ISTANBUL — Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has arrived in Turkey to visit Syrian refugees in her role as special envoy for the U.N. refugee agency.

Turkey’s Anadolu news agency says Jolie and UNHCR chief Anto-nio Guterres are expected to visit refugee camps along the border between Turkey and Syria on Thursday. Reports say Jolie will later travel to Ankara, the Turkish capital, for talks with officials who are handling the humanitarian crisis.

Turkey hosts about 80,000 Syrians who have fled the 18-month conflict in their country. Earlier this week, Jolie and Guterres visited Syrian refu-gees in Jordan, which is also sheltering those who have fled the civil war in neighboring Syria.

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc’s new iPhone goes on sale on Friday with a bigger screen and 4G wireless technology, as the company seeks to safe-guard its edge over rivals like Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Google Inc.

The iPhone 5 fulfilled many of the expectations laid out by gadget geeks and technology analysts ahead of its Wednesday unveiling but offered few surprises to give Apple shares -- already near record highs -- another major kick.

“There is not a wow factor because everything you saw today is evolu-tionary. I do think they did enough to satisfy,” said Michael Yoshikami, chief executive of wealth management

company Destination Wealth Management.

Other industry analysts speculated about what else was in Apple’s product pipe-line ahead of the crucial year-end holiday season, especially since the company stayed

mum about an oft-rumored TV device or a smaller iPad.

The consumer electronics giant that in 2010 popularized tablet computing with the iPad has given no hints on whether it plans a smaller version to match cheaper tablets from the likes of Google or Amazon.com Inc.

“We would really like to see the iPad Mini in the product offering for the all-important holiday quarter. They still have time,” said Channing Smith, co-manager of the Capital Advisors Growth Fund. “As soon as we see that,

we will have more conviction about the stock heading into the final quarter.”

Apple shares ended the day up 1.4 percent at $669.79.

The latest iPhone comes as Apple faces competition beyond current key competitors Samsung and Google. Late entrant Microsoft Corp is now trying to push its Windows Phone 8 operating system as an alternative to Apple and Android, the most-used smartphone operating system in the world.

Analysts have forecast sales of 10 million to 12 million of the new iP-hones in this month alone.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook kicked off the event in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center but it was market-ing chief Phil Schiller who introduced the iPhone 5 and took the audience through the new phone’s features.

Similar opinion was also expressed by Branch Manager of QNB Kesawan Denpasar, I Ketut Sirta. So far, the economic and banking condition in Bali remained very positive. European crisis was predicted to affect the economy and banking sector of Bali.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

As observation of Bali Post to loca-tion on Wednesday (Sep12), condition of the dam water was quite alarming. Indicator of the water discharge showed the point far below 200 cm. More dis-turbingly, a number of dam surfaces began cracking due to the drought. The stones sinking all this time had been vis-ible. The condition indicated the sharp subsidence of the dam water. Due to the drought, some tourist boats and rescue speed boats also ran aground on the edge of the dam.

Headman of Timpag, Gusti Sukawa-hana, said the decline in the dam water discharge had been going on since a few weeks. However, the decrease could not be ensured. “It happened due to the fac-tor of nature. Since it never rained, the dam water surely receded,” he said on Wednesday. Receding of the dam water was a normal phenomenon during the dry season.

The drought engulfing the dam was most complained by farmers. Deputy Secretary of the Association of Indone-sian Farmers (HKTI) of Tabanan, Gusti Subagia, claimed to receive a lot of com-plaints from farmers related to the water

crisis. “Two weeks ago, I checked the water condition at the Telaga Tunjung dam. It was indeed alarming,” he said via telephone. According to this farmer figure from Kerambitan, the water at Telaga Tunjung dam was no longer like a dam, but like ordinary river water because the height of water continued to decline sharply. This condition was estimated to have been going on since 1.5 months ago.

He explained the dam initiated in the era of President Megawati was meant to irrigate the paddy field in the area of Subak Tangguntiti and around Megati village. In the whole, the area was estimated to reach 1,000 hectares. Due to the drought, farmers were forced to stop their rice cultivation because the water supply totally stopped. “After the dam was constructed, the water supply frequently trickles, let alone the dam water continues to dry up,” he com-plained again. Representing the farmers, he hoped it would rain immediately. Therefore, the water supply to rice field could run normally and begin the plant-ing activities.

Other than being complained by

farmers, the receding water at Telaga Tunjung dam was also complained by anglers like Ketut Sukadana, 45, from Tengkudak, Penebel. As the water reced-ed, their fish catches declined as well. “I’ve been fishing from the morning, but I can only get 10 fish,” he complained. Typically, only within a few hours, he was able to catch up to two kilograms. Due to declining catches, the number of anglers diminished, too.

The man doubling as a farmer esti-mated the receding dam water reached more than three meters. Such estima-tion was based on water traces on the stone surface. Now, the distance of water traces to the dam surface was about four meters. “The dam water has continued to decline within the past few weeks,” he said. According to Su-kadana, he could angle to the dam for up to three times.

Similar opinion was disclosed by another angler, Ketut Pegeh, 50, from Jegu, Penebel. Though having angled for hours, his catch was only a few. By and large, the fish caught were like Javanese carp and other freshwater fish. (kmb30)

When the woman pulled the painting out of a garbage bag she carried it in, Craner was nearly certain the painting was a Renoir with its distinct colors, light and brushwork. A plaque on the front labeled it “Renoir.” “My gut said that it was right, but you have to then check,” Craner said.

French handwriting on the back of the canvass included a label and number. Craner turned to the cata-log by French gallery Bernheim-Je-une that’s published all of Renoir’s work. “Low and behold, it was in volume one,” she said.

An image of the painting was published in black and white, and the gallery’s stock number

matched the flea market find. So Craner made a digital image of the flea market painting, con-verted it to black and white for a closer look, and the brush strokes also matched, she said.

“It’s not a painting you would fake,” Craner said. “If you’re going to fake something, you’d fake something easier.”

Painting No. 24349 turns out to be Renoir’s painting “Paysage Bords de Seine,” which translates to Banks of the River Seine, Cra-ner determined. It dates to about 1879 and measures 6 inches by 10 inches. The painting is set for auction Sept. 29. It could fetch $75,000 or more, Craner said.

kets at a West Virginia flea market two years ago apparently acquired an original painting by French impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir without knowing it. The woman considered discarding the painting to salvage its frame, but instead made an appointment to have it evaluated in July by the Potomack Co. auction house in Alexandria, Va., said its fine arts director Anne Norton Craner.

Mars rover Curiosity wrapping up health checkups

Virtually all customary villages in Bali have gamelan troupe. This troupe plays important role in expressing their entertainment arts and accompanying every ritual activity. This existence gives op-portunity to villagers from child to adult to express their artistic talent especially in dance, drama and gamelan arts. Young girls under twelve or elementary school age have a chance to participate in performing Rejang Dance. By wearing white and yellow costumes and floral decoration on head, they dance beautifully accompanied by gamelan music. Rejang Dance is one of the sacred dances performed in relation to the organization of temple anniversary or odalan. Other than putting a ba-sic love to their tradition, they also show devotional service or ngatur ayah through the arts.

When they grow older, right on entering secondary school, they join customary village youth club or Sekaa Taruna. Here, with their male friends and their broth-ers and sisters start to learn about organization. Many things can be learned through this organization. Since it has affiliation to customary village, they can learn about the making of some simple oblation under guidance of senior oblation maker and various traditional arts. In Bali, this youth club actually play important role in preparing young generation to maintain their valuable cultural heritages or to

prepare themselves for inheriting customary responsibility.

With their male counterpart, here the young girls also learn to play drama or more complex traditional arts. Popular genres of performance showed are pure entertainment and the one in com-bination with sacred dance. The latter usually features Calonarang. This magical drama involves a combination of male and female players. In essence, this Calonar-ang drama highlights the endless fight between truth and untruth symbolizing by sanctified effi-gies or tapakan like Rangda and Barong. By and large, it is also associated with ritual events at local temple.

In the following stage, when woman gets married she will en-ter the new organization, namely customary village. Having learned much about ritual works, it is now the time to practice them in wider social life. They should attend some socio-religious ac-tivities when the events engage the members of customary vil-lage. At this stage, household mother can remain to show her devotional service through the arts other than social works. Through the arts, they may join the drama or individual psalmodic singing or pasantian.

How is about their private life? It is normal as others. They also have opportunity to build career in their profession. In modern life with heterogeneous professions as today, woman also works as men do. Traditions do not impede them to reach outstanding achievement in self-employee or office job. If they work at daytime, some social works will be held at the evening.

Tradition is not something ob-solete. Even, it retains abundant inspirations to create something new and creative that is advanta-geous for modern life. However, traditions should also be reviewed and adjust to the current condi-tion without leaving behind its core. Tradition does not hinder women to get their career achieve-ment. The Dean of Faculty of Tour-ism, Udayana University, I Putu Anom, judged the weak en-forcement of bylaw No. 5/2008 regarding the tour guide against the perpetrators had made it more powerless. Rampant existence of illegal tourist guides harmed the image of Bali tourism because they tended to provide inferior services.

“Weak law enforcement has caused the proliferation of unli-censed tour guides. Even, their amount reaches 50 percent of the legal ones,” said Putu Anom in Denpasar.

He said the existence of unli-censed tourist guides in Bali clearly went up against the rules. On that account, the Government Tourism Office in the province, regency and municipality should assign a team to discipline those illegal tourist guides operating in Bali.

“The team of Bali Government Tourism Office should take deci-sive action against those illegal tourist guides. Legal sanction imposed to them should not only be a fine but whenever possible they should also be sentenced

with imprisonment. It is reason-able to be imposed in the effort to result in a deterrent effect,” he said.

He mentioned those tourist guides had to know properly about the tourism potential of Bali including the nature, culture, religion and character of Balinese people. Such cultural understand-ing was the basic for a tourist guide to explain correctly about Balinese culture to tourists.

“If surveyed, in general tourist will surely want a tourist guide who know, understand and ap-preciate the culture of Bali. By all means, tourists also want a tourist guide who really implements the Balinese culture,” he said.

According to him, to ensure the quality of tourist guides in the future, it was necessary to hold a rigorous recruitment pro-cess. Selection of tourist guide candidates had to be coordi-nated with the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association (HPI). For hotel establishment, it should be coordinated with the Indonesia Hotels and Restaurants Associa-tion (PHRI), and permit of travel

agency should be coordinated with the Association of the In-donesia Tour and Travel Agency (ASITA).

“Inevitably, the perpetrators who practice the culture and re-ligion in person will have a better understanding on their culture than tourist guides that can only memorize the Balinese culture,” he said.

The travel agency entrepreneurs in Bali handling the Mandarin market were suspected to employ those recruited tourist guides.

with police near the U.S. Embassy in the capital Cairo for the third day in a row. The violence has raised worries that further protests could break out around the Muslim world as anger spreads over the movie.

Yemeni security forces who rushed to the scene fired in the air and used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators and were eventually able to drive them out of the compound. It was not immedi-ately clear whether anyone was inside the embassy at the time of the attack.

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s new president survived an assassination attempt on his second day in office when two suicide bombers blew themselves up Wednesday while trying to gain access into a heavily guarded hotel that is his tem-porary residence, officials and witnesses said.

The attack highlights the challenge that insecurity caused by an Islamist insurgency poses to Somalia’s fledgling govern-ment, which is expected to help transform the east African country from being a failed state to one with functioning government.

The two suicide bombers set off explosions after they were shot by soldiers guarding the Jazeera Hotel, while another was intercepted and shot dead as he attempted to scale the walls of the hotel’s compound, the Afri-can Union Mission for Somalia, known as Amisom, said in a statement.

The president who was elected by Parliament on Monday, was undeterred by the explosions and continued to speak to the media, AMISOM said.

Furthermore, Dharmaja said that all this time the production of rice field in Buleleng spreading across eight subdis-tricts was unable to meet the needs of community. This occurred due to many factors, where one of which was caused by population growth leading to the increasing demand for rice. Besides, it was also triggered by rice field conver-

sion to plantation or residential areas. As a result, paddy field was getting narrower that emptied out to decline in rice production. Farmers in the eight subdistricts had annual production reaching averagely 5.9 tons. Of this amount, Buleleng still lacked of nine tons of rice production. “Indeed, our lo-cal rice production has not been able to meet the need of community. However, this shortcoming does not lead to food crisis like in other regions because our community can easily purchase rice from other regions,” he said.

On the other hand, Dharmaja said that his agency would boost the grain produc-tion of farmers in the eight subdistricts in the future. One of the efforts to boost the local grain production was to change the cropping pattern from traditional system to modern system known as the Legowo Dua Satu system.

The cropping system began to be implemented in eight subdistricts with the assistance from field extension workers (PPL). He admitted that Le-gowo Dua Satu cropping system had been proved to boost the grain produc-tion of farmers. Dharmaja exemplified that traditional cropping system could produce 5.8 tons per hectare of land. After implementing the Legowo Dua Satu cropping system, the production jumped to some 9.4 tons.

Aside from increasing the grain production per hectare of land, with the Legowo Dua Satu cropping system, the plant cultivation would be easier than with traditional one. “It has been clearly proved so that we will continue to disseminate it. Hopefully, farmers can apply it and we will continue to provide the assistance through PPL with the field school program,” he explained. (kmb)

KARLSRUHE — Germany’s highest court paved the way Wednesday for the creation of Europe’s €500 billion ($640 billion) rescue fund for indebted govern-ments after it rejected calls to block it.

The Federal Constitutional Court’s decision allows President Joachim Gauck to sign off on the German parliament’s ratification of the treaty that sets up the European Stability Mechanism bailout fund — a finan-cial weapon that that leaders of the 17 countries that use the euro hope will help calm the debt crisis that threatens the eurozone and the global economy.

The decision means the eurozone governments finally have two robust financial defenses against the debt crisis in place. The bailout fund will takes its place alongside plans by the European Central Bank to buy unlimited amounts of short-term government bonds issued by troubled countries.

The ESM can support countries by loaning them money, while the ECB bond purchases could lower the painfully high borrowing costs that are threaten-ing Italy and Spain. Additionally, the ESM is also expected to join in purchasing bonds to support the ECB effort.

Stocks across Europe rallied strongly on the ruling, the euro spiked to a four-month high of $1.2906 and the borrowing rates of troubled economies, such as Spain and Italy, eased further.

European officials said the fund now expects to hold its first directors’ meeting next month.

Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed the court’s decision. “Today, Germany is once again sending a strong signal to Europe and beyond: Germany is as-suming with determination its responsibility as the biggest economy and as a reliable partner in Europe,” she told Parliament in Berlin hours after the ruling.

“This is a good day for Germany and it is a good day for Europe,” she said.

The ESM wouldn’t have been able to start work without Germany, its No. 1 contributor.

The court did, however, insist that Germany has to secure legal guarantees that Parliament must vote on any further increases in its contributions to the ESM. These guarantees must be secured before Gauck signs the fund into law — though that did not appear likely to be a major issue.

Opponents — including several politicians and a pressure group that claimed 37,000 people had signed up to its complaint — had challenged Germany’s rati-fication of the ESM, arguing it violated the country’s constitution. They had sought an injunction prevent-ing Gauck from signing the legislation — and also sought unsuccessfully to block the so-called fiscal compact, the budget-discipline pact pushed by Merkel and signed by most European Union countries.

Gauck’s office said in a statement that he plans to make a decision on signing the legislation into law “as soon as possible” but it isn’t yet possible to specify a date.

The court’s decision came just days after the Eu-ropean Central Bank unveiled a plan to buy govern-ment bonds of struggling countries if they apply to the eurozone’s bailout funds.

The Fed concludes a two-day policy meeting Thursday, and hopes have been high that it will choose bold action to jumpstart the world’s No. 1 economy and reduce high unemployment.

“There is risk of disappointment in case the Fed surprises by not easing policy as much as the market expects,” said Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Mel-bourne, Australia.

European stocks fell in early trading. Britain’s FTSE 100 lost 0.1 percent to 5,775.26. Germany’s DAX shed 0.3 percent to 7,323.32 and France’s CAC-40 was 0.5 percent down at 3,526.50.

Wall Street appeared set for a lower open, with Dow Jones industrial futures slipping 0.2 percent to 13,338. S&P 500

futures also were down, by 0.2 percent to 1,436.30. Asian stock markets turned in a mixed performance.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index closed up 0.4 percent at 8,995.15 after earlier sur-passing 9,000 for the first time since Aug. 30. South Korea’s Kospi rose marginally to 1,950.69. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost 0.1 percent to 20,047.63. Austra-lia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.5 percent to 4,339.40.

Mainland Chinese shares also fell. The Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.8 percent to 2,110.38. The Shenzhen Com-posite Index lost 1.4 percent to 888.49.

Tom Kaan, head of equity sales at Louis Capital Markets in Hong Kong, said that while Bernanke strongly hinted

last month that action would be taken, the real question was how big any steps might be.

“I think he doesn’t have much choice,” Kaan said. “The extent is what the mar-kets are looking for. The size of it.”

The biggest step would be a third round of bond purchases. In two previous bond-buying programs, the Fed bought more than $2 trillion of Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities after the 2008 financial crisis.

Many analysts feel there is reason for optimism about the global economic outlook. The European Central Bank and the government of China are among au-thorities that have all announced steps to handle various economic crises or boost sluggish growth.

“The fact remains there is a lot of liquidity out there at low interest rates,” Kaan said. “There is risk appetite. That is what is going to carry the equity markets through.”

BANGKOK — World stock markets went into reverse Thursday as investors fretted that expectations for the Federal Reserve to announce new measures to boost the U.S. economy might not be met.

On the one had, it’s a great success but on the other hand it still leaves a problem on the decline of environmental and human health quality.

Green revolution occurred between 1943 and 1970s through the implementation of chemical fertilizer and good irrigation system has conjured up the rice production. In short term, it became an ef-ficacious medicine to resolve the famine in tropical countries. Few decades later, it had an impact on the reduction of environmental quality, like pollution in water, land and others. Apart from the impact on the environment, it was also had an impact on human health like the rise of some new cancers.

Realizing these facts, now Bali has an initiative to become a green province and implement the integrated farming system. Hopefully, implementation of the system could realize the Bali Organic plan and consequently minimize the environmental destruction. Green province campaign includes some aspects, namely green culture, green economy and Bali green and clean. Green culture is intended to change the societal behavior in managing their waste management and environment. Green economy hints that all economic activities should be in the eco-friendly orientation. These two aspects will empty out into the initiative of Bali Organic.

One of the aspects is applied in the agricultural field. Social-ization has been intensified while establishing farmer groups. Through breeding local cows, for instance, farmers are expected to get maximal benefits. Other than increasing the number of cows, they will be able to take advantage the cow dung and urine for organic fertilizers. In the long run, it will reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Of course, this endeavor will reduce the production cost that should be spent by farmers and at the same time increase the quality of rice as well as improve the environmental quality.

As a matter of fact, simple practice of this concept could have been seen around 1970s. Farmers using cows to cultivate their land could also take advantage of their cow dung. It was spread out onto the rice field and its efficacy could last for at least for two planting seasons. In terraced rice field, it could uniquely be managed by establishing a cowshed in the upper stream. Later on, the collected dry cow dung was channeled to rice field through the water gutter.

However, since being urged by the demand to multiple the rice production, farmers left the method. Introduction of hand trac-tor and chemical fertilizers gradually replaced the role of cows. The new method was expected to accelerate the land cultivation process. As consequence, cows were only serving as ‘family saving’ for farmers.

Simple eco-friendly pest control actually has been proposed in the palm-leaf manuscript entitled “Shri Tattwa or Darmaning Pemaculan.” It has been applied by subak community in Bali from generation to generation until today. However, it seems to put more emphasis on the ritual aspect only, while herbal pesticide or other means of the oblation is only applied symbolically. For instance, bird raids are managed by offering two pieces of ketupat sidayu together with oblation and side dish of yellow dragonfly.

Meanwhile, Subash Palekar from India claimed to have de-veloped the vedic-based farming. He has initiated his ‘spiritual farming’ since 1988. In essence he said that God or nature has provided human with everything required to grow plants. So implementing the chemical fertilizers and pesticide means to op-pose God and will result in bad impact to human. Cow dung and urine as well as compost are three beneficial ingredients being enough for farming both on irrigated and non-irrigated land. By doing so, he claims it is a ‘zero budget of natural farming’ as in his trilogy book entitled Philosophy of Spiritual Farming.

To sum up, all movements at least refer to the same keywords namely green, natural and eco-friendly concept. They denote milestone of new awareness on modern human to re-orientate their food production in quality. This awareness has triggered the orientation in the quality of life and environment. Hopefully, the aspiration of Bali as Green Province and other green concepts could be realized supported by entire community based on their awareness of a better quality life! (BTN/punia)

“LPG imports have been grow-ing rapidly and will continue to do so in the future. Therefore, more investment is needed to increase the production capacity of the domestic industry,” he said dur-ing his speech at the 25th World LPG Forum at Nusa Dua, Bali, on Wednesday.

Boediono noted that domestic LPG consumption had been rising rapidly after the government`s success in implementation of the kerosene-to-gas conversion programme launched in 2007.

The government will also develop the necessary infrastructure to ensure there is adequate LPG supply, he

at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Evita Legowo said LPG im-ports could be reduced by increasing domestic LPG production from fuel oil refineries and natural gas and by replacing LPG with dimethyl ether.

LPG is a side product of fuel oil refineries, she noted.

“The more fuel oil refineries we have, the more LPG production there will be,” Evita added.

The government has planned to build three fuel oil refineries, which are expected to be operational by 2018-19.

Additionally, the government is

also developing regulations on speci-fications for production of dimethyl ether, Evita said.

Meanwhile, Karen Agustiawan, the president director of state oil and gas company Pertamina, expressed hope that the government would make it mandatory for all gas produc-ers to produce LPG.

At present, C3 and C4 which are raw materials for the production of LPG, are not separated from locally produced natural gas, she pointed out.

“Looking ahead, we need to make it compulsory for them to do so,” Karen said.

Pertamina itself had separated C3 and C4 from natural gas to produce LPG, she noted.

National LPG consumption cur-rently stands at 5 million tonnes per year, with 2.2 million tonnes coming from domestic production and 2.8 million tonnes being imported.

A team from the University of Leicester said Wednesday the bones were beneath the site of the Grey Friars church in Leicester, central England, where contemporary accounts say Richard was buried following his death in the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485.

Richard Buckley, co-director of the university’s Archaeological Ser-vices, said the bones are a “prime candidate” to be Richard’s. The remains are now being examined and the team hopes that DNA can be recovered to aid identification.

“We are not saying today that we have found King Richard III,” Richard Taylor, the university’s director of corporate affairs, told a news conference. “(But) this skeleton certainly has characteris-tics that warrant extensive, further detailed examination.”

William Shakespeare, writing more than a century after Rich-ard’s death, described the king as “deform’d, unfinished,” a mon-ster with a deformed conscience who murdered his nephews in the Tower of London in order to gain

the throne.The murder charge is a matter of

historical dispute. The official royal website says the young princes “disappeared” while under Rich-ard’s protection.

Taylor said the skeleton dis-played spinal abnormalities consis-tent with contemporary accounts of Richard’s appearance.

“We believe that the individual would have had severe scoliosis, which is a form of spinal curvature. This would have made his right shoul-der appear visibly higher than his left shoulder,” Taylor said.

He said the skeleton was appar-ently of an adult male and in good condition. There were signs of trauma to the skull shortly before death, perhaps from a bladed instrument, and a barbed metal arrowhead was found between vertebrae of the up-per back.

Professor Lin Foxhall, head of the university’s School of Archaeol-ogy and Ancient History, agreed that the skeleton is consistent with some contemporary accounts of Richard but “does not fit the exaggerated pic-

ture painted by later, Tudor sources which portrayed him as a wicked hunchback.”

“The individual we have discov-ered was plainly strong and active despite his disability, indeed it seems likely that he died in battle,” Foxhall said.

Richard, the last English king to die in battle, was buried “without any pompe or solemne funeral” by the Franciscan monks of Grey Friars.

There is a record that King Henry VII, the victor at Bosworth Field, commissioned a memorial for Rich-ard’s grave — in the choir, or eastern portion of the Grey Friars church — about 1495.

Although the records pointed to a grave in Leicester, 100 miles (160 ki-lometers) north of London, the church was suppressed in 1538 after King Henry VIII abolished the monasteries and its location was long forgotten.

Christopher Wren, the architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, visited the area in 1612 and saw a stone pillar erected in a garden on the site which was inscribed “Here lies the body of Richard III.”

BEIJING - China has issued the first comments attributed to president-in-waiting Xi Jinping since his disappearance from the public eye over 10 days ago ignited rumors over his health, but there was no public sighting or new photograph of him.

Beijing has still not issued a statement directly responding to the rumors over the 59-year-old’s health, which have included a bad back, heart trouble, a stroke and a car-crash injury.

China experts doubt Xi is suffering more than a minor ailment - a version supported by sources close to the leadership - but Beijing’s refusal to clarify the situation has begun to emerge as a talking point in global financial markets.

“Xi Jinping has been a big worry for people. He’s been out of the public eye for about a week now ...,” Frances Cheung, head of China and Hong Kong strategy with investment group CLSA, said on the sidelines of a conference in Hong Kong.

Another chief strategist, with a U.S. securities firm in Tokyo, added that Beijing’s silence - though in keeping with a Chinese tradition of not discussing the health of senior leaders - could indicate some discord behind the scenes.

JAKARTA — Indonesian men rank as the world’s top smok-ers, with two out of three of them lighting up in a country where cigarettes cost pennies and tobacco advertising is everywhere.

A survey released Tuesday found that 67 percent of all males over 15 years old smoke. The sprawling archipelago ranked second only to Russia overall with a rate of 35 percent compared to 39 percent, respectively.

“We have failed in protecting our people,” said Health Min-ister Nafsiah Mboi, commenting on the rate of male smokers jumping from 53 percent since 1995. “We have been defeated by the tobacco industry ... we don’t want this, we cannot accept this because our job is to protect people from cigarettes.”

More than 8,000 people participated in the study last year, which is part of a global series of surveys taken in 15 countries with heavy tobacco use and supported by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention. It also found a high rate of Indonesians were subjected to second-hand smoke at work, home and in public places.

Mboi said she was particularly alarmed to learn that nearly 80 percent of Indonesians are exposed to smoke at home.

“How is the number of parents smoking at home with kids so high? It means that they are damaging their children’s lungs, whether intentionally or not,” she said. “As the health minister, I am ashamed to let this condition continue.”

Indonesia has long been criticized for its lack of tobacco controls. It is one of a remaining handful of countries that has failed to sign the WHO’s tobacco treaty. Giant billboards pro-mote cigarettes and commercials run on television and before movies in theaters. Local and multinational tobacco companies also routinely sponsor sporting events and concerts — advertis-ing that has long been banned in many countries.

Most Indonesian men crave kreteks, a pungent mixture of tobacco and cloves, but brands such as Marlboro, produced by U.S.-based Philip Morris International, have also gained in popularity. About 3 percent of women smoke in the country.

Health regulations passed in 2009 call for a number of tighter tobacco controls, including bans on advertising and smoking in public places, but they have yet to be implemented by the government.

“It’s just sitting there,” said Mark Hurley of the Washington-based Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, who attended the report’s launch in Jakarta. “I think if there was high-level ap-proval, the health regulations would have been passed a long time ago.”

Smoking-related illnesses kill at least 200,000 annually in Indonesia, which has a population of nearly 240 million. About a quarter of Indonesian boys aged 13 to 15 get hooked on ciga-rettes that sell for about $1 a pack or as little as a few cents per stick, according to WHO. The latest national survey, however, only assessed smoking among adults.

Indonesia’s tobacco industry employs millions in the world’s fifth-largest cigarette-producing market. About 6 percent of the government’s revenue comes from cigarette taxes, and a powerful tobacco lobby has blocked past regulation attempts, including a move to ban TV ads.

Indonesian cigarettes are cheap by regional standards, with taxes less than 40 percent. Tobacco farmers have held massive street protests to denounce any push for higher tariffs or tighter restrictions.

The series of tobacco surveys included Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Mexico, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay and Vietnam.

Hartati, a member of the party`s Advisory Board which is chaired by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was sent to KPK`s detention house after 9-hours questioning.

LONDON - Professor Sid Wat-kins, the Formula One doctor who tended to Ayrton Senna after his fatal crash at Imola in 1994 and who saved the lives of countless others through his work on safety, has died at the age of 84.

As word spread around Formula One of his death late on Wednesday, confirmed by a source close to the family, tributes poured in from driv-ers and all whose lives were touched by the wise-cracking neurosurgeon with a love of cigars and whisky.

They included Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, who suffered a huge crash on the same San Marino Grand Prix weekend that claimed the lives of Senna and Austrian Roland Ratzenberger.

“It was Sid Watkins that saved my life in Imola 94. great guy to be with, always happy...tks for ev-erything u have done for us drivers. RIP,” Barrichello said on Twitter to 1.7 million followers.

“RIP Prof. Sid Watkins. Sad news for us who stay behind,” said Senna’s nephew Bruno, who now races for the same Williams team that triple champion Ayrton was with when he crashed on a sunny afternoon in May 1, 1994.

SYDNEY - French Open winner Maria Sharapova will join U.S. Open champions Ser-ena Williams and Andy Murray in warming up for next year’s Australian Open at the Brisbane International, organisers said on Thursday.

LONDON - Professor Sid Wat-kins, the Formula One doctor who tended to Ayrton Senna after his fatal crash at Imola in 1994 and who saved the lives of countless others through his work on safety, has died at the age of 84.

As word spread around Formula One of his death late on Wednesday, confirmed by a source close to the family, tributes poured in from driv-ers and all whose lives were touched by the wise-cracking neurosurgeon with a love of cigars and whisky.

They included Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, who suffered a huge crash on the same San Marino Grand Prix weekend that claimed the lives of Senna and Austrian Roland Ratzenberger.

“It was Sid Watkins that saved my life in Imola 94. great guy to be with, always happy...tks for ev-erything u have done for us drivers. RIP,” Barrichello said on Twitter to 1.7 million followers.

“RIP Prof. Sid Watkins. Sad news for us who stay behind,” said Senna’s nephew Bruno, who now races for the same Williams team that triple champion Ayrton was with when he crashed on a sunny afternoon in May 1, 1994.

Senna remains the last driver fatal-ity in a Formula One race and much of the credit for the survival of others can be laid at the door of Watkins, known simply as ‘Prof’ by paddock regulars and ‘Sid’ by closer friends.

Northern Ireland’s Martin Don-nelly, Finland’s double champion Mika Hakkinen, Austrian Gerhard Berger and F1 team founder Frank Williams all owed much to his quick response and care after life-threatening accidents.

“Today the world of motor rac-ing lost one of it’s true greats,” said McLaren chairman and former team principal Ron Dennis, whose cars took Senna to all of his titles, in a statement.

“No he wasn’t a driver. No he wasn’t an engineer. No, he wasn’t a designer. He was a doctor and it’s probably fair to say that he did more than anyone, over many years, to make Formula One as safe as it is today.

“Many drivers and ex-drivers owe their lives to his careful and expert work, which resulted in the massive advances in safety levels that today’s drivers possibly take for granted.”

SYDNEY - French Open winner Maria Sharapova will join U.S. Open champions Ser-ena Williams and Andy Murray in warming up for next year’s Australian Open at the Brisbane International, organisers said on Thursday.

Williams and Murray started their seasons at the tournament this year but Russian Sharapova will be making her first appearance at the event, which takes place at the Queensland Tennis Centre from Dec. 31 to Jan. 6.

A team from the University of Leicester said Wednesday the bones were beneath the site of the Grey Friars church in Leicester, central England, where contemporary accounts say Richard was buried following his death in the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485.

Richard Buckley, co-director of the university’s Archaeological Ser-vices, said the bones are a “prime candidate” to be Richard’s. The remains are now being examined and the team hopes that DNA can be recovered to aid identification.

“We are not saying today that we have found King Richard III,” Richard Taylor, the university’s director of corporate affairs, told a news conference. “(But) this skeleton certainly has characteris-tics that warrant extensive, further detailed examination.”

William Shakespeare, writing more than a century after Rich-ard’s death, described the king as “deform’d, unfinished,” a mon-ster with a deformed conscience who murdered his nephews in the Tower of London in order to gain

the throne.The murder charge is a matter of

historical dispute. The official royal website says the young princes “disappeared” while under Rich-ard’s protection.

Taylor said the skeleton dis-played spinal abnormalities consis-tent with contemporary accounts of Richard’s appearance.

“We believe that the individual would have had severe scoliosis, which is a form of spinal curvature. This would have made his right shoul-der appear visibly higher than his left shoulder,” Taylor said.

He said the skeleton was appar-ently of an adult male and in good condition. There were signs of trauma to the skull shortly before death, perhaps from a bladed instrument, and a barbed metal arrowhead was found between vertebrae of the up-per back.

Professor Lin Foxhall, head of the university’s School of Archaeol-ogy and Ancient History, agreed that the skeleton is consistent with some contemporary accounts of Richard but “does not fit the exaggerated pic-

ture painted by later, Tudor sources which portrayed him as a wicked hunchback.”

“The individual we have discov-ered was plainly strong and active despite his disability, indeed it seems likely that he died in battle,” Foxhall said.

Richard, the last English king to die in battle, was buried “without any pompe or solemne funeral” by the Franciscan monks of Grey Friars.

There is a record that King Henry VII, the victor at Bosworth Field, commissioned a memorial for Rich-ard’s grave — in the choir, or eastern portion of the Grey Friars church — about 1495.

Although the records pointed to a grave in Leicester, 100 miles (160 ki-lometers) north of London, the church was suppressed in 1538 after King Henry VIII abolished the monasteries and its location was long forgotten.

Christopher Wren, the architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, visited the area in 1612 and saw a stone pillar erected in a garden on the site which was inscribed “Here lies the body of Richard III.”

BEIJING - China has issued the first comments attributed to president-in-waiting Xi Jinping since his disappearance from the public eye over 10 days ago ignited rumors over his health, but there was no public sighting or new photograph of him.

Xi, who has skipped meetings with visiting foreign leaders over the past week, was cited by state media late on Wednesday night as expressing condolences to the family of a veteran Communist Party official who died last week.

Beijing has still not issued a statement directly responding to the rumors over the 59-year-old’s health, which have included a bad back, heart trouble, a stroke and a car-crash injury.

China experts doubt Xi is suffering more than a minor ailment - a version supported by sources close to the leadership - but Beijing’s refusal to clarify the situation has begun to emerge as a talking point in global financial markets.

“Xi Jinping has been a big worry for people. He’s been out of the public eye for about a week now ...,” Frances Cheung, head of China and Hong Kong strategy with investment group CLSA, said on the sidelines of a conference in Hong Kong.

Another chief strategist, with a U.S. securities firm in Tokyo, added that Beijing’s silence - though in keeping with a Chinese tradition of not discussing the health of senior leaders - could indicate some discord behind the scenes.

“I assume this whole incident reflects some behind-the-scenes frictions in formulating policies under the new leadership,” the strategist said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic.

JAKARTA — Indonesian men rank as the world’s top smok-ers, with two out of three of them lighting up in a country where cigarettes cost pennies and tobacco advertising is everywhere.

A survey released Tuesday found that 67 percent of all males over 15 years old smoke. The sprawling archipelago ranked second only to Russia overall with a rate of 35 percent compared to 39 percent, respectively.

“We have failed in protecting our people,” said Health Min-ister Nafsiah Mboi, commenting on the rate of male smokers jumping from 53 percent since 1995. “We have been defeated by the tobacco industry ... we don’t want this, we cannot accept this because our job is to protect people from cigarettes.”

More than 8,000 people participated in the study last year, which is part of a global series of surveys taken in 15 countries with heavy tobacco use and supported by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Pre-vention. It also found a high rate of Indonesians were subjected to second-hand smoke at work, home and in public places.

Mboi said she was particularly alarmed to learn that nearly 80 percent of Indonesians are exposed to smoke at home.

“How is the number of parents smoking at home with kids so high? It means that they are damaging their children’s lungs, whether intentionally or not,” she said. “As the health minister, I am ashamed to let this condition continue.”

Indonesia has long been criticized for its lack of tobacco controls. It is one of a remaining handful of countries that has failed to sign the WHO’s tobacco treaty. Giant billboards pro-mote cigarettes and commercials run on television and before movies in theaters. Local and multinational tobacco companies also routinely sponsor sporting events and concerts — advertis-ing that has long been banned in many countries.

Most Indonesian men crave kreteks, a pungent mixture of tobacco and cloves, but brands such as Marlboro, produced by U.S.-based Philip Morris International, have also gained in popularity. About 3 percent of women smoke in the country.

Health regulations passed in 2009 call for a number of tighter tobacco controls, including bans on advertising and smoking in public places, but they have yet to be implemented by the government.

“It’s just sitting there,” said Mark Hurley of the Washington-based Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, who attended the report’s launch in Jakarta. “I think if there was high-level ap-proval, the health regulations would have been passed a long time ago.”

Smoking-related illnesses kill at least 200,000 annually in Indonesia, which has a population of nearly 240 million. About a quarter of Indonesian boys aged 13 to 15 get hooked on ciga-rettes that sell for about $1 a pack or as little as a few cents per stick, according to WHO. The latest national survey, however, only assessed smoking among adults.

Indonesia’s tobacco industry employs millions in the world’s fifth-largest cigarette-producing market. About 6 percent of the government’s revenue comes from cigarette taxes, and a powerful tobacco lobby has blocked past regulation attempts, including a move to ban TV ads.

Indonesian cigarettes are cheap by regional standards, with taxes less than 40 percent. Tobacco farmers have held massive street protests to denounce any push for higher tariffs or tighter restrictions.

The series of tobacco surveys included Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Mexico, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Uruguay and Vietnam.

Hartati, a member of the party`s Advisory Board which is chaired by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was sent to KPK`s detention house after 9-hours questioning.

KARLSRUHE — Germany’s highest court paved the way Wednesday for the creation of Europe’s €500 billion ($640 billion) rescue fund for indebted govern-ments after it rejected calls to block it.

The Federal Constitutional Court’s decision allows President Joachim Gauck to sign off on the German parliament’s ratification of the treaty that sets up the European Stability Mechanism bailout fund — a finan-cial weapon that that leaders of the 17 countries that use the euro hope will help calm the debt crisis that threatens the eurozone and the global economy.

The decision means the eurozone governments finally have two robust financial defenses against the debt crisis in place. The bailout fund will takes its place alongside plans by the European Central Bank to buy unlimited amounts of short-term government bonds issued by troubled countries.

The ESM can support countries by loaning them money, while the ECB bond purchases could lower the painfully high borrowing costs that are threaten-ing Italy and Spain. Additionally, the ESM is also expected to join in purchasing bonds to support the ECB effort.

Stocks across Europe rallied strongly on the ruling, the euro spiked to a four-month high of $1.2906 and the borrowing rates of troubled economies, such as Spain and Italy, eased further.

European officials said the fund now expects to hold its first directors’ meeting next month.

Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed the court’s decision. “Today, Germany is once again sending a strong signal to Europe and beyond: Germany is as-suming with determination its responsibility as the biggest economy and as a reliable partner in Europe,” she told Parliament in Berlin hours after the ruling.

“This is a good day for Germany and it is a good day for Europe,” she said.

The ESM wouldn’t have been able to start work without Germany, its No. 1 contributor.

The court did, however, insist that Germany has to secure legal guarantees that Parliament must vote on any further increases in its contributions to the ESM. These guarantees must be secured before Gauck signs the fund into law — though that did not appear likely to be a major issue.

Opponents — including several politicians and a pressure group that claimed 37,000 people had signed up to its complaint — had challenged Germany’s rati-fication of the ESM, arguing it violated the country’s constitution. They had sought an injunction prevent-ing Gauck from signing the legislation — and also sought unsuccessfully to block the so-called fiscal compact, the budget-discipline pact pushed by Merkel and signed by most European Union countries.

Gauck’s office said in a statement that he plans to make a decision on signing the legislation into law “as soon as possible” but it isn’t yet possible to specify a date.

The court’s decision came just days after the Eu-ropean Central Bank unveiled a plan to buy govern-ment bonds of struggling countries if they apply to the eurozone’s bailout funds.

The Fed concludes a two-day policy meeting Thursday, and hopes have been high that it will choose bold action to jumpstart the world’s No. 1 economy and reduce high unemployment.

“There is risk of disappointment in case the Fed surprises by not easing policy as much as the market expects,” said Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Mel-bourne, Australia.

European stocks fell in early trading. Britain’s FTSE 100 lost 0.1 percent to 5,775.26. Germany’s DAX shed 0.3 percent to 7,323.32 and France’s CAC-40 was 0.5 percent down at 3,526.50.

Wall Street appeared set for a lower open, with Dow Jones industrial futures slipping 0.2 percent to 13,338. S&P 500

futures also were down, by 0.2 percent to 1,436.30. Asian stock markets turned in a mixed performance.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index closed up 0.4 percent at 8,995.15 after earlier sur-passing 9,000 for the first time since Aug. 30. South Korea’s Kospi rose marginally to 1,950.69. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost 0.1 percent to 20,047.63. Austra-lia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.5 percent to 4,339.40.

Mainland Chinese shares also fell. The Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.8 percent to 2,110.38. The Shenzhen Com-posite Index lost 1.4 percent to 888.49.

Tom Kaan, head of equity sales at Louis Capital Markets in Hong Kong, said that while Bernanke strongly hinted

last month that action would be taken, the real question was how big any steps might be.

“I think he doesn’t have much choice,” Kaan said. “The extent is what the mar-kets are looking for. The size of it.”

The biggest step would be a third round of bond purchases. In two previous bond-buying programs, the Fed bought more than $2 trillion of Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities after the 2008 financial crisis.

Many analysts feel there is reason for optimism about the global economic outlook. The European Central Bank and the government of China are among au-thorities that have all announced steps to handle various economic crises or boost sluggish growth.

“The fact remains there is a lot of liquidity out there at low interest rates,” Kaan said. “There is risk appetite. That is what is going to carry the equity markets through.”

BANGKOK — World stock markets went into reverse Thursday as investors fretted that expectations for the Federal Reserve to announce new measures to boost the U.S. economy might not be met.

On the one had, it’s a great success but on the other hand it still leaves a problem on the decline of environmental and human health quality.

Green revolution occurred between 1943 and 1970s through the implementation of chemical fertilizer and good irrigation system has conjured up the rice production. In short term, it became an ef-ficacious medicine to resolve the famine in tropical countries. Few decades later, it had an impact on the reduction of environmental quality, like pollution in water, land and others. Apart from the impact on the environment, it was also had an impact on human health like the rise of some new cancers.

Realizing these facts, now Bali has an initiative to become a green province and implement the integrated farming system. Hopefully, implementation of the system could realize the Bali Organic plan and consequently minimize the environmental destruction. Green province campaign includes some aspects, namely green culture, green economy and Bali green and clean. Green culture is intended to change the societal behavior in managing their waste management and environment. Green economy hints that all economic activities should be in the eco-friendly orientation. These two aspects will empty out into the initiative of Bali Organic.

One of the aspects is applied in the agricultural field. Social-ization has been intensified while establishing farmer groups. Through breeding local cows, for instance, farmers are expected to get maximal benefits. Other than increasing the number of cows, they will be able to take advantage the cow dung and urine for organic fertilizers. In the long run, it will reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Of course, this endeavor will reduce the production cost that should be spent by farmers and at the same time increase the quality of rice as well as improve the environmental quality.

As a matter of fact, simple practice of this concept could have been seen around 1970s. Farmers using cows to cultivate their land could also take advantage of their cow dung. It was spread out onto the rice field and its efficacy could last for at least for two planting seasons. In terraced rice field, it could uniquely be managed by establishing a cowshed in the upper stream. Later on, the collected dry cow dung was channeled to rice field through the water gutter.

However, since being urged by the demand to multiple the rice production, farmers left the method. Introduction of hand trac-tor and chemical fertilizers gradually replaced the role of cows. The new method was expected to accelerate the land cultivation process. As consequence, cows were only serving as ‘family saving’ for farmers.

Simple eco-friendly pest control actually has been proposed in the palm-leaf manuscript entitled “Shri Tattwa or Darmaning Pemaculan.” It has been applied by subak community in Bali from generation to generation until today. However, it seems to put more emphasis on the ritual aspect only, while herbal pesticide or other means of the oblation is only applied symbolically. For instance, bird raids are managed by offering two pieces of ketupat sidayu together with oblation and side dish of yellow dragonfly.

Meanwhile, Subash Palekar from India claimed to have de-veloped the vedic-based farming. He has initiated his ‘spiritual farming’ since 1988. In essence he said that God or nature has provided human with everything required to grow plants. So implementing the chemical fertilizers and pesticide means to op-pose God and will result in bad impact to human. Cow dung and urine as well as compost are three beneficial ingredients being enough for farming both on irrigated and non-irrigated land. By doing so, he claims it is a ‘zero budget of natural farming’ as in his trilogy book entitled Philosophy of Spiritual Farming.

To sum up, all movements at least refer to the same keywords namely green, natural and eco-friendly concept. They denote milestone of new awareness on modern human to re-orientate their food production in quality. This awareness has triggered the orientation in the quality of life and environment. Hopefully, the aspiration of Bali as Green Province and other green concepts could be realized supported by entire community based on their awareness of a better quality life! (BTN/punia)

“LPG imports have been grow-ing rapidly and will continue to do so in the future. Therefore, more investment is needed to increase the production capacity of the domestic industry,” he said dur-ing his speech at the 25th World LPG Forum at Nusa Dua, Bali, on Wednesday.

Boediono noted that domestic LPG consumption had been rising rapidly after the government`s success in implementation of the kerosene-to-gas conversion programme launched in 2007.

The government will also develop the necessary infrastructure to ensure there is adequate LPG supply, he

at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Evita Legowo said LPG im-ports could be reduced by increasing domestic LPG production from fuel oil refineries and natural gas and by replacing LPG with dimethyl ether.

LPG is a side product of fuel oil refineries, she noted.

“The more fuel oil refineries we have, the more LPG production there will be,” Evita added.

The government has planned to build three fuel oil refineries, which are expected to be operational by 2018-19.

Additionally, the government is

also developing regulations on speci-fications for production of dimethyl ether, Evita said.

Meanwhile, Karen Agustiawan, the president director of state oil and gas company Pertamina, expressed hope that the government would make it mandatory for all gas produc-ers to produce LPG.

At present, C3 and C4 which are raw materials for the production of LPG, are not separated from locally produced natural gas, she pointed out.

“Looking ahead, we need to make it compulsory for them to do so,” Karen said.

Pertamina itself had separated C3 and C4 from natural gas to produce LPG, she noted.

National LPG consumption cur-rently stands at 5 million tonnes per year, with 2.2 million tonnes coming from domestic production and 2.8 million tonnes being imported.

Before storming the grounds, demonstrators removed the em-

bassy’s sign on the outer wall, set tires ablaze and pelted the compound with rocks.

It was similar to an attack on the U.S. Embassy in the Egyptian capital of Cairo on Tuesday night. A mob of Libyans also attacked the U.S. con-sulate in the eastern city of Benghazi on Tuesday, killing American Ambas-sador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

In Egypt, protesters were clashing

with police near the U.S. Embassy in the capital Cairo for the third day in a row. The violence has raised worries that further protests could break out around the Muslim world as anger spreads over the movie.

Yemeni security forces who rushed to the scene fired in the air and used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators and were eventually able to drive them out of the compound. It was not immedi-ately clear whether anyone was inside the embassy at the time of the attack.

The Yemeni Embassy in Wash-ington condemned the attack and vowed to ensure the safety of foreign diplomats and to step up security measures around their missions in the country.

AMSTERDAM - Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s Liberals won a closely con-tested election, but he faced the prospect of having to form a government with his arch-rivals from the Labour party on Thursday.

In what was by the standards of the last decade a very clear result, voters handed pro-Euro-pean parties a sweeping victory, shunning the radical fringes and dispelling concerns euroscep-tics could gain sway in a coun-try viewed as a core member of the euro zone family.

With more than 98 per-cent of votes counted, Rutte’s centre-right Liberals won 41 seats in the 150-member lower house, giving them a two-seat lead over the centre-left La-bour Party on 39 seats. “We fought this election house by house, street by street, city by city, and I’m proud. Tomor-

row I will take the first steps leading to the formation of a cabinet,” Rutte said overnight after Labour leader Diederik Samsom conceded defeat.

While the Liberals and La-bour have played down talk of forming a coalition, the two parties would together com-mand a governing majority in parliament. That would be a rare outcome in a country where three- or four-member coalitions are not unusual and coalition talks often take several months.

That could offer the pros-pect of badly-needed political stability at a time of sluggish growth and when many say po-tentially unpopular legislation is needed to reform the housing market and healthcare.

But it could also make for difficult coalition negotiations between two almost equal partners. While both parties are broadly pro-European, they have very different ideas on social and fiscal policy.

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s new president survived an assassination attempt on his second day in office when two suicide bombers blew themselves up Wednesday while trying to gain access into a heavily guarded hotel that is his tem-porary residence, officials and witnesses said.

The attack highlights the challenge that insecurity caused by an Islamist insurgency poses to Somalia’s fledgling govern-ment, which is expected to help transform the east African country from being a failed state to one with functioning government.

The two suicide bombers set off explosions after they were shot by soldiers guarding the Jazeera Hotel, while another was intercepted and shot dead as he attempted to scale the walls of the hotel’s compound, the Afri-can Union Mission for Somalia, known as Amisom, said in a statement.

more person was killed, bringing the total death toll to a minimum of five, including the three at-tackers.

The president who was elected by Parliament on Monday, was undeterred by the explosions and continued to speak to the media, AMISOM said.

Al-Shabab, a radical Islamist militia that is affiliated with al-Qaida and waging an insurgency against the Somali government, quickly claimed responsibility for the attack. Al-Shabab had opposed Mohamud’s election, saying it had been manipulated by Western powers.

Chief of Traffic Unit of Jembrana Police, I Gede Made Punia, recently said his party focused on three points of traffic post, namely the post at Sumbersari, Simpang Surapati and Rambutsiwi. Grain production of farmers in Buleleng has been unable to meet the rice needs of lo-cal communities. Every year, the Buleleng Regency lacks of nine tons of rice.

This matter was expressed by the Head of Buleleng Agriculture and Live-stock Agency, Gede Dharmaja, amidst the maiden harvest of Legowo Dua Satu planting system in Subak Kubu Gem-bong, Tukadmungga village, Buleleng, Wednesday (Sep 12).

Furthermore, Dharmaja said that all this time the production of rice field in Buleleng spreading across eight subdis-tricts was unable to meet the needs of community. This occurred due to many factors, where one of which was caused by population growth leading to the increasing demand for rice. Besides, it was also triggered by rice field conver-

sion to plantation or residential areas. As a result, paddy field was getting narrower that emptied out to decline in rice production. Farmers in the eight subdistricts had annual production reaching averagely 5.9 tons. Of this amount, Buleleng still lacked of nine tons of rice production. “Indeed, our lo-cal rice production has not been able to meet the need of community. However, this shortcoming does not lead to food crisis like in other regions because our community can easily purchase rice from other regions,” he said.

On the other hand, Dharmaja said that his agency would boost the grain produc-tion of farmers in the eight subdistricts in the future. One of the efforts to boost the local grain production was to change the cropping pattern from traditional system to modern system known as the Legowo Dua Satu system.

The cropping system began to be implemented in eight subdistricts with the assistance from field extension workers (PPL). He admitted that Le-gowo Dua Satu cropping system had been proved to boost the grain produc-tion of farmers. Dharmaja exemplified that traditional cropping system could produce 5.8 tons per hectare of land. After implementing the Legowo Dua Satu cropping system, the production jumped to some 9.4 tons.

Aside from increasing the grain production per hectare of land, with the Legowo Dua Satu cropping system, the plant cultivation would be easier than with traditional one. “It has been clearly proved so that we will continue to disseminate it. Hopefully, farmers can apply it and we will continue to provide the assistance through PPL with the field school program,” he explained. (kmb)

When the woman pulled the painting out of a garbage bag she carried it in, Craner was nearly certain the painting was a Renoir with its distinct colors, light and brushwork. A plaque on the front labeled it “Renoir.” “My gut said that it was right, but you have to then check,” Craner said.

French handwriting on the back of the canvass included a label and number. Craner turned to the cata-log by French gallery Bernheim-Je-une that’s published all of Renoir’s work. “Low and behold, it was in volume one,” she said.

An image of the painting was published in black and white, and the gallery’s stock number

matched the flea market find. So Craner made a digital image of the flea market painting, con-verted it to black and white for a closer look, and the brush strokes also matched, she said.

“It’s not a painting you would fake,” Craner said. “If you’re going to fake something, you’d fake something easier.”

Painting No. 24349 turns out to be Renoir’s painting “Paysage Bords de Seine,” which translates to Banks of the River Seine, Cra-ner determined. It dates to about 1879 and measures 6 inches by 10 inches. The painting is set for auction Sept. 29. It could fetch $75,000 or more, Craner said.

Mars rover Curiosity wrapping up health checkups

Curiosity is headed toward a spot called Glenelg where three types of terrain meet. Along the way, it will select rocks to study up close and scoop up soil. So far, the rover has used its laser to zap at rocks several feet away. Within a month or so, it plans to use its robotic arm to drill into rocks.

The rover’s ultimate destina-tion is Mount Sharp, a mountain rising from the crater floor, but it was not expected to journey there until the end of the year. From orbit, the base appeared to contain signs of past water, providing a starting point to search for the chemical building blocks of life.

On seeing a dance staged, a toddler may watch it at-tentively or its fingers move and move as if imitating the movement of the dance.

Virtually all customary villages in Bali have gamelan troupe. This troupe plays important role in expressing their entertainment arts and accompanying every ritual activity. This existence gives op-portunity to villagers from child to adult to express their artistic talent especially in dance, drama and gamelan arts. Young girls under twelve or elementary school age have a chance to participate in performing Rejang Dance. By wearing white and yellow costumes and floral decoration on head, they dance beautifully accompanied by gamelan music. Rejang Dance is one of the sacred dances performed in relation to the organization of temple anniversary or odalan. Other than putting a ba-sic love to their tradition, they also show devotional service or ngatur ayah through the arts.

When they grow older, right on entering secondary school, they join customary village youth club or Sekaa Taruna. Here, with their male friends and their broth-ers and sisters start to learn about organization. Many things can be learned through this organization. Since it has affiliation to customary village, they can learn about the making of some simple oblation under guidance of senior oblation maker and various traditional arts. In Bali, this youth club actually play important role in preparing young generation to maintain their valuable cultural heritages or to

prepare themselves for inheriting customary responsibility.

With their male counterpart, here the young girls also learn to play drama or more complex traditional arts. Popular genres of performance showed are pure entertainment and the one in com-bination with sacred dance. The latter usually features Calonarang. This magical drama involves a combination of male and female players. In essence, this Calonar-ang drama highlights the endless fight between truth and untruth symbolizing by sanctified effi-gies or tapakan like Rangda and Barong. By and large, it is also associated with ritual events at local temple.

In the following stage, when woman gets married she will en-ter the new organization, namely customary village. Having learned much about ritual works, it is now the time to practice them in wider social life. They should attend some socio-religious ac-tivities when the events engage the members of customary vil-lage. At this stage, household mother can remain to show her devotional service through the arts other than social works. Through the arts, they may join the drama or individual psalmodic singing or pasantian.

How is about their private life? It is normal as others. They also have opportunity to build career in their profession. In modern life with heterogeneous professions as today, woman also works as men do. Traditions do not impede them to reach outstanding achievement in self-employee or office job. If they work at daytime, some social works will be held at the evening.

Tradition is not something ob-solete. Even, it retains abundant inspirations to create something new and creative that is advanta-geous for modern life. However, traditions should also be reviewed and adjust to the current condi-tion without leaving behind its core. Tradition does not hinder women to get their career achieve-ment. The Dean of Faculty of Tour-ism, Udayana University, I Putu Anom, judged the weak en-forcement of bylaw No. 5/2008 regarding the tour guide against the perpetrators had made it more powerless. Rampant existence of illegal tourist guides harmed the image of Bali tourism because they tended to provide inferior services.

“Weak law enforcement has caused the proliferation of unli-censed tour guides. Even, their amount reaches 50 percent of the legal ones,” said Putu Anom in Denpasar.

He said the existence of unli-censed tourist guides in Bali clearly went up against the rules. On that account, the Government Tourism Office in the province, regency and municipality should assign a team to discipline those illegal tourist guides operating in Bali.

“The team of Bali Government Tourism Office should take deci-sive action against those illegal tourist guides. Legal sanction imposed to them should not only be a fine but whenever possible they should also be sentenced

with imprisonment. It is reason-able to be imposed in the effort to result in a deterrent effect,” he said.

He mentioned those tourist guides had to know properly about the tourism potential of Bali including the nature, culture, religion and character of Balinese people. Such cultural understand-ing was the basic for a tourist guide to explain correctly about Balinese culture to tourists.

“If surveyed, in general tourist will surely want a tourist guide who know, understand and ap-preciate the culture of Bali. By all means, tourists also want a tourist guide who really implements the Balinese culture,” he said.

According to him, to ensure the quality of tourist guides in the future, it was necessary to hold a rigorous recruitment pro-cess. Selection of tourist guide candidates had to be coordi-nated with the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association (HPI). For hotel establishment, it should be coordinated with the Indonesia Hotels and Restaurants Associa-tion (PHRI), and permit of travel

agency should be coordinated with the Association of the In-donesia Tour and Travel Agency (ASITA).

“Inevitably, the perpetrators who practice the culture and re-ligion in person will have a better understanding on their culture than tourist guides that can only memorize the Balinese culture,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesia Tourist Guides Associa-tion (HPI) of Bali, Sangtu Subaya, said that based on reports from the members of HPI the recruit-ment of Mandarin-speaking tour-ist guide candidates was carried out by entrepreneur from Batam. The travel agency entrepreneurs in Bali handling the Mandarin market were suspected to employ those recruited tourist guides.

“Bylaw on the travel agency business (UJPW) has obviously set forth that travel agencies are required to employ licensed tourist guides. The bylaw also mentions that to become a tourist guide, the candidate should pass through the process of submitting a license,” he said. (kmb27)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

As observation of Bali Post to loca-tion on Wednesday (Sep12), condition of the dam water was quite alarming. Indicator of the water discharge showed the point far below 200 cm. More dis-turbingly, a number of dam surfaces began cracking due to the drought. The stones sinking all this time had been vis-ible. The condition indicated the sharp subsidence of the dam water. Due to the drought, some tourist boats and rescue speed boats also ran aground on the edge of the dam.

Headman of Timpag, Gusti Sukawa-hana, said the decline in the dam water discharge had been going on since a few weeks. However, the decrease could not be ensured. “It happened due to the fac-tor of nature. Since it never rained, the dam water surely receded,” he said on Wednesday. Receding of the dam water was a normal phenomenon during the dry season.

The drought engulfing the dam was most complained by farmers. Deputy Secretary of the Association of Indone-sian Farmers (HKTI) of Tabanan, Gusti Subagia, claimed to receive a lot of com-plaints from farmers related to the water

crisis. “Two weeks ago, I checked the water condition at the Telaga Tunjung dam. It was indeed alarming,” he said via telephone. According to this farmer figure from Kerambitan, the water at Telaga Tunjung dam was no longer like a dam, but like ordinary river water because the height of water continued to decline sharply. This condition was estimated to have been going on since 1.5 months ago.

He explained the dam initiated in the era of President Megawati was meant to irrigate the paddy field in the area of Subak Tangguntiti and around Megati village. In the whole, the area was estimated to reach 1,000 hectares. Due to the drought, farmers were forced to stop their rice cultivation because the water supply totally stopped. “After the dam was constructed, the water supply frequently trickles, let alone the dam water continues to dry up,” he com-plained again. Representing the farmers, he hoped it would rain immediately. Therefore, the water supply to rice field could run normally and begin the plant-ing activities.

Other than being complained by

farmers, the receding water at Telaga Tunjung dam was also complained by anglers like Ketut Sukadana, 45, from Tengkudak, Penebel. As the water reced-ed, their fish catches declined as well. “I’ve been fishing from the morning, but I can only get 10 fish,” he complained. Typically, only within a few hours, he was able to catch up to two kilograms. Due to declining catches, the number of anglers diminished, too.

The man doubling as a farmer esti-mated the receding dam water reached more than three meters. Such estima-tion was based on water traces on the stone surface. Now, the distance of water traces to the dam surface was about four meters. “The dam water has continued to decline within the past few weeks,” he said. According to Su-kadana, he could angle to the dam for up to three times.

Similar opinion was disclosed by another angler, Ketut Pegeh, 50, from Jegu, Penebel. Though having angled for hours, his catch was only a few. By and large, the fish caught were like Javanese carp and other freshwater fish. (kmb30)

Semarapura (Bali Post) –Post the burning Kidul Market in Bangli, a

number of Klungkung Market sellers worried if the place where they find their income is any safe from fire risks. Connecting to that, Klung-kung Cooperative, Small Business, Industrial and Trade Agency Head, Nengah Becik, last Wednesday (12/9) directed a team to check the electricity installation also giving guidance to sellers.

Becik admitted Klungkung Market is sensi-tive to fire so many of it sparked during the dry season. ISTANBUL — Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has arrived in Turkey to visit Syrian refugees in her role as special envoy for the U.N. refugee agency.

Turkey’s Anadolu news agency says Jolie and UNHCR chief Anto-nio Guterres are expected to visit refugee camps along the border between Turkey and Syria on Thursday. Reports say Jolie will later travel to Ankara, the Turkish capital, for talks with officials who are handling the humanitarian crisis.

Turkey hosts about 80,000 Syrians who have fled the 18-month conflict in their country. Earlier this week, Jolie and Guterres visited Syrian refu-gees in Jordan, which is also sheltering those who have fled the civil war in neighboring Syria.

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc’s new iPhone goes on sale on Friday with a bigger screen and 4G wireless technology, as the company seeks to safe-guard its edge over rivals like Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Google Inc.

The iPhone 5 fulfilled many of the expectations laid out by gadget geeks and technology analysts ahead of its Wednesday unveiling but offered few surprises to give Apple shares -- already near record highs -- another major kick.

“There is not a wow factor because everything you saw today is evolu-tionary. I do think they did enough to satisfy,” said Michael Yoshikami, chief executive of wealth management

company Destination Wealth Management.

Other industry analysts speculated about what else was in Apple’s product pipe-line ahead of the crucial year-end holiday season, especially since the company stayed

mum about an oft-rumored TV device or a smaller iPad.

The consumer electronics giant that in 2010 popularized tablet computing with the iPad has given no hints on whether it plans a smaller version to match cheaper tablets from the likes of Google or Amazon.com Inc.

“We would really like to see the iPad Mini in the product offering for the all-important holiday quarter. They still have time,” said Channing Smith, co-manager of the Capital Advisors Growth Fund. “As soon as we see that,

we will have more conviction about the stock heading into the final quarter.”

Apple shares ended the day up 1.4 percent at $669.79.

The latest iPhone comes as Apple faces competition beyond current key competitors Samsung and Google. Late entrant Microsoft Corp is now trying to push its Windows Phone 8 operating system as an alternative to Apple and Android, the most-used smartphone operating system in the world.

Analysts have forecast sales of 10 million to 12 million of the new iP-hones in this month alone.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook kicked off the event in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center but it was market-ing chief Phil Schiller who introduced the iPhone 5 and took the audience through the new phone’s features.

According to him, the restricted natural resources of Indo-nesia inefficiently and improperly managed by the government could likely threaten the distribution or domestic needs. The situation was feared to affect the condition or would cause a pressure on the economy and banking sector in Bali.

Similar opinion was also expressed by Branch Manager of QNB Kesawan Denpasar, I Ketut Sirta. So far, the economic and banking condition in Bali remained very positive. European crisis was predicted to affect the economy and banking sector of Bali.
