We praise You for Your unequaled greatness. Thank You for the year behind us and for the year ahead. Help us in Your new year, God, to fret less and laugh more. To teach our children to laugh by laughing with them. To teach others to love by loving them. Knowing, when Love came to the stable in Bethlehem, He came for us. So that Love could be with us, and we could know You. That we could share Love with others. Help us, God, to hear Your love song in every sunrise, in the chirping of sparrows in our backyards, in the stories of our elders, and in the fantasies of our children. Help us to stop and listen to Your love songs, so that we may know You better and better. We rejoice in the world You loved into being. Thank You for another new year and for new chances every day. We pray for peace, for light, and for hope, that we might spread them to others. Forgive us for falling short this past year. We leave the irreparable past in your hands, and step out into the unknown New Year knowing You will go with us. We accept Your gift of a New Year and we rejoice in what’s ahead, depending on You to help us do exactly what You want. I say it again, we rejoice! In Jesus name, Amen. UPCOMING STUDIES Rev. Matt Rawle will host an eight-week Disciple Bible Study series titled “Invitation to Romans” on Tuesdays from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Anderson Hall. Course books are $12 each and can be purchased in the church office. It is difficult to overstate the importance of Romans in Christian tradition. Some of the great formers and re-formers of church teach- ing were themselves formed by their reading of Romans. As a result, Paul’s teachings in Romans come to us mediated through the history of the church’s interpretations of his letter. Participants will learn to have their own interpretive conversation with the text itself, in spite of centuries of commentary on the text. One of the aims of this study is to invite us into conversation around several key themes: (1) Paul’s emphasis on communal salvation; (2) the centrality of God’s righteous- ness; and (3) the relationship between Jews and Gentiles and the relationship of both to God. Interested persons can reg- ister at the Welcome Center, Reception Area or visit our website. Malachi: A Love That Never Lets Go written by Lisa Harper is an eight-session women’s Bible study that gives a fresh perspective on the book of Malachi. More than a book based on tithing, this study focuses on God’s mercy, providing hope in the security that even on our worst day, God doesn’t walk away from us and His love for us is not determined by our perfor- mance. Rev. Kathy Wafer will lead the series Wednesdays, begin- ning January 16. Two sessions are offered: 10-11:30 a.m. or 6-7:30 p.m. Childcare is avail- able for the evening session. Series books are $14 each. Register at the Welcome Center, Reception Area or visit our website. A NEW YEAR PRAYER You are a unique mas- terpiece, created by God. Discovering your S.H.A.P .E. (Spiritual Gifts, Heart, Abili- ties, Personality, Experiences) will help you discover God’s unique purpose for your life based on the way God has shaped you. FROM THE BUSINESS OFFICE

This week-end, I have the privilege to take the Celebration Singers to Dallas on our first win-ter retreat. Why a retreat? Well, I am so glad you asked!

First, I can-not emphasize enough that having an active youth choir at a church is uncommon. This retreat will help the youth, chaperones, Mary, and me continue to develop our rela-tionship with each other. Sec-ond, we will stay at another United Methodist congrega-tion. This will remind us that the United Methodist Church is a connected denomina-tion. While Arapaho UMC

is a different church with its own traditions in another confer-ence, Broadmoor and Arapaho are still linked. Third, Arapaho UMC is starting a youth choir. The Celebration Singers will not only make new friends, but will set an example

of what an established youth choir is like. Finally, we will gain new experiences. My friend, Brian Hehn, will lead us in a weekend of worship, rehearsals, and the learning of new instruments.

This is an exciting time for the Celebration Singers! Please keep us in your prayers this weekend.

King Cake deliveries On Sunday, January 6 from

5-7 p.m. the youth will de-liver King Cakes to local first responders as a ‘thank you’ for serving our community.

M.A.S.H. gatheringThe “Meeting At Some-

one’s House” event will be held at the home of Wesley and Barbara York, from 5-7 p.m. on January 13. During this time we will be looking at the possibilities in 2013. Are there new things that God wants you to be doing in the new year? Are there things that God is calling you to stop doing in the new year? This will be a great time to refocus on the things of God and to feel the support of friends.

Movie NightOn January 20, we will

watch The Avengers in the

gym. This will be a great time to kick back, relax and be revived with friends. The movie has a run time of 2 hours and 30 minutes, so UMY will go from 5-8 p.m. There will be a short discus-sion based on the movie. Please notice the time change!

Spring Kick OffFamilies are invited to

participate in this night of fun and games while gain-ing helpful information on upcoming youth events.

Also, attendees will be able to sign up for our Spring Break Trip and Appa-lachia Service Project (ASP). This will be a great night of fun and laughter, but will also provide an opportunity to pay a deposit to reserve your spot on our upcoming trips!

Upcoming Russia mission trip

Since 1991, Broadmoor UMC has supported First United Methodist Church of Ekaterinburg, Russia. This ministry continues today because of countless hours of service by numerous indi-viduals who have traveled to Russia or given generously to this mission. Plans for another visit are underway and set for the week of June 6-18, 2013. This mission trip will include construction and repairs on FUMC Ekaterinburg, hosting adult Bible studies and chil-dren’s outreach. Cost for the trip is $2,200 per person. For more information on how you can be a part of this global mission opportunity, contact James Gillespie at 470-6806 or [email protected].

Red Bag Sunday

This Sunday, January 6, is Red Bag Sunday! On the first Sun-day of each month those who have been collecting items for the Red Bag ministry, a partner-ship with the Noel Methodist Food Pantry, can drop off their filled Red Bags at the Welcome Center.

Per Susan Foster at the Noel Methodist Food Pantry, they currently have needs for the following items: toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving cream, plas-tic razors, dish detergent, dutch cleanser/Comet, and gently used towels, sheets, linens for rebuilding households. Food items are always welcome. They are so grateful for all of our donations.

Many years ago, one of our children had this odd habit. A few days after Christmas, as we rode around town, if he saw homes with Christmas lights, we would hear him yell from the back-seat, “Christmas is over!” For some reason, it seems he was ready to be done with the holidays.

In the Church, we aren’t quite done with Christmas. The “twelve days of Christ-mas” conclude with Epiphany on January 6. The Feast of Epiphany traditionally has been a time to remember the visit of the Wise Men to honor the Christ child.

The wise men’s part in the story of Jesus is instructive, I think. They remind us that Jesus came not only for the Jews, but for all people, since these visitors “from the East” were probably from Persia (Iran), Babylon (Iraq), or Ara-bia (Saudi Arabia). The gift of Jesus shatters the boundaries

of who is ‘in’ and who is ‘out’. “For God so loved the world,” John says.

The wise men also remind us that Jesus threat-ens all the estab-

lished orders. Herod felt the threat deeply, when he got word that another king had been born. This new king, Je-sus, calls into question all the other allegiances in our lives. Who or what will rule our lives? In his poem “Journey of the Magi”, T. S. Eliot has the wise men recognize that they “returned to our places, these Kingdoms, /But no longer at ease here.”

We are just about done with Christmas, but perhaps Christmas is not done with us. Not until we are ready to say just exactly who or what it is that receives our highest allegiance.

See you Sunday,

Perhaps Christmas is not done with us

FROM OUR

PASTOR Rev. Ken Irby
