CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish July 7, 2013 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, As you read this letter, I will most likely have arrived at my vacation destination on the other side of the globe. If you are reading this on Saturday evening, I am still in flight over the Pacific Ocean, headed for the Philippines. I am traveling with some very good friends of mine to their homeland to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their marriage. The rest of the time will be devoted to rest and relaxation, as well as some adventure in tropical locales. If you don’t recognize me due to my bronze appearance upon my return, you’ll know I’ve been soaking up some sun. As I was packing for a three week trip, I was trying to focus on the essential items that I would need while overseas. It is always a temptation to take too much. What I want to take and what I actually need are two different things. Being that I will move around quite a bit, I’ve tried to focus on minimalism. It is never pleasant to be encumbered by lugging too much stuff around. The times that I’ve had greatest enjoyment are the times where I have had less to worry about. Isn’t that always the case? As a kid, one of the great lessons I learned was that there was greater enjoyment in the simple things of life. I’m grateful that I didn’t grow up in the era of computers, iPads, or other gadgets. We had other things to grab our attention, but the most memorable experiences of my childhood were the times that I left those things behind and spent outdoors camping. As kids, we could find all kinds of things to entertain us. A good flowing river to swim in, campfires to light, or hills to climb were far more fun than all the other things that occupied our attention back home. If you were to look back at some of your best times, when would they be? It is doubtful that your best experiences in life revolved around things. Most likely, they revolved around friends and other people. When we let go and rely upon the unconventional, wonderful things happen. When sending out the seventy-two disciples, Jesus sends them out in such a way that they must become fully reliant upon the providential care of God. They were sent without money bag, sack, or sandals. In other words, they were to go out unencumbered, so as to proclaim the good news. In such a way, they would give witness to the fact that their work was not motivated by personal gain or monetary advantage. Rather, their reliance upon God would give witness to a true and authentic faith. Jesus wanted them to rely upon him in order to show that they had real faith. God would always provide. God would take care of them and they would never be in need. Detachment demonstrates the urgency of God’s message. When unencumbered, the gospel message takes off without delay like lightening flashing across the sky. Our detachment creates a conduit whereby God’s grace flows freely and directly to others. This kind of detachment – with no strings attached – brings freedom and a much greater sense of peace to the giver. The message is much more believable and real because there is no personal gain that is attached to it. The Gospel is freely given and the giver is also enriched because

of the amazing work that God does through the giver. This highlights the other point about detachment. God’s grace more freely flows through such a person because of his or her humility.

One of the things that the Gospel highlights is how awestruck the disciples were at how demons fled as a result of their ministry. Certainly, in our day and time, there are adversarial forces at work in our world that want to keep God out of the public domain. How can we counteract such forces? How can we be victorious over an increasingly secularized world in which God is kept out of the public square? It is through our serious reliance upon God in faith that people will have a change of heart. If we become less attached to personal comfort and rely more heavily upon God’s providential care, the Gospel will more readily and speedily fly into the hearts and minds of the people who remain open to His grace. Jesus sends us out into the world to do good. Let us lighten our burden and become more reliant upon God each day.

God bless,

Welcome new Parishioners! Please welcome our new

parishioners, Colleen Habeeb and son, Silas, and Kyle M. Trepagnier. We invite them to become an active part of our growing faith community!

From the Parish Mailbox…..On behalf of our entire DeGregorio

family, I want to express our deepest gratitude for the love and support over the loss of our son, Patrick. The support shown us by you caring parishioners here at St. Pius X is what is making this difficult time a bit more bearable.

The eulogies given by Father Paul and Monsignor Shirley were so heartwarming. They described Patrick perfectly as many of you who knew him can attest to. We also want to thank Father Joseph, our seminarian James Hernandez, Michael Conley and the Woman’s Schola Choir, Lisa Catchings, and members of Patrick’s beloved St. Pius X Men’s Club and all you wonderful, caring parishioners from the bottom of our hearts.

Pat & Sandy DeGregorio and Family

Please join us for this wonderful movie on Friday, July 12th, at 7pm in the Youth Center. Popcorn and drinks will be provided.

Pop a Top for a Good CauseSeveral members of the Acts of Charity

Committee have been saving their pull-tabs for a while now and turning into the Ronald McDonald House so that they can redeem and use the monies for their needs. So many of us just throw these away, so we are asking you to save the pull tabs off of your soda, beer and all other cans with pull-tabs. You can drop them in the designated box in the back of the church and we will collect each week and periodically take to the Ronald McDonald House. Thanks for your support!

Feeling a little empty?

Spend time with Jesus!Do you feel as though you are running out of steam? Do

you feel distant from God? Do you enjoy your relationship with God? We would like to invite you to an hour of prayer in the church every Thursday evening from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. Come spend some time in the presence of the Lord in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. You’re guaranteed to feel rejuvenated and more peaceful after passing time in the presence of Our Savior!

St. Kateri Tekakwitha The Year of Faith saint for

July is St. Kateri Tekakwitha, one of the newest American saints. A smallpox epidemic in her Native American village left Kateri orphaned, disfigured, and half-blind at the age of four. Introduced to Catholicism by visiting priests, she was baptized at the age of 19 against the strenuous objections of her relatives. Eventually, the persecution against her became so strong that she had to steal away to a Christian village

work of MOM—Mission of Mercy. Take a tour of the mobile unit outfitted to serve the medical needs of the people in this area. Mornings at 9:15am (or later at 12:15pm) are available for tours at First United Methodist Church downtown on Shoreline. Meet in their parlor on Mondays; July 15th and 29th for coffee and visiting. You’ll be glad you did!!

Other Than Attend Mass, What Else Must I Do? We are also called to perform works of mercy. “The works of

mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2447).

There are seven spiritual works of mercy: to admonish the sinner, to instruct the ignorant, to counsel the doubtful, to comfort the sorrowful, to bear wrongs patiently, to forgive all injuries, to pray for the living and the dead. There are also seven corporal works of mercy. They are: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit those in prison, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, bury the dead.

How important is it for us to perform these acts? Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me” (Mt 25:35-36). That makes it very important.

The Vatican Says Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII Are to Become Saints

Pope Francis cleared John Paul II for sainthood on Friday, approving miracles attributed to the late pontiff.

Pope John Paul II’s first approved miracle was the healing of a French nun, Sister Marie Simon-Pierre. Her recovery from Parkinson’s disease after praying for the late pontiff’s intersession offered no medical explanation, according to the Vatican. The healing was confirmed as a miracle just six months after the pope’s death in 2005.

The second miracle is said to have occurred on May 1, 2011 – the night of John Paul’s beatification ceremony in St. Peter’s Square – and was the healing of a Costa Rican woman.

French nun Marie Simon-Pierre (right) attends a solemn ceremony at San Giovanni Basilica in Rome on April 2, 2007. A Vatican commission says she was miraculously cured of Parkinson’s disease through the intercession of John Paul II.

On Tuesday, Italian news agency ANSA reported that a Vatican congregation of cardinals and bishops had credited John Paul with the second miracle.

Seventy-eight former popes have been canonized, the last being Pope Pius X, who served as head of the Roman Catholic Church from 1903 to 1914. He was canonized in 1954.

The Vatican said Pope John XXIII, who was pontiff from 1958 to 1963 and called the Second Vatican Council, would also be made a saint.

The cardinals and archbishops who are members of the saints’ congregation met at the Vatican July 2 and voted in favor to ask Pope Francis to canonize him without requiring a miracle. According to church rules -- established by the pope and subject to changes by him -- a miracle is needed after beatification to make a candidate eligible for canonization.

No dates for the canonization ceremonies were immediately given.

In First Encyclical, Pope Celebrates Faith as the Light of Human Life

Pope Francis’ first encyclical, “Lumen Fidei” (“The Light of Faith”), is a celebration of Christian faith as the guiding light of a “successful and fruitful life,” inspiring social action as well as devotion to God, and illuminating “every aspect of human existence,” including philosophy and the natural sciences.

The document, released July 5, completes a papal trilogy on the three “theological virtues,” following Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclicals “Deus Caritas Est” (2005) on charity and “Spe Salvi” (2007) on hope. Publication of the encyclical was one of the most awaited events of the Year of Faith which began in October 2012.

Pope Benedict “had almost completed a first draft of an encyclical on faith” before his retirement in February 2013, Pope Francis writes, adding that “I have taken up his fine work and added a few contributions of my own.”
