Dear Lord, As we enter this Solemn and

Holy Season, we pray that you would

send us your Holy Spirit upon us that we

might prepare ourselves for these

coming 40 days of Lent. Even though we

may no longer wear sackcloth and ashes,

we do seek to humble ourselves so that

we can understand the magnificence of Your Love for us as

You humbled Yourself and gave Your Life on the Cross that

we might receive the gift of Eternal Glory with You.

AMEN.

Year of Mercy

Stretching Our Limits Reading I: Isaiah 6:1–2a, 3–8 (call of Isaiah) Reading II: 1 Corinthians 15:1–11 (Christ’s resurrection) Gospel: Luke 5:1b–11 (call of the first disciples)

Key Passage: “Simon Peter fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” (Luke 5:8,10b) Question for Adult: When have you felt God’s merciful forgiveness? Did it strengthen you? Question for Youth: When are you afraid or feel inadequate to help others? How has faith in God strengthened you? Mercy Defined:

• Mercy goes beyond the issues of who is responsible. Mer-cy is simply love’s response to suffering.

• Mercy is expressed as patience with that old woman who has taken too long to find her coupons in the checkout lane. It is kindness toward the friend who has come with the same old problem once again, even if you’re tired of hearing about it. When someone hurts you, mercy is turn-ing the other cheek.

• Mercy makes it easy for your friend to come to you for ad-vice or to apologize.

• Mercy eagerly helps, even if the need for help is an inter-ruption in your day.

• Mercy always thinks of the mitigating circumstances in the life of the other. No throwing them a look; no grunts of dis-approval; no sniping to others.

EASTEREASTEREASTEREASTER

The diocesan Ashes to Easter Lenten Mission Campaign begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 10. We invite each family to take a mission box home in support of the missionary works of the Diocese of Austin. As the Catechism states, “The sea-sons and days of penance in the course of the liturgical year (Lent, and Each Friday in memory of the Lord) are intense moments of the Church’s penitential practice. These times are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, and pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and alms giving, and fraternal sharing (charitable and missionary works)” (CCC 1438). Please sup-port this long-standing campaign.
