From the Pastor’s Desk…

To fully appreciate today’s Gospel, we need to understand what happened in the narrative before today’s reading. Jesus had just finished a serious rebuke of those who criticized John the Baptist for living the life of a hermit, and then in turn criticized Jesus for being too sociable, too available for dinner and good conversation. He also spoke of the towns which had benefitted from His ministry, but then rejected Him and His teaching. Obviously, Jesus is coming to terms with personal rejection.

In the face of these setbacks, Jesus still offers a prayer of thanks to God. This is indeed a difficult prayer to utter, perhaps the hardest of all prayers to speak. In his frustration and feelings of failure, Jesus still finds God and offers Him thanks. Jesus’ reliance and trust in His Father remains unshaken, recognizing that God’s ways are not always our ways.

Jesus wanted His disciples and us to learn from Him. His mission of proclaiming the Kingdom met opposition and rejection, yet in spite of these difficulties and the burden of perceived failure, He finds God. The self-important, the wise and clever, the self-satisfied and successful do not understand reliance upon God. They remain forever self-absorbed and fiercely convinced of their own security and self-reliance.

In the Gospel – these “little ones,” are those who labor hard and are overwhelmed, those on the outside and those life forgets – they are the humble who find their peace in God. They lack all else in life that is important to others, but they do have God. The yoke and burden of Jesus Christ is the sure trust and belief that in spite of all else – God is there. We are invited to understand such a simple formula for life. The faithful disciple has a view of life that the more complicated, more sophisticated can never understand.

Have a good week,Fr. Bill Arnold

Shared Parish Information

Happy Fourth of July 2020! The U.S. celebrates Independence Day! It is an opportunity for most Americans to kick back, celebrate, and perhaps relax with family and friends. Our country, with all its

flaws, is still the envy of the world. We enjoy freedoms and blessings far beyond our own merit. We offer the following prayer for our country as we prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July:

Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations.

For what we have achieved, we give You thanks; for the work that still remains, we ask Your help.

Grant that under Your providence our country may share Your blessings with all the people of the earth. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Produce Market: Our next Produce Market is from 3:00-5:00 p.m., this Friday, July 10th. Volunteers are needed about 1:00 p.m. to help set up. Our process will be a little different due to social distancing rules. We will conduct it as a

“drive through” so our clients will not need to leave their cars. We will pre-bag everything and load the bags into their trunks. Tables will be set up by the school. Food will be bagged as needed and placed on the tables, then collected in a larger bag for the clients. Please wear a mask. Gloves will be provided.

Playpen for Birthright. Each year beginning on Mother’s Day, through Father’s Day, a playpen for donations to Birthright is set up in the sanctuary of both St. Philip and Holy Spirit. This year, due to the pandemic and suspension of Mass, we began our collection last weekend, Father’s Day. Donations of baby items, such as diapers, baby wipes, onesies, etc., to assist moms who chose to give their child life, even under difficult circumstances. Donations can be brought to Mass, or dropped off at the Parish Office during office hours. Make a donation in memory of your own mother or father, if they are no longer with us.

Parishioners of St. Philip and Holy Spirit! We have opened up both parishes – St. Philip the Apostle and Holy Spirit Church – to those who wish to attend Mass. Attendance is voluntary. The Bishops of Ohio have extended the dispensation to attend Mass until September 13, 2020. Anyone at high risk or who shows any symptoms of illness, should remain at home.

Next Saturday, July 11, 4:00 p.m. at St. PhilipNext Sunday, July 12, 9:00 a.m. at St. Philip (call for a reservation: 614-237-1671)

Next Sunday, July 12, 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit (call for a reservation: 614-861-1521)

• You are asked to wear a mask. If you don’t have one, one will be provided.

• Sanitize your hands upon entering Church.

• You will be directed to a pew. Assigned seating.

• No moving around during Mass.

• Hymn books have been removed from the Church.

• No one will be admitted late.

• Mass to last no longer than 45 minutes.

• Envelopes may be placed in a basket as you exit.

• At end of Mass, an orderly dismissal.

• Use hand sanitizer when leaving Church.

• Please, no conversation/socializing in Church. I know this may seem difficult. Try it, we’ll get used to it.

Confessions at Holy Spirit: Every Thursday evening, Confessions are held at Holy Spirit Church from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Either Fr. Bill Arnold or Fr. Mike Nimocks will be hearing these confessions. Keep a few points in mind.

• Call to make an appointment. Give only your first name and a possible contact number.

• All confessions are in the Church. Only one person admitted to Church at a time – other doors remain locked.

• All Confessions are anonymous and done at a six-foot distance. Your anonymity is always protected. Fr. Arnold/Nimocks have no need or desire to know your identity. Priest sits behind a screen.

• All entry to Church through the bell tower door or elevator door.

“Living the Joy of the Gospel,” the theme of the 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal, inspires us, as people of faith, to share joyfully the Good News of Christ to those who most need to feel His love. Works of kindness and assistance, sometimes in the smallest way, can bring about a profound change in a person’s life. Through the BAA, we have an opportunity to bring about a positive change in the lives of many of God’s people. Through your generosity, you are supporting the various ministries and programs that are vital in spreading His love.

St. Philip Parish has been asked to raise $17,872.87.

Holy Spirit Parish has been asked to raise $51,080.33.

We can accomplish this if, after prayerful consideration, everyone gives what they can. Any amount raised over our goal will be returned to our parish to be used for our particular needs.

Daily Mass Slowly Opens Up: Mass is celebrated on Wednesday and Friday mornings in Holy Spirit Church (not the Day Chapel) at 9:00 a.m. There will also be a Mass celebrated every Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church. There are seldom more than 10-12 people at a daily Mass. We keep social distance, wear a mask, and use hand sanitizer. This is, for the summer, a good alternative to coming to a more crowded weekend Mass, if that is a concern to you.

A Thought on Racism:

“Every racist act – every such comment, every jab, every disparaging look as a reaction to the color of skin, ethnicity, or place of origin – is a failure to acknowledge another person as a brother or sister, created in the image of God.”

U.S. Catholic Bishops, “Open Wide Our Hearts” Pastoral Letter Against Racism

What does “taking up the Cross” mean today? Looking out for all our brothers and sisters, that is what it can mean. Working for the “common good” of every person in our community is another idea. We can do this by wearing a mask in public. I know it is inconvenient. I know it restricts my own freedom. It is our greatest defense of ourselves and others in this pandemic. We can do this!

Page 5: Holy Spirit St. Philip · 2020-07-04 · Holy Spirit & St. Philip Church Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 5, 2020 Saturday, July 4 – Vigil of the Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary

Knights of Columbus Food “Drive-Thru:” On Saturday, July 25, 2020, between the hours of 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., the members of the Marion Knights of Columbus Chapter 3864 will be at Holy Spirit (down by the Parish Office doors) to accept your contributions of grocery items for the food pantry. Please consider the purchase of some necessary items to help our neighbors in these difficult times. Thank you.

Holy Spirit Food Pantry: Visitors to the pantry have increased in the last several weeks. Your contributions and support are always welcome. If you wish to support our pantry, here are some of the items on the St. Vincent de Paul wish list:

• Breakfast cereal (14-16 oz.)• Peanut butter (16-20 oz.)• Spaghetti or other pasta (1 lb. box)• Spaghetti sauce (24 oz.)• Chef Boyardee pasta (14-16 oz.)

The parish office can receive dropped-off items from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., or the items can be left on the back porch of the rectory, social distance observed at all times. Your continued and sustained help is very much needed. Thank you for sharing – may God bless your generosity.

St. Philip Food Pantry is open on Wednesdays from 5:30-7:00 p.m. This is for drive-up only. Groceries are placed into the client’s car. If anyone is new to the pantry, please bring a photo ID, proof of current mailing address, and the names and complete birthdates of anyone living in the same dwelling. At this time, we are not able to accept clothing donations.

NO CATHOLICS OF LEFT OR RIGHTThe following is excerpted from a past article in America Magazine, the national Jesuit weekly magazine. I thought it appropriate to all Catholics to again consider this:

“In the United States, toxic partisanship increasingly colors not only our choices at the ballot box but where we shop, what news we read and even how we see the state of the economy. Pope Francis [recently] reminded Catholics that such political loyalties have no place in the Catholic Church. “When Christians take sides and form parties,” the pope said, “[we] become Christians of the ‘right’ or the ‘left,’ before being on the side of Jesus.”

“…This is not because Catholics must be apolitical or centrists or should retreat from the public square. But the Church… is not a polis (a political state) but a communion. And in this communion, we are not Democrats or Republicans, liberals or conservatives, citizens or foreigners. We are rather disciples of the one who is truth, the one for whom justice and love are the only standards of human action.”

Please remember in your prayers all the sick, homebound and/or recovering from St. Philip and Holy Spirit Parishes, especially Scott Belton, Ned Braun, Robert & Lu Cudak, Judy Fitzgerald, Christine Krites, MaryLou Pelzer, Lisa Rundag, and Elaine Trouten, and for those in our parishes coping with physical and mental conditions.

Mass on Facebook, Sunday at 11:00 a.m.: Go to facebook.com/holyspirit43213, all lowercase letters. If you don’t have a Facebook account, you will be asked to create one. However, you are not obligated to post or share any personal information.

Join the 2020 Census Team! The Census Bureau is still recruiting to fill important positions as Census takers. In addition to supporting your own community, census jobs offer great pay every week, flexible hours, and paid training. Visit www.2020census.gov/jobs, or call 1-855-JOB-2020, to learn more about specific application requirements.

Attention Catholic young men entering 9th-12th grade. Do you know where your life is going? The Lord Jesus has a great plan for you! You are invited to attend the Quo Vadis Retreat, spending time with other young men discerning God’s call. Quo Vadis is led by priests and seminarians of the Diocese of Columbus and is supported by the

Diocesan Office of Vocations. Quo Vadis will be held July 26th-July 29th. The cost of the retreat is $40.00. For more information or to register, contact Michael Haemmerle at [email protected], or go to https://faceforwardcolumbus.com/quo-vadis/.
