It often seems the only time Black Texans think about Black-owned businesses is when it’s time to complain about shoddy customer service, or the difficulty in finding them conveniently, or their failure to carry preferred brands. Rarely do we equate these perceived shortfalls to the rate at which we patronize these businesses. It’s actually a pretty simple formula: support Black-owned businesses and (magically) customer service will improve; they will be able to expand new locations and carry the brands you can’t live without.

This current failure to consider Black-owned businesses has not always been the way Black Texans viewed the critical need to support our businesses. Did you know that the FIRST Black chamber of commerce was started in Dallas, Texas in 1926? Keep in mind this was only five years after Tulsa’s Black Wall Street was firebombed into oblivion for simply being successful in business. Nine years later, in 1935, Houston’s Black business community gave birth to the nation’s second Black chamber, the Houston Citizen’s Chamber of Commerce (now the Greater Houston Black Chamber).

Here’s the good part: Just a year later, in 1936, the leaders of the Dallas Black Chamber and the Houston Citizen’s Chamber -- along with business men and women from across the state -- met in Dallas during the Texas Centennial celebration and formed the Texas State Negro Chamber of Commerce, the predecessor organization of the current Texas Association of African American Chambers of Commerce (TAAACC). Their commitment to the economic future of Black Texans spawned a network of chambers across the state, in big cities and small towns alike.

From Texarkana to Corpus Christi to the Panhandle to Sherman-Denison (tiny Ennis still boasts their Ennis Negro Chamber, dating from 1947!) these businessmen and women went about the business of business.

Their concerns, of course, were not only with profit making. These visionaries realized that to the extent that Black Texans could stabilize, develop and grow Black-owned businesses, we could employ community residents, maximize our political muscle and significantly improve public education. Sound familiar?

Nearly 80 years later these simple goals continue to frustrate those of us in the business of Black business. Twenty-three chambers/business organizations currently comprise TAAACC’s membership while four new chambers are in varying stages of development. All this activity indicates that – despite the difficulties associated with being Black in

business in Texas – there is still strong support for growing Black business with a goal of strengthening employment, political power and educational outcomes.

In a renewed effort to reacquaint Black Texans with their historic connection to business development and reignite the passion that gave birth to America’s first Black chamber and first statewide business organization, the Texas Association of African American Chambers of Commerce and the Texas Publishers Association have committed to doing our part to keep you abreast of issues impacting Black-owned business in our state. The publishers of Texas’ 26 Black-owned newspapers, businessmen and women in an industry that has been hit especially hard by social media and the “Digital Age,” are still Black Texas’ most reliably trustworthy source of information affecting our lives. Clear, distortion-free communication is absolutely

critical to the growth, development and expansion of Texas’ Black-owned businesses and we are elated about the prospects our working together will mean for Black businesses in our state.

Well before the 2020 census, Texas will have the 2nd largest Black population among the 50 states. Pitifully, even in this state’s dynamic economy, Black Texans lag behind in business receipts, political power, employment and educational attainment -- even after nearly 80 years of effort to improve these outcomes.

I am optimistic that Black Texans will make the connection between where and how they spend their hard-earned money and the difficulties we continue to experience in other areas. I know we can, because brave men and women came together in 1936 when no hotel would sell them a room, no restaurant would seat them and they couldn’t try on a suit unless they bought it first… their answer: have your own hotel, restaurant and clothing store. Seems like the perfect time to go “back to the future…”

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO FIX OUR SCHOOLSBy Royce West One of my key responsibilities as a Senator is to ask questions about the hundreds of new laws and proposed changes that pass through the Legislature each session to ensure we will accomplish what is best for Texas. But when I come home and spend time with the residents of District 23, I become the one who answers the questions and, for many years now, one of the questions I heard most often was "when are we going to fix our schools?" In my view, we are long past the time for the answer to be a single word - now. As a long-time advocate and champion of public education, I want to send a clear message that I will no longer support mediocrity from low-performing schools. The challenge of educating our children has reached a critical point. There are currently nearly 150,000 young Texans assigned to failing schools. Every day that passes without a solution moves those students towards academic uncertainty. That cycle must be broken and I believe there is an innovative approach that we must consider. The establishment of a statewide turnaround district, currently being debated in the Texas Legislature, will give us the ability to make a meaningful intervention in chronically failing schools. Giving the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Commissioner the authority to create and oversee a statewide turnaround district will also send a message to school districts that we are serious about turning failing campuses into successful ones. We have been patient and we have tried lots of strategies, but ultimately, our priority is the

child and I believe every child has a right to a quality education. The statewide turnaround district will serve as the equivalent of an Intensive Care Unit for those schools, staffed by public school teachers and specialists who have a track record working with public school campuses that are in big trouble. They can

offer the kind of specialized a t t e n t i o n t h a t m a k e s a difference. Currently, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has four options to deal with a fa i l ing school . TEA can "reconstitute" it by replacing staff or "repurpose" it by changing the campus specialty and focus. Or, TEA can hire education experts to operate the campus, with the final option

being closure. A statewide turnaround district adds another meaningful intervention option or as I like to say "another tool in the toolbox" to retool chronically low performing schools. Implementing this turnaround process in Texas will ensure the dreams of young Texans and the families who want the best for them are not only preserved, but also energized by genuine opportunity. I have supported public schools during the entire 22 years I have served in the Texas Senate and my commitment to Texas public school system is stronger than ever. However, my patience with promises and studies is wearing thin because many children are aging out of school every year wi thout rece iv ing the educat ional opportunities they deserve. A statewide turnaround district is not a silver bullet that will magically fix our schools - there is no such thing - but it will provide immediate and focused help to those failing schools where too many of our children have been stuck for far too long. It will also send a message to those schools that "help is on the way" to get them back on track. Our children cannot wait. We must take steps to fix our failing schools now.

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

“Project Head Start” was launched by President Lyndon B. Johnson on May 18, 1965. Originally designed as an eight week summer demonstration project, Head Start has expanded into an array of preschool programs that provide children from low-income families with a comprehensive program that prepares

them for successful entry into kindergarten, and illuminates the pathway towards a brighter future.

Educational experts view Head Start as our nation’s most comprehensive and effective program that prepares children for school. With the participation of parents, Head Start includes education, nutrition and health services for children from impoverished backgrounds and their families. In the past 50 years, approximately 25 million of our nation’s children have benefited as participants in Head Start environments.

Nearly 72,000 children and their families were beneficiaries of Head Start programs in 2014. I am pleased that 4,068 of those who were served reside in the 30th Congressional District of Texas, which I am honored to serve. Head Start is instrumental in uplifting families in Texas and throughout our nation, providing them with resources that allow children to reach their full potential.

Educators and social scientists alike believe that participants in Head Start are

more likely to earn their high school diplomas, continue on to college and become self-reliant wage earners than are those who do not have the early childhood development experience that the program affords.

This success is possible because of the access to services that Head Start provides to children. It is extremely important that during this critical period in our nation’s history, we increase our support and expand the Head Start program. Every child in America should be afforded an equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of their race or their socio-economic background.

President Obama recently called on all Americans, including leaders of private and philanthropic organizations, as well as leaders on the city, state and county levels, to make earnest investments in our next generation of thinkers, dreamers and doers. The development of young people today ensures our democracy in the future. We cannot afford not to act.

We can help hardworking, low-income families build pathways that lead them and their children out of poverty. With our assistance they can become members of the middle class. If our society is serious about giving children brighter futures, we must increase our investment in Head Start programs so that more children can participate.

Now is the time to expand upon the vision of President Lyndon Baines Johnson and the “Great Society” programs that resulted in the creation of Head Start.

We must close the opportunity gap that so many children in our country unfairly face. We must give them a chance to succeed. It is in their best interest and in the larger society’s best interest as well.

JOHNSON: Half a century of Head Start

Eddie Bernice Johnson represents Texas’ 30th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. She is the first registered nurse elected to the US Congress.

"Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society."

Heading into the run-off election, after a hotly-contested race to fill the District 3 seat currently held by Dallas City Council member Vonciel Jones Hill, frontrunner Casey Thomas continues to garner support with the recent endorsement by one of his challengers in the May 9, 2015 election.

Joining Team Thomas is business executive and pastor, Gerald Britt, Jr., who praised Thomas as he encouraged voters to join him in ensuring the educator a seat on the Council.

"Casey Thomas has earned the opportunity to serve District 3 and the city of Dallas,” said Rev. Britt. “He is the best choice in this election to represent our interest on the city council. I'll be casting my vote for him and urge you to do so as well."A school teacher in the Dallas ISD, Thomas has a strong history of leadership and coalition building.

A native Dallasite, he attended Dallas ISD schools and graduated from

Skyline High School. A graduate of the University of North Texas with a Bachelor of business administration degree, he served as Vice President of the Progressive Black Student Organization and also was elected to the Student Government Association.

While a student at UNT, Thomas became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc. (Zeta Upsilon chapter) and he helped to charter the National Pan-Hellenic Council on the campus.

He also laid the groundwork for expanding the Buddy System, a student mentoring program that is designed to increase retention of students of color. After graduation, he became an educator. He has spent his career in education, working in Cedar Hill ISD and Dallas ISD. While in Dallas ISD, he established the Young Men of Distinction Male mentoring program, at A. Maceo Smith High School in 2000.

He also is the President and CEO of CLT Consulting, an educational and political consulting company. He serves

as a deacon and the Sunday School Superintendent at True Lee Missionary Baptist Church in Dallas.

Thomas was the youngest President of the Dallas branch of the NAACP in the ninety year history of the organization. Under his leadership, several community partnerships were formed.

He also has served on the Mountain Vista II homeowner association board, and he currently serves as the crime watch chair for his neighborhood. He served on the City of Dallas Community Development Commission for 10 years, most recently as the chair. He writes a weekly column in The Dallas Examiner.

Thomas is married to LaKisha Thomas, an assistant principal at an elementary school. They are the parents of two sons, Chad and Cornell West Thomas.

Early voting begins on June 1 and will run through June 9. Election day is on June 13, 2015.

Tom Ford – Jay Z

June is officially Black Music Month so let’s get it started the right way. Immo be Trill (a combination of the words True and Real or in some circles “The attempt to be True with oneself and Real with all.”)

Let’s keep it one hundud; I agree with Jay-Z...I ain’t feelin’ this whack vibe you Negroes got on Facebook and Twitter or as I call them Fakebook and Quitter.

I went directly to your FB page the other day. I did a double take and looked again, but I still can't tell what's up with you by looking at your FB page.

How is it that a gizmo of technological grandeur can be reduced to a gossip spot and housing a bunch of fake pictures?

I mean how needy and unsecure do you have to be to change your homemade glamour shots daily?

It doesn’t matter how much you rearrange that weave and slap on them extended length lashes…you look like that old chick in the club. You don’t want to be known as “THOT.”

And bruh; you keep posting new selfies donning them designer knock-off shades, gangster leaning in that raggedy assed truck. We can tell that you ain’t matured a bit

since you graduated high school or pledged that damn fraternity. I assume since I see you on FB that your children are all safe and well. Support payments up to date and you enjoy them on the regular?

You have to forgive me; I'm FB deficient because there's so much going on.   Did you realize that while you were repackaging America's funniest videos from six years ago, the Dallas Independent School District is in a mess?

Jim Mitchell, who acts as the ultra-Conservative brother on the Dallas Morning News editorial board, had a helluva headline last week. “STAAR results; Another lost generation of Dallas students is in the pipeline.”

The same paper that once defended DISD Superintendent Mike Miles has had to admit that four years of declining test scores is getting scary.

And while y’all was stylin’ and profilin’ on FakeBook, the Mayor and three of your soon-to-be-ex Negro councilpersons (Thank God) were adamant that Miles should remain.

Somebody posted a heinous denial of justice in your backyard, but you didn't read it. Mothers Against Police Brutality uses Facebook to keep you informed. Here is the MAPB press release from last week that I bet you didn’t read.

“MAPB expected that Arlington Police Officer

Thedrick Andres would not be indicted in the death of Juan May last June, after the two had fought on a party bus in Duncanville (at Pappadeaux Restaurant).

Shortly after Juan's death, we met with Assistant Chief Jaime Ayala to make sure Andres was taken off patrol and his weapon taken from him.

Andres was off duty, not in uniform, when he physically fought with May after a dispute on a party bus.

Andres left the bus, went to his car, retrieved his police weapon, and shot May to death the night of June 22, 2014. Thedrick Andres killed Juan May as a private citizen, not in any official capacity.

But he was treated by Duncanville officers differently than any private citizen suspected of homicide would have been treated. He was not arraigned, not taken to jail, not given a drug or alcohol test.”

I got a deal. Play on Facebook everyday and then let’s all promise to go to a protest or just meet somewhere once a month to do a good deed for some soul that could never repay us. That way I won’t complain and maybe, like in the 50’s and 60’s, some of these injustices will begin to subside.

Being truthful and real (Trill) we need 140 characters in the streets and not just in tweets. Talk is cheap and we got too much of our lives invested in Facebook and Twitter.

Miles’ Musings

By Miles Jaye Davis

Miles Jaye is a musician, singer, author, actor, chef and award-

winning writer.

B.B. the KING

It was a big night at the 40th annual Gracie Awards with actress Tracee Ellis Ross as the host and actress Cicely Tyson receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, while other honorees included Iyanla VanZant, actress Julia Roberts, talk show host Robin Roberts and Isha Sesay for Outstanding Anchor-News or News Magazine - CNN.

But the highlight for Floridians, Florida A&M University alumni, students and friends, as well as media mogul Tyler Perry’s fans, was the honor bestowed upon Angela Robinson - Outstanding Female Actor- One to Watch OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network/The Haves and The Have Nots.

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Robinson attended Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fl., where she also reigned as Miss FAMU.

Following her graduation from FAMU, where she actually had another successful actress -- T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh of In Living Color and That’s So Raven fame, as a roommate; the multi-talented singer, actress and dancer began her professional acting career appearing in Broadway and Off-Broadway productions and performing in several popular shows, including The Color Purple, Dreamgirls and The Wizard of Oz. She has also appeared on an episode of episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Then in 2013, she became a household name when she first appeared as Veronica Harrington in the Oprah Winfrey Network primetime soap opera, The Haves and the Have Nots which is written, produced and directed by Mr. Perry.

She’s the person viewers love to hate. As Harrington, she is “every woman.” A successful attorney and the wife to a politician, she has a mind of her own and she doesn’t mind sharing it. Harrington is meticulous and doesn’t break under pressure. Unfortunately for her, she is not dealing with her son’s sexuality. Instead of accepting his lifestyle, she has garnered the wrath of her husband and others as she continues in her quest to prove that her son is a heterosexual male.

Always impeccably dressed and refusing to back down from a fight, even when

facing a convict, Harrington has viewers spewing hatred on social media sites one moment and then before the show is over, those same fans are praising her.

Harrington has a tongue that is just waiting for its next victim to lash out at. If you cross her, don’t go to sleep at night.

The countdown is on for the next season of The Haves and The Have Nots with the third season beginning on June 30. With the cliffhangers that Perry provides fans are sure to be glued to the screen on Tuesday nights.

Once fans come into contact with Robinson, they realize just how great an actress she is because is not definitely not a real-life Harrington!

In addition to being able to live tweet with her on Twitter during the popular show, Robinson is in high demand as a speaker and fans will have a chance to meet and greet her at the 21st Annual Cheryl Smith’s Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at USA Bowl, 10920 Composite Drive, in Dallas.

In the meantime, Robinson’s busy and demanding schedule has her on the go. Whether she’s speaking, attending a charitable function or teaching acting techniques with her husband, Scott Whitehurst, her popularity continues to grow at a rapid pace.

WIth a strong following in Dallas, her visit in June his highly anticipated.

Over the past 20 years numerous celebrities including comedians Dick Gregory, Shuckey Duckey, Nanette Lee, David A. Arnold, D. Elli$, Joe Torry and Phyllis Yvonne Stickney; singers Eric Benet and Miles Jaye; Public Enemy members Chuck D and Malik Farrakhan; former U.S. Ambassador/Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk; County Commissioner John Wiley Price; Judges Cheryl Lee Shannon, Phyliss Lister Brown, Maryellen Hicks, Thomas G. Jones, Lee Jackson and Cheryl Williams; Pastor Frederick D. Haynes III; former Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins; U.S. Congressman Martin Frost; actors Glynn Turman, Kiki Shepard, Vanessa Bell Calloway and Dawnn Lewis; national

journalists Rene Syler, Brian Custer and Roland Martin; media personalities Sam Putney, Nicole Barrett, Ken Bell, superbowler Skip Murphy, Gary with Da Tea, Newy Scruggs, Clarence Hill, DeDe McGuire, Lynne Haze, LaToya Silmon, and a host of others. have attended this scholarship fundraiser.

Joining Robinson this year are many of the regulars, like multiple tournament winner and former Constable Derick Evans, Mr. Gregory, media personalities Dareia Tolbert, Amanda Fitzpatrick, Steve Nice, Alesia Speeds, Eva Coleman, Guy Rawlings, Vanna Collins, Andrew Whigham, Vincent Hall, Brandon Truttling and DeMond Fernandez; TX State Sen. Royce West, TX State Rep Helen Giddings, former NFL superbowl champion Bethel Johnson, former pro athletes Jabara Johnson and Odie Harris; and a host of others.

It’s a fun event and proceeds go to programs benefiting area youth. In 2014, beneficiaries were the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists scholarship fund, which has received over $50,000 previously, Paul Quinn College, and Sen. Royce West’s Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Internship Program. Additionally, the proceeds from the event have helped take students to conventions in Seattle, Phoenix, Orlando, D.C., Atlanta, Indianapolis, Houston, New Orleans, Las Vegas and Oklahoma. Jeffries Street Learning Center, the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, the Emmett Till Foundation and the African American Museum are just a few of the beneficiaries over the years.

There will also be vendors and a silent auction at the event.

BLACK LIVES MATTER!

The 20 senior girls at Dallas Can Academy’s Oak Cliff campus received an unforgettable experience with makeovers for their senior prom donated by local makeup artists, hair stylists, photographers and more. Each girl had her hair styled, makeup applied and keepsake photographs made from noon to 4 p.m. before their high school prom. Each student chose from a selection of donated jewelry to match her dress and wear to the dance. Volunteers will arrive at the school to offer each graduating senior girl a full makeover and pre-prom pampering experience. Refreshments and music were served to add to the festivities and allow the students to relax and soak in the experience with their classmates and friends. The girls returned home to change into their prom dresses before their big night at Gilley’s Dallas. Nonprofit group, Fit and Faithful Living, sponsored the event. Along with their committee members, Fit and Faithful Living offered to gather professionals to

create a day of glamour and fun for the soon-to-be high school graduates after LaChanda Dupard, executive director of Fit and Faithful Living, recently met one of the senior girls and learned of the need for some pre-prom pampering for the girls attending the senior dance. Senior student Ta’Liyah Edwards met Dupard at a recent school event and described her dream to one day own a salon. Ms. Edwards also explained that most of her classmates couldn’t afford to get their hair and makeup done before their prom. When Dupard heard this she knew she had to do something to provide these young women the opportunity to go to their prom being proud of how they looked. Offering the chance to provide professional primping aligns with her nonprofit’s mission to provide healthy mental balance in individual lives. Local celebrity makeup artist Bridgett LaDawn and a team of volunteers from GlamourRX, Inc. have volunteered to provide the day of glamour for the girls.

"Fit and Faithful Living's mission is to provide healthy mental balance in individual lives, this includes boosting confidence,” said LaChanda Dupard. “The reason we agreed to assist these young women is to promote a spirit of confidence and exposure to professionals that will encourage them! I'm sure this experience will also inspire Ta'Liyah to follow her dream of becoming a salon owner!" Most of the girls have fought obstacles to overcome barriers to earn their high school diplomas and these volunteers wanted to offer them a day of pampering and beauty to boost their confidence for their special dance. Dallas Can students often require support beyond their classroom and this generous “day of beauty” will create lasting memories for their special night. Fit and Faithful Living believes in providing opportunities of change for women and girls to see themselves in a new light.

Dear Alma:

I have a nice majority of friends. However, I hang out mostly with my cousin. I am a year older; she is 18. With this being said, she has friends that are in her group range and vice versa.

All my friends left for college while I stayed my first two years at home to save money. While being full-time at work and school, I still have leisure time.

I find myself isolated because my cousin periodically hangs out with her set of friends more. I believe that’s because they seem to be more on her level and I don’t do half of the things they do.

All this is fine. I just find myself bored on most occasions because I basically don’t have any friends to hang out with. I don’t think going out by yourself is that much fun and finding real friends these days is like finding money on the street. What should I do?

Sincerely, Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

What a fantastic question and I’m so glad you asked. Sweet pea, you are just getting started with life. Your

biggest problem should be time, LOL. Believe me when I say, there’s a world full of activities and adventures for you to explore.

Here’s what I’d suggest. If you run, join a running group. Check out the

site blackgirlsrun.com. Do you sing? Join a church or community choir. Take a cooking or swimming class. Tennis, maybe?

My cousin Eric enjoys graphic design and art, check out comic-

con.org. Cause TBT, the question is: what incites your interest? Once you think of something, search that particular group on Facebook. That’s a good start.

How about Zumba! Girl, you gotta

shake that thaang – show no shame, LOL. Excuse me, I got carried away, back to my Salt & Pepa days.

What I’m saying is: Challenge your comfort zone, expand your horizons. It’s kool to hang out with family and

friends, but take some time to explore other hobbies that may interest you as an individual.

Depending on where you live, volunteer at a hospital, or with animals at a local shelter. I know some senior ci t izens who would love your company. Get out and do something for someone else. There’s more to life than just empty hanging.

You’re mission should be to hang out with a purpose. Pour into yourself a hobby or activity that reaps the benefits of attaining a personal goal. Something that engages you and causes you to lose track of time.

You’ll meet new friends and a variety of great people who share the same interest.

Get started now, today. Write down every activity you’ve ever dreamed of t rying, regardless of locat ion, destination, cost or going at it alone. My advice, young heart – run free, be brave, be bold, you can do it.

Side note: I know you’re almost grown, but always tell your parents where you’re going. Before you know it, you’ll have more on your plate than you can chew. Email me back and let me know how it’s going. I can’t wait to hear!

—Alma

There are several universal principles in life that nobody can refute. The opposite of hot is cold. If you know good, you have to acknowledge evil. For every up, there is a down.

As a matter of fact, the reality of opposites lets us know there should be expectancy in life that forces us to act a certain way.

This affirmative action, of which I speak, allows you to understand and act accordingly, when you know you’re dealing with the truth as opposed to a lie. My example would be a child’s knowledge of Santa Claus.

As the truth becomes known, instantly the child acts with the knowledge that he knows that he knows that he knows. The perspective I am trying to get you to see and react to here is the truth of lost and found.

I submit to you that the subject of this scenario is us, you and me. Are you lost? Are you found? And who determines which answer is correct? Biblically speaking, we lost it all in Eden and had it restored via the cross. In this instance, the it is us.

Can you be found without first being lost? In my case, I know what lost is because once I found Christ, I found me. This may sound somewhat trite to you but finding myself in relationship with God was and is an eye opening experience, the likes of which I would wish on every one of you.

You see, being lost in this world is being vulnerable to it. The world will see to it that you lose yourself to its entanglements, its temptations, its so called pleasures, known as whatever your weaknesses are i.e., greed, ambition, pride, sex, drugs and power. Pick your poison. But know that being lost allows your poison to pick you.

Now when you make an honest effort to find yourself spiritually, like the addict who must first admit his or her addiction, the effort is defined by an acknowledgment that you are

indeed lost and in need of divine guidance to ultimately get this thing called life in order. In the Parable of the Lost Son

that acknowledgement sounds like this. “…Father I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of you hired men.” Luke 15: 18-19. His truth he could not deny. He was lost. He had to become lost. He went looking for

lost and found it. It enabled him to “find” himself and find his way home.

And you know what he found? A waiting father, who had to explain it to his other son who never left, “But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” Luke 15:32.

All I’m trying to say is when you finally get it, there’s only one place to go; home. And in this case home is where God is. The way was prepared by Christ who, like a homing beacon, shows us all how to find ourselves and thus be found. If you’ve ever been truly lost, you know the exhilaration you feel when you finally figure it out and get going in the right direction.

My point is simple. As the kids say, you better recognize! Being lost is not the issue. Having enough sense to know it and do something about it is. I promise you the moment you begin to look for the Lord He will find you. It’s not like God lost you.

It kind of gives new meaning to Lost & Found.

May God bless and keep you always.

SEE YOU AT THE BAYOU BASH!

By Dallas Socialite Amanda Fitzpatrick

Memorial Day Happy Hour kick off event, was hosted by Dallas Cowboys Sports Reporter Clarence Hill Jr, CBS Sports Anchor Guy Rawlings, and me, Media Personality Amanda Fitzpatrick Hundreds came out to show their support for a worthy cause. When Clarence Hill Jr. and DJ Gumbo asked myself and CBS Sports Anchor Guy Rawlings to co-host the Memorial Day Happy Hour Charity at aLOFT XYZ bar I couldn't pass it up! The event was meant to have fun but also raise awareness about Veterans in need. They decided to bring together dozens of people to donate shoes for the Dallas Veterans Resource Center. Many purchased shoes and donated the to the cause. Others brought gently worn shoes, and/or cash donations. The event collected a hundred pairs of shoes, and will go to the men and women veterans and their families.

three institutions, a focusgroup of sorts dished ideasand findings on the surveysthat have told the story of theresidents of South Dallas.“We are measuring con-

ditions that may vary fromstreet to street,” said Dr.

Timothy Bray, director ofthe Institute of UrbanPolicy Research. He helps

oversee the The FieldResearch Team whichunderwent 80 hours of

training in administeringthe anonymous surveys.“Over three to four yearsthere are changes in condi-tions and we want to knowhow it affects the area.”

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

Bailey HutchisonGrade: C

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

theadminis-

tration willadopt the productive,

responsible approach to ournation’s challenges thatAmericansdeserve.”(The office of John Cornyn of

PROPOSITIONS

1 AND 2

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

Leppert. But what doesvoting “no” and voting“yes” mean?It is important to

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.
