from this ‘Austrian corner’ of Italy. An untrained winemaker, Manni has however embodied the region’s trend towards impeccably clean wine-making with a hand’s-off approach, and it shows in his gorgeous wines of pristine clarity, fruit purity and a miner-al lift. He has since expanded his vineyard holdings, still only just 5 ha in total. Careful vineyard management is Manni’s forte though, with is South-facing vines battling both freezing night time temperatures and searing Summer sun. Of his grapes, he says “they are happy in the shade and unhappy sitting in the sun all day”. Softening that raciness and tangy acidity is done in the winery though, with all wines keeping in touch with their lees for many months after the ferment. Vinifying the almost local varieties of Kerner, Gruner, Muller Thurgau and Sylvaner, Nossing’s wines all have distinctive personalities reflective of both their terroir and variety. The Kerner in particular (a cross between Ries-ling and local red grape Schiava) is a masterpiece, showing just why has become popular especially amongst other local growers. From the parceled vineyards, absolutely everything is hand picked, each bunch carefully nurtured into the winery by passionate workers including Manni himself.

“His winery might be tiny, but Manfred Nössing’s name is very big in Alto Adige. Conscientious and charismatic winemaking makes for classy wines that show the very best of the local grape varieties… Among his range of great wines the Grüner Veltliner is exceptional, possibly the best in the entire region” Bibenda Wine - The Guide to the Finest Italian Wine

Zuccolo Spilimbergo, Friuli Venezia Giulia Established - 1950 Winemaker - Giovanni Dall’Orto and Alberto Zanello Bottles - 4,000,000 Website - fantinel.com

Marco Fantinel is something of a rockstar in the Northern Italian wine industry. His friends include Italian politicians and sports stars, and apart from the small task of owning and overseeing his wineries, he presides a football club (US Triestina Calcio), owns the oldest San Daniele Prosciutto producer in Italy, and has a franchise of over 30 ‘Pane e Vino’ bars around Italy. These wines from Friuli’s Grave zone are generous and varietal, the light, calcaric and limestone soils imparting true texture and character into each of the whites, and giving a real point of difference to the Prosecco which has proven to perform well above its pricepoint. Located in prime winegrowing country with exclusive microclimates and unique stories, the Zuccolo estate vaunts a collection of wines with authentic flavours and rare naturalness that transform each taste into an intense encounter of the senses. This selection of wines from the best DOC zones of Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a treasure trove of ethe-real pleasures of the senses from particularly fine terroirs. Here the grapes ripen according to the rhythms of nature and are harvested with the care of those who know how to preserve all their unique characteristics.

La Roncaia Colli Orientali, Friuli Venezia Giulia Established - 1998 Winemaker - Adriano Copetti Bottles - 50,000 Website - fantinel.com

The ‘premium’ brand of the Fantinel family’s estate is located in the heart of the Colli Orientali zone, probably the most important and certainly most reputable zone that sits at one of Friuli’s highest points (300m above sea level). Wines from La Roncaia are both native whites and reds, as well as some of the new movement of ‘Super-Friuli’ wines combining both local and foreign grape varieties which have shown to be suitable to the region. Each bunch is picked by hand and table sorted, from less than 22 hectares of land, and the wines of La Roncaia are only made in good vintages to ensure that the wines are consistently of super-high quality. “A place for contemplation and long experience accumulated during the slow passage of the seasons, where each day-to-day act takes on the sacredness of a ritual. Close to the exclusive vineyards in Cergneu di Nimis stands La Roncaia cellar, where life proceeds in complete harmony with the surroundings. Here skilled hands attentively monitor the ripening of the grapes, which are carefully selected and harvested to make prized wines that intensify the aromas and flavours of the exclusive zone of Colli Orientali del Friuli”

Widely regarded as one of the great Soave producers, Coffele remains family owned and run, using the garganega grape (and in some cases the rarer Trebbiano di Soave) to brilliant effect. Their wines; still, sparkling and sweet, are all benchmarks. Their neighbours, the famous Pieropan, might steal some of the limelight from this tiny estate, but this makes it an even more worthwhile discovery when the wines are as pure and glistening as these. With plenty of limestone in their vineyards, layered over old Italian soil, the healthy vines realise their true potential for a balance between finesse and structure. This is a very ‘hands off’ winery, in fact Coffele are almost entirely ’natural’, one of these words which get bandied around quite a bit today. Here, organic principles are practiced, with nothing but sulphur used from vineyard to bottling. Passionate horse breeders, Coffele’s horses are the vineyard’s workers year round, and endow the vines with organic nutrients and incredibly efficient mid-row maintenance! In late 2014, Coffele were recognised as the first certified organic winery in Soave Classico.

“One of the wineries that has championed the image and value of Veronese whites in the last decade is that of Alberto and Chiara Coffele, two of the most appreciated growers in the Soave area. Their estate comprises a single plot of 25 ha where limestone mitigates the influence of basalt, conferring elegance and tautness on the wines” Gambero Rosso, Italian Wines

La Morandina Cuneo, Piemonte Established - 1780 Winemaker - Giulio Morando Bottles - 150,000 Website - lamorandina.com

An extraordinary family and estate, centuries in development, with Barbera vines well over 100 years of age and some of the oldest, best and most distinctive Moscato vineyards in Piedmont. A visit with the chisel-jawed Guilio Morando is one of the most charming in Italy. You might even be lucky enough to see him hovering overhead in his bright yellow chopper (which he keeps tucked away in an unassuming shed) on one of his weekend getaways to France or Austria. His estate is almost entirely sustained by the solar and heat energy generated and captured in the day to day running of the winery. Tasting his freshly pressed Moscato juice is an extraordinary privilege. La Morandina’s terroir is superlative and incredibly idiosyncratic. The Moscato grape, by nature most aromatic, is exalted by the calcareous soil on which the 15 hectares of vineyard stand. The Morando brothers’ Moscato is perfection: it has the richness coupled with a fragrant freshness, and a bouquet that transcends Moscato with unique aromatics of sage and mint. In this estate strict organic practices have been utilized for over 30 years, in fact only natural manure and compost are used. Leguminous plants are sown between the rows and biological control is normally used against pests. Furthermore, Giulio and Paolo Morando closely collaborate with the University of Turin, where their uncle Albino has taught viticulture for many years, and a considerable amount of research work is carried out at the La Morandina vineyards and winery. The estate offers a wonderful Barbera d’Asti, from some very old vines: husky and riddled with spice, these are pure examples of this rich soil, originating from the Miocene Epoch during which the Alps continued rising from the sea (fossilized shells can still be found in the ground). A classic example of traditional wines made with modern thinking, the essence of La Morandina.

Castello di Neive Neive, Piemonte Established - 1964 Winemaker - Claudio Ruggero Bottles - 150,000 Website - castellodineive.it

Here’s a place you must visit when (not if) you go to Piedmont next. The loveable, charismatic Italo Stupino is one of the nicest and most fascinating proprietors of the whole, wider region. He has nudged his domaine steadily forward for decades now, building up to a point where apart from making arguably the best Arneis, method champenoise and (believe it or not) fabulous Pinot Noirs from 50 + year old vines, his prize asset is now producing to its obvious potential. That prize asset is his monopole Barbaresco vineyard, the famous cru ‘Santo Stefano’ and obvious potential has long been shown by the great wines produced by nearby Bruno Giacosa, the only person who has been able to buy grapes from Stupino for years. The cellars of Castello di Neive are extremely large, clearly demonstrating the designers’ optimism that the winery’s quality would be easily recognized. Castello di Neive comprises a 60 hectare estate, all in the Neive town council, in the Langhe area of Piemonte. 25 hectares of the property are devoted to grape growing and all the production (approximately 12,000 cases a year) is obtained from Castello di Neive’s own vines in the follow-ing vineyards: Basarin, Cortini, Gallina, Marcorino, Messoirano-Montebertotto; Santo Stefano and Valtorta. Tradition, research, and creativity make up the philosophy of Castello di Neive. Recently released photographs from the winery’s library show that, as early as 1904, Pinot Nero was being bottled at the castle, and that by 1925 Nebbiolo was recognized as a fine wine grape with varietal labelling. Now, roughly one century later, the Stupino family continues tradition of cultivating and vinifying these noble varieties as well as the often overlooked Barbera and Dolcetto. Their winemaking philosophy is to respect a centuries-old heritage of winemaking while embracing new technologies and research activities—both in the vineyard and in the cellars.

“If an official classification of the territories of the Barbaresco area existed, Santo Stefano di Neive would be in right up there. The expressiveness of this selection is obvious particularly after long ageing, and it contributes, together with rigorous selection in the vineyard and a winery that makes for an unforgettable visit, to making Castello di Neive one of the pinnacles of (Piemontese) winemaking excellence” Gambero Rosso - Italian Wines

Giribaldi Rodello, Piemonte Established - 1964 Winemaker - Claudio Ruggero Bottles - 150,000 Website - castellodineive.it

The Giribaldi Estate remains a true family-based and motivated winemaker, as it had been for more than a century. The great red variety Nebbiolo is their speciality and at all levels the wines have texture and complexity. Their entry levels are of particular value, reflecting not only their place, but also Giribaldi’s commitment to producing wines with a sense of place. With the third genereation of Mario’s at the helm, they have also shown a great interest in organic and biodynamic farming practices. “Azienda Giribaldi Mario was founded at the begining of the 20th century and has now been farming for three generations. Times in those days were hard and agriculture was not only one of the rare sources of economic support but a reason to be proud of those strong ties with a ground that caused so much suffering. The people however, were used to sacrificing themselvers for the land. Today following the example set by tradition, and for the love of something as genuine and alive as wine the work begun by our fathers and grandfathers before them lives on with the same passion. Times are still hard and changeable. The quantity produced is a final result and represents the logical consequence of a continual process of improve-ment and consolidation that begins with the tilling of the land and continues with the technology of transformation. What has not changed since then is the fortunate location of the winery in the heart of the Langhe clearly an extraordinary wine growing land, but above all a land for culture and traditions. The colour, sounds, smell and flavours emerging from this area are the true expression for culture, a means of communication, an image in itself. Our efforts and commitment are directed towards these issues; making good wines produced in keeping with the traditions of our land that have the right tasting properties for everyday consumption and will prove pleasing and stimulating on every social occasion”

Bera Neviglie, Piemonte Established - 1979 Winemaker - Walter and Umberto Bera Bottles - 130,000 Website - bera.it

Fate or history decreed that the Bera property would finish a tantalizing 400 metres just outside the Barbaresco zone. Typically unperturbed, the characterful and charismatic Walter Bera has gradually developed a collection of the Piemontese classics, with each beautifully made, rich and strongly expressive – and great value. The family treat each guest as one of their own, and if you’re lucky, mamma Alida’s carne cruda is the best in Piemonte (and superb with their Arneis). Riccardo (Jimmy) Bera is third generation and a close friend; he now looks after the winery with his dad and brother, Umberto. Located in Neviglie, a small, bucolic town with breathtaking views of the Alps and the gleaming Tanaro River, this small, family-owned-and-operated winery spans several acres in Alba and Asti, two classic Piedmontese grape-growing areas famous for high quality Italian winemaking. The Bera vineyards thrive in soil rich with clay, limestone and volcanic rock. The southeast hillside location ranges from 340-380m above sea level, with good exposure and continuous wind. With great passion and desire, the Bera family strives to respect to the tradition of the territory. Their winemaking philosophy is simple: From the cultivation of the grapes, to the winemaking process and bottling, quality is their #1 concern. Bera vines are mainly Moscato — the Moscato d’Asti a primary Bera specialty - and these vines produce a wine which was recently named Italian sparkling wine of the year by renowned reviewer Luigi Veronelli. Additionally, other local grapes including Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo are cultivated to produce rich, fleshy red wines with bags of character.

Revello La Morra, Piemonte Established - 1992 Winemaker - Lorenzo and Carlo Revello Bottles - 75,000 Website - revellofratelli.com

The Revello brothers, Carlo and Enzo are now acknowledged masters of La Morra Nebbiolo, making great wines year after year, from their small holding’s of some of La Morra’s and Barolo’s greatest sites. They have long ago ‘grown out’ of the oaky stage, allocating each Cru either large or small oak as (they deem) necessary. The wines are each an essay in complexity and shape and speak of their terroir. The famous crus around the tiny village of Annunziata produce four Baroli which are at once familiar to the house style, but also express different characters dependent on their altitude, exposure, soil profile and oak regime. Incredible contrasts can be found, for example, in Gattera and its neighbouring vineyard Conca, one favouring minerality and finesse; the other lashings of black fruit and chocolate. Year on year the popularity of these fabulous wines seems to grow, with reviewers favouring these wines along with the truly illustrious names of the area. As the Australian custodians of the Revello brand, we intend to nurture one of the real gems of our range into a name synonymous with La Morra and indeed Barolo itself.

Paolo Conterno Monforte d’Alba, Piemonte Established - 1886 Winemaker - Giorgio and Massimo Conterno, Giuseppe Caviola Bottles - 69,000 Website - paoloconterno.com

The younger, more image conscious members of this Conterno family don’t take long to point out that their piece of the great ‘Ginestra’ cru abuts, immediately, another great, maybe the greatest, vineyard of Barolo, the famous ‘Cascina Francia’ of Giacomo Conterno. Where they meet marks the transition of Serralunga into Monforte d’Al-ba. This important vineyard is arguably the perfect axis between Serralunga’s dark fruit, soot, tar and mega tannin, with Monforte’s characteristic deep black and blue fruit, generosity and earthiness. Founded in the late 19th century by Paolo Conterno, the Casa della Ginestra as it was once affectionately known, was one of the pioneering producers in Barolo*. The original Paolo had the foresight to predict a market for fine, single vineyard wines, and from as early as 1886 he began to sub-divide his vineyard by variety and exposure. More than a century on, and the now fourth generation of Conterno’s continues the tradition in Ginestra inherited from their great-grandfather, producing distinctive Monforte wines and combining a passion for the land with high levels of technical expertise. Still very traditionally made, meaning long macerations and large oak maturation, even for the Dolcetto and Langhe Nebbiolo. This combination of technique and tradition has meant that, in the past couple of decades especially, Paolo Conterno has gained its position as one of the premier producers in Monforte d’Alba and indeed all of Barolo. *Therefore although this is not the best known ‘Conterno’ in Barolo, they are the originals, pre-dating Giacomo Conterno by about 20 years

“The superb work in both vineyards and the cellar translates into wines with a classic profile that reveal the invitingly balsamic aromas typical of the fantastic Ginsestra di Monforte Cru” Gambero Rosso - Italian Wines “the Conterno family make their wines in the traditional way, interpreting the terroir in one of the best locations to produce Barolo. The results are great wines… given time they reveal all their wonderful elegance” Bibenda - The Guide to the Finest Italian Wines

Fattoria di Lucignano Firenze, Toscana Established - 1546 Winemaker - The Giucciardini family Bottles - 150,000 Website - fattoriadilucignano.com

One of the most imposing, classical Chianti properties that has been with the Giucciardini family since the 12th century. They have been making wine and olive oil since the mid 16th century, but it is now the complete Tuscan estate with olive oil, a great restaurant (Solissimo) and other crafts, to complement compelling and unusually rich reds from Chianti Colli Fiorentini and Vin Santo. The Lucignano farm is set on 150 hectares of hilly land and lies on the stunning ridge between San Casciano Val di Pesa and Montespertoli, about 280 metres above sea level. Geologically the land dates back to the Pliocene, with limestone and clay formations rich in gravel and shingle, which is ideal for growing high quality grape vine and olive tree orchards. The DOCG "Chianti Colli Fiorentini" vineyards and the 5000 olive trees are cultivated on approximately 34 hectares of land. The wine cellars are beneath the imposing Villa, which dates back to the 16 th century. Vitrified cement tanks are used for fermentation and wine ageing. Worthy of mention is the "vinsantaia" for the Vin Santo which is matured and aged 200 litre oak barrels.

Castell’in Villa Castelnuovo Berardenga, Toscana Established - 1971 Winemaker - Coralia Pignatelli Bottles - 100,000 Website - castell’invilla.com

The reds of the commune of Castelnuovo Berardegna are amongst the darkest and most vigorous of the whole zone of Chianti Classico. At the ancient and intriguing Castell’in Villa, Principessa Coralia Pignatelli runs the show, and year after year turns out wines of brilliant purity. She’s a particular sort of lady, who doesn't like fuss and cares little for journalists, so we try to stay on her good side because these are our sort of wines, endlessly inter-esting and frankly stunning to most people, even those who know Sangiovese. They need a big decant or a long time in the glass before showing themselves, but when they do... The following words are from Antonio Galloni, then of The Wine Advocate, now Vinousmedia: “Castell'in Villa is one of the most historic estates in Chianti Classico. Princess Coralia Pignatelli della Leonessa and her husband found the property in 1967 and purchased it the following year. Initially, Princess Coralia and her hus-band thought they would make wine for fun. Princess Coralia's father, a Greek aristocrat, demurred at the thought of his daughter becoming a peasant. At the time, there was just one hectare under vine, but planting began in earnest in 1968 following the suggestions of the Chianti Classico Consorzio, which included white grapes that ended up being used for the first vintages. This tasting covered a number of vintages of the flagship Chianti Classico Riserva going back to the inaugural 1971. Castell’in Villa's Chianti Classico Riserva is fermented in stainless steel, where it also undergoes malolactic fermenta-tion. The wine is then racked into cask where it spends about three years prior to being bottled. It remains one of the most rigorously traditional Chianti Classicos. Poggio delle Rose was planted in 1990 with a clonal selection taken from Castell’in Villa's original vineyards. The wine is aged exclusively in French oak barrels. A small amount was produced in 1994, but the first commercial release was the 1996. Giacomo Tachis bought wines in bulk at Castell’in Villa for the early vintages of Antinori's Tignanello. Although Tachis was never formally a consultant to Castell’in Villa, he advised Princess Coralia on a number of matters, including suggesting she uproot her Canaiolo and Colorino in favor of Sangiovese and later Cabernet Sauvignon. My favorite wines in this tasting were the wines from the 1990s Riservas. Those vintages are old enough to offer plenty of complexity, but still have enough fruit. The wines I tasted from the 2000s were more approachable in style. Princess Coralia says she is paying more attention to details in the cellar. I am sure that is true, but I can't say there is anything from the wines of the 1990s that required too much tinkering.”

Tenuta della Seta Montepulciano, Toscana Established - 1800’s Website - graccianodellaseta.com

With its perfect combo of altitude, aspect and soil, the Della Seta Ferrari Corbelli family have owned their estate, situated at Gracciano-Montepulciano since the 19th century; the incredible vine-age at Della Seta is the result of their long and deliberate propagation. Old vines here probably aren’t what we’re used to, the thin, frail looking vines are so because any nutrients or water they get goes into grapes of some of the highest quality in Tuscany. The wines of Montepulciano have long been in the shadow of the Brunellos from Montalcino, however producers like this continue to show how underrated the wines of Montepulciano are.

Gianni Brunelli Montalcino, Toscana Established - 1987 Winemaker - Paolo Vagaggini Bottles - 35,000 Website - giannibrunelli.it

Gianni Brunelli, a man of many interests, established Osteria Le Logge in Siena, one of Italy’s top restaurants (and a favourite to the likes of George Clooney and Sting). In 1987 Gianni returned to Montalcino and purchased Le Chiuse di Sotto, an estate that had belonged to his father Dino, with two hectares of vineyards standing at 200 meters above sea level in the northern part of the area. The vines of a small plot of vines are still the original ones planted by Dino Brunelli in 1947. After Gianni passed away in 2008, his wife and long time business partner Laura took over the reins, and now runs the winery to her meticulous high standards Gianni Brunelli, a man of many interests, established "Osteria Le Logge" in Siena (which has become one of the top restaurants of the city). In 1987 Gianni returned to Montalcino and purchased Le Chiuse di Sotto, an estate that had belonged to his father Dino, with two hectares of vineards standing at 200 meters above sea level in the northern part of the area. In 1989 Sangiovese for the production of Brunello and of Rosso started being grown again. The vines of a small plot are still the original ones planted by Dino in 1947. The "Podernovone" estate was subsequently purchased. The property has a magnificent view on Monte Amiata and is endowed with 4.5 hectares standing at 350 meters above sea level, mainly Sangiovese with a small percentage of Merlot (that goes into the IGT/proprietary wine "Amor Costante"). The soil of Podernovone, made up of calcareous-marly schists, reflects light and heat thus favouring the ripening of the grapes. The different climate of the two properties (fresh and airy at Le Chiuse di Sotto with a lot of rain in the summer and warmer and ventilated at Podernovone) results in complex and elegant wines. After Gianni passed away in 2008, his wife Laura, who already used to work with him at the estates and at the restaurant, takes care of the production and of the marketing of the wines. Paolo Vagaggini, one of the major experts of Sangiovese, is the winemaker. The vineyards are followed directly by Laura Brunelli with the supervision of an agronomist, a friend of hers. Sustainable viticulture is pursued.

(My aim is to produce wine) without additives, without anti-parasite sprays, having the courage to trust what nature offers us. I want to bring the land of Montalcino to the table Gianni Brunelli The two main vineyard locations, Le Chiuse di Sotto in the Canaluccgu area north-east of Montalcino and Poder-novone to the south, are quite different in soils, altitude and site climates. They compete with each other, depending on the vintage year and create different versions of Brunello, all however rich in character and verve Gambero Rosso - Italian Wines

Tenuta di Tavignano Macerata, Le Marche Established - 1990 Winemaker - Giulio Piazzini Bottles - 85,000 Website - tenutaditavignano.it

Partners, Beatrice Lucangeli and Stefano di Laconi converted their traditional estate to concentrate on quality viticulture in the early 90’s. They have developed their 28 ha of vineyards to be an exemplary source for local varieties, Verdicchio, Sangiovese and Montepulciano which are all controlled and harvested by hand and made with care. Verdicchio is of particular importance, and their single vineyard ‘Misco’ produces some of the most renowned versions of this variety in all of Le Marche. A recent version of Misco Superiore took Gambero Rosso’s prestigious white wine of the year award. In its way from the Apennine Mountains to the Adriatic Sea, the Esino river separates a tidy sequence of hills with a winding profile and many bell towers and olive trees, crossed by rows of vines. Tavignano resides in the very heart of Marche, a region with a plural inflection of talents and an ancient agricultural lineage. On top of one of the hills, near of the noble town of Jesi and on the right of the river, is Tavignano, owned by Lucangeli Aymerch di Laconi family. Here Verdicchio has become a symbol and a flagship. Even if for administrative purposes Tavignano is assigned to the municipality of Cingoli and therefore to the province of Macerata, it must be considered as a fundamental part of the classic Castelli di Jesi area.

Feudi Bizantini Crecchio, Abruzzo Established - 2008 Winemaker - Bottles - 400,000 Website - feudibizantini.it

Feudi Bizantini is a young project founded by a group of wine lovers whom have joined their efforts to take the best from a set of factors linked to the climate, the territory typologies, the grapes and the human work that make Crecchio a unique land in the world wine atlas. The winery’s dedication to Abruzzo’s viticultural past, to innovation, and to research has resulted in superior wines that have elevated this important winegrowing area to world class status. Located in the historical Byzantine town of Crecchio where a medieval castle dominates the hills where the centre of the village lies, the vineyards are situated among the hills in the provinces of Chieti in the region of Abruzzo while the beautiful modern winery is located within the town. The unique position of the vineyards allows them to benefit from the sea and mountain breezes, producing wines that are full in body and truly represent the characteristics of the region. Limestone rich soils with a light base of clay and sand are thanks to the proximity to the Gran Sasso mountain range, and the altitude of the estate itself creates diurnal temperatures ideal for ripening whilst retaining structure within the grapes. The aim of Feudi Bizantini is to make its work the faithful expression of the territory it was named after, through non-invasive usage of modern tech and traditional methods

Cantina del Taburno Taburno, Campania Established - 1983 Winemaker - Filippo Colandrea Bottles - 1,200,00 Website - tenutaditavignano.it

Situated next to the mountain of Taburno, Cantina del Taburno sits at an average elevation of 300m above sea level. Warm days and cool nights, coupled with the elevation, mean Cantina del Taburno produces native varieties (like Falanghina, Fiano and Aglianico) with brilliant results. Somehow this large organisation continues to produce wines with a sense of place, each of the varieties with their own trademark left by the Campania countryside. The Falanghina in particular is one of our favourite whites. Campania’s Aglianico del Taburno DOC in the province of Benevento, is an excellent source of Aglianico – and at very attractive prices. The region, north of Naples at an elevation of 1,000 feet, has a long growing season, hot days and moderately cool nights. Volcanic soil supports the vines. The Aglianico from this area is fruit-driven, approachable, and ready to drink in the shorter term. Cantina del Taburno is the leading producer in the zone, with two excellent-value Aglianicos: the “Fidelis” and the old-vines all-barrique aged “Delius”. Since 1999, wine-making at this site has been the responsibility of Professor Luigi Moio of the University of Naples, who previously oversaw production at Feudi di San Gregorio. Cantina del Taburno offers technical assistance to the 300 viticulturists associated with the Agricultural Union of the Province of Benevento. In addition to this service, Cantina del Taburno encourages and assists local producers to work with indigenous varietals of fruit. Cantina del Taburno is strictly controlled by the public bodies of the Campania Region. Furthermore, Cantina del Taburno is associated with the University of Portici (Naples) and has an on site analysis laboratory and a laboratory for micro-vinification. Many students use the facility to do re-search, write their theses and work on-site. Integrated insect and disease control is carried out by all members in the association. Copper and sulfer-based products are used sparingly to control pests and molds. To fertilize, cover crops are left between the rows of hillside vines, and organic fertilizers are used when necessary. Low doses of SO2 are added to the wines to pre-serve thier freshness and ensure quality.

Tenuta di Fessina Castiglione di Sicilia, Sicilia Established - 2007 Winemaker - Federico Curtaz Bottles - 52,000 Website - tenutadifessina.com

Even after just 6 vintages, winemaker and owner Federico Curtaz, along with other owners Silvia Maestrelli and Roberto Silva, has created a winery which continually delivers some of the best wines made in Sicily. Of Gaja fame, Curtaz moved to Sicily after falling in love with one of the oldest vineyards in the region; Nerello Mascalese from Etna. The group bought it and now focus on producing the native varieties, Nerello and Nero d’Avola for the reds, and Carricante for the superb Etna Bianco. Founded in 2007 by winemaker Silvia Maestrelli, her husband, Roberto Silva, and winemaker Federico Curtaz, the Fessina Estate is located in the small village of Rovittello, about eight miles east of Randazzo. Given its distinct location, the terroir of the vineyards is composed of centuries-old lava deposits that yield strikingly individual wines in a class by themselves. In addition to the main estate, the winery includes two additional vineyards — a tribute to Sicily’s incredibly fertile, bountiful landscape. Tenuta di Fessina is a testament to the beauty and splen-dor of its surroundings: the magnificence of the region is reflected in the wines. Tenuta di Fessina is located in Rovittello, a small, picturesque village in the heart of Castiglione di Sicilia. The estate lies in the shadows of Mt. Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano, which adds to the mystique of this incredible property.

Martinez Marsala, Sicilia Established - 1866 Winemaker - Currently 3 generations of the Martinez family Bottles - 400,000 Website - martinez.it

When you first enter the courtyard at Martinez’ cellars on the outskirts of Marsala, and receive parking instructions from the octogenarian Domenico Martinez and his straw broom, you get more than an inkling of the soul of this treasure trove, founded in 1866 by Carlos Martinez. Here is almost the last of the true, family Marsala producers and nothing is done here in a hurry or for a quick result. They even remain a leading supplier of altar wine to the Catholic Church. This may speak as much about their survival skills in business, as to the richness of their heritage. The wines themselves are not just authentic, but fabulous, leading examples of a craft, or a series of crafts, which are slowly regaining recognition. The Marsalas are textbook, complex and almost always aged well beyond legal requirements for their DOC, but also clean, balanced and finishing beautifully with zip and the right grip. The Passito (dried grape) wines will surprise people with their depth and power and maybe stun for their value for money. You will probably never sneer at Marsala all’Uovo again, once you try the gorgeous, moorish,

Martinez Cremovo! These wines, and Martinez, are the real thing. These are wines with a sense of place.

The Jerry Thomas Project Torino, Rome & Alba Established - 2013 Website - distilleriaquaglia.it

A collaboration between Carlos Quaglia, Federico Ricatto and the famous Jerry Thomas Speakeasy bar in Rome, the del Professore range is a homage to ‘The Professor’, Jerry Thomas. These stunning and affordable vermouths and gins are currently used in some of the most prestigious bars in Rome, Paris and NYC. Careful blending of fine aromatic herbs and spices with high quality base wine are the simple but sought after ingredients for Quaglia’s formula. Both spend extended periods of time developing in oak barrels before being bottled under the distinctive labels. Conceived for the perfect Americano or Negroni, the Vermouth del Professore are finding their ways into the hearts of bartenders around the world, and for good reason. Once you taste these you’ll know why. The Gin del Professore Monsieur, with a more classic gin profile of juniper and citrus, and the Madame, with an extra layer of sweeter spiced aromas of cinnamon, vanilla and wild rose. Both gins represent the rediscovery of a lost style of gin production: the making of the prohibition era ‘Bathtub Gin’. Retracing the same techniques they use for their vermouth, the creation of the gin starts with blending a juniper distillate into an infusion of herbs and spices with the aim of obtaining a deep complexity of aromas. Neither gins are industrially filtered and therefore they maintain their original amber colour gained from the spice infusion.

Distilleria Marolo Barolo, Piemonte Established - 1977 Distiller - Paolo and Lorenzo Marolo Bottles - N/A Website - marolo.com

Paolo Marolo is the inspired orchestrator of grappa distillation, arranging harmonies of aroma and flavour through a sensitive balancing of technique and passion. Using his nose, his hands and his palate, he creates elegant variations on the theme of grappa, ensuring that each bottling from each year's harvests of grapes from various renowned wine regions and producers of Italy is original and unique. The packaging alone will be enough to create a following here, but the spirit really is something else. They are pure, refined and a true reflection of their varieties and terroirs, something which can only come from years of practice.

Founded in 1977 in Alba, Italy, proprietor and head distiller Paolo Marolo creates his grappa by following two simple rules: source superior, single varietal pomace and press it as soon as possible. Freshness is so essential to Paolo that he keeps his discontinuous “Bain Marie” copper stills running around the clock during the harvest season. The discontinuous distillation method is more expensive than the modern, automated alternative and requires a great deal of experience and confidence on the part of the distiller. However, this traditional approach is favoured because it allows him to manually control the pace and evolution of the distillation. Over the years, Paolo has successfully developed key relationships with wineries throughout Italy to secure the finest pomace for Grappa Marolo. His attention to detail has become legendary and as such he is considered a Master Grappaiolo

Meletti Ascoli Piceno, Le Marche Established - 1870 Owner - The Meletti Family Bottles - NA Website - meletti.it

For over 140 years, the Meletti family have been producing their famous Anisetta liqueur from their own distillate and locally grown star anise. Ascoli Piceno’s combo of Mediterranean climate and clayey soil are perfect for growing fine spices, and the anise has been part of the scenery for centuries. The family use much the same methods as were originally practiced, meaning a liqueur that is far from a mass produced product. Each of the elements are of the highest quality, and the family themselves are a pleasure to deal with. These are timeless, and find many uses in recipes and cocktails, as well as behind a bar.

Evangelista Liquori San Giovanni Teatina, Abruzzo Established - 1907 Owners - The Evangelista Family Bottles - NA Website - evangelistaliquori.com

Punch Abruzzese was first produced in a small and cold mountain village by the mayor of Borrello, Mr Evangelista. Its original use was as a warm drink, heated over the fireplace during winter, or even to cure a cold, legend has it that once word caught on of the mayor’s concoction, the whole town wanted some! It’s a masterly fusion of natural ingredients; rum, citrus fruits and coffee that has been handed down through generations, and these days it finds a home behind bars looking for a point of difference. Of course, the old Abruzzese still drink it every morning in the way it was originally intended.

Strega Liquori Benevento, Campania Established - 1860 Owners - The Alberti family Bottles - NA Website - strega.it

Strega Liqueur is made by extracting the essences of about 70 different kinds of rare herbs and spices, coming from Europe, Central America and the East—and made by the Alberti’s from the raw ingredients. Its characteristic golden colour comes from the remarkable saffron distillate portion. Maturing in oak barrels allows the components of this secret recipe to mature and mellow together. This remarkable formula jealously guarded, has been handed on through five generations of Albertis. This is a craft, not industrial beverage; every ingredient is stored in a large room inside the factory, dried and readied to be made into Strega liqueur.
