Nashville, where we are headquartered, is lucky to have a great, independent, general bookstore called Parnassus Books. The co-owner, Ann Patchett, is more famous as an author than as a bookseller. However, she is a great bookseller.

Ann named as her favorite book of 2014, Deep Down Dark: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine, and the Miracle That Set Them Free (recounting the ordeal of the survivng Chilean miners who were trapped underground). Ann has also picked it as the first selection for the new Nashville Public Radio Morning Edition Book Club, Morning Edition Reads.

When I first heard about the book, it never occurred to me that it would be something we would want to carry, much less feature. But you will find it in this month’s Kainos, and I hope that you will be intrigued, as I was, to take a look.

Hector Tobar is a wonderful writer. I believe that the mixture of his talents as a newsman (he is a Pulitzer Prize winner for journalism) and as a novelist truly contribute to setting this story apart. He enables you to understand what happened below the ground, how the men endured and survived—even as they believed they were living in their tomb.

So—thank you, Ann, for directing me to this wonderful book. And, as always, thanks to you—the Kainos faithful. I hope the new year brings you nothing but peace and joy and plenty of time to read.
