National Vocation Awareness Week, January 9-14, 2012 Pope John Paul II said, “There is an urgent need for a more widespread and deeply felt conviction that all members of the Church have the grace and responsibility to look after vocations.” The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord marks Jesus’ initiation into public ministry. With this celebration we recommit ourselves to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Initiated through our baptism we too are commissioned to proclaim Good News with our lives. The observance of National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) began in 1976 when the National Conference of Catholic Bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year as the beginning of NVAW. In 1997 this celebration was moved to coincide with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During the week, Parish priests and Deacon Frank will speak to the youth during religion education classes at the school and church.

The Annual Pastoral Appeal Campaign for 2011 is coming to an end this month. I would like to thank all of you who have generously supported this appeal. Our goal is $233,674 and to date we have collected close to $220,000 from 834 families. If you are one of those who have not yet made a donation or if you can help us reach our goal for 2011, now is the time to do that. Please write APA on your check or on an envelope from the pews to make an additional donation.

Fr. Michael Diocese of St. Petersburg ● 2011 Annual Pastoral Appeal

You Make a Difference

Please pray with us for an increase in vocations to

the ordained ministry and the consecrated life:

Lord Jesus, as You once called the first disciples to make them fishers of men,

let your sweet invitation continue to resound: Come! Follow Me!

Give young men and women the grace of responding quickly to Your voice.

Support your bishops, priests and consecrated people in their apostolic labor.

Grant perseverance to our seminarians and to all those who are carrying out the ideal of a life

totally consecrated to Your service. Awaken in our community a missionary eagerness.

Lord, SEND WORKERS TO YOUR HARVEST and do not allow humanity to be lost for the lack of pastors,

missionaries and people dedicated to the cause of the Gospel. Mary, Mother of the Church, the model of every vocation, help us to say "Yes" to the Lord Who calls us to cooperate

in the divine plan of salvation. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

(Pope John Paul II)

Thank you Lord for our priests and deacons!

All kings shall pay him homage,

all nations shall serve him. — Psalm 72:11

PROMISE FULFILLED Isaiah reminds the people of God that the land shall be restored to their possession, they shall rejoice to see their people return from the bondage of exile, and they shall be a light to the nations. In other words, through the people of Israel, the Savior shall come to all people who seek God with a sincere heart. This brings joy and the radiance of God’s glory to all the world and to all people everywhere. Through the fidelity of the people of God, and through God’s fidelity to them, all people shall become God’s children and rejoice in the fulfillment of God’s promise to Israel. Copyright © J. S. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Before long, people will be throwing Mardi Gras beads in the streets of New Orleans—purple, gold, and green. A few will be in on the secret: the colors of the beads are de-rived from the gifts of the magi. Gold for wealth, purple for power, green for good health. The gifts are also a key to the identity of the Christ Child: the incense for God; the gold for a king; the myrrh, fragrant burial ointment for one who comes to die. Centuries ago, today’s feast bore the heavy burden of celebrating all the manifestations of Christ’s identity: the birth of Jesus, the coming of the magi, the baptism of the Lord, the wedding feast at Cana. It was too much for one day. Fortunate-ly the one day has blossomed into a whole season of grateful celebration, stretching behind us into Advent, and ahead of us into the Baptism of the Lord and to Christ’s coming again in glory. Tonight, be sure to light the Christmas lights, and gather at the crèche for a favorite carol and a prayer. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK

January 8, 2012, The Epiphany of the Lord At the Mass during the Day

O God, who on this day revealed your Only Begotten Son to the nations

by the guidance of a star, grant in your mercy

that we, who know you already by faith, may be brought to behold the beauty of your sublime glory.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Reflection question: What can I do this week to come to know God better? Collect text from the English translation of The Roman Missal, © 2010, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Company, Inc.

We will then be aware of your par-ticipation and you will not be moved to inactive status.

Congratulations to Rosaura and Severo Munoz who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary!

HEALING MASS While every Mass is a healing Mass, on January 14th Fr. Michael will be celebrating a special Mass of healing where the Sacrament of the Sick will be administered to

those parishioners who are in need of it. According to the norms of the Church, those in need of this sacrament are members of the faithful who are in danger of death due to sickness or old age. If you are not in need of this sacrament, even though you won’t receive it, we still invite you to attend and pray for those who will. Also, an integral part of this sacrament is the forgiveness of sins; therefore, for one to fully receive the graces conferred in this sacrament, one should make a good confession prior to attending this Mass.

—Fray Gilberto CavazosGlz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
