Virginia is located midway between New York and Florida and borders Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital. Virginia is home to a variety of landscapes, from the mountains in the western part of the state to the sandy coastal plains along the Atlantic Ocean. The different regions across Virginia offer a wide range of outdoor activities, such as skiing and snowboarding in the mountains. Golfing, hiking, bicycling and camping are year-round activities in Virginia, and the coastal regions provide plenty of opportunities for year-round water sports such as surfing and kayaking.

OUR LOCATION

NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIAChristopher Newport University is located in Newport News, Virginia, adjacent to the 550-acre Mariners’ Museum and Park, the Noland Trail, and the James River. Newport News is geographicallythe fourth-largest city in the state. Virginia Beach, VA

CNU is located in the heart of one of the most historic — and beautiful — areas in the United States. Just a short drive away are significant historic sites, such as Colonial Williamsburg, and great beaches on the Virginia coast.

• Colonial Williamsburg, just 20 minutes away, is the nation’s largest outdoor living-history museum. Pre- Revolutionary times come alive through reconstructed homes, stores and taverns populated by interpreters and actors. Williamsburg is also home to Busch Gardens amusement park and Water Country USA water park.

• Virginia Beach offers world-class beaches, great water sports and a rich nightlife — just 45 minutes from campus.

• Washington, D.C., just over two hours away, is the capital of the United States. You’ll find numerous free, public museums and the nation’s most treasured buildings, monuments and memorials — the National Mall, the Capitol, Washington Monument, the White House and Lincoln Memorial, among others.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMSPRESIDENT’S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM (PLP)

As part of PLP, each student earns a minor in leadership studies. Through challenging courses, public service, personal development, foreign study and other targeted opportunities, PLP empowers leadership students to make a difference — to become caring, knowledgeable and effective leaders for America and the world. Each student receives an annual residential scholarship (including a study abroad stipend), as well as priority housing in a PLP Learning Community and priority course registration.

HONORS PROGRAM

This unique program offers students more freedom to customize their academic experience for their personal and professional aspirations by reducing the liberal learning core requirements. This allows more time for interdisciplinary seminar-style courses and challenges students by means of study abroad, independent research, internships, jobs and volunteer experience relevant to their passions. Each student receives an annual residential scholarship (including a study abroad stipend), as well as priority housing in an Honors Learning Community and priority course registration.

“Being part of this awesome university

has been a blessing. The class sizes are

small, and professors are very helpful and

interested in the success of the students. My dream is to work in international

business, and coming to CNU is one step

toward my goal. The Luter School of

Business is accredited by the Association

to Advance Collegiate Schools

of Business (AACSB), which

means my degree is accepted

all around the world.”

Nearly 60 percent of your classes will have 19 or fewer students, giving you direct access to experts in their fields — teacher-scholars who provide outstanding instruction, conduct groundbreaking research, and publish books and articles with-in their areas of expertise. Our professors’ passion is teaching, and you’ll enjoy the intellectual challenge of working with them.

Student-faculty partnerships provide the most powerful teaching anywhere. At CNU you don’t have to be a graduate student to tackle cutting-edge research. Our undergraduates

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

work alongside faculty mentors on key research initiatives, make conference presentations, and publish with faculty co- authors in books and scholarly journals.

Our students’ involvement in research spans diverse topics — from the influence of the Inter-net to the wetlands, artificial in-telligence and Native American artists, to name a few — and many lead to presentations at local, regional and national con-ferences. Plus, CNU provides financial support to students for research projects.

We empower you to take an active role in your own education. Through under-graduate research, educa-tion becomes less about memorizing and more about discovering. You can conduct research on a topic of your own interest and discover something new!

Graduate and professional schools, as well as future employers, are increasingly interested in graduates who can contribute to research and interdisciplinary teams to tackle today’s tough problems.

Nearly 4,000 CNU students live in luxurious facilities. Our residence halls and apartment complexes have won rave reviews from students and parents alike. In fact, The Princeton Review has ranked our residence halls among the top in the nation in the group’s “Best College Dorms” category.

All student accommodations include

at CNU provides a great educa-

tional opportunity that can be

used anywhere around the world.

It’s a challenge to adapt to a new

culture, but the students and

people you meet at CNU are all so

nice. Everyone says ‘hi’ to each

other, which was new to me.

People here also help out in any

way they can, whatever your

“CNU is a very open and inclusive community;

there are so many opportunities to get involved,

which is extremely important when studying or

living abroad. Don’t be shy. Speak up, talk to your

fellow Captains and be an active participant on

campus.”

Page 13: International Admission Guide

College is much more than classes and assignments. It’s also serious fun! Student life contributes greatly to your CNU experience, and you’re sure to find many activities to peak your interest.

CNU offers a wide number of diverse clubs and extra-curricular opportunities — more than 200 in all! You’ll also enjoy various special events scheduled year-round, from comedians and coffeehouse music performances to game nights, movies and Springfest. Additional activities and groups include sporting events, Greek life, the CNU Marching Captains, CNU cheerleaders and the Storm dance team.

STUDENT LIFE

Page 14: International Admission Guide

CNU has one of America’s most successful NCAA Division III programs, producing 80 individual and team championships and more than 600 All-Americans. Nearly every year we have the top winning percentage among all Virginia schools.

In addition to our varsity teams, CNU has club and intramural sports teams. Unlike NCAA collegiate athletics, club sports are student initiated, oper-ated and managed while members work to fund their activities. They can be either competitive or recreational. Competitive clubs play against other collegiate teams while typically requiring greater time, travel and financial commitment, and may involve tryouts and leagues. Recreational clubs focus more on enjoyment, yet sometimes involve matchups against area schools.

Students of all athletic abilities seeking healthy on-campus competition can take part in intramural sports, a great way to be part of a team without the long-term commitment.

CNU CLASS OF 2014

HOMETOWN: Niederlenz, SwitzerlandMAJORS: Communication and FrenchACTIVITIES:

• Varsity Tennis• Lambda Pi Eta (Communication Honor Society) • Pi Delta Phi (French Honor Society)• Italian Club• International Club — founder

Not only did I come to CNU to get the “exciting study abroad experience,” but even more so in order to be able to combine my academic studies with playing tennis on a women’s varsity team. I find the new and unknown irresistible and am driven by curiosity to meet new people and places in this world.

The CNU community is very friendly and supportive, so even though it was not easy to adjust to everything at the beginning, there was always some- one there to help me and answer my questions — people here really bend over backward for you, and I wanted to do the same for others. I helped establish and now oversee the International Club at CNU to support and mentor new students as well as help them adjust to a new envi- ronment, language and culture.

Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or want to find out more about my experience abroad at CNU.
