Matakohe bridges upgrade funding u by Ayla Miller

The New Zealand Transport Agency has announced that funding has been allocated for planned upgrades to two single lane bridges in Matakohe.

Four of the ten single lane bridges promised to be upgraded during the Northland by-election have also been included in the 2015–18 NLTP and four of the remaining bridges may be considered in future plans.

Minister of Transport, Simon Bridges says, “the NZ Transport Agency has carried out investigations on ten of the one way bridges on various State highways in Northland and has approved funding for the Matakohe Hardies and Anderson, Kaeo and Taipa bridges.”

Matakohe campaigner Sue Reyland is pleased with the recent announcement saying, “it is all very positive. It has taken a long time to get to this stage and I’m confident it will be worth the wait.”

Sue and her daughter were involved in a head-on incident on the Anderson’s bridge in 2012, which spurred her campaign for the two one lane bridges to be made safer.

Chairman of the Northland Regional Transport Committee John Bain responded — “While we will now need

to take some time to work through the implications of the latest announcement in a bit more detail, Northland appears to have had a 20 per cent boost in the amount of funding for road maintenance, which compares favourably with the 15 per cent increase across the nation.

A detailed business case will be completed along with costing and additional information to confirm viability for construction funding. Detailed time frames for the next stages of planning are yet to be finalised. ¢

p Junior hockey is back on in Dargaville and the Fun Sticks put together two seven-a-side teams for a trip to Kaikohe. They will be continuing with Wednesday after school practice at the Dargaville High School turf from July 22 to August 26. “If any other primary or intermediate students wish to join us, we will be very welcoming,” says founder Bev Hart. “This is a huge step for us for rebuilding hockey in Dargaville,” says Northern Wairoa Western Sharks hockey chairwoman, Paula McInnes.

Fonterra helps local farmeru by Ann Morgan

As a result of a meeting between Fonterra’s site manager Rowan Hartigan and Otamatea HarbourCare’s Mark Vincent, a team of eight people from the Maungaturoto factory helped a local dairy farmer to plant a wetland area.

“Fonterra has a focus on the future, which is why it made sense for a few of us to come out for a couple of hours to help a farmer with some planting,” said the site’s environmental leader, Steve Gale.

“It is great to be able to support someone taking an extra step in responsible stewardship of the land our industry is built on.”

Farmer Stuart Brown said he was pleased to have people from Fonterra come out for the morning to lend a

hand. “They were a great bunch, and did a great job.”

Reflecting on the day, Mark Vincent noted a real cross-section of staff turned up.

“From administration and technical to operations and supervision, I saw a single team of people working well together,” he said.

“It was great to be associated with them. We planted nearly a thousand trees, in fact I had to lay out extras because they went so well.” ¢

Council versus ratepayers u by Ann Morgan

A court case that will determine the fate of Mangawhai ratepayers who have defaulted in payment is now the subject of a reserved decision by Justice De Ridder at the Whangarei District Court.

The Kaipara District Council is suing Mangawhai ratepayers chairman, Bruce Rogan, for $22,000 in back rates and penalties. He is the first of approximately 100 ratepayers the council is taking to court for withholding payment in protest at cost overruns in the Mangawhai wastewater scheme.

In his final submissions, the defendants’ lawyer Jeremy Browne claimed the council could not force payment because of alleged illegalities.

Judge de Ridder said he will need time to go through both cases before he can deliberate. There is no set time for the court case to progress. ¢ p MRR Chairman Bruce Rogan

Opening night: Alice in WonderlandThe Lions Club of Paparoa and the Rotary Club of Maungaturoto and Districts have banded together to support the opening night show of Alice in Wonderland performed by Otamatea Repertory Theatre.

The clubs bought all of the seats at a discounted rate and on-sold them at a modest profit. The funds raised are going to assist with the upgrading of the sound system and acoustics of the Centennial Community Hall at Maungaturoto.

The evening started with a few drinks supplied by the Country Club and nibbles prepared by Julie Lewis before settling into the show. The half-time break allowed the audience to have a hot drink, something to eat and to compare notes about the show thus far. At the end of the show a raffle was drawn, and the satisfied show goers drifted away into the night.

The Clubs would like to acknowledge and thank Easy Access Ltd, Maungaturoto Four Square, the Country

Club, Julie Lewis, Bica Coffee and many others for their support of this event.

Memorable songs and whimsical escapades highlight Alice’s journey, which culminates in a madcap encounter with the Queen of Hearts and her army of playing cards.

The Paparoa Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Maungaturoto and Districts would like to thank the Otamatea Repertory Theatre for the privilege of being involved with the opening night of your show.

The last old type overhead air break switch was replaced in Dargaville which completes a seven year project that not only replaced the aging and sometimes unreliable switches but also enabled a bigger overview of appropriate switch locations. The automation of some of these switches is continuing as a separate project.

The last of the 33kV fault-prone insulators were replaced in the Maungaturoto area as these were highlighted as having high potential risk of faults. This was a major insulator replacement programme.

Work is continuing on undergrounding for Western Hills widening and Mill Road / Nixon Street.

The current Western Hills widening project which involves power pole removal and undergrounding is underway with the second stage on the Western side just starting from a Northpower perspective.

The Mill Road/Nixon Street road works which also involves pole removal and undergrounding is 70% complete. The Northpower crews on these jobs want to thank the public for their patience.

We also want to say thank you to the people of Dargaville for their patience and assistance throughout Dargaville CBD 11kV upgrade project.

The final shutdown in the Dargaville CBD was completed to upgrade the line and as a part of this one circuit was re-routed to remove the impact to consumers from outages. This project ran from late 2014 and thanks to a great effort from Northpower’s crews the result will be a more reliable supply of electricity for locals.

New Zealanders are asked ‘what they stand for’ and have until July 16 to have their say, or suggest a new flag design. The flag consideration panel will decide which four flags we will choose from at the first postal referendum in November-December this year.

The final decision will be made by a second referendum in March 2016, when the nation will vote between keeping the current flag or the preferred alternative chosen.

The flag consider project was in Dargaville last week to inform the community of the options, and the standfor.co.nz website — the online tool which allows the public to have their say.

When the Kaipara Lifestyler spoke to members of the public, the general mood was against changing the flag.

Comments were made such as ‘don’t change what isn’t broken’, ‘we fought for our flag’, ‘we don’t need to change it’ and ‘stop wasting our money when it is needed elsewhere like Christchurch, and Wanganui’.

Grant Wikaira wanted to know “what else is going on in the government that we don’t know about while this

is happening,” and says “this is a distraction from other things.”

To take part in this referendum you must be correctly enrolled before voting starts. When you share what you stand

for you can also have your name etched on the new nation’s stainless steel flagpole which the chosen flag will fly on.

Wide range at Winter Art FairThe Dargaville Arts Association’s Winter Art Fair is now on at 107 Victoria Street, in the old ANZ building, open from 10am to 4pm until July 18.

There are well over 200 artworks to choose from and include greeting cards, textiles, woodwork, jewellery and painting.

“The range of art available is eclectic. There are so many different styles here,” said Dargaville Arts Association secretary Patricia Mortensen.

“The fair is an opportunity to continue to showcase what we do within the community and help raise our association’s profile.”

Also on display are Matariki themed paintings created by local children at Circus Kumarani’s recent Spirit of Matariki Festival. The paints were sponsored by Fosters Home Decorating, the canvases by the Dargaville Arts Assn and prizes by PGG Wrightson Real Estate. ¢

Volunteers are pricelessu by Ann Morgan

Volunteer week was about celebrating members of the community who give up their valuable time to help keep organisations afloat.

James Foster is one of these long time volunteers and has been involved in many causes over the years. Amongst other things, he is on the board of the Kaipara Community Health Trust, with 11 other volunteers from across the district. They manage the organisation to ensure health services are available locally for people in the community.

“I started volunteering because I couldn’t get full-time work for a while and had time on my hands. I didn’t want to sit around and look at the wallpaper — I get a lot of joy from helping others,” said Mr Foster. “There are scores of people in our community who have helped get things

going and in the past and keep things going now. We have the cinema, social and sports clubs, and there is a lady who visits people in the rest homes.”

The causes and names are too many to mention but Mr Foster says the list is endless.

“I take my hat off to these people, doing all sorts of different work for their own reasons and often are not noticed. They are all achieving solid work in the community, it is a good thing.

“This is real life and they are doing something worthwhile, they are valued and important. The community needs volunteers.” ¢

After five years commuting to Auckland from Paparoa, Gary Frazer of Frazer Fabrication Services 2008 Ltd has moved his 18-year-old business north.

Fraser Fabrication Services is a transport engineering company specialising in truck bodies as well as general engineering and is now located at the Paparoa County Depot Trust site.

With 35 years’ experience in the industry, Gary is keen to teach his trade to the next generation and will be looking to take on two apprentices.

“Someone gave me a chance when I was 15 and took me in. Now it is time to pass on my knowledge.”

Krasna Broodkoorn has recently received the Jenny Cocurullo Memorial Award from the Northern Wairoa Lions Club, presented annually to a club member in appreciation for the work they do behind the scenes.

“Krasna has been a very active member for many years and they appreciate all she does. She is a very big part of our club and fully deserves this award,” said past president Jean Johnson.

The award is in honour of Jenny Cocurullo, who was a charter member and past president. Her husband Tony donated the trophy when Jenny died, in respect of the hard work she did over the years for the community.

“Krasna helps us to keep a check on members, their health and welfare, and makes sure everyone is okay. She calls people if they haven’t been in contact for a while and sends out cards for birthdays and anniversaries or other occasions. What she does is extremely helpful for the community,” said newly elected president Judith Dysart.

“The Northern Wairoa Lions club is a service group who have made the commitment to donate the majority of funds raised to the local community. The funds come from the community and we give it back to the community,” said Ms Dysart.

The work for those at the front line of forestry was hard and arduous. The first job was to cut down the trees. Firstly a wedge shaped cut was made in front of the tree and metal wedges were then hammered in to lift the tree a little so it wouldn’t sit and pinch the saw.

Once felled, the tree had to be sawn into manageable sized logs to be transported out of the bush. Moving the logs was a difficult task, usually they were moved by hand, with timber jacks, animal strength, water force and locomotives. The timber then had to be milled and as demand increased the

technology improved, mills were built and exports began with settlements springing up around the mills.

Tidal power, steam and even stationary traction engines were used to drive the huge saws, some many metres across.

Health and safety was unknown; accidents were severe when they occurred, leading to the establishment of a hospital at Te Kopuru largely for the dangerous lumber trade.

Today, our local museums prominently feature kauri logging displays, letting the public appreciate what life was like for those hardy pioneers who made their fortune among the tall timber. ¢

At the time when Te Kopuru and Aratapu supported over five thousand souls, Auckland was a mere provincial settlement by comparison! In fact famous ‘Aucklander’ Sir John Logan Campbell made his fortune here on the

A man of many skillsHe came up from humble roots — a lad from Matakohe who was raised in the rugged pioneering age of the Kaipara’s settlement. From the kauri mills and gumfields of the north, he grew to become the first native-born prime minister of New Zealand in 1925–28.

Joseph’s father, Edward, hailed from long-established Herefordshire gentry, migrating to New Zealand with his younger brother Thomas in 1866. With help from a wealthy brother-in-law he leased land in Unuwhao on the Hukatere Peninsula in Northland.

The Coates family began a farming venture, and young Gordon grew up riding and managing stock, becoming a noted marksman as well as a statesman. Perhaps his involvement on the farm helped to foster his leadership qualities, which began to shine through early in his youth. His hands were always ‘dirty under the nails’ — a far cry from the aristocratic politics of England’s house of Lords.

When his father fell ill, Gordon stepped up to run the family farm with his brother Rodney.

It was around this time he began an active involvement with the Kaipara Agricultural and Pastoral Association,

the Otamatea County Council, and trained with the Otamatea Mounted Rifle Volunteers. He also served during World War 1 from 1916 to 1919, receiving a Military Cross for La Basseville in 1917 and a Bar for his leadership at Mailly-Maillet in 1918.

Returning from the Great war, Coates put his all into representing Kaipara, as well as holding the portfolios of Public Works, Native Affairs, Finance and — perhaps most importantly for an old soldier — he served as Minister of the Armed Forces and War Coordination in World War Two.

Coates died in his Wellington office in 1943, leaving behind his wife Marjorie and five children — as well as a proud legacy of service. ¢

Seeking the Kaipara’s ‘amber gold’When the Kaipara settlement was young, its riches were not in arable pasture land or in bountiful fisheries. It was the mighty Kauri which attracted the settlers here — and not just for its tall timber.

Kauri gum is the lifeblood — the sap — of the Kauri, a protective, sticky substance which grows over ‘wounds’ in the wood. As the tree’s bark is continually shed, the white-amber gum drops to the earth, leaving vast quantities of gum in the ground.

It has many uses, and in pre-European times it was prized for cooking and lighting, as well as for tau moko pigment and jewellery. The maori people made torches with it to attract fish at night, and even used it as a kind of chewing gum, at a time when dental care was largely unknown to Europeans.

European settlers soon fixed on the aesthetic and practical uses of the gum — prizing it as a hard-wearing lustrous furniture lacquer. Gum was originally collected by picking up exposed pieces on the ground. As this disappeared, gumdiggers probed into the ground

with spears, and dug it up with spades. The burgeoning shipbuilding trade used kauri gum to fashion watertight glues, and ironically, the versatile substance was also employed in making dentures.

The diggers’ evenings were spent cleaning the gum by scraping it with a knife. Storekeepers bought the gum and it was shipped to Auckland, where gum merchants cleaned it, graded it and

exported it. From 1850 to 1900, kauri gum was Auckland’s main export.

The industry continued into the 20th century but by the 1930s cheaper materials had been invented for making varnish and the price of kauri gum fell. By the 1940s the gum industry was coming to an end.

The Matakohe Kauri Museum gum display is the biggest exhibition of gum in the world, and contains records of a frontier age when this ‘amber gold’ formed the bedrock of our local economy. ¢

It’s stood at the heart of Dargaville since colonial times — when this historic tavern was the meeting place and ‘watering hole’ for thirsty foresters, sailors and gumdiggers.

The Northern Wairoa Hotel has a storied past, with many local myths and anecdotes centred around it. The second building to bear the name (the first perished in flames in the 1920s), the current Northern Wairoa is about to receive a facelift and a new lease of life, as new management seek to rekindle its glory days.

New publican Darryl comes from a strong hospitality background, with successful restaurant and backpackers businesses to his name and a positive plan for this Dargaville icon.

Already he’s hired a new chef and re-staffed the restaurant, bringing back hearty tavern-style meals to the Northern Wairoa’s victorian-era ‘ballroom’.

Having already sampled the succulent pan-fried scallops wrapped in bacon, and the old-fashioned beer-battered fish and chips here, we can confidently state that fans of beautifully presented traditional fare will be well pleased.

There’s more in store as a whole menu rolls out, starting this week with the promise of slow-cooked BBQ pork ribs, sizzling pork chops and of course the welcome return of big, succulent steaks to their rightful place on the table.

Going forward, we are told to expect new seasonal dishes, a distinct lunch menu with affordable options for a midday bite, and the transition of the current bar facilities to a more dedicated

The bold styling of the Can Am Commander just looks right in such a vivid colour, in the same way that a Lamborghini Aventador misses the point if it’s tricked out in beige. Like the Italian fighting bulls, Can Am’s machines are styled aggressively, and they pack a punch of rotax-V-twin power to match those visual cues. The Commander 800 DPS does even more. To stretch the supercar analogy, just like recent Lambos with their Audi-derived underpinnings, the new Commander adds a clever

leavening of technology under the roar and visual thunder, making things safer, more comfortable and more practical for the driver.

In the case of the Commander 800 DPS, this means tackling some tough terrain indeed. While fellow Can Ams such as the howlingly accelerative Maverick 1000 Turbo are made to scamper over sand, mud and scree in full race mode, the Commander is made to slog through a hard day’s work on the farm. In these conditions, making work seem less arduous is the key to its success.

A clever, high-riding suspension system with torsional trailing arms in the back and dual a-arms in the front is coupled with a low centre of gravity, that big liquid cooled 8-valve v-twin mill lurking in the centre, just like the donk in the aforementioned Aventador.

It’s been set up with drive control and ease of clearance and cornering in mind, with an auto-locking front diff thrown into the mix for nimble performance in the rough stuff.

But the party piece of this model is the DPS, a three-mode, driver selectable dynamic power steering system which allows the operator to choose how much lock the steering wheel applies

on different surfaces and accounting for different speeds. That means a lighter touch from lock to lock in tight spots, and a more comfortable ride in the open. And all that adds up to a machine which is well worth a test drive, if you value a farming machine that is rugged enough to handle hard yakka, but lets you go home at the end of the day feeling the little bit more relaxed. ¢

It’s hard to believe that summer is on its way — but with the shortest day behind us it’s a long downhill run toward sunny weather and the associated pleasures of a northern sunny season.

For those with a classic car or bike in the shed, this means it’s time for a timely wake up call. Because these rainy weekends are the perfect time to pick up the tools and throw off the tarps, getting into the shed to prepare that old-school ride for a summer of cruising.

Classics come in many forms, from the hotrods and muscle cars of the American golden age through to more recent Japanese JDM machines now finding their place among the roll of honour. One thing remains the same for owners of everything from Knucklehead Harleys through to twin-turbo Skylines. Meticulous work from the engine bay to the final detailing of paint and accessories is an obsession for classic owners, and sometimes it becomes necessary to call in the professionals when the job looks like a tough one.

The advent of international ordering, on the internet and beyond, means that parts once thought impossibly rare are now often only a click or a catalogue page away. Even in a small town like Dargaville, stores such as DAE carry the full range of Edelbrock, Moon and Mickey Thompson parts, without the need for a cavernous warehouse.
