Santa took time out of his busy sched-

ule to stop in for a quick visit during the

4:30 family mass on Christmas Eve.

He gave candy canes to the children

after Mass and then spent a few quiet

moments adoring Baby Jesus.

AROUND THE DIOCESE Catholic Days at the Capitol Join Catholics from across Florida as they gather in Tallahassee for Catholic Days at the Capitol, February 7-8, 2012 (returning February 9, 2012). This annual event gives Catholics a voice in shaping our state laws. The program includes a legislative briefing, prescheduled meetings with elected officials, a luncheon with the Florida bishops and legislators, and the Red Mass of the Holy Spirit celebrated by the bishops of Florida. This year is special for the Diocese of St. Petersburg since our own Senator Fasano and Representative Ahern will be reading at the Red Mass. Round-trip bus transportation is available for $60.00 on a first-come-first served basis. Event registration form is available at life.dosp.org (look under upcoming Life Ministry Events) or by contacting Sabrina at 727-344-1611 *325; [email protected]. Preregistration is required. Don’t continue to be bound by the shame of an abortion. Be forgiven and set free. Call Project Rachel 1-888-456-HOPE (4673), or email [email protected]. ANNULMENT SEMINAR On January 25, 2012 at St. Lawrence Parish, Tampa, from 7pm to 8:30 pm, the Marriage Tribunal for the Diocese of St. Petersburg will present a seminar on “Annulment in the Catholic Church.” This informative presentation will be given by a judge from the Tribunal and will provide an opportunity to explore the various grounds for marriage nullity, dispel myths about annulments and answer questions. If you have experienced a failed marriage, or know someone who has, or are just curious about the annulment process, please consider this your personal invitation to the upcoming seminar: ‘Annulments in the Catholic Church.”

THE BLESSING WE RECEIVE The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is pro-claimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invocation of God’s loving kindness, the shining glory of God’s face turned toward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God’s own peace! Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the im-age of the invisible God, God’s face is shown to us and God’s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kindness. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION On this feast, we can see how devotion to Mary has been a beacon of hope to the sick throughout history. In the new cathedral of Los Angeles, the faithful enter through a single door topped by a striking sculpture of Mary with arms stretched down in compassion. Sculpted into the massive bronze doors are the titles of Mary most treasured by various cultures. Many of them speak of how the sick are consoled by a sense of Mary’s presence. Dorothy Day once recalled St. Bonaven-ture’s remark that after the Lord’s long forty days of fasting in the desert, when he was diminished and weak from his struggle, the angels who minis-tered to him went first to the Blessed Mother’s house. There they saw the soup that was on her stove, and took some to the Lord so that he would delight in it even more since his mother had pre-pared it. “Of course,” said Dorothy Day matter-of-factly. In praying the rosary and savoring the sto-ries of Mary’s steadfast love in the face of all suf-fering, the sick are strengthened by one of our tradi-tion’s most shining treasures, and the whole Church is enriched. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK January 1, 2012, Mary, the Holy Mother of God O God, who through the fruitful virginity of Blessed Mary bestowed on the human race the grace of eternal salvation, grant, we pray, that we may experience the intercession of her, through whom we were found worthy to receive the author of life, our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Reflection question: What can I take to the Blessed Virgin Mary in prayer this week?

— Lucas 2:19
