Traditional show fare of sheep shearing, alongside new displays and attractions spelt success for the North Kaipara Agricultural Association’s biggest Paparoa A and P show yet. Record numbers of trade sites, activities and visitors were at the show over the weekend. “The organising committee really put in a lot of effort this year and from the feedback we have received, it was worth it,” said treasurer, Gary Christie Photo courtesy of Gilbert DeGroot

Northland by-election details set by Paul Campbell
The Northland by-election sparked by the resignation of National MP Mike Sabin, following allegations he is involved in a police investigation, will be held on March 28.
Mr Sabin held the safe National seat by some 9,000 votes and the party has now opened nominations to select its new candidate.
As it does so, speculation remains that list MP, Winston Peters, may throw his New Zealand First hat in
the ring, while defeated Tai Tokerau MP Hone Harawira says he won’t be standing.
National party president Peter Goodfellow, says that by-elections traditionally see lower turnouts and smaller margins.
“We will not be taking Northland for granted and my message to the successful candidate will be to prepare to put in the hard yards. We’ve got a big job ahead.”

The ride of a lifetime
Riding for renovations
Rainbow riches?
Jeremy from the Netherlands and Michael from Australia did not realise their pushbike adventure would take them on a bus ride to Pouto, four hours fishing on a boat and a long 50km ride back to town. “We didn’t even know what fishing on a boat was, we had no idea and ended up being invited to go on a boat and, it was so much fun,” said Michael. Finally they got on their bikes and rode the beach from Pouto to Glinks Gully where they asked for directions to Dargaville. “That was the best scenery we have ever seen but it is a long way to ride” said Jeremy. “Do you know where the closest shop is, we need a drink!”
A Dalmatian Club fundraising ride along Ripiro Beach attracted 39 riders from as far afield as Mangonui, Whangarei and Otorohanga. “We enjoyed the experience of the west coast terrain and views along the local farm land and beach,” said organiser Venessa Anich. Funds raised will go to toward the club renovations.
Long summer evenings — and not a drop of rain in the air, but nevertheless there must be pots of gold in Whakapirau, judging from this rainbow, snapped from Pahi, just across the water. “The trouble was, Whakapirau is about half a mile away as the crow flies, but 30 odd miles by road. It would be too late to find any riches,” quipped our photographer.

Love is StrangeAfter nearly four decades together, Ben (John
Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) finally tie the knot in an idyllic wedding ceremony in lower Manhattan. But when George loses his job soon after, the couple must sell their apartment and - victims of the relentless New York City real estate market - temporarily live apart until they can find an affordable new home. While George moves in with two cops (Cheyenne Jackson and Manny Perez) who live down stairs, Ben lands in Brooklyn with his nephew (Darren Burrows), his wife (Marisa Tomei), and their temperamental teenage son (Charlie Tahan), with whom Ben shares a bunk bed. While struggling with the pain of separation, Ben and George are further challenged by the intergenerational tensions and capricious family dynamics of their new living arrangements.
American SniperChris Kyle was nothing more than a Texan
man who wanted to become a cowboy, but in his thirties he found out that maybe his life needed something different, something where he could express his real talent, something that could help America in its fight against terrorism. So he joined the SEALs in order to become a sniper. After marrying, Kyle and the other members of the team are called for their first tour of Iraq. Kyle’s struggle isn’t with his missions, but about his relationship with the reality of the war and, once returned at home, how he manages to handle it with his urban life, his wife and kids.
Horrible Bosses 2Fed up with answering to higher-ups, Nick,
Dale and Kurt decide to become their own bosses by launching their own business. But a slick investor soon pulls the rug out from under them. Outplayed and desperate, and with no legal recourse, the three would-be entrepreneurs hatch a misguided plan to kidnap the investor’s adult son and ransom him to regain control of their company.

Cliff House open againPaparoa’s historic Cliff House which dates from the late 1880’s is lived in again after lying empty and on the market for more than a decade.
The ‘sold’ sign appeared just before Christmas, to the surprise of the village community and the windows and doors opened for new owners Tony Bozzard and Charlee Kerr.
“Like many people, we had always admired the old homestead, and it’s place in the village,” said Tony, an Auckland consultant.
“One wet Sunday afternoon in October we drove up from Wellsford to Maungaturoto, for a coffee, and then onto Paparoa to see if the old antique shop was still running in the former National Bank of New Zealand Building. Of course that had long gone.
“We saw the ‘for sale’ sign outside Cliff House and rang the agent. We were immediately captivated by the property and the significance of the family and building to the area. It was essentially a 125 years-plus time capsule of one family’s history and life, and has beautiful bones. With its kauri ceilings, panelled walls, wide verandas, and old oak tree, we decided it was a home we wanted to live in and restore.
“We were very fortunate to be able to personally meet with the Cliff descendants, discuss our plans for renovation, and move in just before Christmas, to celebrate with our family.”
Tony was born in Worcestershire, England, and Charlee is South American having been born in Dutch Guyana and

Minister invites local views by Paul Campbell
The Associate Minister for Local Government, Louise Upston, says she is happy to hear the views of a wider range of Kaipara residents, following her whirlwind visit to Dargaville and Whangarei last week.
She came here for face-to-face meetings with an invited group of business and farming leaders as part of a fact-finding mission on political transition in Northland.
“As a new minister and in her role as Associate Minister of Local Government, Minister Upston wanted to get a first hand view as part of her new responsibilities,” said her press secretary, Libby O’Brien.
She added that Ms Upston “was grateful to have the opportunity to meet with members of the community in Kaipara last week.
“While it wasn’t possible for the minister to speak to everyone in the community, she is interested in hearing people’s views.
“Those who would like to also have their say can email her at [email protected].”
Ms Upston has responsibility for issues relating to Kaipara governance and is considering options for the transition to full local democracy, with the district currently run by commissioners.
Associate local government minister, Louise Upston would like to hear from residents
raised in the Netherlands. They have been in New Zealand for 25 and 35 years respectively. Tony is currently a marketing consultant in Auckland, and Charlee was an Auckland based real estate agent before assuming the ‘honour’ of project manager at Cliff House.
“We have both been struck by how friendly the people around the area are, and the warmth of the village community. We have also discovered how ‘polarising’ two overgrown camellia bushes can be, when they are pruned for the first time in many years.”

Museum hits the road by Paul Campbell
The Kauri Museum has found a new way to spread the word about it’s collections and programmes — using a bus, more usually the vehicle employed to bring visitors to Matakohe.
In collaboration with Maungaturoto’s Brooks Motors, the museum is now displayed on the streets of Auckland, with regional visitors in mind.
The sign-wr i t ten charter bus is currently working the Auckland CBD to International Airport circuit.
The vinyl graphic, designed by Think Tank Creative of Waipu, was applied with the aid of a 4.5 metre high doorway at Easy Access Company at Maungaturoto, which opened after hours for a work platform to be set up. An hour later the museum was ‘on the road’ taking its message to the masses.
“The swift and successful outcome was reliant on the combined goodwill and generosity of the three local businesses,” said museum

Iwi initiative to protect kauri by Joanne Speechly
The decision by Northland iwi Te Uri o Hau to place a rahui over two mountains near Kaiwaka is being supported by the Department of Conservation.
The temporary access ban has been applied to help prevent the spread of kauri die-back disease.
The disease was discovered in kauri trees on Pukekaroro late last year. Nearby Pukeareinga is also included in the ban, although it remains clear of the disease at this stage.
“DOC is taking an active approach to managing kauri dieback,” says DOC’s Northern regional services director Chris Jenkins. “We provide boot-spray facilities at popular track entrances,
provide public education on how to reduce the spread of the disease and contribute to a multi-agency effort.
“We accept and support all practical measures that may help curb the spread of this disease and the action by Te Uri o Hau in applying customary practice measures makes good sense.”
Te Uri o Hau own the top of both the culturally important mountains.
More information on Kauri Dieback can be found on www.kauridieback.co.nz.
Northern regional services director Chris Jenkins retires this month after 27 years with DOC. He says it has been a privilege

Reviving local athletics by Joanne Speechly
Sport Northland is keen to see a revival of athletics clubs in the Kaipara and a small group in Dargaville is making some positive inroads.
A committed contingent competed at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track & Field and Road Championships in December and are due to start training again this week.
“These athletes represented their school with distinction, pride and determination and performed to the best of their abilities,” says coach David Hutchinson.
“I feel privileged to have been able to work with such a fine group of individuals and hope we can add to the squad this year.
“Dargaville High School have their athletics day coming up and from there, hopefully some students will qualify for the Lower North competition and eventually advance to the North Island event.”
David, who has a Diploma in Sport Management and is an accredited sprints and relays coach with Athletics
Competitors cross the line in the 200 metres event of the Secondary Schools Championships
New Zealand, is currently working with Dargaville High School students but says he also sees potential in younger children, including his grandson.
“He’s actually one of the reasons that I would like to rejuvenate athletics — if I work with that age group now, I could be taking them to regional and national events in the future.
“There are a number of fine young athletes out there and they all deserve to have quality training and an opportunity to compete in the Colgate Games, regardless of where they come from.
“If we get a regular club going, it will give young ones the grounding they need to go further.”
For more information on local athletics or how to get a club started contact Sport Northland community sport senior advisor Roxanne Kelly: 09 439 3188 or 027 477 1752.
House has new home by Ayla Miller
New child care centre, Kaipara Kids Club, had several options when faced with an unwanted house on their new building site in Maungaturoto.
One option was to give it to the fire brigade to burn it. Another was to demolish it, keeping the good kauri wood and the third was to give it away.
Kaipara Kids Club spokeswoman, Natasha Lee says she didn’t want to destroy the 127 year old villa.
“I just thought it seemed wrong as it had been someone’s home.”
The building has now been relocated to Bickerstaffe road in Maungaturoto.
“We are really happy it has stayed local.”
“People asked us why we didn’t gift it to the community so everyone can enjoy it but I just thought it would cost the community money to look after it. So we decided to put it on Facebook.”
“For a week my phone rang constantly and we ended up with three people who were really interested in it.”
“I told them the first person who could organise for it to be removed, could have it.”
The old house, originally at 182 Hurndall street, will be replaced with two classrooms.
The 127 year old house has been relocated to it’s new section in Maungaturoto

Clubrooms get a makeover by Ann Morgan
Wellsford Memorial RSA is expanding its clubrooms and a $350,000 construction project is under way.
The new 110m² extension will accommodate a sports area, with pool, snooker, shuffleboard and darts, a separate children’s area, a deck for alfresco dining and a new toilet block.
“This will give us more seating space in the dining area and the new children’s room will make our club more family friendly,” says club secretary Vic Caira. “We would love more families to utilise our premises and to have somewhere to come and socialise.
“Another new addition is the memorial wall. We will have brass name plaques available for purchase, so people can remember club members
who have passed away — it adds a personal touch.”
The money for the extension, has been raised by the sale of a section and fundraising activities. “We want people to see this venue as a place to come and relax. The RSA is not just for service people, it is for the whole community.”
“The extension will be named after club patron, Les Jenkins as ‘The Jenkins Extension’. He has just turned 90 and helped to build the original RSA building, so the committee decided it was fitting to name it after our founding member.”
The committee hopes to have the project completed by Anzac Day.

The Creative Communities Scheme provides support for a wide range of arts projects and creates opportunities for local communities to participate in a diverse range of artistic endeavours.
Kaiwaka illustrator and graphic designer, Andy Griffiths, has been a recipient of funding for the past two rounds. He has used the grant to run a series of successful comic art and cartooning workshops called Toonskool for Children.
“When I first found out about the scheme, I wasn’t sure whether these workshops would be considered for funding, so I rang one of the administrators to find out more,” says Andy. “She said, ‘It sounds fantastic’, gave me some pointers and we went from there.
“The grant is awarded to projects on the basis that they of an artistic nature and will benefit young people in the community in some way. Here in New Zealand, there is a lot of focus on sports but there aren’t the same avenues for kids with an artistic bent — especially in smaller towns — these workshops however, fill that gap and provide opportunities.
“Personally, the funding has allowed me to put in time and effort into designing the workshops, so I can make them really fun for everyone. A lot of energy goes into research, lesson planning and the creation of resources and on top of that, there is the expense of materials and venue hire. The funding gives me the backing I need.”
Applications close at 4.30pm on Friday, February 27. The application form and further information can be found at www.kaipara.govt.nz, under grants and funding. Contact Kaipara District Council’s CCS administrator Annie van der Plas on 0800 727 059 if you need any advice on your application.

Hit the trails for a good cause by Andy Bryenton
This year’s Maungaturoto Primary School Trail Ride fires up on Sunday February 15th, promising a day of off-road fun for the whole family.
This yearly event has been a top spot on the local calendar for many years, showcasing some great scenery and challenging trails while at the same time raising funds for small Kaipara town’s young students.
The Trail ride takes place this year on the rolling contours of Don and Jackie McKay’s farmland, which they have kindly opened to riders for this worthy cause. The McKays are a strong community-minded family and Maungaturoto

KAIPARA HEARTLANDPrimary School thank them for the use of their farm for this fundraiser for the school. Riders will certainly be thanking them as well, when they see the range of courses and challenges on offer this weekend.
The basic course will feature open farm land, with wide-open transitions and easy gradients. In addition, there’s a more challenging ‘expert only’ course, and an ‘expert only’ two wheeler section just for those on serious motocross bikes.
The terrain is open sheep and beef farmland, which has a few sections of bush. Riders will traverse a scenic 35 kilometre main loop with three short cuts home.
For the kids there are two fully supervised kid’s tracks, one which is a learners lap and the other an ‘advanced rider’ loop for those who have been in the saddle since the time they could
walk! Those who have already seen the planned route for these junior zones have called it the best junior track ever for the event.
It all begins at 9am on Sunday the 15th, just outside of town in Whakapirau Road. So pack your boots and helmet, tune up your engine, and come along for a day of off-road action.

Kids get a kickstart by Ayla Miller
After being involved with a similar initiative in the UK, Ruawai College principal Glynis Woodhead, has decided to take advantage of the Kickstart breakfast programme organised by Fonterra and Sanitarium.
Glynis estimates about 30 students will come along each morning for their free bowl of Weetbix and milk which started on Monday, February 9.
“It’s not always because the students don’t have the resources to have breakfast,” she says.
“Sometimes it is just because they haven’t got themselves organised or have to be dropped off at school quite early.”
Supervised by senior students and staff volunteers, the breakfasts will run every school day as long as there is continued interest. “It is well known and researched that students who don’t have breakfast have less concentration,” Glynis says.
The school will monitor the student demand for breakfasts and Fonterra and Sanitarium will adjust their deliveries accordingly.
“Some staff have suggested they would like to bring along excess fruit from their own gardens to add to the breakfast’s and in winter the school will provide hot Milo,” she says.
Glynis Woodhead is hopeful that her students will jump onboard with the new Kickstart breakfast programme offered at Ruawai College

The ramifications of settlementThe ANZ Bank has reached a settlement over the interest rate swaps issue with the Commerce Commission and the Financial Markets Authority and it is the view of Farmers of New Zealand that affected farmers may need specialist legal advice before accepting the ANZ Bank offer.
Farmers of New Zealand and our legal advisor, John Waugh of Daniel Overton and Goulding have followed with interest the recent agreements reached where that bank has agreed to compensate its farming customers in respect of alleged misleading conduct in the sale by them of interest rate swaps. We understand that negotiations with another bank continues.
Though often each farmer has his own story, the central theme is that the interest rate swaps were marketed and promoted by ANZ’s Financial Markets and Rural teams as ‘fixed rate’ loans.
This was in a period of some uncertainty as to where interest rates were actually heading and as floating rates fell to an all time low, farmers found they were locked into loans where
the bank actually increased, or had the ability to increase, the ‘fixed rates’.
Farmers of New Zealand believes there is no doubt these farmers suffered losses. The essence of the agreement between the Commerce Commission and the ANZ is that the Commerce Commission has concluded that the banks’ ‘conduct was, or was likely to be misleading’.
ANZ for its part, whilst agreeing to make a payment of some $18 million, has for a variety of reasons disagreed with the findings against it and they have denied they were in fact culpable of misleading conduct.
Their reasons included for example that the Commerce Commission’s conclusions —
• ‘have not been tested in Court’ and
• ‘it would not be liable for any fines, penalties, refunds or damages at law, whether under any Act or any other legislation, regulation or rule of law’.FNZ suggests these are brave words
by the ANZ.If that was truly the banks’ position
we are of the view that the ANZ should have welcomed the opportunity to have received public exoneration in a defended hearing in court.
Before this announcement was made by the Commerce Commission, Daniel Overton and Goulding had already considered this matter for farming groups involved with ANZ and had issued an opinion to the effect that there was probable cause of action.
We are also not convinced, based upon our investigations, that all relevant matters have been fully spelt out in the Settlement Agreement with ANZ. A back of the envelope calculation indicates a payout on average of $100,000 for the 179 farming groups involved on the basis of this being a full and final settlement.
Farmers will not know their actual position until they receive a letter from
Northington and Partners some time before the end of April 2015. This letter will set out each party’s ‘entitlement’.
They will then have 70 working days, being 31⁄2 months, to decide to accept or not on a full and final basis.
Even if farmers choose to accept the offer they will not receive any payment until September 2015. That’s nine months from the date of the announcement!
So what process should affected people go through in deciding to accept or not?
Legal advisor John Waugh of Daniel Overton and Goulding will be on the Farmers of New Zealand Field Days site on Saturday February 28, to provide a free no obligation initial consultation for farmers affected by swap loans.
They can also be contacted by email or phone or through Bill Guest at Farmers of New Zealand.
FNZ believes it is important for all farmers involved to collectively seek specialist legal advice if they believe the above settlements with the respective banks have left them financially short-changed.

A dog’s tail …
It’s that time of yeer agin“Well dog, I hate ta tell you, but
Sharlene’s mum will be commin’ up ta look after tha proppity and feed ya for a wile.”
Me an Boss was over at the croppin’ block checkin on the korn, after we hada reel grate day or three of rain.
“Wasn’t a million dollar rain,” seda Boss. “But it’s got this korn rompin’ along eh?”
Eye hada think about that. I never seen korn rompin’ along, not like sheeps eh? Korn stands still alla time. Heh Heh. Eye know what tha Boss meens.
So Mum’s comin’ up. That meens it’s that time of yeer again. It’s Feeld Daze time in Dargyville. Boss an’ Sharlene will take off ta town an’ stay atta pub, and go ta Feeld Daze. Sharlene will catch up with alla fashins, an’ look at cars
and stuff. Boss musta seen me thinkin’. “Yep, we will be away fer a nite or two, and gunna leeve you in charge. Keep an eye ona sheep, ana cattil beests, ana korn too.
“You’ll be rite for a feed — I know wot Mum gets up too. Last Feeld Daze ya put on a bitta wait.”
Rumbled! Mum give’s me reel good tucker, leff over roast, an’ kasserolls, an’ korned beef. But eye don’t havta wurry ‘cos when Boss sez anything, Mum just sez “Yes CHARLES ina loud voice an’ Boss shuts up. So good tucker times is commin.
But there’s only one problim. Afta Feeld Daze. Boss will spend up large ta keep Sharlene happy, but I seen him comin’ back fruma show fer a few yeers now.
Yep, I also meen look unner the woolshed time again!
Boss came home las’ yeer wivva tray ofa ute piled up wiv’ stuff he rekind we needed ona farm.
Rememba that automaik gate opena and closer wot didint work. That’s cosa Boss forgot we didint hava electrikery connected ata road gate anyway. Well, yep, it’s still unner the woolshed frum last yeer.
And that home brew and booze distillin’ kit, He still reckins he neva has enuff time ta get it orginised an’ up and runnin’, cos he always has ter be fixin’ fences and clearin’ out dams, an’ dockin lams, and so on. An’ on.
It usually happins wen Sharlene is lookin’ around tha showgrouns an’ stoppin’ off fer a kupptee wiv’ sum other ladies, wen’ tha Boss stops off ata farmer’s bear tent. Kupla ours later an’ he starts wandrin’ roun’ wiva check book. I reckin thats wen he gits inta trubbil. Eye woner wot this yeer will bring.
But ina meentime, I’ll wait ata kattil stop fer Mum ta arrive. She likes it wen’ I make a fuss. An’ that makes sure I get some treets, and roast cracklin, an’ lef’ over chops, an… can’t wait tilla Boss and Sharlene head off, eh readas!
