“On a hill far away, stood an old rugged cross…” is a line

from a familiar old hymn called

“The Old Rugged Cross.” It has been written about, sung

about, depicted in art and visualized in many hearts. That

cross stood between two oth-ers. Each made of wood, these

crosses were made from trees.

The story reminds us that Je-sus hung in the middle while

on each side of him there were men who were thieves. One

decides to follow Jesus, the

other does not. Leonard Sweet, a United Methodist

theologian, believes the story of the cross is best told when

we display the cross in threes because of the events that

happened there. It should re-

mind us of the call to respond to the work of salvation and

love which took place on the cross in the middle.

In our worship space at the

Celebration Center there is a new cross flanked by two palm

trees. Symbolically, this re-minds us that three trees

stood on a hill the day that

Jesus was crucified. The work of the One in the middle was

for everyone, including the two who hung by his sides. There

is an important call for a re-sponse to His love. Our choice

to receive His gift and sacrifice
