Often the architecture of new buildings and new cities is great, but where is the equivalent intelligence in the design of systems that support enhanced ways of life - not only for the wealthy, but as a fundamental baseline of services?

How could the internet of things contribute to the kinds of cites we would want to live in? In this session we will explore:If everything is addressable, what would we want to address, and what systems could we rethink?

How could we engage people in completely new ways with their livelihoods, healthcare, education, and participation? How can we support independence and economic viability on a wider basis? What infrastructure would we need?

We will be looking at city scale systems - using the internet of things as the starting point for thinking about a whole range of informatics, a new range of uses and to rapidly develop some systemic ideas around this.

10 people, 2 packs of post-its and a facilitator.

This workshop worked in two groups to explore how the IOT could be engaged in cities and enhance life.

As a starting point we suggested different systems of the city as drivers of the ideas. Without needing to be too dogmatic about the topic, the groups could use them as starting

points to explore what form their city might take.

Start conceiving of your city in 3 layers of thinking • first, the functional space - where people are, based on their activities.• second, the public realm - where people move through, and gather. • and finally, the layer of flows between things, where people and things may move and disperse.

Where and when in your city could ubiquitous technology support your citizens?

What forms could this take?

What interventions might a system make?

Show the different activities are being

enabled by your ideas, and how these benefit the people in the city.

What would you want to address, and what systems can you rethink?

How could we engage people in completely new ways within the scope of this theme?

For example what can we project from what we know about our behaviors now?

What behaviors does boredom create?

What behaviors does fear create?

What behaviors does insecurity of home create?

What behaviors does lack of control create?

What behaviors does engagement create?

Specially designed stimulus materials were given to the group to bring out some of the less obvious thoughts, and inspire some new connections.

This included the wonderful Everyware, McCullough’s Digital Ground, our previous work and what we know about city design forms.

Now go deeperWhat are the addressable objects in these systems? How do they connect to

each other? What is now made visible?

What is invisible? What do you think would

be the value to people?Give your system a name, and

start identifying components and touchpoints.

Create a service model in cartoon formCreate one example of a street level

touchpoint.

Services in the City of Participation

A pop-up debating space was the idea from this group - connected to people throught their everyday devices, and bringing a new level of local democracy, scalable to larger or more local issues.

The construction of the pop-up space would announce the debate. People could connect directly with what’s being talked about and each other in real time.

Lightwalk in the City of movement

Our city is self sufficient and self supporting.

Our service is called the Lightwalk. Nodes are built into the sidewalk.

As people walk over these nodes, energy is released and captured centrally to power lighting and other energy needs the City has.

In terms of your specific city, what forms of new feedback loops are possible?

4“Because we know where they are (through the information gathered by the node sensors) we can switch on the lights nearby. This is one of the services we have developed for our City. We think this one will work.”
