There was development of twin access and divided shaft in theLaurium silver mines of Greece (600 BC).In the Roman times, slaves waving palm fronds were used topromote air circulation.

Mine ventilation practices were illustrated and described inDe Re Metallica by Georgius Agricola, 1556. The bookdescribed horse and human powered centrifugal fans. Agricolaalso described the danger of blackdampand firedamp.

John Atkinson, a British mining agent presented his famouspaper On the Theory of the Ventilation of Mines in 1854.Atkinsons Equation still forms the basis for all mineventilation engineering.

The most notable feature has been the development ofcomputerized mine ventilation network analysis. This hasmade the prediction of fan requirements and airflowdistributions in complex mine ventilation circuits feasibleusing desk computers.
