Ada L. Williams was recognized by the Dallas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. after recently being named Parliamentarian Emeritus for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Her early beginnings were in Waxahachie, Texas and Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Williams said her experiences as a young African-American in Texas shaped her

development and her perception of the world. She overcame many struggles to reach high positions within Dallas Independent School District and the upper echelons of the National Association of Parliamentarians.

Ask Pam12

I’ve known Mrs. Ada L. Williams for three decades and I am so proud to call her my sorority sister and friend.

She has served Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., other organizations, Dallas Independent School District, just to name a few. The knowledge she imparts to organizations on how to run their meetings more effectively is invaluable and so very necessary.

But along with the parliamentary procedures, she brings more with her unassuming and inspiring demeanor as she shares tips on being more productive; while also being respectful and caring.

When people talk about sororities and when I think about ideal Delta women, I always include her on my list because she is the epitome of womanhood, sisterhood and all things noble.

Ada Williams is gracious and loving. She is kind and generous. She is someone who leads by example.

I have to give a shout-out to another sorority sister, Mythe Kirven, who made the suggestion for Mrs. Williams to receive the distinction of Parliamentarian Emeritus for Delta Sigma Theta. It was a selfless act and I know greatly appreciated.

When looking for a role model, Ada L. Williams is an ideal mentor and example.

Big Congrats to Mrs. Ada L.

Excitement erupts when Grambling State and Prairie View A&M collide

The 2015 football clash will k ick o f f a t 4 :00 p .m. on Saturday, Sept. 26 in the Cotton Bowl at Fair Park. Gates open at 3:00 p.m.

The Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic is always a vibrant, dramatic contest – between the football teams and the march ing bands o f Grambling State University of Louisiana and Prairie View A&M University of Texas.

The c l a s s i c showdown began in the 1940s and has been at Fair Park annually since the 1980s. It is considered the largest social event of the year for both schools, attracting some 65,000 fans to Dallas.

The Southwest Airlines State Fair Classic is filled with great football for four quarters and a stunning battle of the bands during halftime.

Just as exciting to watch is the halftime extravaganza, termed a battle of the bands showdown.

The Grambl ing Sta te Marching Band and the Prairie View A&M Marching Storm both merge j aw-dropping precision and dynamic dance moves. The result – a flashy but fantastic halftime like no other you have ever seen.

Coach Broderick Fobbs comes to Grambling State University with a wealth of experience as a coach and understands the demands the student-athletes have on and off the field.

After a one year s t int serving as the wide receivers coach with Southern Mississippi in 2012, Fobbs returned to McNeese State University for the 2013 for a sixth overall season as a member of the McNeese coaching staff as the tight ends coach.

Prior to that, Fobbs served as co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach with McNeese. During that time, he mentored players Quinten Lawrence, who was drafted and played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins, and Steven Whitehead, to all-star status.

As a high school player at Carroll High School in Monroe, he earned all-state and all-district honors in football and

baseball, he played in the state baseball and football all-star games and earned a scholarship to Grambling State University as a running back.

Under legendary GSU head football coach Eddie Robinson, Fobbs was an honors student and served as a two-time team captain and honor roll student for the Tigers. He led the Southwester n Ath le t ic Conference in yards per carry of 7.1 one season. He gained more than 1,000 yards during his college football career.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from the university in 1997.

Fobbs had a successful stay a s an a s s i s tant coach a t Northwestern State, where he mentored and recruited two of the most productive receivers in Northwestern State history, Derrick Doyle and Toby Zeigler, who ranked No. 1 and No. 2 at the school in receptions, respec-tively. He spent the 2002-2006 seasons in Natchitoches.

During his stay at NSU, Fobbs served an NFL Minority Internship with the Buffalo Bills in 2005 and also has coached the Arena League II Lafayette, La., franchise. He also worked a s an o f fens ive g raduate assistant at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette during the 2000-01 season.

Recently in the nation’s capital during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference, my colleagues and I met with some of the finest minds in the fields that comprise the “global language” of the future: science, technology, engineering and math, colloquially referred to as STEM.

During the Annual Legislative Conference, I served as the honorary host of the 23rd Annual Science & Technology Braintrust. The Braintrust centered on the theme of “Pushing the Limits: The Future of Consumer Electronics & the Journey to Mars and Beyond.”

Founded more than two decades ago under my leadership, the Braintrust, as it has for many years, brought together STEM professionals, educators, entrepreneurs, and students from around the country. One of the Braintrust’s major objectives was to create a dialogue and share strategies to broaden participation in the sciences among minority students, and to inspire them to pursue STEM-based careers. Historically, the Braintrust has brought together professionals, community leaders and mentors to achieve this very important goal.

During the course of the Legislative Conference some of the best minds in consumer electronics, commercial space travel and space exploration discussed topics such as increasing diversity in tech companies, the effects of climate change, dismantling the school to prison pipeline, women in business, opportunities in cyber-security, closing the skills gap and many others.

During the remainder of this year and the coming year, I will continue

to share with residents of North Texas the dynamic information that came out of the Legislative Conference.

I will continue to work educators, policy experts and our corporate partners to identify resources to supplement science discovery and exploration in our local classrooms. Information is powerful, and it is crucial to our

collective growth and development.

At the close of conference, I walked away even more committed to expanding STEM outreach in minority communities, and I am looking forward to continuing to work with the constituents of District 30 to ensure that we are preparing our students with the skills

necessary to compete in a global economy that is driven by technology, science and research.

"Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. We have to keep in mind at all times that we are not fighting for separation. We are fighting for recognition as free humans in this society."

As it is always my joy to do, I took a ride over to see the beloved Thomas, my mother’s brother. I just wanted to ask my old Uncle Tom what he thought about Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson, and his chances of winning the nomination. I wanted to know if Uncle Ben had a real place in the Republican Party o r i s h e j u s t a n o t h e r placeholder like 2011’s Herman Cane.

My mother’s brother was excited to see me and said; “Son you can take it from your good old Uncle Tom, I know an Uncle Tom when I see one. Ben Carson is a smart Negro, but no better than any of the rest they've ever had. The Republicans will never let a Negro be their only hope of getting back in the White House. These folks won’t wager on nothing Black. They wouldn’t bet on a B l a c k h o r s e i n t h e Kentucky Derby if this was 1973 and his name was Secretariat.”

Uncle Tom continued on...

(You know how Toms love to talk!) "If Uncle Ben is wise he would do what he can to sell more copies of that book and hit the speaking circuit. I feel sorry for him because there’s no sadder feeling than when you realize White folks ain’t got no mo’ use fa ya.”

Well what about the rest of the candidates, I urged. It’s still more than a dozen of them. ‘Well,” said Tom, “Let’s start by using logic to

eliminate those who don’t have a chance. The GOP is still irrationally racist and zealously xenophobic, which says to me that the eventual nominee will be White and male. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio are good for show, but that Bobby Jindal out of Louisiana is darker than me. Three down, 13 to go.”

What about a woman, I persisted; does the woman who killed a company and 50,000 jobs have a chance?

“Glad you asked,” mused Uncle Tom. There have been very few times w h e n D o n a l d T r u m p publicly said he was sorry, but he didn’t have a damn thing to apologize about when he cal led Carla Fiorina ‘ugly.’ She is ugly and the damn shame of it all is that looks, especially when it comes to women, means way too much to Americans. Hell, JFK was

Catholic in 1960, but he and his wife were so damn attractive that the nation gave him a pass.”

Uncle Tom had lots more to say, but as I said from the outset, I just wanted his opinion on Dr. Ben Carson. So let me tell you what I personally think of Uncle Ben.

For a man who first broke on the scene as a Black History maker and acclaimed example for the race, Ben

Carson has broken a lot of hearts. There are two types of Negroes that are dangerous to Black America; the bought Negro and an outright Uncle Tom. And sadly, Uncle Ben c a r r i e s t h e D N A a n d proclivities of both.

Many of us wanted to take Uncle Ben seriously. The fact that he is a Republican does not make him an instant sellout with Black folks. But w h e n h e m a d e h i s breakthrough by pandering and paralleling Obamacare to slavery, his true colors came out.

Recently, Uncle Ben’s repeated sentiments that Muslims were not fit for the Oval office, sealed the deal. So was he saying any non-Christian wasn’t? What about a Jewish brother or sister? Nobody asked him. Uncle B e n k n o w s i t ’s o k t o disparage Muslims because they are seen as inferior or innately evil just as most non-Whites are. But nobody in politics can afford to even remotely offend the Jewish community. Not even Donald Trump and he’s a self-sustaining pimp.

Uncle Ben may seem l ike a courageous and outspoken Negro to his followers, but he’s just another Uncle Tom posing as their favorite Uncle Ben.

Spiritually Speaking

Move. It's God's Turn, Not Yours.Spiritually Speaking…..

Is it really possible to put your life in the hands of the Lord? To some modest extent I have experienced the effect of trying to do just that. I can’t say how successful I’ve been but, I ask the question of you because I feel obligated to share the exhilaration. Exhilaration may be a poor choice of words, but it comes close to describing the emotion associated with an honest effort. And, honest effort is again why I ask the question. Is it possible for you to really get inside of what putting your life in the hands of God really means? I can only share with you what I think.

The obstacles in the way of making an honest effort to embrace and step to God are at times huge and obvious. At other times they are so subtle they’re practically indiscernible. For example, pride can get in the way because pride has no place in the relationship between you and God.

Then the truth be told, pride has no place in your relationships with your fellow man either. To pride, you can always add envy, vanity, greed, lust, selfishness and bitterness just to name a few more impediments to an honest attempt to let God order your steps in His Word. In sports they say it’s not whether you fall or fail, it’s what you do after you fall and fail, because you’re definitely going to do both. Time and again we fall. Time and again we fail. It’s part of the reality of life; also necessary parts of the Christian experience.

The question always has been, what do you do next? Is it possible in the context of your reality to get up dust yourself off and try again to put your life in God’s hands? Many of us, including me, especially me, want to hold on to our own abilities to solve our own problems, cure our own ills (sinful natures) and figure our way out of impossible circumstances by ourselves. We routinely pass judgment, think and act as if we’re better than others and give God no credit for the many blessings we do have.

The positives (of life) are due to our own ingenuity and the negatives are blamed on anybody else but us. Now the question is can you make the effort? Can you let go and let God. Submit first and then see what God has to say about your situation. Without this submission, I don’t think any of us is in a position to first hear and then listen to the Word of God.

Y’all know I believe Satan shouts and God whispers. If you’ve ever been whispered to when you think the person speaking is saying something important, then you know your capacity to shut the world up and out. You can be anywhere and hear a whisper, just like a parent who can hear their child’s voice in a sea of young faces on a crowded playground. I believe if we put forth the effort, we can

hear God tell us how to give our lives to Him. There is a singularity to hearing God’s Word. He is specific in what He says to you as opposed to what He says to me. That singularity becomes a plurality as we

begin to understand His message, if not His words.

They are intended to have the same effect on each of us. It’s like an optical illusion. Once you finally see it, you can’t from that point on, not see it.

Once you get someone else to see it, he or she can’t-not recognize it from that point on either. It is, well, exhilarating.

Failure is then only a byproduct of lack of effort. But the saved make the sincere effort. It’s not always successful. But it’s always there. The key is to build upon the successes of putting things in the hands of God is take it one success at a time.

Do not, I repeat do not dwell on the failures one failure at a time. Therein lies the answer to my original question. You can do it and God expects it to be done one step, one day and one situation at a time.

“So then dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation….”2 Peter 3:14-15.

May God bless and keep you always.

Question:I am 22 years old and will be losing my health coverage this month. My mother was forced to drop me off her plan on her job because of

the high cost. I’m in school full-time and work part-time. I still have another year of school to go and afterwards I’ll get full-time employment. I don’t want to go without health coverage but can’t afford it; what can I do? Answer:You still have several options. With you losing coverage in a qualified health plan, this is considered a life changing event and so it gives you a special enrollment period on the Federal Marketplace Exchange (Texas). To be eligible for a premium tax credit (PTC) and use it to lower your monthly premium, your income would need to fall within certain levels based on household size per the healthcare.gov website. In addition, you would have to agree to file a Federal Income tax return for this year. I know you mentioned you work part-time and so you may not be eligible for at PTC. However, you can still select any eligible plan on the Exchange without trying to use a PTC; this means you’ll agree to pay the full stated premium. There are other types of individual health policies available that may fit within your budget. I recommend you sitting down with a licensed health agent to discuss all possible options based on your unique situation.

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

Bailey HutchisonGrade: C

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

theadminis-

tration willadopt the productive,

responsible approach to ournation’s challenges thatAmericansdeserve.”(The office of John Cornyn of

PROPOSITIONS

1 AND 2

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

Leppert. But what doesvoting “no” and voting“yes” mean?It is important to

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.
