USUALLY AT THIS POINT WE REFLECT

on what went down over the last couple of months but we have swiftly arrived at a time where we are looking back at another year almost past.

People are already using the phrase “shopping days to Christmas” as a volume of time measurement with the result being November’s Jack Savoretti and Alexander O’Neal show tickets already becoming more sought after than a next generation games console to a kid.

The rush has begun as this years final couple of months are packed with artists who need no introduction that many would give an arm or leg to see as up close and personal as is only possible here.

From Femi Kuti, Dub Pistols and Cornell Campbell in November into a month long Christmas party with Da Lata returning to the stage, Jocelyn Brown, The Brand New Heavies, Jon B and Roy Ayers and The Blockheads throughout December.

We all have our favourite moments for the year some of our personal highlights include performances by the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Trevor Nelson, Louie Vega, Candi Staton, Teedra Moses, The Twang and the Eglo Records showcase. We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

SUBSCRIBE NOWThe Jazz Cafe brochure is a bi-monthly publication brought to you from the team behind the venue. The venue has been delivering the best in hip hop, soul, R&B, disco, funk, dance, world and everything in between since 1990.

SMERINS ANTI-SOCIAL CLUBBristol-based eight-piece owing much of its success to the band’s unique energy, which comes from mashing together influences ranging from ’thirties swing to heavy dub, funk and drum’n’bass and playing the resulting sound with a combination of skilled musicianship and punk-rock attitude.

This year Smerin’s Anti-Social Club followed the success of their debut single ‘Doctor Who’ with the release of the highly anticipated debut long player ‘Primordial Cordial’. Tunde’s first new material in over eight years suggests that there is more than may have initially met the eye. ‘Diamond In A Rock’ is a more soulful, personal and eclectic offering than his prior work. Of going it alone he believes “Now is when I need to really truly say what I want to say, the way I want to say it...”TUNDE.CO.UK

FEMI KUTI & THE POSITIVE FORCE

Not satisfied with just being the King’s heir, Femi has always been committed to redefining Afrobeat for new generations. In ‘85 he put together The Positive Force band and during the 90’s he’d achieved recognition away from the vast shadow cast by his father.

His LPs from 98’s ‘Shoki’ to 2008’s ‘Day By Day’ are evidence of how this charismatic bandleader streamlined Afrobeat’s sound, making it punchier, more immediate, more up front and personal. It goes without saying that his contribution to world music is why Afrobeat is current and relevant.FEMIKUTI.TV

TONBRUKET

Swedish band Tonbruket formed during the 1990s with bassist Dan Berglund and guitarist Johan Lindström and keyboardists Marti Hederos and drummer Andreas Werliin are stars of coming together from their respective jazz or alt-rock bands.

The marriage of rock and jazz isn’t easy, but Tonbrucket don’t fall into the trap of indulging in flashy solos or speed-freak machismo. Theirs is a ‘less is more’ approach, sticking closely to the essence of a composition’s tone, melody and groove. Perhaps accidentally Berglund refers to the tracks as ‘songs’ even though there are no vocals.TONBRUKET.SE

MYRON & E WITH SOUL INVESTIGATORS & GENE DUDLEY GROUPPLUS DJ DOM SERVINI (WAH WAH 45S)

Myron & E’s debut ‘Broadway’ dropped this summer on Stones Throw. The Soul Investigators provided demos from overseas with the duo stationed on the west coast writing the lyrics and singing all the vocals. E has a practice of sending YouTube links of classic soul and R&B songs to the band to provide inspiration for recreating that vibe. One such link was to Edwin Starr’s ‘Running Back And Forth’. The Soul Investigators responded with ‘Everyday Love’. Other attention grabbers from the LP are ‘If I Gave You My Love’ and ‘Clap Sing’.

TUESDAY 3 DECEMBER £22.50

THEA GILMORE Thea Gilmore’s career is one of the great UK case stories for artists that go against the grain. Once told by two A&R men that she had “missed her moment” she also famously refused to sign to major record labels, refused to work with a famous dance remix team and refused to say she was sleeping with a soap star in order to gain tabloid exposure. In 2003 she hit the UK charts for the first time with her 4th album “Avalanche” and the hit singles “Juliet” and the aptly titled “Mainstream”.

WISDOM OF CROWDSWISDOM OF CROWDS is the new album from an exciting new project featuring Bruce Soord from The Pineapple Thief with Jonas Renkse from Katatonia.

Originally written with Renkse’s voice in mind, Soord sought out the acclaimed Katatonia vocalist to complete the compositions and release the music to the masses.

Despite the rigorous schedules of The Pineapple Thief and Katatonia, the two musicians were eventually able to connect. Both artists are currently enjoying unparalleled success with their main bands.

During December 2013, Wisdom of Crowds will embark on their debut European tour.

JOCELYN BROWN True and living Disco Soul diva, Jocelyn Brown’s voice is the driving force of over twenty club hits as a vocalist with Musique, Inner Life, Cerrone and Salsoul Orchestra.

Her powerful and distinctive voice gained her solo recognition in the 80s with Jocelyn appearing as a backing singer in the Bette Midler movie ‘Divine Madness’ followed by the release of ‘Somebody Else’s Guy’ and ‘Love’s Gonna Get You’.

The sampling of her voice on Snap’s ‘I Got The Power’ and the lead vocal to Incognito’s ‘Always There’ are also examples of her voice’s durability.
