Update on 2005-06 collection

Hurricane Schools

• Guidelines for reporting students displaced due to hurricanes were posted at http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/web2000/katrina.asp

• NCES senior fellow is working with affected institutions

New HR format

• Respondents generally favorable about new format that combined EAP, SA, S into one component

• Easier to ensure consistency across sections, but….– Did experience a couple of

editing glitches

• Combination of an old server and the new, combined HR format had negative impact on system performance in winter

• NCES replaced collection server toward end of collection period

• Collection was extended

Finance in winter

• Almost a third of total Finance surveys were completed during Winter collection

Spring collection

• Email sent to KHs 10 days before institution close– Suggested folks not wait until

last few days to enter data– Due to high volume and ED

Influences on the Future

Current status

• Current HEA extended through June 30, 2006

• Some parts of HEA Reauthorization were added to Reconciliation bill that was signed into law by President in early February – these parts didn’t affect IPEDS

• House bill: HR 609 – passed March 30• Senate bill: S1614 – rumored will be put

on Senate calendar “soon”• Then, House and Senate versions get

reconciled

• HR609 – Will have big impact on IPEDS– Focuses on consumer information

and public accountability– Prohibits student unit record

system

Consumer information

1) Provide consumers with an easy-to-use, comprehensive web-based tool for researching and comparing institutions of higher education• COOL at collegesearch.nces.ed.gov

2) Increase the transparency of college cost, price, and financial aid

3) Raise public awareness about postsec education, particularly among low-income families, non-traditional students, and first-generation college students

• New version will be released this spring

• Enhancements based on work done by NCES senior fellow – Focus groups with students,

parents, counselors

• Will include comparison tool, graphs, enhanced search

New Peer Tool Interface

• TRP held in Nov 2005• Participants tried out the new

interface and loved it– Variable search– Easily choose multiple years of
