Life Happens8 Celebrating

Life...During this time of year we often reflect on those who have transitioned. As I sat listening to Rev. Michael Bowie of St. Luke “Community” United Methodist Church, at the

celebration of life for my old friend Wallace Faggett’s mother, Mrs. Eula Faggett, he shared something personal, and I realized that we all had something in common: this would be the first Christmas/Kwanzaa holiday season that we each wouldn’t share with our mothers.

In the past year, we had all sat through similar celebrations and they aren’t easy. If you are fortunate, as I was and clearly as Wallace was as he talked about his mother; we have some wonderful memories to focus on when we start to pick up the phone to call her or have a thought about something we need to tell her, only to realize she’s not here -- but really she is!

Rather than dwell on sad thoughts, I began to reflect on some of the many holidays we shared. My mother loved to give gifts. She derived so much pleasure from giving -- and yes, she was that friend who would bake fruitcakes for her friends-- since the 1970s, that I can recall. She loved the song, “Please Come Home for Christmas.”

I also thought about the many other people who I know who are also members of this “club.” It was a club I never wanted to join and each day I have to face the realization. This year began with me hearing that Flavor Flav received word that his mother had died on New Year’s Eve. He and I had

talked the day before while he and the rest of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame rap group Public Enemy was in Dallas for a show. And there are so many other deaths I heard of this year, which I received with a heavy heart. At Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, I said a quick prayer for Wallace and his family. I promised myself that when I talked to him I wouldn’t say, “she’s in a better place,” “time will heal all wounds,” “this too shall pass,” or, you get the picture. I wonder if folks who make those statements realize that they are sometimes so close to a beatdown-- that their words are not comforting. For me, those words didn’t ease the pain or feeling of loss as I try to switch thoughts to a positive space, away from the emptiness that occurs when thinking of the woman who pushed me out into the world and prayed for my safety because looking back, there had to be some serious praying going on at times. All kind of reports are released about this being a depressing time of year and how you can cope. That’s when I thought about one of my mentees, Ashley Clark Stewart, who this year gave birth to a handsome baby boy, Charles III, and I smiled.

By Jazelle Hunt NNPA Washington Correspondent

WASHINGTON (NNPA) – On Saturday, thousands of Americans across the country registered their objection to police officers not being held accountable after killing unarmed citizens, many of them Blacks, by mounting massive demonstrations and rallies, the main one held here in the nation’s capital.

Organized by major civil rights organizations, the goal of the protest was to demand federal intervention in state prosecutorial systems that have failed to indict anyone in the police killings of victims such as Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Aiyana Stanley-Jones, and Pearlie Golden.

“We must have this nation deal with the fact that just like 50 years ago, the states have taken a position to rob the human rights and civil rights of citizens with states rights-protected laws,” said Al Sharpton, the rally’s chief organizer.

The demands by Sharpton included: expanding the powers for the Justice Department to investigate state prosecution procedures; national legislation to lower the threshold for grand jury indictments of police officers; and independent special prosecutors to examine potential cases of police brutality or misconduct.

The march drew a multiracial, intergenerational sea of sign-toting citizens from all over the nation. Wanda Sharif, from Beaumont, Texas, had already been in Washington to help care for her grandchild, but extended her visit to attend the march.

The grandmother of seven recalled marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at 11 years old, and attending all-White schools until enrolling at Spelman College in Atlanta.

“I’ve been doing this for three generations. I have to be here to document for my grandchildren, so they know I was here,” she says. “It’s important that everybody sees – not just America, but the whole world should see that we have not made all the progress and accomplished all that we thought we did. More and more eyes are opening. We’re still fighting for the same things we were fighting for in the ‘60s.”

Washington D.C. residents Albert and Andrea Elliott brought their 12-year-old grandson, Jeremiah, to use the march as a teachable moment. “I brought my grandson to his first march so he understands that what he is doing is right. We’re teaching him solidarity…and that he can speak up and be nonviolent without being afraid,” she says. “We as a people have to stick together and be more involved…. We have to go to the source, where the laws are made, to put our foot on their necks.”

As they planned their attendance, Jeremiah asked about previous civil rights demonstrations, police violence, and tear gas. “It’s not fair to kill Black people because you have the power and authority to do stuff like this that we can’t,” he says of his personal reasons for attending. “I don’t think it’s fair to kill Black people for no reason.”

University of Maryland students and Divine Nine fraternity members Marcus Davis, Justin Ferguson, and Akiel Pyant carried a “Black Lives Matter” banner.

“I’m here because I’m concerned about the future. If our grandparents went through this, and we’re going through this, Lord only knows what my grandchildren will go through,” says Davis, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

The light police presence blocked traffic and generally stayed out of the way as the loud but peaceful processional traveled six blocks to the main stage at the foot of the Capitol’s front lawn. Both national and international media were present, as well as union organizations, Black Greek letter organizations, civic and grassroots organizations, student groups, and families. Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ and ‘What’s Happening

Brother’ met the marchers as they arrived at the main stage, where media trucks, government Suburbans, and a stilted press box overflowing with photographers flanked the crowds.

With the Capitol as a backdrop, the main stage featured a lineup of speakers including Representative Al Green (D-Texas), Newark, N.J. Mayor, Ras Baraka, Howard University Student Association President, Leighton Watson, and more.

Activist and radio host, Joe “The Black Eagle” Madison served as master of ceremonies. The lineup also featured the unexpected addition of a young contingent of Ferguson, Mo. protesters. At the gathering point before the march, where a different set of speakers addressed the crowd, about 15 members of the ad-hoc D.C. Ferguson group occupied the stage area, using chants and bullhorns to call attention to the fact that Ferguson protesters had not been invited as partners.

The group has been demonstrating since August, and was responsible for shutting down I-395 in protest last month. Two DC Ferguson members and one Ferguson native and protester bypassed security and took to the stage. Security attempted to remove them without force.

As the NAN speaker at the podium tried to speak over the commotion with calls for “respect for one another” and unity, Erika Totten, one of the D.C. Ferguson members onstage, used a bullhorn to say, “They have been out there for more than 100 days.” After several minutes of heated exchange onstage between the contingent and several National Action Network organizers,

the organizers allowed Totten to speak at the podium.

She spoke very briefly then passed the microphone to St. Louis native and Ferguson protester, Johnetta Elzie. “I’ve been in Ferguson for 127 days. I got shot one time with a rubber bullet standing on my neighborhood street. I’ve been tear gassed nine times in a neighborhood where I pay taxes, because I decided to exercise my First Amendment rights and go protest for the death of Mike Brown,” Elzie said. “This movement was started by the young people. We started this. It should be young people all over this stage.” Afterward, an NAN representative approached the group and spoke to Totten about building an alliance. At the main stage after the march, Rep. Green, Madison, and Sharpton addressed the discord between youth and grassroots actions, and those organized by civil rights leaders. “We who are a little older, a little grayer, are proud of the young people speaking out,” said Madison, referring to youth protesters as young John Lewises and Fannie Lou Hamer, two civil rights legends.

Green echoed similar statements, adding that elders were not here to lead, but to “get out of the way.” Sharpton added, “We don’t all agree with each other. We don’t all have the same tactics. But we all have the same goal, and that is equal protection under the law. This is not a Black march, or a White march…it is an American march for the rights of all American people.”

The Washington march was also the only one attended by the families of well-known unarmed Black male victims: Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Akai Gurley, Tamir Rice, John Crawford III, Lavar Jones, Cory Ball Jr., Trayvon Martin, and Amadou Diallo.

All of the families were given time to speak. “We’ve been here so many times. I know in 2000, when the four White officers were acquitted of killing my son, of all charges, I thought the world was ending,” said Kadiatou Diallo. Her unarmed son Amadou Diallo was shot 41 times by four New York Police Department officers in 1999.

“…We said stop police brutality then. And today, 16 years later, we’re here demanding the same thing.”

Prescription drug abuse has become a major public health issue in our country.

According to Trust for America, a Washington, D.C. based research organization, deaths in America related to drug abuse are greater than those that result from the use of illegal substances such as heroin and cocaine combined.

The abuse of prescription drugs results in a loss of $53 billion annually in medical costs, lost productivity and criminal justice costs, according to a report by Trust for America.

The highly-regarded group states that only one of ten Americans with a drug abuse problem receives any type of treatment for their illness.

Deaths from the use of prescribed drugs have risen significantly during the past twenty years, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Most of these deaths were the result of the misuse of substances that were prescribed by licensed health professionals.

Males were 60 percent more likely to die from the use of prescription drugs than women, according to data from the CDC. People between the ages of 45 and 50 experienced a higher death rate than any other age group, the data stated.

In one of its reports, the agency states that in 2012, 53 percent of all drug overdose deaths in our country were caused by drugs that were prescribed legally.

A major problem, according to many health officials, is the over-

prescription and use of painkillers that contain potentially addictive narcotics. A growing number of medical experts believe that such pain killers should not be available to patients because of their potential for abuse. Officials at the U.S. Drug

Enforcement Administration in Dallas describe the abuse of prescription drugs as a “major concern.” The federal officials are alarmed at the increase in the number of deaths caused by prescription drugs.

Throughout our state and our country, health care experts and patient advocate groups have demanded that doctors become

more vigilant in prescribing pain relievers, suggesting that they not prescribe potentially addictive medications.

States such as Texas have gotten involved in the battle against addictive drugs and their overuse.

The state has an online drug monitoring program that allows doctors and pharmacists to view the drug histories of their patients. The program has helped to curve some abuse.

Many of us know people who are taking prescription drugs that are potentially addictive. In our homes and in our neighborhoods we must increase awareness regarding the harm that can be caused by the improper use of these substances.

We owe this much to those that are close to us, and to others who are members of our larger communities.

The holidays are here, which means that magical elves will bring goodies and unhealthy treats to the office. Cookies, candy, fresh-baked goods, chocolate, candy canes, and everything in-between. How do you resist temptation and not eat what you see in the break room when it’s there every day from now until New Year’s Eve? Follow these 10 simple tips to get through the holidays and still "t into your pants on New Year’s Day.

Move the goodies out of your line of vision. Whatever is in your line of vision, you will be more tempted to eat. Depending on your work situation and where your desk is located, can you move the candy bowl out of sight? Or at least out of arm’s length? Rather than the latest gift basket sitting front and center on the conference room table, can it be put in the refrigerator or behind a closed cupboard? Ask your coworkers and see what makes sense. Chances are they don’t want to overindulge either and will appreciate someone taking action. Don’t skip meals. When a person’s blood sugar drops, sweets and other goodies look the most tempting. The body is looking for quick energy in the form of sugar because it can process it the fastest. Low blood sugar usually happens if a person skips meals or waits too long between meals to eat. If you

make a point to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and healthy snacks in-between, then you’ll be able to maintain more constant blood sugar levels and you won’t be as tempted by the sweets.

Bring healthy snacks to work. Being prepared is everything when it comes to maintaining your waistline. The easiest way to be prepared at the office is to have healthy snacks on hand! Aim for unsalted or raw nuts, fruit, hummus and veggies, healthy protein bars, string cheese, or even a sliced apple with a tablespoon of organic peanut butter or almond butter. Yum!

Drink water before you head to the cookie table. Sometimes if a person feels hungry, they’re actually thirsty. If the cookies are calling your name, drink a glass of water "rst and see how you feel. If afterwards they’re still calling your name, have just ½ or 1 cookie to get the craving out of the way and call it a day.

Brush your teeth. Sometimes we crave something just to change the taste in our mouth. Bring a toothbrush and toothpaste to work and keep in in your purse or in your desk drawer. Brush your teeth after lunch or whenever you feel you need a little refresher, and

you’ll crave less unhealthy treats. Plus, who wants to put sugary food on freshly cleaned teeth?

If you need to give in to a craving, just have one. We all have cravings and sometimes those cravings mean something. For example, cravings for sweets can sometimes be because a person didn’t get enough sleep, they haven’t eaten enough protein, or they’ve waited too long in-between meals. Sometimes we crave something because of the nostalgia of it. For me, it’s eating peanut butter blossoms at Christmastime as a kid with the Hershey’s kiss in the center.

If you are craving a holiday treat, "rst take a moment to think of why? Are you truly hungry? Or did you skip lunch, so the brownies in the conference room seem extra tempting? Then if you are still craving it, have just one to satisfy the craving. Usually the 2nd or 3rd brownie, cookie or piece of candy isn’t nearly as satisfying as the "rst one, so just stick to one and leave the rest alone.

Give food away. Just because goodie baskets show up at the office doesn’t mean they need to stay there. Walk around to the coworkers and see if anyone would like to take some food home with them!

Count it. One of the easiest ways to maintain your waistline during the holidays is to track what you eat. There are many apps now available, or you can just use a good ol’ pen and a piece of paper. If you write down everything you eat or drink and see that you have room in your calorie range for a little treat, then have it and enjoy it! Keep up your exercise routine. Burning more calories than you eat is essential to keep a healthy waistline. Aim to "t in 30 minutes of exercise a day, even if it’s broken up into 15 minute increments. Also, with exercise, it’s important to do what you enjoy! That’s the best way you’ll stick to it. So, decide if you like to walk by yourself, with a buddy, take a class, workout at home, or use an exercise DVD.

Have an accountability partner. An accountability partner could be in the form of an app that helps you track your food an exercise, a family or friend, or even a health coach, nutritionist or personal trainer. If you have someone or something to report to, you are less likely to indulge.

Justine SanFilippo is a nutritionist, a certi!ed health coach and personal trainer, and author of the book Lose Your Inches Without Losing Your Mind! – 10 Simple Weeks to a Slimmer Waistline and a Healthier You. In MemoriamEula Mae Caldwell

Faggett

November 1, 1924 - December 11, 2014

Eula Mae (Caldwell) Faggett was born to Lafayette and Evelyn Caldwell in Rodessa, Louisiana on November 1, 1924. She was the first born of five: William, Cleve, Ernestine and Fredonia.

Eula attended public school in Marshall, TX and graduated from the Hurd Beauty College in Marshall, and was the proud owner of two hair salons.

She met and married Edison Faggett and to this union four children were born: Phyllis, Willie, Wallace and Bervin.

Eula had a passion for helping those in need. It was only fitting that she pursued a career in nursing, along with her mother, sister and one of her brothers. After moving to Dallas, she became a private duty nurse.

While in Marshall, she attended Mt. Zion Spiritual Church. After settling in Dallas, she attended various churches and was a devoted member of Ervay Cedar Baptist Church. She later united with Greater Mt. Sinai, where she served as President of the Women’s Auxiliary Mission for over 20 years and prepared meals in the church kitchen.

Eula is preceded in death by her parents, Lafayette and Evelyn Caldwell -- two brothers, William and Cleve, and three children Phyllis Holmes, Willie and Bervin Faggett.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her son Wallace (Edna), Sisters Ernestine and Fredonia; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; special friends Mrs. Cynthia Harris, Mrs. Marjorie Jones, Mrs. Lettie McCullough, Mrs. Marie Blair, Adjoaidaisa “Isha” Hall, Nauzarus Miller, Todd Wordlaw (Little Man) and a host of relatives and friends.

Hol iday par t ie s , sounds o f merr y music, festive foods and decorated homes a re a we lcome scene dur ing the Christmas season, but for many, it can be a stark reality of the physical absence of a loved one due to death.

Statistics reveal that from Thanksgiving to New Years, the rate of suicide, homicide and other types of deaths peak to its’ highest.

It is the time of year where those who are spending their first holidays without that special loved one struggle the most.

The moment of comfor t and consolation for families should not stop at the s i te o f the interment, but there are stages and phases to grief, and the holiday season is a significant phase.

Over the 100 years of Black and Cla rk funera l home taking care of families with excellence, we know a little something about grief.

We would like to recommend some Holiday Grief Nuggets that can help you and your family continue to focus on the celebration of your loved one’s life, even during this difficult holiday season.

Keep the party going. As hard as it may be, keep the party going by remembering the special nuisances and uniqueness of the loved one who is physically not present this Holiday Season.

This is the time to create new memories so that the legacy of life lives on. Plan a special event where everyone brings a picture and tells their favorite story about them.

Keep your Fa i th s t rong . Wri te a spec ia l p rayer acknowledging their legacy while having a cand le l i ght ing ceremony.

As a family, make a decision to worship

together on a certain day. This is great way to keep children involved and understanding that Faith is an important part to the grieving process.

Keep the Legacy Alive.  It is important to get input from family and friends so that e ver yone wi l l fee l inc luded in celebrations.

I n v o l v e Children in ser-v ice oppor-tun i t ie s that their loved one wa s or may ha ve been p a s s i o n a t e about.

In l i eu o f shopping for gifts, consider g iv ing legacy gifts to others.

Establish legacy traditions like

se r v ing a t a homeless shelter, or donating coats to needy children and families in the name of your loved ones or by donating to another grieving family who may be in the beginning of the grief cycle.

This is also a very healthy way for children to learn to live a life of service while remaining connected to the legacy of their loved one.

At the end of the day, holidays can hurt – but if looked at from a perspective of faith, you will make it through.

up via Twitter, suggesting BudStraps as “an alternative to tangling headphones.” CW TV a$liate WCCB reviewed BudStraps on its morning show, saying that it works “…like croakies except for your earbuds,” “it’s comfortable”, and “if they fall out, they’re just right there [around your neck]”.

Even ABC TV star Josh Malina (Scandal, West Wing) tweeted to his 150k fans on Monday that “These things work great” after personally testing BudStraps. And that’s not all! Even Cycling’s top blog for new product reviews, BikeRumor.com, wrote a #attering review of BudStraps, and on Tuesday, November 25th, NBC’s Universal Sports will be giving 50 beanies to promote the campaign. Dallas, TX - More than a dozen law-enforcement agencies and organizations across the Dal las/Fort Worth metroplex demonstrated their support for body-camera legislation in Texas.

During a press conference Wednesday a t Da l l a s Po l ice headquarters, State Senator Royce West detailed Senate Bill 158 that he authored. It provides grants to fund Texas l aw-enforcement agencies to purchase body-worn cameras. The comprehensive bill requires law-enforcement agencies to adopt a policy for the use of the cameras with training guidelines on when an officer should activate or discontinue a recording as well as the storage of the video.

"I think the biggest issue is that of the actual policy. Then there are concerns related to privacy," explained Senator West. "SB158 protects the privacy rights of victims and witnesses of crimes. The bi l l has provis ions that address the preservation of video evidence and also looks to protect

the rights of police officers. I want to put together a statewide task force wi th l aw-enforcement officers, civil-rights representatives and the community so we can develop a strong policy."

More than a dozen l aw-enforcement representatives joined Senator West a t the pres s conference showing support for the body-camera bill. The Dallas Police Department has been field-testing body cameras and plans to order approximately 200 body cameras next year. "The Dallas Police Department supports the legislation. The technology is a great tool and a huge benefit to the public and the officer," said Dallas Police Chief David Brown. "The camera is not a panacea, but another tool. It is just as important for the police department to build trust through a relationship with the community."

The DeSoto Po l i ce Department has been using body cams since 2011, more than three years. "We have had great success

with them," said DeSoto Police Chief Joseph Costa. "It limits frivolous complaints and it helps us to do our job better. We are ready to help any agency that needs assistance on how to deploy the use of the cameras."

Senator West estimated that it would cost between $50 to $70 million dollars to provide grants for body-mounted cameras across the state. Noting that President Barack Obama wants the federal government to assist with the cost of body-mounted cameras West said, "My goal is to get multiple funding sources to pay for the cameras; federal, state and local. Everyone has to have skin in the game."

In 2001, West introduced Senate Bill 1074 that provided $18.5 million in state funding to purchase 7,550 in-car/dashboard cameras for patrol cars across Texas . "Those cameras have reduced the number of frivolous complaints against police officers and helped to resolve disputes

both in and out of courtrooms. And if a complaint does not wind up becoming a lawsuit, it also saves cities money." added West.

Standing in support of the bill at the press conference were Lancaster Police Chief Cheryl Wilson, Dallas County Sheriff 's Department Chief Deputy Marian Brown, Ar l ington Po l i ce Department Deputy Chief Os Flores, Cedar Hill Assistant Police Chief Rodney Thompson, Dallas Police Association President-Senior Corporal Ron Pinkston, Sgt. Cletus Judge with the Black Police Association, Sergeant David Guerra with the National Latino Peace Officers Association-Dallas Chapter, Patricia San Martino with the Nat iona l Lat ino Law Enforcement Organ izat ion , Deputy John White with the Dallas County Peace Officers Association, and Constable Roy H. Williams, Jr. -Dallas County Pct. 4.

PAGE 20 ! ! ! I MESSENGER

We must mentor our children. It really does take a village!

In the spirit of the times, I was wondering about what it really means to have a personal relationship with God, the operative word being personal. I’m learning that as one starts his or her journey towards the Almighty, it becomes more and more obvious that when you get to the inevitable fork in the road, which path you take is a matter of choice, not circumstance, not fate and certainly not an accident.

Once you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, what’s in your heart takes priority over what’s in your mind and certainly what comes out of your mouth! When faith takes over, the claim of ignorance as defense for unholy actions, unholy practices and hypocritical conduct fall by the wayside. The proof is in the heart.

Like the child who responds in silence to the parent, who states, “I know you know the difference between right and wrong, or, I know you know, you weren’t raised that way,” the silent child knows in his or her heart that their parent is correct.

No answer is the answer. And I believe so it is with God. No matter the situation or the circumstance, when you acknowledge God, you can no longer use the excuses that you didn’t know, or you didn’t have control or, well, after all it was an accident.

This is God we’re talking about and it’s your heart He’s talking to. You can deny it if you want to but no answer is an answer and no decision is a decision. Faith in the face of temptation does not automatically mean we’ll always make the right choices or decisions.

As a matter of fact, more often than not, we’ll let God down as well as ourselves. A true understanding of faith however, will not allow you to stay down. Through faith and a personal relationship with God, each of us can get up and try again. We can even go back to that fork in the road and make that right when we previously made the wrong left. It’s called try again. Personal relationships allow you to make mistakes and realize that relationship lets others know, what you did is real.

You did it. You said it. But what your heart says or meant, is understood. You don’t get a pass. But you do get the benefit of the doubt.

You see this personal relationship makes you aware somehow of the distance between you and God, much like the distance between you and a loved one. Time and distance are supposed to make the heart grow fonder. In this case, time and distance bring no peace and no satisfaction. For a true believer, one recognizes if God ain’t happy, you ain’t happy.

Until you know the source of this angst and this anxiety, the choices you make will continue to be wrong. When you submit to the will of God, I promise you’ll begin to see the path that God has laid out for you. Hence, when you choose incorrectly, it’ll become obvious that you’re headed in the wrong direction. You’ll understand God hasn’t moved. You have.

“ B l e s s e d a r e t h e y w h o s e transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose

sin the Lord will never counts against him.” Romans 4:7-8. Is this possible? I understand it is if I can just get to, “…circumcision of the heart by the (Holy) Spirit…” Romans 2:29. All things are possible to those who love the Lord. Again, as the child who knows he or she has disappointed a loving parent, there is no joy until the relationship is again put back in balance. Or, the couple who realizes anger and argument cannot last forever and must be resolved in order to find conjugal peace.

Walk with God. Better yet simply attempt to walk with God and trust me, you’ll know when you’re out of step. You’ll feel it. It will make you stop and think. You will not have peace and we all know what it does to you when you don’t have peace where and with whom it counts the most.

However, being in right relationship allows you to make the first move. It’s called humility in the face of being right and wrong. I guess what I’m saying is when you know you’re wrong, if you take the first step by reaching out your hand for forgiveness, God will show you He’s still there. In fact, He was there before you ever moved your hand.

May God bless and keep you forever.

I have been best friends with the same person for the past 10 years. We always got along and never got into any major arguments. About 8 months ago we started working in the same office. Once we started working together, we hung out a lot more (carpooling to work, happy hours after work, lunch together during work). But recently (about a month ago) we got into a little argument and it got to the point where we worked together for two days and did not even talk to each other, which is completely out of character for both of us. We usually call/text and hang out every day, even after spending 8 hours at work together! LOL

About 2 days after our argument I decided to be the bigger person and hash everything out. I figured our friendship was way more important than a little argument. Things started to get back to normal but I also noticed that there was a different vibe between us. I had a separate conversation about this with her and she claimed that it was nothing. After that talk, we hung out and talked for hours but after that day, we haven’t hung out outside of work. And I’d say

this day was about 2 weeks ago. A pattern began where we stopped hanging together outside of work and stopped calling to check on one another. I often felt like I was the only one putting an effort in to acknowledge our friendship and try to hang out and talk. This week is her birthday and we usually get expensive gifts for each other (concert tickets, designer clothes, last minute weekend getaways). I don’t know if I should get her anything like I normally would or should I just get her a card. What do you think?

E.K., AtlantaHey now EK, I’m so happy to hear

about the wonderful friendship you are able to experience, sustain and maintain for so many years. Your words unfold like it’s more than just a basic friendship and 10 years is a long time. Your email

describes a true-blue, sister-girl, BFF. Many of us participate in one of those. My niece, Leah, and her BFF, LaTia, for example. The most famous of all sister-girl friendships of course is Oprah and Gail. I, too, live it with my BFF Dee, we’re ride or die, to the end. It’s been more than 20 years for us.

This type of girlfriend, ride or die relationship will dance through the stages and ages of life. Surviving the misunders tandings , hear tbreaks , marriages, children, loss of a loved one, I could go on, but you get the picture. This is your first crash on the BFF roadway of life. Don’t let it rattle you, girl, check your seatbelt and keep it moving. TBT, there are many more to come. What matters is, you don’t let go. Hold on to the special bond the two of you share. As for her gift, buy her something fabulous, something she can

share. You know how sisters do, LOL. You’re participating is what wise, full of wisdom women call an unconditional sisterhood, a lifelong kinship ~ cherish it. It’s the best kind, she’s your sister not by birth but by choice.

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

Bailey HutchisonGrade: C

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

theadminis-

tration willadopt the productive,

responsible approach to ournation’s challenges thatAmericansdeserve.”(The office of John Cornyn of

PROPOSITIONS

1 AND 2

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

Leppert. But what doesvoting “no” and voting“yes” mean?It is important to

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.
