Zechariah g:g-:,o lRomans 8:9, u-l-3 / Matthew 11:25-30

One day when my children were youn9, we went on a walk around theneighborhood. We encountered two girls who were about five and six years old.

The elder child had her arm around the younger and was saying convincingly,

"l'll tell you how it goes. l'll tell you what to do, and you do it." The five-year-old,

alleyes, nodded atthe wisdom of these words. lsmiled as lthought, "lt would

be nice if the world were so simple.';

Our readings today present the deceivingly simple solution to demands and

temptations. lt's as though God is saying, "l will tell you how it goes."

ln the face of war and devastation, Zechariah shows us the God of peace, who

rides a donkey but whose justice lasts forever.

ln the face of hunger, anger, and oppression, the psalmist prays to God, who

is slow to anger and abounds in mercy, who raises up the fallen and satisfies the

desire of every living thing, and whose reign lasts forever.

ln the face of death of body and spirit, Paul talks about the life that can be

ours if we but open ourselves to the Spirit of God.

And Jesus-seeing that we are burdened by temptations, the expectations ofothers, and the laws that oppress rather than help us live-invites us to become

like children, to take off the heavy yoke that binds and put on the yoke of Christ,

a yoke that gives life.

ls he telling us what to do? Yes.

All that's left is for us to do it.Mary Katharine Deeley [email protected]

July rzth following the Saturday 4:oo p.m. Mass. Please join your parish in

celebrating the Holy Martyrs of Chiha. The blood of the martyrs is the seed ofthe Church. (Tertullian). We are grateful for their love for God and his people.

One of the more well-known native maftyrs was a 14-year-old Chinese girl

named Ann Wang, who was killed during the Boxer Rebellion when she

refused to apostasize. She bravely withstood the threats of her totturers, and just as she was about to be beheaded, she radiantly declared, "The door

of heaven is open to all" and repeated the name of Jesus three times.cath o li cn ews ag e n cY. co m

Dear Dillon,

Dillcn

fuk your aunt what these revelations are about. Is the Blessed

Mother telling her to go to Mass every week, to be good tothe poor, to say her prayers? If she is, I wouldn't be tooconcerned.

If however, your aunt says the Blessed Mother is telling herto sell her house or quit her job, or if she feels compelled toshare these revelations with otherso I would be moreconcerned.

The Catdrisn of the Catholic Churdr is very clear on

appmitions: "Throughout the ages, some [private revelations]have been recognized by the authority of the Church-...Guided by the magisterium..., the sur$sfiddiumknows howto discern and welcome in these revelations whatever

constitutes an authentic call of Christ or his saints to theChurch" (67).

Your aunt's sncounters with Mmy might be her imagination,or they might be something more. Your aunt should ask herpastor to recommend a spiritual director, someone she can

talk this over with and who can help her discern what willbring her closer to Jesus.
